Production Process Evaluation
Research
First I researched production techniques, focussing on the techniques I knew I would be using for my video. I
listed them and explained what they were and discussed how, where, and why I would be using them. I also
provided some video examples I found online for my filming technique. Completing this section in this way
allowed me to fully understand the techniques I looked at, allowing this research to be beneficial towards my
final piece. Next I researched existing products. I looked at music videos filmed with a POV shot as this was the
shot type I was planning to use for my own music video allowing me to get the most of this section. I went into
detail, for each video, and pin pointed the key aspects of the production including both filming and editing
techniques. I then went on to explain the effect of those techniques and if I would consider using them for my
video. This allowed me to see a wide range of techniques used in POV videos that I may be able to include
which was very beneficial as I had never worked with POV filming before. I then looked at singles album covers.
I analysed them in detail discussing what layout and colouring techniques have been used and their effects on
the covers has a whole. This allowed me to start thinking about possible layouts I could use for my own cover
and see the most common and effective techniques used in this sector that I could potentially use. I completed
a short research analysis to summarise the key parts of my findings and then stated the parts I would be
potentially using. This meant I could find my main points a lot easier.
I conducted some primary research by creating a questionnaire and asked a series of questions about different
aspects of my video. I then analysed the answers I received focusing on the most common responses for each
question. These results helped me decide certain things to include in the video, such as activities and food,
along with the feelings I need to try and get across.
Overall my research was effective and helped me learn more about the techniques I was planning on using,
made me aware of techniques I hadn't come across before and helped me to decide certain aspects of my
video. It also allowed me to have a stronger starting point to planning the project. However I believe there are
some areas where I could make some improvements. When looking at music videos I could have looked at
some non POV style videos and looked at some in the same genre as my chosen song to see some techniques
and conventions. I could have also included a section solely on genre research going into more detail on the
conventions of my chosen songs genre. For the questionnaire I should have shared it around more to get a
greater amount of responses to make my results more beneficial to the final piece.
Planning
The main parts of my planning were the album cover design ideas, storyboard, storyboard examples, and
structural breakdown. For the album cover designs I created two brief designs including both front and back of
the cover, using general shapes to mark out where things will go along with labels stating what each thing is.
These designs gave me rough ideas of how I wanted my cover to look and were useful to refer back to when it
came to making it. I then created four pages of a storyboard. I sketched out all of the key frames from my video
and wrote a short description explaining what it is along with some details about the type of shot for example,
a timelapse. This allowed me to visualise how the video would look and was also good to refer back to while
filming and editing my footage. To add to the storyboard, I did a couple image examples of some of the key
frames I sketched on the storyboard. This allowed me to visualise even further how the video would look and
helped to show the storyboard and my ideas better.
My planning played a huge part in my project as it allowed me fully think about every aspect of production. I
was able to go into great detail for some sections which created a clearer path forwards for the filming of the
video.
To improve I could have added more movement lines to the sketches on the storyboard along with some
description of what they mean. I also could have been a bit more specific on my structural breakdown as some
of my descriptions were quite broad.
Time Management
I manged to complete everything that I wanted to create for this project on time. I made a timetable, giving
myself a certain number of hours for each part of the production, aiming for these targets would help to keep
me on track however I did run into some issues and only just managed to finish. The footage I collected on my
first day of filming didn't look how I wanted it to meaning I was set back from the start. I went out filming a few
more days and the clips still weren't how I planned. This meant I had less time on my editing than originally
planned as I had spent lots of time re-filming and re-editing sections. I decided to work overtime and do extra
hours at home to make sure I could get it finished and still have time for my CD cover. Working on the video at
home allowed me more time to finish off everything else, I was able to improve earlier parts of my project,
complete my CD cover and finish all my production on time.
Issues that Occurred
Emotional:
Due to my timing issues, talked about in my time management section, I started to become stressed about not
finishing on time and the fact the project wasn't looking how I had planned added to this stress. I then started
to have issues with concentration and motivation meaning a lot of time was wasted on just doing nothing. To
overcome this I decided to create my final pieces at home, giving me way more time to complete everything.
This also meant I could work on improvements and on going evaluation in class making me more productive.
As my footage didn't turn out how I had planned, and going back out and filming more wasn't an option due
to bad weather, I knew I needed to just work with the footage I had and change my ideas slightly to make it all
fit. Once I started to get a few sections of my video together I got my motivation, to complete it, back and
worked hard through the extra hours at home to get it all done.
Technical:
One thing I wanted to do during this project was test out and use more transitions. I tried to create the
transitions I did during my experiments however when it came to editing, the separate clips didn't match up
correctly. I tried to adjust the angle, speed, and size of the videos to try and make the transitions work but
unfortunately they didn't so I ended up just going with a standard cut. Along with this some of my footage
didn't come out clearly or just didn't look right with the rest of the video. Most of my unusable footage was
supposed to be used at the start of the video so I had to change my idea. I ended up moving the car journey
scene closer to the start and also created a new transition for the very beginning. When editing I also tried to
make all the footage look more similar by editing the colours and brightness etc, but I found this to be quite
difficult and ended up making each clip seem more out of place so I decided to go for a more vintage style and
used a filter to make it seem like you're looking back on older footage. This helped make all the footage look
like one piece.
Technical Qualities - Camera
The majority of my footage was clear and of high quality. There were a couple of clips that were
out of focus however I only used the good quality footage for my final piece. The lighting in each
clip was different however I fixed that a bit later with an effect filter. I kept my shot type
consistent throughout all of the footage using a first person perspective like originally planned.
The first person perspective makes the viewer feel like they are playing the part in the video so
changing the shot type would make this effect less effective. The footage was also smooth in
terms of movement, although it is the movements of a person walking, looking around etc,
those movements were done smoothly to make sure it is easy on the eye.
Technical Qualities - Editing
Music Video:
There are no gaps between any of the clips meaning they all connect perfectly. The cuts are done to the beat
making the footage fully connect with the song. I also added a few short fade transitions to remove the
suddeness of some of the cuts between the clips such as where it cuts from a fast moving clip to a slower
moving clip. All of these factors make the sequence flow well and match with the music fully throughout the
whole video. I originally wanted to start the video with the person waking up and getting ready to leave
however this footage was difficult to film and didn't flow right so instead I started the video with a creative
transition between two locations, a house and the start of the car journey. When the person opens the door
and steps through, they are now in the car on a journey. This provides a quick, and easy way to get from one
place to another and it is a more interesting way to start the video. I really carefully outlined the door at each
stage of it opening with the clipping mask to make sure there were no gaps of the original background
showing so that the transition was a smooth as possible. I also sped up the door opening clip so that I was able
to match the door opening with the first main beat in the music. For the bridge section in the song I placed
one long clip, of me walking along the beach, over a set of 8 short clips, turning down the opacity so all clips
are visible. This created a greater sense of movement during this section. I had orginally planned to use this
section for clips of eating/getting food however I didn't have enough clips of this to fill the space so I decided
it would be better of filled with action and beach clips. For the end of the song I had two possible ideas, one
ending on the beach and the other ending in the same place as the start. With the clips I had, I decided to go
with the second idea and finish where the video started. To do this I copied the entire first section of the video
and place it at the end in reverse and with increased speed. Ending in this way makes it seem more finished
and gives some type of closure. As I had issues with getting the colouring consitent across the whole video I
decided to go down the old footage route instead of making the clips bright and colourful. I placed an effect
over all the footage which adds some over exposure and static. I like how this effect makes the video look
however I think I could have added a colour effect to go along side it to emphaise the old footage idea.
Technical Qualities - Editing
Album Cover:
I had orignally planned out two designs for the album cover but the images I took to match these were bad quality and blurry so I
found another photo that I had taken the same day and decided to use that instead as I thought it also fit the song well. I needed
the cover to be old in style to match the video so I edited the image using the adjustment settings. One of the main parts of this
was the photo filter I added. This allowed me to add a colour over the image so I chose a beige colour as this gave off the best
old vintage style look. I then used a retro looking font and added multiple drop shadows using colours from the main image for
the song name and did the same for the artist name but with a different font. The fonts I used increased the emphasis of the
retro style I was going for. To complete the look I downloaded a dust overlay and placed it over the top of all aspects of the cover.
I repeated the same process with the back of the cover and also added a barcode and the record company's logo. All of these
aspects added together create a matching retro look with the music video. To show what the cover would look like on the
product I downloaded two CD and vinyl templates into photoshop and placed the final images on them.
The adjustment settings + before and after:
Aesthetic Qualities
The retro look of my products shows that the footage is old and you're looking back at it. It also
fits with the song as it is fairly old. The dust, over exxosure and static effects emphasise this
idea the most along with the beige photo filter used on the album cover. The font styles used
on the cover really help to finalise this old style idea. I got this idea across well but I think it
could have benifited from having the same beige colour over the video footage to make it seem
older.
Audience Appeal
My target audience were those who have missed the freedom during the lockdowns of
covid-19, mainly teenagers, and those familiar with the song. To appeal to this audience
I played the friend figure in the video as I fall within the same target audience age
category. I based the video around a previous fun, action filled, day out at the coast to
reminisce on the fun and free times that are missed. I gave the products a retro style to
match the time the song was released which will appeal more to those who are fmailiar
with the song.

  • 3. Research First I researched production techniques, focussing on the techniques I knew I would be using for my video. I listed them and explained what they were and discussed how, where, and why I would be using them. I also provided some video examples I found online for my filming technique. Completing this section in this way allowed me to fully understand the techniques I looked at, allowing this research to be beneficial towards my final piece. Next I researched existing products. I looked at music videos filmed with a POV shot as this was the shot type I was planning to use for my own music video allowing me to get the most of this section. I went into detail, for each video, and pin pointed the key aspects of the production including both filming and editing techniques. I then went on to explain the effect of those techniques and if I would consider using them for my video. This allowed me to see a wide range of techniques used in POV videos that I may be able to include which was very beneficial as I had never worked with POV filming before. I then looked at singles album covers. I analysed them in detail discussing what layout and colouring techniques have been used and their effects on the covers has a whole. This allowed me to start thinking about possible layouts I could use for my own cover and see the most common and effective techniques used in this sector that I could potentially use. I completed a short research analysis to summarise the key parts of my findings and then stated the parts I would be potentially using. This meant I could find my main points a lot easier. I conducted some primary research by creating a questionnaire and asked a series of questions about different aspects of my video. I then analysed the answers I received focusing on the most common responses for each question. These results helped me decide certain things to include in the video, such as activities and food, along with the feelings I need to try and get across. Overall my research was effective and helped me learn more about the techniques I was planning on using, made me aware of techniques I hadn't come across before and helped me to decide certain aspects of my video. It also allowed me to have a stronger starting point to planning the project. However I believe there are some areas where I could make some improvements. When looking at music videos I could have looked at some non POV style videos and looked at some in the same genre as my chosen song to see some techniques and conventions. I could have also included a section solely on genre research going into more detail on the conventions of my chosen songs genre. For the questionnaire I should have shared it around more to get a greater amount of responses to make my results more beneficial to the final piece.
  • 4. Planning The main parts of my planning were the album cover design ideas, storyboard, storyboard examples, and structural breakdown. For the album cover designs I created two brief designs including both front and back of the cover, using general shapes to mark out where things will go along with labels stating what each thing is. These designs gave me rough ideas of how I wanted my cover to look and were useful to refer back to when it came to making it. I then created four pages of a storyboard. I sketched out all of the key frames from my video and wrote a short description explaining what it is along with some details about the type of shot for example, a timelapse. This allowed me to visualise how the video would look and was also good to refer back to while filming and editing my footage. To add to the storyboard, I did a couple image examples of some of the key frames I sketched on the storyboard. This allowed me to visualise even further how the video would look and helped to show the storyboard and my ideas better. My planning played a huge part in my project as it allowed me fully think about every aspect of production. I was able to go into great detail for some sections which created a clearer path forwards for the filming of the video. To improve I could have added more movement lines to the sketches on the storyboard along with some description of what they mean. I also could have been a bit more specific on my structural breakdown as some of my descriptions were quite broad.
  • 5. Time Management I manged to complete everything that I wanted to create for this project on time. I made a timetable, giving myself a certain number of hours for each part of the production, aiming for these targets would help to keep me on track however I did run into some issues and only just managed to finish. The footage I collected on my first day of filming didn't look how I wanted it to meaning I was set back from the start. I went out filming a few more days and the clips still weren't how I planned. This meant I had less time on my editing than originally planned as I had spent lots of time re-filming and re-editing sections. I decided to work overtime and do extra hours at home to make sure I could get it finished and still have time for my CD cover. Working on the video at home allowed me more time to finish off everything else, I was able to improve earlier parts of my project, complete my CD cover and finish all my production on time.
  • 6. Issues that Occurred Emotional: Due to my timing issues, talked about in my time management section, I started to become stressed about not finishing on time and the fact the project wasn't looking how I had planned added to this stress. I then started to have issues with concentration and motivation meaning a lot of time was wasted on just doing nothing. To overcome this I decided to create my final pieces at home, giving me way more time to complete everything. This also meant I could work on improvements and on going evaluation in class making me more productive. As my footage didn't turn out how I had planned, and going back out and filming more wasn't an option due to bad weather, I knew I needed to just work with the footage I had and change my ideas slightly to make it all fit. Once I started to get a few sections of my video together I got my motivation, to complete it, back and worked hard through the extra hours at home to get it all done. Technical: One thing I wanted to do during this project was test out and use more transitions. I tried to create the transitions I did during my experiments however when it came to editing, the separate clips didn't match up correctly. I tried to adjust the angle, speed, and size of the videos to try and make the transitions work but unfortunately they didn't so I ended up just going with a standard cut. Along with this some of my footage didn't come out clearly or just didn't look right with the rest of the video. Most of my unusable footage was supposed to be used at the start of the video so I had to change my idea. I ended up moving the car journey scene closer to the start and also created a new transition for the very beginning. When editing I also tried to make all the footage look more similar by editing the colours and brightness etc, but I found this to be quite difficult and ended up making each clip seem more out of place so I decided to go for a more vintage style and used a filter to make it seem like you're looking back on older footage. This helped make all the footage look like one piece.
  • 7. Technical Qualities - Camera The majority of my footage was clear and of high quality. There were a couple of clips that were out of focus however I only used the good quality footage for my final piece. The lighting in each clip was different however I fixed that a bit later with an effect filter. I kept my shot type consistent throughout all of the footage using a first person perspective like originally planned. The first person perspective makes the viewer feel like they are playing the part in the video so changing the shot type would make this effect less effective. The footage was also smooth in terms of movement, although it is the movements of a person walking, looking around etc, those movements were done smoothly to make sure it is easy on the eye.
  • 8. Technical Qualities - Editing Music Video: There are no gaps between any of the clips meaning they all connect perfectly. The cuts are done to the beat making the footage fully connect with the song. I also added a few short fade transitions to remove the suddeness of some of the cuts between the clips such as where it cuts from a fast moving clip to a slower moving clip. All of these factors make the sequence flow well and match with the music fully throughout the whole video. I originally wanted to start the video with the person waking up and getting ready to leave however this footage was difficult to film and didn't flow right so instead I started the video with a creative transition between two locations, a house and the start of the car journey. When the person opens the door and steps through, they are now in the car on a journey. This provides a quick, and easy way to get from one place to another and it is a more interesting way to start the video. I really carefully outlined the door at each stage of it opening with the clipping mask to make sure there were no gaps of the original background showing so that the transition was a smooth as possible. I also sped up the door opening clip so that I was able to match the door opening with the first main beat in the music. For the bridge section in the song I placed one long clip, of me walking along the beach, over a set of 8 short clips, turning down the opacity so all clips are visible. This created a greater sense of movement during this section. I had orginally planned to use this section for clips of eating/getting food however I didn't have enough clips of this to fill the space so I decided it would be better of filled with action and beach clips. For the end of the song I had two possible ideas, one ending on the beach and the other ending in the same place as the start. With the clips I had, I decided to go with the second idea and finish where the video started. To do this I copied the entire first section of the video and place it at the end in reverse and with increased speed. Ending in this way makes it seem more finished and gives some type of closure. As I had issues with getting the colouring consitent across the whole video I decided to go down the old footage route instead of making the clips bright and colourful. I placed an effect over all the footage which adds some over exposure and static. I like how this effect makes the video look however I think I could have added a colour effect to go along side it to emphaise the old footage idea.
  • 9. Technical Qualities - Editing Album Cover: I had orignally planned out two designs for the album cover but the images I took to match these were bad quality and blurry so I found another photo that I had taken the same day and decided to use that instead as I thought it also fit the song well. I needed the cover to be old in style to match the video so I edited the image using the adjustment settings. One of the main parts of this was the photo filter I added. This allowed me to add a colour over the image so I chose a beige colour as this gave off the best old vintage style look. I then used a retro looking font and added multiple drop shadows using colours from the main image for the song name and did the same for the artist name but with a different font. The fonts I used increased the emphasis of the retro style I was going for. To complete the look I downloaded a dust overlay and placed it over the top of all aspects of the cover. I repeated the same process with the back of the cover and also added a barcode and the record company's logo. All of these aspects added together create a matching retro look with the music video. To show what the cover would look like on the product I downloaded two CD and vinyl templates into photoshop and placed the final images on them. The adjustment settings + before and after:
  • 10. Aesthetic Qualities The retro look of my products shows that the footage is old and you're looking back at it. It also fits with the song as it is fairly old. The dust, over exxosure and static effects emphasise this idea the most along with the beige photo filter used on the album cover. The font styles used on the cover really help to finalise this old style idea. I got this idea across well but I think it could have benifited from having the same beige colour over the video footage to make it seem older. Audience Appeal My target audience were those who have missed the freedom during the lockdowns of covid-19, mainly teenagers, and those familiar with the song. To appeal to this audience I played the friend figure in the video as I fall within the same target audience age category. I based the video around a previous fun, action filled, day out at the coast to reminisce on the fun and free times that are missed. I gave the products a retro style to match the time the song was released which will appeal more to those who are fmailiar with the song.
  • 12. Feedback 1 • What did you like about the product? – The whole concept of the video is great. – The first person was done well – The transition with the door at the start was done really well. – The retro effect on the album cover works really well. • What improvements could have been made to the product? – Make all the footage reflect the pace of the song as some of the scenes are too long.
  • 13. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? – The retro style is really cool – The overlapping clips in the later half made the video more interesting and cool to watch. – The first person worked well it felt like I was the person in the video having fun. – The filter on the album cover and the effect on the video match well. • What improvements could have been made to the product? - The retro effect in the video could have been done better if the actual colour of the video was made to look older too.
  • 14. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? – The transition with the door to the car at the start worked really well and made the video more interesting – The overlapping clips were effective and created a buildup to the end of the song. – The timing of the clips to the music was accurate. – The font on the album cover made it seem more retro • What improvements could have been made to the product? – The pace of the clips could have matched the pace of the music as it didn't really fit. – The videos colour could have been different to match with the filter and the album cover
  • 15. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? • some of the clips were a bit too long for the pace of the music • The transition at that start of the video was done really well • The timing of the clips to the music were accurate • The album cover and video match well in style • The over lapping clips section worked well • The videos colour could have been changed to match the retro style more • The font on the album cover made it seem more retro • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? • The clips didn't match with the pace of the video - I think that only a few of the clips didn't match but most of them did. • The first person was done well - I think that the first person POV is alright but it could be much better and more effective
