2. Research
• I think my research went quite well and it also helped that I already knew quite a lot
about my subject which was fashion. One of the strengths was that I knew what I
wanted to look for. I found it quite easy to look into magazines and which ones to base
my product off as some of them I read normally anyway. This helped my product
because it means that I already knew the layouts and font etc used in these magazines.
I also think that researching the brands for my 700+ words was easy because for a few
of the brands I know a lot about them so I can just write off the top of my head for
those brands but for some I had to research and look at several Wikipedia pages. One of
the weaknesses of my research was trying to find a suitable background that would
allow me to have depth and add perception so I could have people stood behind
objects.
• I looked at many magazines but the main two were the Hypebeast magazines and the
supreme ones. This allowed me to look at how they implemented photos and text on
the double page spreads especially. If I were to improve my research I would look more
in depth into how the photos are taken and this would maybe help me getting a more
realistic and professional feel on my photos. I think my research into text worked well as
they mainly have the text in blocks and in the supreme magazines the text was all in
one big block. I used this in my product although I understand it may deter people from
reading it as it looks more like an essay than an easy to read magazine.
3. Planning
• I think my planning went quite well overall and I managed to stay on track will
my plan throughout most of my production. My mind maps on my initial plans
were quite detailed and one of my strengths as it allowed for me to merge the
ideas I had together to get one good final idea. I also think that my mood
board and analysis worked quite well as I explained many of the photos and
showed things that would end up bring inspiration for my images I have used
in my finished product. My planning helped with my product a lot. It mainly
acted as guidance for when I had parts I was stuck on for example when I
couldn’t find a suitable image for the front page, I looked back to my
experiments and remembered the water techniques I had practiced and
planned.
• One of my weaknesses of planning was my style sheet. I believe I could have
added an analysis to why I have chosen those certain colours and fonts. I also
believe that it would have helped with my work if I have had a few back up
fonts and colour schemes as I had to think of some suitable ones on the spot
which proved quite challenging. If I had written more about these and had
more back up designs it would have helped my product by allowing me to get
on with my work faster instead of having to stop and think about what font
and colours I wanted to pick next.
4. Time Management
• I think I managed my time well as I was either on time for every deadline
or ahead of schedule. I think that all of my work was up to the best of my
ability for the time I had except for the pre-production where I could have
done with a little more time but I still completed the task. I do think that if
I had more time I could have improved each part of my work especially my
production where I could have added more pages and text on each page. I
also think if we had less things to complete in week two I could have
produced a better standard of work.
• If I had more time to produce my work I think I would just add more detail
to my writing and also a few more pages to my magazine. I also think I
would have taken a few more photos just to have more of a verity of poses
and outfits throughout the magazine.
5. Technical Qualities
In my front cover there are a few similarities.
For example the masthead is pretty much the
same on each except I used a larger and
different font. Also the main focus’ of the
covers are both people and their clothes. Some
things that are different are that my cover has a
lot more text on it. This is because I believed it
looked too bland even thou my style was to be
minimalistic, I thought it looked too boring to
get a good grade. I think my front cover is quite
skilfully crafted even though it may not be the
hardest to make, I still think it turned out good.
I used Photoshop on every image in the
magazine and I don’t think its very hard to tell
that, but not in a bad way as that was what I
was trying to achieve. I used a lot of the magic
wand tool and polygonal lasso. I then used the
rubber tool to get rid of the white outline or
glowing spots left after I used the lasso. I have
already explained how I made the reflection
effect in my production reflection so I do not
want to repeat the same points over and over
again.
6. Technical Qualities
On this double page spread there are some
very visible similarities. The main one is the
text and smaller image on the right. This
technique is taken straight from the
magazine on the right as I believe it looks
very nice and neat. Another similarity is that
there is an image that takes up all of the
page on the left. One thing that stands out
as different is that my image literally fills the
whole page whereas in this example it does
not. Most of the pages in the Hypebeast
magazines have full image pages such as
mine. I used the same technique of cutting
out as in the front cover and all the other
pictures I created. I decided to make a
zoomed in image in the top corner to act as
more of a showcase and give this page more
of a lookbook feel to it. I also cut out shapes
of the background which I think gives the
page a bit more to look at as there is no text
on he left page.
7. Technical Qualities
This was my second double page spread and
I tried to make it more of an advertisement
style of magazine page. A similarity that can
be clearly seen is the bar at the bottom with
the text in. I decided to place an image of
one of the pieces on the bottom right
instead of the brand because I already had
the brands at the top and also nobody in the
image was wearing the brand because I
made up my own hoodie using Photoshop
tools, mainly colour changing and a soft
brush. For the contents page I tried to make
the writing the main feature but also have
some images of us in their too, to act as the
fashion element of the magazine. For the
text in the middle of the right page, I
decided on that gradient for the colour as it
reflects the colour of the logos of the brand.
I used the same method as I used to cut out
the people used in the magazine. I then used
the warp tool to curve the text as I think it
looks more fitting.
8. Aesthetic QualitiesI decided to choose these fonts as I believe
that then reflect the mood and tone of the
magazine. The mood being serious and the
tone being fantasy. The masthead font is
closely related to a video game named final
fantasy which most people will have heard
of and it may grab more attention for the
magazine. It also is very easy to read which
helps the serious tone and the black color
stands out against the grey box. The text on
the right is the same font I used for my
actual text in my magazine. This is because
it is neat and slightly old timey which
reflects how fashion can be old and new. It
also stands out on the backgrounds where
it is placed and is a nice contrast to the
serious thicker font used for the masthead.
The reason I chose the wavy font is because
it reflects the warped and twisted theme of
the fantasy backgrounds in this magazine. It
also reflects the rippling water and the
white outline with the see through center
of the lettering. It is also quite a thick and
diverse font allowing me to work with it
easily and do things such as submerged it in
the water or place it being objects, which is
shown in my finished product.
I decided that since it is an artistic
magazine, I should try and make the
barcode look more abstract and different
from other magazines without making it
look out of place or ridiculous. I decided to
thin the barcode out and rotate it 90
degrees just so it makes you tilt your head a
bit and make the consumer look for other
smaller details in the magazine.
For the placement of the people I decided
to put one in each area of the cover. One
on the right, one on the left and one in the
middle. I also wanted one in the front, one
in the middle and one in the back. I wanted
this because it makes the consumer look all
around the page and find everything I have
added and placed in there. Also, if the
consumer has more to look at around the
page it has more things with potential of
attracting an audience. The text is carefully
placed where the audience will see it first
for example people read top to bottom left
to right. This is why I placed the masthead
in the top left and then the less important
information below it. The reason I placed
some of my text behind trees and bushed is
because I am trying to make the reader
work to understand the magazine and this
reflects how fashion artists nowadays are
always striving to make consumers
understand their work.
The reflections have all been placed to
look as realistic as possible and from the
skills I have I think they look quite
realistic. They are all placed on the same
angles to show that I understand that
the sun is in one place therefore
produces a reflection in the same
direction for every person. I then
applied the warp tool and tried to create
a similar pattern for each ripple in front
of the people although I didn’t want the
exact same as it would then look
unrealistic. I think the reflections add
another layer of realism to the magazine
and just make the experience better.
9. Aesthetic QualitiesI decided to place the close
up if the does in the top
right because I thought the
top of the page looked quite
plain. I added a small border
because I think it deserved
to stand out a bit more as it
slightly blende into the
background. I chose the
color of dark blue for the
box because it can be found
in the page but helps it
stand out more. I also think
it makes it look more like an
actual magazine page which
is trying to advertise
clothes.
The reason I chose to place
the people where they are
is because I wanted them to
be central but not in the
middle of the page. I moved
them down from the center
as I believe it allows room
for more components and
things that are symmetrical
and un-natural. I placed
myself in the middle
because it looks better as I
am the tallest.
The reason I decided to cut out the shapes in the background and the outlines of the people is
because the page had a lot of free areas to fill. I think these geometric shapes just give a bit more of
a fantasy feel and also makes the image more interesting to look at. I believe these shapes give the
foreground of the page a bit more depth.
I decided to add the logos in because I
believe the page looked very bland and
plain without them. It gives the reader
a little more to look at and it also tells
the reader what the text may be
written about. I created all of these
logos myself in Photoshop which
means that it has a bit more of a
personal eel to it and gives the page
more of a homemade feel as a whole.
This also makes the page feel a little
more abstract which is the feel I was
going for. Although I wanted my page
to be abstract and not contain much I
still needed more of a focus piece.
The reason I decided to make the text
in a box is because it suits the
geometric style of the page on the left
and the images above. It also makes
the page look a lot neater and easier to
read as the spaces in-between the
words are larger. I chose the font as it
links back to the font on the cover of
the magazine and also it is similar to
the one used in the existing product
which I am basing my work off. It also
looks very clean and abstract which
helps me achieve the style I am going
for.
10. Aesthetic QualitiesThe reason I decided to place
the text where I did is
because I wanted the text to
be the main feature of the
page. I think I achieved this
by making the color stand out
and it also has a slight sense
of perception as it is in front
of the background. I think the
font I have chose adds to the
fantasy aesthetics as a whole,
this is because the wavy
effect it has looks like some
sort of illusion and it has an
unnatural feel to it.
The reason I placed the
people where they are is
because I wanted them to
come second to the text. I
think I managed to achieve
that. The fact that I placed
myself behind one of the
words and in front of the
other shows the viewer that
layers exist and that the text
is brought forward. The
addition of one person being
behind the mushrooms helps
add the this more realistic
feel by adding more more
layers and realism.
The grey box in which the text is written in helps it stand out a bit more from the rest of the page.
I also added it as the background is black and I wanted all of my text to stay black except for
standout pieces such as the “Fashion warped” and the contents text on the previous page. I used
the same font as I did for the block of text on the other double page spread as I wanted to
continue having a theme throughout and it also lets the reader know that they will be reading
more about a similar subject. The reason I ha the hoodie on the right is once again as we read
right to left so I wanted it to be the last thing you see after reading about how it was
manufactured. I think the way only part of the hoodie stays on the grey box is good as it helps it
stand out more but it is not the first thing you see whilst looking at the page.
I decided to put the brands at
the top of the page as I wanted
it to be the first thing the
viewer saw. I believe that if
they see that first and have no
interest or interest in the
brands shown, they can decide
weather they want to read the
page. I added a gradient to the
X because it looks better than
it being plain and it matched
the colors of the ones on the
logos.
The text “fashion Warped” was
added to fill in a big blank
space in the center of the
page. I added the gradient for
the same reason as I did for
the X and I wanted it to match
something on the page. I chose
the font as I think it has a sci-fi
space feel to it and this also
adds to the unrealistic fantasy
feel of the whole magazine.
I wanted to place us on the
earth after I was playing
around with the perspective
tools. I thought it was a good
contrast from all the other
straight forward poses on the
other pages and it worked
well with the theme. I added
the astronaut as there was a
big space above the text and
something just needed to be
added to help fill it.
11. Audience Appeal
• I think I have appealed to the target audience quite well. My audience was 16+ mainly males who
were into fashion. The reason I think I have achieved this is because the text may be non
understandable for anyone too young and also the readers will have to want to read the
magazine because there is quite a lot to take in. I do think tat my audience would be more of a
smaller group instead of a large variety like some magazines although I do think that the people
who buy this magazine will buy them weekly or monthly etc. I think that the tone of my magazine
is quite serious which will also mean only older teenagers or adults will find it interesting. I did
not pick a social status but I think it may appeal to people with a bit of money as some of the
clothes and topics are more high end, although if you are just interested in the fashion
community I think it could still appeal to you.
• I think that it will appeal to men more as I only have male models and all of the clothes shown
and spoken about in the magazine are males clothes. I also think the magazine will be very
intriguing to a community of people called “Hypebeasts” as there is a lot of Supreme and Yeezy
etc. My aim was to attract a lot of Hypebeasts because that’s what I am interested in and I think I
could have achieved this.
• The fantasy theme helps with the appeal to a teenage audience as it is weird and new so people
want to see what is being said. In the fashion community, people want to hear what you have to
say and listen to you if your work or the way you portray it is different. That’s why I took a weird
fantasy approach to my magazine. For example, on the front cover where there are people fully
clothed in water. This is strange and not normally seen which makes people want to pick up and
read about why there are people stood in the water full clothed, and it makes people want to
listen to what you have to say and your outlook on fashion.
