3. Research
• Doing my research was quite simple; I chose three existing products that were similar to
three different aspects of my product: Reading, technology and an indie style. This was
helpful because I could analyse the difference between these three very different magazine
and better understand the similarities to use In my product, or at least understand how I can
combine these differences to work well my magazine. A weakness that can develop with
researching other products is that you may start to overthink your own work, or become to
inspired by other products.
• I also made a audience profile so I would know who to target my product at. A strength for
this is that you can really develop your product around this profile and appeal greatly to your
target audience. A fault is that your product may only target your primary audience, and may
leave much to be desired from other types of people who could otherwise be interested in
your product.
4. Planning
• Personally I find that the layout plans that I created were not very detailed and didn’t have
any visual queues to go on regarding how to setup my product. However, they did allow me
to reflect on where exactly content was meant to go on the cover/double page spread and
allowed me map out everything quite simply. A flaw of this could be that you feel like you
have no creative freedom, as everything will be already mapped out for you.
• For the style sheet I gathered colours, pictures and fonts style that could inspire me too
create the right magazine. This was helpful as I could draw inspiration for pictures and
colours included to create my product, and have a various amount of fonts set up that I can
use in the final piece. A weakness is that it is not very specific, sometimes having things to
draw inspiration from hinder you as it requires more thinking when you supposed to just be
putting stuff into action.
• My contingency plan can be helpful if anything goes wrong, as it allows you to think through
errors that can happen. However, a weakness could be that some of the things written a very
low risk and that I may no have included something that does actually go wrong.
• The schedule helps to map out what specific thing you are doing to further your product on
specific days. This is helpful as it gives you a guideline to fallow. It is not helpful because it can
sometime constrict time and make you feel overwhelmed.
5. Time Management
• Time management was a big part of this project. Before even beginning the project it was
good to already have the images and fonts prepared before going into production to save
time. Also there was schedule prepared that could be referred back to if thinks felt
unmanageably, however I found sticking to the schedule hard. If I had more time, I think the
PowerPoints for this project would be a lot more detailed.
6. Technical Qualities
My product used the leading and spacing
tool to make the writing more slim and
tightly placed to fit the striking and sharp
font.
This product used the leading and
spacing tool to make the letter bold and
quite separated to go with thick and
curvy font.
This product used the
transformation tool to make the
main image fill the whole page
so the page looked filled.
I used the transformation tool to
make my main image quite small and
sit on the page with a lot of space
around it to make it look
minimalistic.
I used the ruler to make all of my
content was in the centre of the
page.
This products anchorage is to the right
or centre, which was possibly done by
finding a the centre with the ruler
tool.
7. Aesthetic Qualities
This magazine uses a thin black
border to appeal to the minimalistic
look of their spread. This could be a
weakness because it is not a typical
convention for double page spreads
to have a border, and if you did it
on every page it would take the
authenticity away from the
magazine.
My product uses a bold golden border to
match the eye catching and modern
background, however the border may be to
big and take up too much room on the page.
The main picture of the spread is a girl in a
very naturistic environment, a candid shot
with simple colours that match the calming
aesthetic. Its simple. A weakness is that the
meek colour scheme could almost make the
magazine quite miss-able.
My main image is busy and vibrant, with
model wearing plain colours but bolder
more outlandish colours surrounding her.
The pink in the font makes it stand out, but
the words in background could make it look
busy.
The article is set in columns and looks neat and
tidy, tight on the spread. Because the font is
quite basic and small, it may not draw in
readers attention much.
The article is detailed and
classic, contrasting the rest of
the busy page – however the
picture opposite the article
leaves a lot of wasted space/
8. Audience Appeal
Age: My front cover will appeal to my target age of 15 – 25 because it fits the modern, minimalistic and indie
aesthetic that is popular to young adults. Because on both products it features a young and youthful looking
model, this age category will relate to the product. The double page spread is vibrant and eye-catching because
of the colours and fonts used, this will read as an entertaining piece of work with perhaps an interesting article
to the young adult who enjoy interesting subjects but will get bored by basic articles.
Social status: My product will appeal to middle class and upper class people because of the sleek style on the
cover and perhaps the price, as it is quite expensive but these classes of people don’t stereotypically have to
worry about prices.
Physiographic: My target audience of socially conscious type A and balanced will like my products because of
the subjects their about; caring about books and poetry require you to care about the world, which I feel
people in these psychographics will do.
Gender: My primary female target audience will enjoy the front cover because of the soft, airy and light colours
and identify with the young woman model on the cover. Also poetry, the main topic of the magazine, is
sometimes seen as feminine because of the emotional and romantic aspects of it.
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the overall aesthetic of the front cover, the colours work well
together and the typography works really well with the layout. Using
shapes and borders have helped guide the layout and audience to the
information and keep it clear.
– The double page is very clear and organised well to suit conventions.
The images and colour scheme works well.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• The front cover has a lot of negative space which looks slightly bare,
resizing the image larger may suit it better and adding a short pull
quote or a small cover line would bring the image together.
• The double page Instagram post sub images could have had a
Instagram tag or some context close to them for the reader.
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– It looks very real, I couldn’t tell the difference on
what was what. I like the text style and colour and
the aesthetic of the inside page thing. It’s also well
organised and not too crowded
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The second image of the woman looks a little
ragged (not as professional)
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The images used in the magazine are clear and placed in
places that would be seen quickly for the reader.
– The font used is easy to read and also fits the theme of the
magazine
– The layout of the text looks professional and not just
thrown together but has plenty of thought in it
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– The text on the side of the title facing different ways was a
bit confusing
– The black outline of the text “Instagram poet” mixes with
the text in the background
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– On the feedback somebody said that my cover met magazine conventions very well,
which I agree with because I used a lot of the same features seen on many other
magazine of the same aesthetic.
– On the feedback multiple people said the fonts and typography worked well and were
very clear. I agree with this because I spent a lot of time with leading and spacing, so I
think the fonts and typography fit the page and serve the purpose perfectly.
– I agree that the spacing around the front cover can make it look it a little bare – If I could
now, I would add in a tagline between the spaces to pull it all together as the feedback
suggested.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– I disagree that black stroke around the title on the double page spread blends in with
the background. I think it ties the page together nicely and blends the tow different
fonts together in a clear and precise way.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
- Based on my peer feedback, I would add a tagline or an anchorage between the free
space on the front cover to make it look less bland and bare. I would also add some
Instagram symbolism or icons into the double page spread for further representation.
The text turned to its side on cover can be a little confusing, so I would experiment
with it and see if I can make it more clearer.
- I would make the border on the double page spread much smaller as I think it crowds
the main picture and the article too much. I would make the front cover and double
page spread look more aesthetically similar.
