ABAKAS E C T I O N F R A N Ç A I S E
LUNDI 23 SEPTEMBRE 2013
Editorial écrit en anglais par
Edmond Y. Azadian et publié par
The Armenian Mirror-Spectator
voir. La dernière chance de détruire ce
pays repose sur les missiles
Tomahawk de l’US Navy, réunis
actuellement en Méditerranée orien-
tale.
Syrie. Avec la chute du gouvernement,
les Arméniens seront la première cible
des djihadistes qui assiègent Alep.
Glenn Beck - le plus répugnant des
commentateurs politiques – a diffusé

dix jours. Le Québec, écrit-il,
devrait imiter la petite république
pour apprendre à durer : « C’est un
pays exemplaire à bien des égards
pour les Québécois, notamment
parce que c’est l’un des plus
anciens du monde. »
Gilles Proulx parle du génocide
et ses conséquences « Ce qui reste
du pays se donne quand même le
droit d’exister. Voilà un bel exem-
ple pour nous. » Il cite également
la soviétisation de la république.
« Notre timide loi 101 fait pâle
figure à côté de l’alphabet armé-
nien… qui existe depuis environ
l’an 400. » « Non seulement les
Arméniens parlent leur langue et
ne se rabaissent pas à bilinguiser
tous leurs panneaux, mais ils
utilisent un ‘lettrage’ unique au
monde! »

turc d’origine kurde Yasar Kemal.
moyens pacifiques, a déclaré l’ex-
présidente de Lettonie, lors de ren-
contres à Bakou.
Vaira Vike-Freiberga a noté que
seule cette méthode devait être
privilégiée dans la situation,
ajoutant que les conflits entrainent
la dévastation, les décès et
les souffrances des personnes
vivant dans les pays touchés par la
confrontation.
« Les réfugiés et les personnes
déplacées ne peuvent pas revenir
chez eux durant des années », a-t-
elle ajouté.
L’ex-présidente lettonne semble
confiante : « En Lettonie, beau-

presse SIPA. Il a même reçu vers la fin de sa vie la Légion d’honneur de la
part de président Chirac.

Armenians from Turkey and around
the world have descended on
Akhtamar Island on Lake Van for an
annual Divine Liturgy on the island’s
10th-century church, which was
reopened to occasional prayer in 2010
after being closed for almost 100
years.
As reports Anadolu Agency, turkish
authorities restored the church
between 2005 and 2007 before opening
it as a museum. Divine Liturgy was cel-
ebrated there for the first time in 95
years in 2010. This year, a baptism
took place during the service in the
historical church.
The Divine Liturgy began at 11 a.m.
at the historic Surp Khatch (Holy
Cross) Church. The ceremony was
conducted by the Archbishop of the
Armenian Patriarchate in Turkey,
Aram Ateshian.
“During our religious service, we
will pray for our country’s peace, unity
and solidarity. There were no empty
seats at the service four years ago, but
as time passed, the number of atten-
dees decreased. Nearly a thousand
people have participated this year,
unlike previous years’ thousands. For
the first time in 100 years, we will have
a baptism inside the church. I would
like to take this occasion to thank our
governor, the security forces and the
mayor,” Ateshian said before the cere-
mony.
Worshippers prayed for peace in
the Middle East and in the world dur-
ing the service.
Some 800 security forces stood on
guard during the ceremony. Police
took tight security measures on and
around the island, while conducting a
bomb search with sniffer dogs and
police divers.

Why do Armenians gravitate away
from their native land and live in far-
away countries, overwhelmed with the
nostalgia of the ancestral homeland?
We seldom pose the question to our-
selves and when we do, we always
have cop-outs: we blame our neigh-
bors, curse our conquerors and decry
our enemies.
It is true, history has treated the
Armenian people very harshly, for a
number of reasons. As we try to enu-
merate or analyze those reasons, it
never occurs to us to assess our own
responsibility in shaping our destiny
as one of the oldest nations on the
planet. If one day we decide to delve
into our own responsibility, perhaps
we will begin to soberly plan our
future.
The reason Armenian have not been
able to become a dominant nation —
except during Tigranes II reign in the
first century BC — is our individual-
ism. Individualism denotes self-
reliance, self definition, independence
and all the other positive attributes.
But when contrasted with the col-
lective will, catastrophe ensues.
Because of various depravations,
victimizations and constant foreign
domination, Armenians have devel-
oped a very strong individualist trait,
which has always been in conflict with
collective discipline, nation-building
and focus on a common future. That is
how they have survived through all the
adversities of history.
During the dark ages, individualism
was suppressed especially through
religion, where eyes and hopes were
diverted away from the individual to
the sublime and to heaven, which reli-
gious leaders conveniently used to
consolidate their hegemony over their
subjects. It is no wonder that kings
and rulers claimed divine lineage to
legitimize their power over the mass-
es.
The lay rulers and the clergy used
and abused their absolute power over
people, suppressing any expression of
individual ideas.
The Inquisition in Europe punished
any deviation from the church doc-
trine harshly. People were denied
independent thinking, facing torture
and burning at the stake. The famous
victims of such intolerance were
Galileo and Giordano Bruno.
With the emergence of the
Renaissance, society’s focus shifted
towards the individual. And later,
fueled by the Industrial Revolution,
the individual came to control his or
her destiny and enjoy life’s blessings
without inhibitions.
Europe eventually came to balance
individualism versus collective will,
thus developing empires to control the
peoples and resources of other conti-
nents. As individuals negotiated the
limits of their freedoms with the
imperatives of national consensus,
powerful governments were formed,
without compromising individual lib-
erties. Nationalism became the glue to
hold together the individuals. The
French philosopher Voltaire became
the proponent of individual freedoms
within the parameters of collective
will. He encapsulated that concept
succinctly when he said,
“Your freedom ends where my nose
begins.”
Armenians pride themselves that
the Renaissance dawned in Armenia
before Europe. Gregory of Narek’s
poetry is considered a watershed in
that development. Indeed, the poet, in
his supplications to the Supreme
Power, dwells on the frailties of the
individual, imploring divine forgive-
ness or help. In the Book of Lamen-
tations, Gregory of Narek outlines
human desires and forbidden urges
within the confines of his prayers,
with a poetic craft unsurpassed for
many centuries.
This individualism in Armenia
always developed within the context
of foreign domination, which made the
survival of the individual questionable
most of the time. Every Armenian
developed his individualism at the
expense of his fellow Armenians,
always losing the collective perspec-
tive.
The contrast was stark during the
Ottoman years. As the majority of the
Armenians suffered in the provinces,
Amiras and the privileged class of
Armenians lived in affluence in
Constantinople and other urban cen-
ters. They served the Sultan, who
sometimes used them to exploit fellow
Armenians in the provinces by assign-
ing them tasks such as tax collection,
which was performed most of the time
with a whip crashing on the back of
the Armenian peasant, to please the
Sublime Porte.
The class of Armenian Amiras were
completely detached from the aspira-
tions of the Armenian masses living in
the hinterlands.
Today the Armenian Amiras are
remembered in Istanbul because they
were able to secure some favors from
the Sultan to build churches and
schools in Istanbul.
Individualism among the Armenians
sometimes is expressed in the form of
factionalism. Indeed, with a very

Obama Urges Azerbaijan for
Karabakh Conflict Resolution
YEREVAN (Arka) — U.S. president Barack Obama sent a letter to president
of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, which says, “ … On the occasion of his first official
visit to Baku, I would like to convey to you my full support for Ambassador
James Warlick as the new U.S. co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group. His recent
appointment is a strong signal of the United States’ enduring and unequivocal
commitment to helping the sides reach a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-
Karabakh conflict.
It is my hope that Ambassador Warlick’s wealth of diplomatic experience and
your government’s desire for progress will bring new energy to the co-chairman-
ship, and to the peace process. I support your efforts to take advantage of
opportunities for direct dialogue with Armenia in the months ahead, and to avail
yourself of the co-chair’s time and expertise to move beyond the current
impasse in negotiations. With the outlines of a compromise already well estab-
lished, now is the time for a renewed effort to bring peace to the region.”

Organizers of the renovations hope the advancements will facilitate mod-

games.
“If we manage to make the learning environment more attractive, we will
get the expected results within the shortest terms. Our nation’s unique
approach towards education should be targeted at preparing skilled profes-
sionals,” VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian said.

primitive concept of patriotism,
Armenian volunteers in the Russian
army refused to fight under General
Antranik, as the Russian army relin-
quished its conquests, heading home
and leaving the fortress of Kars
defenseless towards the end of World
War I. Food, ammunitions and cloth-
ing were abandoned, but the Armenian
volunteers refused to defend the
fortress of Kars, stating that Kars was
not part of their homeland and our
national hero left the front, despon-
dent.
After World War I, as Ataturk was
able to hold together a defeated coun-
try through diplomacy bordering on
hypocrisy, Armenians jeopardized
their first republic, created after six
centuries of foreign domination.
Granted, perhaps Armenia’s fate was
doomed as Ataturk and Lenin were
trying to outmatch each other, but our
perpetual infighting also contributed
to the demise of the First Republic. As
a result of the February uprising, tens
of thousands of young Armenians
killed each other on top of the 1.5 mil-
lion victims at the hands of the
Turks.
The Soviet era proved to be one of
the darkest chapters of human history.
It was as if the Catholic Inquisition
had returned with a vengeance, with
an atheistic twist. On top of the loss of
the entire leadership and intellectual
class of Western Armenians, a new
crop of literary talents fell victim to
Stalin’s atrocities.
The Soviet Union was a huge
prison. Personality and individualism
were sacrificed for the collective. The
new philosophy called for the creation
of the new man, the Soviet citizen.
Despite all adversities and casual-
ties, the Soviet system proved to be a
blessing in disguise for the Armenians.
Travel bans contributed to the devel-
opment of the demographics in
Armenia with immigration from the
Balkans and the Middle East. If only
forced attachment to land could keep
Armenians in the native homeland.
That stability in turn contributed to
the tremendous development of sci-
ence, literature and music, beginning
a new golden age in Armenian histo-
ry.
Today, all that was created during
the Soviet era is being blown to four
winds and Armenians are leaving their
country at a rapid pace.
Azeris are waiting at the gate and
they have already concocted a history
that Armenians are sitting on Azeri
land.
If this time around we lose the sec-
ond republic, that will be the historic
price we pay for Armenian individua-
lism.
Buenos Aires Youth Meets Turkish
PM With Protest
The Armenian Youth Union of Buenos Aires organized Sunday a protest
action against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to the coun-
try. According to the Turkish Radikal, a crowd of 500 people gathered outside
the Hilton hotel which was to select the capital of the 2020 World Olympics.
The protesters held posters with the portraits of Erdogan and Mustafa Kemal
Ataturk (the Ottoman Turkish military leader who was among the key organizers
of the Armenian Genocide), as well as the photos of Hrant Dink (the assassinat-
ed editor of the Turkish-Armenia weekly Agos), and Mehmet Ayvaliotashi (the
activist killed in Turkey during the Gezi Park protests) in an attempt to prove
that Turkey is not a safe country to host the Olympic event.
It emerged later that the honor to hold the Olympic Games was granted to
Japan’s capital, Tokyo.
A 3,000 year old bronze ring, in the
shape of a heart, has been unearthed
in Karabakh, reports Russian blogger
Mazzoni Guide, who visited Artsakh
this summer. Describing the heart-
shaped ornament – which appears to
have been worn as a necklace – the
blogger says, “This is a three thousand
year old piece of jewelry. Today, the
heart shape is ubiquitous, used as a
symbol of love: on clothing, in pic-
tures, and text messaging. But people
have been using this symbol for ages.
Looking at this ring, one must imagine
that this is the first heart-shaped orna-
ment on the planet; and it’s probable
that even then, this ornament symbo-
lized love.”
Danish delegation visits Karabakh
YEREVAN — On Septem-
ber 9, Minister of Foreign
Affairs of the Nagorno-
Karabakh Republic, Karen
Mirzoyan, received a delega-
tion of Danish members of
parliament and journalists
who were in Stepanakert on a
visit.
The Foreign Minister wel-
comed the members of the
delegation and stressed the
importance of such visits in
establishing and strengthening ties between the two states.
Karen Mirzoyan noted that direct contacts with political figures and represen-
tatives of the media form a truthful and objective picture of Karabakh and the
political and economical processes taking place there.
During the meeting Karen Mirzoyan briefed the guests on the current stage of
the settlement process of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Karabakh and
answered the questions concerning prospects of conflict resolution, regional
developments and international recognition of Karabakh.
Orogen reports further gold
discovery in Armenia
YEREVAN - British mining
company Orogen Gold has con-
firmed a new gold discovery at
its operations in Mutsk, Armenia,
following assay results that
revealed substantially higher
gold grades than previously
reported.
“These results confirm Mutsk
as an exciting new gold disco-
very at shallow depths within an
established epithermal district,”
said CEO Ed Slowey in a state-
ment. “Assays from the Orogen
confirmatory holes at Mutsk, as well as re-assays of the previous holes have
exceeded our expectations for the project. While further work is needed to fully
understand the controls on mineralization, we are particularly encouraged by
the high grades and widths encountered in several of the holes and the apparent-
ly large strike extent of the system,” he added.
Orogen moves into phase two of the program to earn an 80% interest in the
property. The company will spend a total of US $2.5 million by the end of August
2016.
