2. Research
โข For my research I looked at three different magazines on a magazine website called
issuu.com. I looked at how they clearly advertised themselves to their target audience. I
looked at some similarities and differences between the magazines so I understood how to
layout my magazine and what worked well on a magazine cover and double page spread. I
feel as though this helped my project as it gave me a greater understanding of what a
magazine should include and how to make a magazine that would sell to my target audience.
โข I feel as though I could have looked at a few more magazines or at least a few more main
stream magazines so that I would have had a better understanding of what sells the best as a
magazine and what appeals more to the majority and general public. I think I could have
analysed the magazines I looked t a bit better by using arrows for each part of the magazine
so I knew I had covered everything and so it was clearer what I was talking about.
3. Planning
โข For my initial plans I started off with a mind map of different ideas I had for my magazine. I
mind mapped three different ideas, Nature, Music and Film. I feel this really help me decide
what was the best idea for my magazine as I could see what I would be able to write the most
about. I then went to make an individual mind map for m final magazine idea which was a
film magazine. Here I narrowed it down to specific things I wanted in my magazine and what
the double page spread was going to be about. I also made a mood board to help me see
what I wanted my magazine to look like and I feel this really helped my final product.
โข For my planning I also did some experiments where I made a practice cover and double page
spread so I had a rough idea of what my final product was going to look like. I feel this really
helped my production as I kept looking back at these for a guide on what I was doing. My
final product did stray from my plan but if gave me a good starting point.
โข For my pre-production I created a style sheet with film posters and magazines and a colour
board so I had a rough idea of the sorts of colours I was wanting to involve. I then planned
the layout of my final product with the pictures from the style sheet which hi feel helped my
production as I could look at this for a reference of what I was doing.
4. Time Management
โข I feel as though I managed my time very well in this project and everything ran very smoothly
and I finished my project on time and I feel as though I got it done to a good enough
standard. For my production I got all my pictures for my cover and double page spread in the
first few days of production so I did not have to worry about running out of time to get
pictures. Once I had all my picture I could just start making my magazine which at first I found
difficult but I eventually got used to the programs I was using and everything started to run
smoothly for my production and I got everything finished and exported for the hand in day.
โข If I had more time for my production then I eel my magazine could have been made to a
better standard and I would have spent more time on getting the pictures for my magazine as
I would not have had to rush this stage as much with more time.
5. Technical Qualities
โข Cover - When comparing my work to a professional film magazine I would say there are a few
similarities. For example the film that is the main subject of the magazine always covers majority of the
magazine cover and the title of the film is always clearly shown on the cover with the picture of the
actors. There are always cover lines linked to the main film and a few more linking to others that are
going to be talked about in the magazine. Some differences between my magazine and a professional
one would be that the mast head of the magazine isnโt cover on mine which is because my magazine
isn't an established brand that people know enough to know the name without all the letters being
clearly visible and the bar code being on the cover instead of being on the back pf the magazine.
โข Double Page โ When comparing my magazine to a professional magazine a similarity would be that they
both have pictures from moments in the film in the magazine when talking about the film and reviewing
it. A difference would be that the professional magazine has put its writing into more columns than I
have which makes it a bit more appealing to the eye than my magazine does. They have also spaced out
the writing so it doesnโt look like there is as much writing in their double page spread compared to
mine. I also feel as though I could have spread the
picture on my double page spread out more so that
they werenโt all on one side or have maybe added
one into the bottom left hand corner.
6. Aesthetic Qualities
โข I feel as though my magazine looks good for the time I had to make it and the skills I have in
Photoshop. I feel as though I was creative with my magazine and tried new things and
pushed myself when doing this project. I am really pleased with how the cover has come out
with the effect of someone being trapped in the screen and how the text looks like it is also
in the screen with him. I also feel as though the effects for the picture on the double page
spread have come out really well with the spiral in the actors eyes on the smaller picture on
the page on the right. I feel as though I could improve the layout of my double page spread
and spread the text out more so it doesnโt look so text heavy and as much to read for the
viewer but I am very happy with the layout on the pictures on the double page spread. I feel
as though I could have used more of the space on the cover to add more cover lines or I
could have just made the text bigger so it is easier to read from a distance for if it is on
shelves at a store.
7. Audience Appeal
โข I feel as though my product appeals to my target audience as it has a very similar layout and
design to professional magazines with the same target audience. The cover clearly shows
that the magazine is about film with the main picture on the cover and the cover lines show
this. I feel as though the blocky text on the cover will appeal to the audience as it is aimed at
an older audience so it doesnโt have to be super interesting to try and captivate someone like
a young child. I think I could have used more of the space on the cover and made the font of
the cover line text a bit more interesting as the font of this text is a bit too plain and would
grab the viewers attention at all.
