1. Magazine Evaluation
In this evaluation I will be analysing all aspects of my cover page, contents
and double page spread to show my understanding and what I learnt when
analysing other magazines such as XXL, Kerrang and Vibe.
2. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products
3. Masthead (front cover):
The masthead of the title of my magazine is the bold
accent to the cover. It is placed on the left hand side in the
top corner of the cover, this is so if it was on the shelves at
a store it would be easily seen and recognisable.
The use of large font and the colour of pink allows this
masthead to stand out even more. The main image (a
women) inspires the colour scheme and house style for the
rest of the cover due to my all girl theme. My font is the
not standard font but it is easily read and would stand out,
not only to people who read the magazine, but the general
public due to its simple professional look.
4. The headline is usually the 2nd boldest piece of text on a
front cover behind the masthead/title. This is because they
want the main headline to stand out amongst the other
sell-lines and features, showing it is the most important
however I chose to keep all my cover lines and headline all
the same size to show equal importance and consistency
5. image:
Along with the masthead, the main or cover image is the thing that stands
out the most on the cover my magazine. My cover star is artist (Melissa hunt)
without enhancements but it has some editing to alter to contrast of colour
for effect. My cover star is a pretty female which helps the magazine appeal
to my target audiences of females and people in general. I used of direct
mode of address with my artist looking directly at the camera makes the
magazine appeal even more as if her eyes are telling you a story. This image
stands out due to angle it is taken and the shot used (mid shot/close-up).
The artist is wearing make which portrays her loud character. The use of
intertextuality gives the front page some diversity; After looking at other
film magazine covers containing a medium close up shot, I have come to the
conclusion that the background is fairly plain, fitting in with the colour
scheme and allowing the main image to stand out even more. I dressed my
artist in high street fashion(affordable clothing) to appeal to my target
audience (abc1) also to allow my target audience to be able relate to the
artist.
6. On the front cover, the feature headlines share the similar
colour scheme as the masthead and headline while still
letting them stand out. However on my cover page the
number 50 featured in one of the feature headlines stands
out more than the rest of the writing to grab the reader’s
attention allowing them to read on as it is the very first
feature that catches your eye
7. and Barcode:
The date is a very important convention for a magazine and
is always essential due to the obvious fact that it allows
you to know which monthly issue the magazine is.
Like the date, the barcode is also an essential convention
for a magazine for technical reasons
8. My contents page has features throughout giving it a visual feel,
this is also to draw in my younger audience who usually associate
names with faces, also creating awareness of new artist for those
who don’t know particular artists , they are able to look them up
when instructed to by the contents. E.g. "read more on page 6”
This contents page is similar to the others, in that it uses a large
contrasting title to illustrate which page it is. However, it lacks
the logo of the magazine, possibly showing it is a very well known
and prestigious magazine. The capital lettered font could be
inferred that the magazine wishes to have a slightly edgy look,
possibly trying to appeal to younger audiences. Also the type of
content that is listed in my contents page is very different to
other contents pages due to its unique choose of articles and
activities listed within the magazine giving it diversity and is able
to cater to many different types of tastes.
9. page spread
My double page spread is very different from many others due to its
minimalistic , fashionable style that would instantly attract those who
have a taste for design. The masthead is bold and eye-catching letting
the consumer know instantly what the article will be about, it also has
an interesting/bold subheading that will draw the audience in to read on
“the real” giving the audience a sense of trust that the article will be
100% truthful with its content. I have also used studio photos to give the
audience a incite on what we got up to at the NUI NUI studios giving
them a sense of belonging and membership as the pictures are exclusive
and can only be seen by those who posses the magazine or subscribe to
the online version.
Lastly the written aspect of my Dps is very laid back and informal
appealing to my target audience it also makes references that only the
younger generation or readers would be able to understand adding to
this sense of unity that my magazine is aiming to portray giving the
audience something to relate to that they may not be able to access
when reading other magazines
