3. Research
Overall I think my research was good. The best of it was looking into multiple
music videos by the same artist. I think this was good as it gave me a good
insight into what I felt worked for his style of music. It helped give me a good
platform in which to start planning out what I wanted to create and helped
me gather ideas together.
However I think it was quite bare, I couldve looked into smaller details and
done more style sheets to do with the colours he uses and look more into any
effects or post production corrections he makes within his videos.
Another thing I included within my research was looking at what his take on
his songs were and how this was adapted into certain music videos. I think for
the music he( Gus Dapperton) creates itâs a lot about emotion and I wish id
been more able to portray this through my own acting
4. Planning
Overall the planning itself was good. A lot of my original ideas were either slightly
altered or kept quite similar as when they came out. However as for back up plans it
was awful, several hours of filming didnât go as planned and I was left quite halted in
my tracks and not sure where to move onto next. This was because I hadnât got many
back up ideas for each scene for when one either didnât fit the aesthetic or just didnât
work or look as good as I wanted it to. My planning with others to help me film didnât
go well either as each time we had planned to film they cancelled for reasons out of
my control, this ended up being another major setback especially with time
management. My original ideas I feel like I planned out well on the story board and on
the page where I've used the digital pen to annotate ( may not be clear for others but
it was just to express my thinking). My other plans included a story board which
looking back seems quite low quality and not detailed enough, especially since most
of the ideas ended up not being used due to me not liking how it looked.
5. Time Management
Time management had been good until it was sent into chaos by a couple of
factors partially out of my control. First of all after a lot of filming I did turned
out to not be what I wanted, either didnât look correct, I wasnât happy with it
or just wasnât the quality that I wanted. I was left halted and wondering how I
could change the scenes to something I was more capable of filming. The
second major issue was when people who said they would help film kept
cancelling, this really set the plan back as it meant days I had set aside were
wasted as I was waiting for replies on what was happening. The final set back
was when College was closed to flooding, this meant I couldnât get in to
collect my work to edit at home over the weekend as we werenât allowed in
and the rest of the week I am at work, the files were also too large to upload
or email across. With more time there was more scenes id have liked to have
tried to film and different effects and styles id have liked to have tried in post
production.
6. Time Management
Videos that didnât make it purely as I didnât like how they looked
These were only the ones that I had moved over from my camera. The clips that are from
a mirror was I didnât like the angle and I had no way of getting the camera up higher so it
was more ofa face to face looking shot. The colors aswell I felt didnât look right aswell as
the lighting in most. A majority of the bottom row is purely again to do with the angles
and that I couldnât get it in a way that I liked and personally thought looked not only good
but also appropriate to the pice
7. Time Management
My final issue that occurred with timing was that
my trial for adobe encoder has expired. This has
prevented me from being able change issues that
were brought up from feedback, this included slight
issues with the tracking of the light, appears to
early in areas and is slightly off in another part.
Aswell as one of the clips in the car not having the
mask overlay which creates the border. If I had
more time on my trial I would have fixed this and
more time in general I would have gone back into
college and fixed it there.
8. Technical Qualities
MASKING AN OVERLAY
After seeing the old tv in the studio I knew
this was something I wanted to do and
recreate from what id seen in The tv
performance of âSUPALONELYâ . Personally
this is one of the shots I really like and I feel
has become one the main hooks of my
video. Adding glitch effects for when it cuts
in and out of different shots and adding the
noise and grain I think really made the shot
unique and aesthetically appealing
IMPROVEMENTS
I think one of the main ways I would redo
this shot is to improve the lighting so I can
be seen a lot clearer as it is very dark.
However whilst filming if we made it any
brighter the creases and cracks in the
backing became more apparent. Another
way in which I could improve this is by
making the masking better. Its not as
cleanly cut as the shot I am basing it off
9. Technical Qualities
Adding together the masking of clips to make
them look like they are videos being played on
the tv and a lens flare became the main hook of
my video .
I think this shot was
really good, all thought
it was mostly made by
the edits I really liked
how it turned out. I
think the slow increase
of the light looked really
good as well as the
tracking of it on my
hand. From my
perspective it was
smooth and moved
nicely. However in first
clip of this I tried to
make it look like it was
flickering but it ended
up just looking like it
slides up and down
every few seconds
Although I didnât get
an inspiration for this
exact edit/effect it
came into light from
not being able to do
something different.
Originally I wanted it
to be a flame and to
look like my hand was
just cast into fire,
which Iâve seen in
many different forms
of media. After trying
to make a realistic
looking flame on my
hand I wasnât able to,
again with more time
or better
management this
could maybe have
been possible.
However I think I like
the b plan better
I think the effect looks really good
and is very fitting to the song as it
talks about a light. This was one of
my more creative ideas.
10. Technical Qualities
Again a main aspect of
these shots was the
masking of a secondary
video onto the tv.
However with the glitch
clip I needed to change
the colours as it seemed
too bright and vibrant for
what was meant to be a
recording on an old
television. I did this by
dropping the saturation
and upping the blacks
using the lumetri colour
scales in premiere pro
Adding the noise and grain on top of
this clip aswell as editing the colour,
really helped make it blend in and
appear more natural and fitting.
I really like this set of
clips and think it was a
good idea for breaking up
the footage and using it
as a layover to transition
from one clip to another.
It also adds to the feel of
this being an old slightly
broken tv.
11. Aesthetic Qualities
I really like the shots I have got for
the opening verse. A majority are of
a journey in a car but I think the
colours really match what I was going
for and really helps the blacks to
stand out
My main issue, especially with these low light
shots was that the quality of the footage isnât
great. Its quite grainy and fuzzy. Luckily this fits
the overall feel of my video but for future
projects a new camera is something I should
probably look in to getting.
Although the font style, the size or colouring is the same as in
the video I used for inspiration to the main aesthetic picture is
quite similar. Both set in rural areas with a huge comparison
between the earth colours of the trees grass and road to the
much lighter, brighter colours in the sky. I really liked these shots
because of this and how much the blue really stands out
I think having a different color
to white would have been
nice.
However finding a colour that
fit without it being absorbed
into the shot was hard so I had
to settle for white
12. Aesthetic Qualities
I wanted to create a shot that was similar
to this one, with a long road in a rural area
with some form of light distortion. Luckily
for me a car came past as I was taking the
shot which I think really added to it. All
though there is no real narrative behind it I
think it looks really good and the lighting
and exposure works really well for what I
was trying to recreate, albeit a lot darker
than the original.
I think it was quite a creative shot,
we had to go down many of the
back roads and take loads of
videos. This was one of my
favorite shots just like the opening
scene. I really like the way it looks
and the layout. I think it works
really well with the style of video I
wanted to achieve in terms of
aesthetics
13. Aesthetic Qualities
More than comparing the two looks
of the shot this is for the Textured
border outline of the video. I saw
that in the music video for âBluebirdâ
he had an outline that looked like it
was old film, it jumps around and
looks like its rolling or burning away
and I really liked it
Although I wasnât able
to recreate the
animation of his
overlay and maybe had
more time or managed
the time I had better I
wouldâve been able to
potentially find a way
to do this. However
what I did make with
the outline I really
liked, I think it looked
neat and created the
effect I wanted it to. I
feel the shots look a lot
better with this than
being the full screen
Creating it was very
simple, I added a black
layer behind all the
footage and just added
a mask overlay to my
shots so the back was
visible and then
feathered the mask so It
wasnât completely
straight lines. For how
simple it was to do I
really like it and think it
looks good.
14. Audience Appeal
The question on my questionnaire with the biggest one sided swing was the
narrative (3) or shots(11) question (5). This being said I've attempted to focus a
majority of the footage on the shots looking good and the effects looking clean
and effective. My severe lack of acting skills has also helped with lowering the
amount of narrative cause there is very little emotion being displayed no matter
how hard I try, which is nice as it gives it a more neutral feel and will allow the
viewer to have their own interpretations of the song. This in turns allows it to
appeal to a larger audience as its not set in stone to a single narrative or feel.
Similar to Stuart halls reception theory, people will have their own takings of
the video and will lower the amount of oppositional views against the video.
These shots especially would be ideal for the
audience portfolio we gathered from the
questionnaire as itâs a creative and
aesthetical shot yet there is no direct
narrative but allows the reader to infer there
on meaning or reasons as to âwhy?â.
16. Feedback 1

I didnât understand the random clip of you
looking at the camera rubbing your face.
17. Feedback 2
⢠What did you like about the product?
â The effects used on the tv scene, thought these
were done well and looked really good
⢠What improvements could have been made to
the product?
⢠Not a big fan of the on and off of clips in the
first verse
18. Feedback 3
⢠What did you like about the product?
â Really like the added effects of the tv gltiches as well
as the light effect on your hands on the tv, looks really
good and professional
⢠What improvements could have been made to
the product?.
⢠I donât completely understand all the first shots of
the countryside areas
19. Peer Feedback Summary
⢠What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
â I agree with the edits of the tv scenes, im very
proud of these and think they look really good
⢠What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
⢠Most of the improvements were based on the
take on the song and video and I feel thatâs
fine, for me I like the opening scenes.
20. Peer Feedback Summary
Overall I am happy with the feedback, maybe adding some
mores shots and footage to try and add more depth and give
explanation for some of the shots would be good aswell as if
I had had more time I couldve done more of the shots that Id
have planned but were cut shorts due to cancellation and
being too hard to film by myself.
I wish id had more critisicm on what they disliked and what
couldve been changed rather then saying what they didnât
understand about the video. However I suppose this gives
me more insight in that my videos need more explanation,
espeically with a song that can have multiple takes on the
meaning.
