The document discusses how the magazine attracts and addresses its target audience of girls aged 16-19 who are interested in rock music. The main image on the cover features two models of the target age/gender to create relatability. Throughout the magazine, bold fonts, vivid colors, images of rock icons, and informal language are used to appeal to the youthful audience. Pull quotes and previews of band interviews draw readers into articles and keep their attention. The consistent branding and preview of diverse content aims to convince readers that the magazine is worth purchasing.
2. Main Image
The main image is of two girls who are the same age and
gender as my target audience (of girls aged 16-19), therefore
this alone attracts the target audience and allows them to
relate to the models and creates a good relationship between
the target audience and the magazine. The medium shot of the
models denotes their hand gestures which are quite energetic,
conveying the energy needed to attract the target audience of
a rock genre magazine and also capture the audience's
attention immediately, drawing them into the magazine. The
hand gestures also attract the audience as these are typically
associated with rock music. The mis-en-scene used in the main
image such as the dark lipstick not only appeals to the target
audience as they will associate this with the rock scene, but the
lipstick also adds colour to the front cover which catches the
audience's attention. The models are showing direct address
the main target audience, again creating an intimate
relationship between the audience and the magazine. As well
as this, the main image is one of the first things the audience
will see on the front cover and so the direct address is another
way of holding their attention and keeping them interested in
the magazine in general.
3. Masthead
The masthead is also one of the first
things the target audience will see on the
front cover. It is large and in bold eroded
and white font so that it immediately
stands out to the target audience on the
page as soon as they look at the magazine
cover. The eroded font connotes the rock
genre as the font looks as if it has been
worn away from the loud music, as rock is
known for being loud and crazy.
Therefore, the font on the masthead at
the top of the page attracts and appeals
to the target audience.
4. Main Cover Line
The main cover line is in a big, bold white eroded typeface, the same
typeface as the masthead to add consistency to the page and give
my magazine a house style which in turn gives it branding and makes
it recognisable and appealing to the target audience on a shop shelf.
The main cover line is the main story and feature in this issue of my
magazine, therefore it is the largest cover line seen on the front page
so that it stands out from the crowd and the audience automatically
see this cover line at a first glance and are drawn in to reading the
magazine. They will know that the main cover line is anchored to the
main image, which again will draw them into reading inside and
keeps their attention.
5. Other Cover Lines
The other cover lines connote that this is a rock genre magazine by
including popular and recognisable band names that the target audience
would expect to see in a magazine and be interested in reading about, as
concluded from task 7, audience research, and so these cover lines attract
their attention further. Furthermore, the cover lines are highlighted in
bright colours to stand out from the page and make them easily legible by
the target audience and they also show that this magazine has a lot of
content to offer, which appeals to the target audience by making them
think the magazine is worth the price, as they do not have much
disposable income (being college students of working and middle class
with only some having a part time paying job.), so they like the fact there
are a lot of features and new inside to read and they are not wasting their
money.
6. Colour Scheme
The colour scheme is red white and grey with some yellow, which
is bright and eye catching, in order to make the features in yellow
more noticeable on the page and attract the audience. The red is
a bold colour which also captures the audience's eye but also
has connotations of danger, which will attracts the target
audience further as the audience for rock music
stereotypically like to live loud and crazy lives and like to be
involved in risks. This red is complementary of the more subtle
grey seen in the colour scheme, however this adds a metallic
element which is symbolic to the audience of electric guitars,
microphones drum kits, and typical rock music icons that would
conventionally be denoted in a rock magazine. So all of the
colours in the colour scheme are appealing to my target audience
and attract their attention. The main colours are seen throughout
the contents of my magazine, for example on the contents page
and double page spread too, adding consistency to the magazine
and keeping the audience interested.
7. Editorial Letter
The editorial letter is placed on the contents page. The
purpose of this letter is to convey the genre of the
magazine across to the audience, by telling them a little bit
about what can be found in the contents and giving some
information about this issue. The mode of address to the
audience in the letter is colloquial, meaning it has slang and
is very informal, making it more appealing to the youthful
and working class audience who are stereotypically
associated with this form of language and
therefore reinforcing an intimate relationship between the
magazine and the target audience. This mode of address is
also consistent throughout the magazine in order to make
the make the audience feel absolutely comfortable while
reading and keeping their attention so that they don't get
bored by formal address.
8. Double Page Spread Headline
The headline is what the audience immediately see
when they first look at the double page spread. It is
large in size and is denoted in the same kind of font as
the masthead, which keeps the house style and
branding of the magazine, but is also in a vivid colour to
catch the audience's eye and attract them into reading
the article. I made the headline short and catchy and
easy to understand by just showing the band name, so
this also attracts the audience as this name will be
familiar to them and they will want to read more about
the band and their interview.
9. Images
Images are placed all throughout my finished
magazine, on the front cover, contents page and
double page spread. On each of these pages,
there is a main image or several other little
images. These images give the audience
something more and interesting to view. They
make the pages seem more colourful and
energetic and capture the audience's eye. Not
only this but they tell the stories of the articles
more, so that the audience gets more of an idea
of the setting, or purpose of the article.
Therefore, images attract the audience by
setting the scene of the magazine, by showing
props and people which convey the rock genre.
10. Pull Quotes
Pull quotes are placed on the contents and the
double page spread. These attract the audience into
wanting to read the full article by giving little pieces
of information to them, that they would like to find
more about. They tell a little bit of the story of the
article and so they set the scene of the contents
that appear in the magazine. Pull quotes add
mystery and excitement to the page, which draws
the audience in and they are denoted in colours
that stand out on the page, for example red, so easy
to immediately see and read by the target audience,
so that they want to read the magazine straight
away.
