The document provides a self-evaluation of a student's short film project. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the student's research, planning, production, and product. For research, conducting a survey and case studies on other films were identified as strengths, while time constraints due to weather were a weakness. For planning, mind maps were helpful but health and safety paperwork took too much time. Production went well within the scheduled time frame. The student felt their short film looked good visually but could have been more creative and improved aspects like camerawork, storytelling, and acting. Peer feedback noted good music, atmosphere and scenery but a confusing story where the music did not fit as well. The student agrees with peers that the story
3. Strengths
A strength of the research was that I got to do a survey and in this survey I was able to see my audience responses to different
topics and come to an understanding about what I should include or what they would me rather put in or add to my short film
and this is extremely helpful because it demonstrates what I need to add into my work on the short film and see other peoples
opinions, I personally prefer interviews because in interviews you are able to challenge there opinion and get better answers
that can further your research. I found going through stats of other short films and the popularity of short film genres to be
very interesting doing that little case study showed me what type of short film I should make and what had the bigger
audience. I also found looking through similar existing products to be extremely helpful as it provided insight as to what they
included and how I should include the same types of things on mine. I also found the experiments to be useful because it gave
me chance to use the camera and equipment as well as practice my editing before actually doing my project.
Weaknesses
I felt the timing that I had to be a big weakness on research there was bad weather conditions while I was completing it with
snow and this led to me not being able to get to college where all my saved work was and complete it which was an issue a bit
of a big one but in the end I was able to get it done but with more time I could have improved it a great deal more.
What affects it had on my product
I felt it had a lot of affect on my product for a start it provided me with insight on different techniques I could use when
filming as well as letting me look at what other short films have done especially the successful ones this shows me how I could
improve on my work by using these research techniques in filming and style and I feel that this effected my work in what I
tried to make and do when making it which I felt was a good way to improve my work. One thing I feel I should of done much
better on is the filming as the camera was very blurry and could have been much better if I had paid more attention to the
detail while filming so when I added it to edit and saw the blur I was not pleased with the work or myself for letting it get like
that. Its defiantly something that I would improve upon.
4. Strengths
Strengths of the planning was the mind map I felt that the mind map was very helpful part of my planning as it allowed me
the ability to write down all my ideas that I had at the time on each potential which was a massive help tom me when making
the project because I was able to plan it out and then when making it go back to the mind map as references to see what I did
and didn’t include. I also found contingency planning helpful as it keeps me in check a if I forget something I have spare plan
just in case and I find that useful and a strength however I did not need to follow the plan in the end.
Weaknesses
I felt that the health and safety although a requirement was a weakness as it took away lots of time in planning and research
and other things to fill out a health and safety things that could go wrong when its obvious what could and couldn’t go wrong
health and safety wise and the solutions to the problems are even more obvious which is just even more time consuming for
no reason at all. This unit time has been a massive issue for me due to weather conditions as I did what I could at home but a
lot of the work when doing planning was saved on the apple computer which meant I couldn’t get to it at home luckily I
completed it all on time but if I had of had more time on the work I feel I could have done a much better job and got it to a
much better standard.
Affects on my product
The planning was very useful when making my product because I new exactly what I was going to do what shots I was going
to use and how I was going to use it as well as story set out and other visuals to include from the mind maps I found this most
useful and it defiantly took affect on my product in a positive way overall but a negative affect that it took is that while
spending more time on my planning it gave me less time on my production but I do feel I had just enough time on it in the end
to get it done to a good standard.
5. I feel that I managed the time that I had well first of all on the first week it was initial plan, I feel that the time I was given
for initial plans wasn’t nearly enough time, I did complete on time and to the deadline but my problem lies with what it could
of done to initial plans with more time because for the most part I tried my best to get it done but with more time I could of
spent more and more time on each part of the work going through it and checking to make sure everything is ok and on point
I feel that overall more time could of improved very part of initial plans. For research we was also given a week to complete
this as well as experiments which was a lot to do in a week, ample time to get it to pass standard and in on time which is the
top grade but not enough time to get it to high standard as practice for the fmp, I did get research done and in on time but
with more time I could have defiantly produced better work for the research and I feel with more time researching I could
have learnt more things and gained more ideas that could have defiantly bettered my short film. I then had a week for my
proposal and pre production and I was late on these two I spent far to much time on pre production my time management on
that could have been so much better and I take that into account that I failed myself on that part, but I did in the end get it
completed and to the required standard, with more time I would still have got it in on time but to the same standard I needed
to watch my time keeping on that one. The proposal however I got in and done on time which is better then the pre production
with more time I would have used it to focus on pre production so it wouldn’t have made a big change in the outcome of
quality on the proposal. Next I had to complete the production and production reflection which I did get done on time and to a
good standard. With more time on these I cold have completed it to batter standard however if I had of made myself better n
time management I would have had more time anyway so time management is defiantly something I need to work on.
6. Similarities – both my film and insidious use the same type of camera shots, I include the basics such as a panning shot of
the room, close up, tracking shots medium shot and so on, and insidious uses all these shots as well, a good example of this
is in insidious the opening of the film sets the scene of the room with a panning shot and the opening to my film also sets the
scene and tone of the film with a panning shot.in insidious when a character is scared it uses a close up shot and my short
film does the same which is another similarity.
Differences – a difference is the cameras used, throughout my entire film I only used one cameras where as in insidious they
have lots cameras and microphones and audio recorders as well as different types of tri pods for there different shots as well
as drones for birds eye view shots which I wasn’t able to get. The way the camera is straight. Where I was filming the floor
was on a wonk and it was difficult to try and get it straight and in line where as on insidious every shot is straight and
balanced perfectly.
7. Watch Trailer
Similarities – a big similarity in this is the way the music is used, although there is a difference in how the music sounds it is
used in the same way, in my short film I used cheery but creepy music, or the best I could get it to be with what I had to go
over a dark and depressing short film, the similarity is that in insidious they use a creepy version of a cheery song or more
they take what's meant to be a cheery song and turn it into something else and my example of that it tip toe through the tulips
a song associated with happy feelings once appearing on SpongeBob square pants a kids show on nickelodeon they take the
same song and make it creepy even though it sounds exactly the same, although my work is no where near as good in quality
as the movie the similarity is that mine attempts to do the same. Another similarity is the basic audio recordings of footsteps
and doors creaking.
Differences – one difference is that the insidious has weather condition audio something that my short film although I really
wanted to try and fit that in unfortunately I didn’t get chance to include it in any of the footage that I gathered, having weather in
audio in a movie is great way to set the tone of the movie. Insidious also has a soundtrack which mine is lacking in greatly to the
quality my film has the same track the whole way through which is although lazy the best I could do in the time I had to get it
finished, insidious has a huge range of soundtrack all the way throughout providing different atmospheres for the different scenes
which I feel is a really good feature.
8. Similarities – there are not many similarities between this big budget film and my no budget film from post
production to editing, but the way the transition slides last about half a second is a similarity and the reason for this
is because it creates a little small gap between scenes to get the viewer a small chance to process what they just saw
and let it sink in and I feel that there is a similarity there although mine doesn’t compare to the story telling or
editing done when I researched this movie on research I did try and take as many things I could possibly do similar
away from it. Another similarity is how the sound affects are edited in, I made sure as this film did that the sound
affects happened when they was supposed to happen, it sounds obvious but some films have mistakes where its not at
the right time and so that is another thing out of the few that we did similar while editing it.
Differences – there are lots of differences, for a star on post production insidious has full team of people working on
story boards planning etc.. This is a difference because for my film it was just me. Another difference is that this film
had a budget over 50 million dollars to spend on making it where as mine had no money into production. Another
difference on editing is that they had a full team of people behind James wan on editing the film where as it was just
me editing. Another difference in editing is that the music is placed and played at right times and different songs on
different moments where as mine is one track throughout. Another difference is that the shots flow and are edited
perfectly every shot leads after another where as on my short film my shorts have jumps where things ant as
accurate. The final difference to mention is insidious had a year and half on production mine had 2 weeks.
9. Does the work look good?
I feel like the work does look good although it
could be much better, I think I got the tone
just right visually I looks as I wanted it to
with the lighting in the time that I had and
the place I was at with what I had I feel like I
did a good job. When editing it I made it more
neat improving how it looked, so yes I would
say I do feel that my work looks good.
Was it creative?
i feel that the idea that I had if ambitious was
very creative and I could have definitely made
something that fit the story unfortunately on
the day the person playing the evil spirit/
spooky eerie shadow man said they couldn’t
come last minute and my 3 cast members said
they had to go after 2 hours of filming not
giving me much time to alter the story and try
and salvage it and give me enough footage so
when editing it I could still try and salvage it.
I feel that saying its creative is accurate but it
depends on your interpretation of the short
film not that there's much to interpret.
What visuals do I like?
I like the visual darkness at certain points I
feel it brings in the atmosphere and that’s
what I felt I needed to put into my work.
Other parts of the visuals need improvements
as there are parts to it where its blurry at
times which I would have reshot with more
time, or remade the entire movie from scratch.
But I feel that the visuals in certain scenes
are good and I like them.
What would I improve?
I would improve the informational scenes
basically the whole visual story telling,
my film due to problems ends leaving
everything including the entire short
film scene for scene up for interpretation.
I would improve the camera shots, the
blur on the scenes, the visuals, the
acting, the direction and also the timing
to makes sure that would be able to do it
on a re run.
How would I improve it?
I would improve it by re doing it, in
0order to do this I would need better
time management and increase the
number of days spent filming and time
spent filming on the day with this it
gives more time for people to show up
less excuses if they cant show up and
gives me more time to try and fix
things that have not gone to plan. I
would also spend more time on
planning and research as well as pre
production and revert back to them a
lot more for help and guidance when
making my short film that’s how I
would improve it if I could.
Strengths
A strength of this short film is that It was
great practice with cameras and editing and
will defiantly help me when it comes to fmp
as I can learn from my failures on this and
next time be much more prepared and
ready. I think that making the soundtrack
was a strength I learned what instruments
was available on garage band and how the
type of instruments that where available
worked.
Weaknesses
A weakness of this part of the work was the
timing I had on it and my time
management. On the production I had to
rely on other people like cast who let me
down a great deal by not being able to show
up on the day that we had all arranged and
since it was a big role it caused me to have
to re plan and structure the work which lead
to a very different short film to what I had
planned, with more time I could have
arranged another day and with more time
management form my side I would have had
more days.
Analysis
My work is good and like the look of it but
its not what I wanted as an end product and
I'm disappointed in it as a whole and know I
can do much better.
10. Yes I feel I have appealed to my target audience. But could have done a better job the target audience from the questionnaire liked
the idea of the main antagonist not been show at all through the movie and I did not show an antagonist which appeals to the
audience from the questionnaire, also in the questionnaire they wanted a dark tone, felt it fits the scene of a horror movie, I have
delivered on that or so I feel by changing that atmosphere in the kitchen darker each scene I was able to create suspense. I also feel I
delivered on the audience appeal on the soundtrack as it is cheery is and classical creating a different vibe to what's on the screen
which is nice contrast that insidious does really well and has an audience for it and my attempt to pull it off in the same way I feel
appealed to them well. I also feel I have appealed to my audience on how it is edited together, it has small transitions of black
screens for half a second and this is to provide a thought time to let things sink in with the audience between scenes.
12. What did you like about the product?
“ I felt that the product was good and well presented, the music is
good, the different shots that are used work really well. I like the
tone of the short film.”
What improvements could have been made to the product?
“the music could fit better, the scenes could make more sense and
the story is hard to understand so some work could be needed on
that.”
13. What did you like about the product?
“the acting in it is good and the sound affects work really well and
are well timed, the music sounds good.”
What improvements could have been made to the product?
“Plot is hard to understand, could be done better, the music
although sounds good doesn’t fit that well.”
14. What did you like about the product?
“the scenery is nice in the short film and the atmosphere of the
film, I like the music in the film.”
What improvements could have been made to the product?
“the story is confusing and difficult to understand, the music could
fit better and the acting could also be better for the main
character.”
15. What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with the story not making much sense and that is defiantly
something that needs a lot of work on it, I also agree that the
music could have fit better on the work, it was meant to be
contradicting of the tone but I understand why some people
wouldn’t like it and I can defiantly do a better job of making the
music more like what it should be and I should have managed my
time better to be able to do that.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
There is only one part of the feedback that I disagree with and that
is that the sound affects where always well timed I feel there
where moments that I missed where sound affects where a bit off
and so I disagree with that bit of the feedback.
16. To start with I would focus a lot more on visual story telling making sure that the story is well told without audio and makes
sense as the feedback critism pointed out it was difficult to understand and I take that into large account and I would defiantly
focus on changing that so it was much easier to understand and read, I would also change the music so it was eerie and fit the
tone, the truth is that I struggled trying to make it eerie especially when garage band only gives me 4 instruments to use non of
which have a dark tone to it. The big improvement is time management if I had managed my time better then I defiantly could
have made big improvements to the overall outcome of the entire project and also the short film if I had of been much more
organised.
