Sign rules
 Adding Sign rules

            Positive + Positive = Positive
            eg: 5 + 4 = 9
            Negative + Negative = Negative
            eg: (- 7) + (- 2) = - 9

Sum of a negative and a positive number:
Use the sign of the larger number and
            subtract
                                       eg: (- 7) + 4 = -3
                                          6 + (-9) = - 3
                                          (- 3) + 7 = 4
                                           5 + ( -3) = 2
 Subtracting Rules:

 Negative - Positive = Negative
 eg: (- 5) - 3 = -5 + (-3) = -8
 Positive - Negative = Positive + Positive =
 Positive
 eg: 5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8
 Negative - Negative = Negative + Positive = Use
the sign of the larger number and
subtract (Change double negatives to a
 positive)
                          eg:(-5) - (-3) = ( -5) + 3 = -2
                             (-3) - ( -5) = (-3) + 5 = 2
Integers Numbers

Positive Numbers

    • +1, +2, +3,+4. every number which is
greater than 1 is called positive
      numbers.
Negative Number

• -1, -2, -3, -4 every number which
is less than 1 is called negative
  numbers
Writing integers
Example Written as Read as

1) (+55) + (-30) 55+ (-30) Fifty –five plus
                                   negative thirty
2) (+49) + (+14) 49+(14) Forty-nine plus
                   Or 49+14 fourteen
3)(-27) + (-127) (-27) +(-127) Negative
                                   twenty-seven
                                   plus negative
                                   hundred and
                                   twenty-seven
Multiplication and division of
             integers
• Ex. (1) (-14) X (-5)
The magnitudes of -14 and -5 are 14 and 5
   respectively
Their product, 14X5 = 70
(-14) X(-5)=70
The product of two negative numbers is
   positive.
Carry out the following
       multiplications:
• 12X(-3)
• (-6) X4
• (-15)X(-5)
• 35X8
• (-38)X(-2)
• 15X(-61)
Carry out the following Divisions:
    • (-15) / (-5)
    • (-38/ (-2)
    • 90/6
    • (-90)/(-6)
