3. Existing ProductThis magazine is a gaming themed magazine that seems to be targeted at
gamers of all ages due to the front cover art being that of Pokémon, a game that
is appropriate for all ages. The magazine mainly consists of articles, adverts and
various artwork connected to the gaming community, with only a few photos
depicted as advertisement for products such as the PS4. The images and
artwork in question are mainly seen as features of the full length interviews and
articles that take up the majority of the magazine, which could suggest the
magazine may be targeted at slightly older audiences due to the copious
amount of reading within. The color scheme doesn’t seem to be very defined in
the magazine due to the various pictures throughout, however I can guess that
the main color scheme may consist of white, purple and red as this was the
color of the text and table of content at the start of the magazine and on the
Game Awards page, which could be seen as similar and dark colors, intended to
relax the reader and create a peaceful reading atmosphere. The photography in
this magazine seems to only be used for select adverts, with most of the images
throughout consisting of screenshots of game art and various artwork, the
majority of which connected to Pokémon. The writing style of the magazine
seems to mainly be in a formal and factual manner in order to get across the
information presented about the varying topics throughout the magazine, most
of this information being presented in the form of articles and interview quotes.
The text/picture ratio seems to be equal due to most of the pictures seen in the
magazine being displayed alongside said articles and interviews and other
features such as a large bock of text being placed alongside one large image or
multiple smaller images. The font choices seem to vary as the title texts are
more decorative and eye-catching whilst the larger main bodies of text have a
plain font in order for the reader to concentrate more on the information
written rather than any flashy, distracting fonts. The mode of address
throughout the magazine seems to be formal and indirect so to better convey
the information given throughout the articles, rather than turn the magazine
into more of a gossip article or make the information somehow personal to the
reader. The magazines written codes consists of various quotes related to some
of the articles not in the article, but instead placed around the article and made
to be larger and bolder and therefore be more eye-catching, these types of
quotes are used to draw the reading into specific parts of the article. However,
some of the more symbolic codes could be the almost dramatic looking artwork
on the front cover, which deviates from the games original, signifying how
important this game is in this particular magazine and the artwork further on in
the magazine made in tribute to 20 years of Pokémon made to look like
Pikachu, again symbolizing the importance of this game. This magazine makes
the audience want to read it due to the colorful photography, artwork and
images throughout and the useful information within the article which can help
the reader learn more about their favorite games

This magazine seem to be mainly made up of studio photography, with
the majority being of well known actresses or social influencers and
articles/interviews with the people in question due to the theme of
this magazine being some form of gossip, but with serious topics or
overtones. This magazines color scheme seems to be muted in order
to give off a sophisticated look to the reader despite the gossip topics
shown throughout. The photography seen in this magazine seems to
mostly be studio, professional photos of celebrities, in order to convey
the importance of the magazine and also the contents within, as the
interviews seem to be connected to many celebrities, such as the ones
displayed on their front cover. The writing style and language of the
articles in the magazine seems to be quite formal, displaying the
seriousness of the topic of conversation, rather than taking it in an
informal direction. Additionally, due to the format of the writing being
that of an interview, the mode of address will be indirect but the
formality will vary in each actresses interview due to the varying
degrees of language knowledge and/or speaking ability. The
text/picture ratio in this magazine seems to lean more in the text
direction, possibly because of just a few pictures of celebrities being
needed in order to attract and appeal to the audience, with the
interviews and articles making up the majority of the magazine in
order to deliver on the topics displayed on the cover. The fonts used
throughout this magazine may vary but still seem to follow the muted
theme of the overall magazine design, with most of the text being a
very simple font, seeming to only vary in size in order to show the
importance of each topic or what will take up the majority of the
magazine. Pull quotes seem to have been placed on this cover in order
to entice the audience or grab their attention, big names could also be
a part of this. Inspirational words such as "Fly High" used to encourage
readers due to the positive messages within and quite informal
language when talking about less interesting topics to draw attention
to celebrity. However, bold words such as "Body Politics" used to
emphasize importance of topic, mainly black and white colors used to
give a fairly neutral appearance so as not to accommodate to one
particular audience type and picture of celebrity taking up the entire
cover will significantly interest the audience. Overall, this magazine
appeals to its chosen audience as the actors featured in the magazine
are all women and the majority of the readers are women, thereby

This magazine seems to consist of various shots of celebrities, which
seem to mix between studio shots and candid shots, such as the image
in the top right, and various articles with adverts inbetween,
presenting a casual and almost informal atmosphere. The color
scheme of this magazine seems to be mainly bright and attention
grabbing, rather than sutle in order to peak the readers interest, such
as the colors used in the logo/magazine title, these house colours have
also been used throughout the magazine. The photography used in
this magazine is mainly candid pictures rather than proper, studio
images, again suggesting an informal atmosphere, appealing to the
majority of readers going about their every day lives. The writing style
and language of this magazine seems to again be quite informal but
still seems to retain facts rather than voicing their own opinion, giving
a reliable source of content their audience can enjoy. Addtionally, the
mode of address this magazine seems to convey seems quite informal
but also a bit direct as it seems to use words like "we" rather than
"you", encapsulating the audience and magazine as a whole, giving a
more friendly and relatable feel in terms of the reader. The
text/picture ratio of this magazine seems to be equal in terms of how
these elements are both placed, such as multple images placed
alongside multiple pieces of text, in order to give context for both
elements and explain the point the magazine was trying to covey,
without overusing too much of one paticuler element. The fonts used
in this magazine are mainly large, bold and simple, mainly in order to
get to the point or display just how important a certain issue is, some
fancier fonts have been used in the subtitles, possiby to link to the
celbrities shown underneath or to invigorate the audiences attention.
Use of pull quotes has been used on the cover in order to appeal to
the audience, the vocabulary used such as "exclusive" and references
to the royal family are used to entice the reader as it seems this
magazine contains information that they won't be able to find
anywhere else. Pictures of people part of the royal family have most
likely been used here due to their high social status, making the
magazine appear more grander or important, the appearance of many
women on the front cover may also symbolise which gender the
magazine is mainly targeted at. This magazine successfully appeals to
its target audience due to the vast appearence of celebrities, their
attitude to events that may peak the interest of older audiences and
how many of the articles featured in the magazine altogether may
8. Research Analysis
• Overall, the features that all the magazines seem to share are a clear balance between
the use of text and photographs, rather than favouring one over the other and risk
loosing the audience due to too much text or an overuse of pictures, their titles and
covers seem relatively significant in terms of audiences opinions, as they feature an
image of something that the majority of society would easily recognise, such as a
celebrity or a brand name. The magazines also discuss topics that are relevant for their
audience, rather that events that are no longer significant, such as something that
happened a year ago. Another feature could be how on all three of the covers, there is
one main image displaying the main topic or issue that the magazine addresses.
• When I begin the production process of my magazine, I will make sure to make my
magazine title visible to the reader, due to how magazines are arranged in a regular
shop or newsagents, I may have my main topic or issue as the front cover image, in
order to convey its significance in this particular magazines or have a "celebrity" (studio
photograph) on the cover, in order to convey the magazines overall importance or to
entice the select audience into reading. Finally, I've decided to add various topic areas
connected to my chosen magazine topic on the front cover as well, in the form of
quotes and statements, so to show the reader that there is more to the magazine than
the main story (my double page spread) and so that there may be a side topic area that
interests the select reader.
