10. I have chosen to take the
images I need for Klashed
at this location. I have
chosen this location
because it is not outside
which risks road danger
and it is perfect lighting
for the images I need to
take.

11. Publicising Job Roles
The publisher of my
magazine will be Bauer
media, because of this I
have made an example of
what the magazine’s career
page could look like on
Bauer media group’s
website.
I included the colour
scheme of the magazine
across the whole page
including a yellow tint for
the picture above the job
advertisement. This
establishes a brand identity
across the whole page up to
the masthead used below
the previously mentioned
image.

14. Draft Article Inspiration
Inspiration for my DPS questions
The style of questions in my DPS
are inspired by those of Kerrang!’s
DPS. In Kerrang!’s DPS irregular
language is used and appears to be
casual. This is because rock stars
have an “I don’t care” appearance
and this rough language conveys
that.
I was inspired by Kerrang’s DPS to
ask about how old the artist was
and if that had affected their
career, the Kerrang DPS asks a
similar question about their young
age.
15. Draft Article/Interview
Interview
Popular artist ‘Fingoflame’ also known as David Armitage has recently released his album ‘Don’t let the flame go out’. ‘Don’t let the flame go out’
burnt 10 million copies into its fans’ hearts. The 17 year old rock artist has made a name for himself ever since he started recording music and
releasing it to his neighbourhood. It wasn’t long until he was discovered through popular media site ‘Youtube’ which he still claims today was his
“Guardian angel”. Fingoflame can be found in the Klashed charts with his second album ever made. As a new magazine, Fingoflame has given us
the luxury of hosting his first ever interview to be featured in a magazine. The young artist has brought something new to the rock genre and has
the full support of some of the biggest rock artists to exist. He is an inspirational character and is here exclusively for you.
The editor of Klashed magazine Tom Hibbert had the pleasure of meeting the modern rock artist.
TH: Thank you for taking the time to be interviewed today, I can honestly say that we are as nervous as you are so hopefully this first interview
for both of us will be one to remember.
FF: No problem, I always make time for fans and giving back to the audience as they’re the ones who made me who I am today.
TH: So you really appreciate your fans then?
FF: Oh yeah, of course! Not enough people in this industry give credit to those who got them to where they are today and I for one am not one
of those people.
TH: “Not one of those people”. One of the people who discredit their fans, or not someone who got you to where you are now?
FF: Both to be honest, my past was always daunting and still hangs over me to this day like one of those cartoon clouds.
[Both chuckle]
TH: Well I can see that you are just as nice as the rumour has it. Anyway, back to the album. The single you released and is featured on the album
called ‘love like a matchstick’. Is it just me or is the album very fire based [chuckles]
FF: [Smirks] It is because that’s how I depict love like fire, deadly, heated and has to end.
TH: Is this based on past experience?
FF: [Doesn’t answer but looks at the floor]
TH: Never the less it is a great song and you really must have spent a long and difficult time on the song.
FF: [Lifting his head] The difficult part is putting yourself in the song and picturing the lyrics as your life and then singing them as you would feel
in that position.
TH: That’s a really emotional and powerful method. Well that’s all we time for but thanks for being here with us
[Handshake]
Pull Quote
I am going to include a pull quote on the DPS because it will give a preview of the
emotional thing that Fingoflame has said. This should persuade the reader to read
the DPS inteview to find a reason behind this.
17. Magazine Masthead/Logo
Insomnia Font
Broken Stick Font
Font
These are all quite ‘edgy’ font styles which are similar to Kerrang!. I have narrowed my font style
down to similar ones to Kerrang! because they will battle the competition with Kerrang well.
The connotations of Klashed resemble musical sounds as does Kerrang!’s masthead, I chose
Klashed because this way it will keep up with Kerrang!’s competitive audience that will be
battling Klashed.
Broken Glass Font
18. Magazine Fonts/Colours
Font
I used the font “insomnia” from www.dafont.com this was copyright free. The font style was
free to download and once downloaded I could use this font in Photoshop as I would with a
default font, this meant that choosing and using the font style of my choice would be easy
and not waste time with methods around the problem of not being able to use it for my
masthead.
Colour Scheme
I have chosen to use this colour scheme because it reflects different types of rock music.
The dark purple is associated with Rock Pop. The purple symbolises brightness and pop and the
dark element in the purple always refers to rock which is known for being dark.
I have chosen black because it represents pure rock and the yellow colour to show modernised
rock.
20. Front Cover Plans
My front cover is similar and
can be related to Kerrang’s
as there are elements that
can be found on both
magazine pages.
Barcode
The barcodes for both magazines
are in the same place. They both
contain the price, web address and
two bars.
Headline
The main headline and Kerrang’s main
headline are positioned in the middle and
both got mild shadow effects.
Other articles
The other articles that
are going to be featured
in both magazines are
written in a list. I chose
to do this on my
magazine because I liked
how straight forward it
was to inform the
audience of the content
before they have started
to read the magazine.
21. Final Front Cover analysed
Masthead
The final masthead dis on the front cover and
positioned in the typical place where they are
usually found on other magazines.
Barcode
The barcode includes code and conventions
such as social media link, date of issue, issue
number and the price. This has all been
repeated (Steve Neale 1980) from my
magazine of inspiration kerrang.
Technical Convergence
By having a social media promotion on the
front page it means that the reader will be
able to follow the magazine and the artist on a
social network site that they are likely to be
on.
Puff Promotion
Located at the footer of my magazine are free posters that are
supplied within the magazine for consumers who purchase the issue
that they are present in.
22. Feedback on Front Cover
• 1) Strapline - "The UK’s NO 1 Independent Rock music"
- INCOMPLETE - This MUST be exactly in line with the
Masthead as well!
• 2) Puff/Promotion - Text is too near the edge of the
page - Use the ruler tool more effectively Tom
• 3) Twitter promotion -
•
• i) Nearer to the main headline
• ii) Clearer font style needed - avoid stroke effects etc.
•
• 4) '6" (Bottom of the page) - white OR magazine Yellow
stroke effect needed - CLEARER
• 5) Main Headline - Clearer font style needed - difficult
to read...
23. Changes
Feedback on Pitch
6) Barcode features - Too much "dead space"
inside the background shape - make things
bigger but make sure VERYTHING is lined up
correctly and neatly
7) Barcode - Social media links for the
magazine are MISSING - Key!
The front cover on
the left has a
barcode with missing
conventions and a
lot of dead space. As
one of my
corrections I had to
remove the dead
space. I did this by
making the bar code
bigger and made the
text and masthead
larger to take up
more space.
24. Step by Step creating magazine pages
The first stage in creating my magazine’s
front cover was to first form a masthead
that displayed my magazine’s name and
remained within the colour scheme and
font style I defined in my pre production
materials.
I create masthead and positioned it in
the centre of the page on Photoshop.
Next, I needed a background for the front
cover so that it was not just a plain white
background which showed no originality
at all. I chose a crumpled piece of paper
as the background, I chose this because it
was crumpled which suggested rough, in
formal and edge. This fitted in well with
my magazine’s genre and the theme I
planned to demonstrate on the page.
I positioned the paper on the page to a
canvas size of 21x29.7 cm.
The third step for the front cover and for Klashed itself
was to acquire a strapline that outlined the reason
behind Klashed and what it would stand as in amongst
the competition. I chose to use the strapline “The UK’s
NO 1 Independent Rock Music”, this not only showed
the music that was featured in the magazine but
directly outlined what the magazine stood as.
I followed magazine convention and positioned the
strapline in my colour scheme and directly under the
masthead.
25. Step by Step creating magazine pages
The biggest task for the front cover was clearly
the artist’s photograph. I use the quick selection
tool to highlight the person and I then inversed
the selection to select everything but the artist.
This enabled me to then remove the background
and leave just the artist on the stage. I then
copied the image to my front cover file and
positioned him underneath the masthead and
centred.
Puff promotion is a big thing to have in
a magazine as it can be what makes or
breaks the motivation level of a
consumer. Without having it on the
front cover I was risking the vitality of
the magazine in my target readership. I
decided to add the promotional
advertisement at the bottom of the
page in the style of a photo strip that
would show the posters that were free
with the magazine.
I added the articles to the left hand side of the
page to fill the dead space that was left between
the artist’s guitar and the masthead.
26. Step by Step creating magazine pages
To make sure that my audience knew about the
promotional goods that were available at their
purchase of the magazine I added a prizes
sticker at the top. This ensured the awareness
of the consumers for the poster prizes.
The next thing to add was the
barcode. This contained all the
conventions required to make Klashed
valid and to ensure the conventions
were covered for the consumers and
customers.
At this point the front cover was nearly
finished and I needed to add a headline that
would draw the reader in.
27. Step by Step creating magazine pages
‘Fingoflame’ was not the only artist covered in
Klashed, the readers needed to be able to
know this from just the front cover, I added a
banner at the top of the page that would
display all the artists in the magazine.
The readership also needed to have a
social media relationship with the
artist to increase the vitality. I
advertised the social media profile
that could be followed by fans of the
main artist in the issue.
29. DPS Step by Step
I started my DPS with the black background and the
masthead. I did this to establish brand identity and
to keep to the colour scheme with a black
background as planed in my pre production.
Next, I added the footers for each page which would
contain the page number and the web address for Klashed’s
website. By including the web address it would help
technical convergence with the magazine.
Next I added the pull quote from the
interview. This is key because the pull
quote entices the reader to read the
whole interview in hope that it is as
gripping and entertaining as the preview
of it in the pull quote.
30. Next I added the drop capital that would start my
magazine’s DPS article and interview. The drop
capital is important to have on the DPS because it
grabs the reader’s attention because they add
personality and strength to the article.
I added a picture of the artist’s guitar to the DPS to add
personalisation to the artist’s image.
After adding the image of the guitar I then
decided to add the image of the artist. At this
point the DPS had all of its images on it and was
ready for the article.
DPS Step by Step
31. I added a watch the full interview
promotion, this drew more attention to the
Klashed website which furthers the
magazine’s publicity.
I added an ‘exclusive’ promotion
for the interview at the top to
serve as a USP. The interview and
draft article were in the magazine
and the DPS was complete.
DPS Step by Step
32. DPS
Artist Photo
The artist’s photo shows the
emotion on his faces which
draws the reader in to try
and find out why they are
posing in a traumatic sense.
Drop Capital
The drop capital is in the main focused
colour in the magazine’s colour scheme,
this shows consistency which gives the
magazine an overall professional
appearance for a rock magazine.
Pull Quote
The pull quote for the Klashed DPS is meant to attract
the readers attention and encourage them to feel
empathy for the artist.
33. Changes
1) Guitar - Better selection needed - VERY
rough around the edges.....
Feedback on DPS
11) Include the word "Exclusive" below the
KLASHED logo at the top of the page - fill some
space
Differentiated Q's and A's - INCONSISTENT
The magazine page on the left is very
basic and had a lot of dead space. To fill
this dead space I added an image of a
guitar but the selection was not correct
so as feedback I correct the selection.
The questions were not all differentiated
so I had to make it clear what were the
questions and the answers.
34. Safe working practices - Colour
Eye Dropper Tool
This is evidence of me using the
eye dropper tool, I used the eye
dropper tool to establish a
brand identity throughout the
DPS.
I added the colour that I
collected with the eye dropper
to my swatches to make sure I
didn’t compromise the brand
identity.
35. Safe working practices – Pen Tool
This is evidence of me using
the pen tool to ensure that
the text would wrap around
the drop capital perfectly and
give a professional finish to
the way the article was being
presented.
For accuracy purposes I used
the ruler tool (cmd R and to
hide it once finished I used
cmd H) so that I could make
the DPS look neater and more
accurate.
Pen Tool
36. Safe working practices – Quick Selection
This is evidence of me using the quick selection tool. I used the quick selection tool to
remove the background from the image of the artist so that I could then place the artist on
the front cover of my magazine. I did this by selecting the artist and inverting it to remove
the whole background as a pose to individually selecting parts of the image.
Quick Selection Tool
37. Safe working practices – Layers
When creating my magazine pages naming the layer
sis key. By naming the layers it means that I can use
time effectively in knowing which image or text is
on which layer so I do not waste time going through
all the layers to find one aspect of the page.
Linking particular layers is important because I will
be able to move whole aspects of the magazine
page together as a pose to one layer at a time, for
example I needed 6 images of fan art to advertise as
puff promotion and was trying to create a photo
strip layout with them, I linked the layers to ensure
that they would all move together so there was a
consistent placing for the photo strip.
Grouping layers is also an important thing to do
when creating my magazine because this helps
organise the page meaning that you know where
each layer is and what each folder contains in terms
of parts of the magazine page being created.
38. Safe Working Practices - Swatches
There are 3 main colours in my colour scheme, a gold
shade of yellow, black and white. The only colour I
needed to add to swatches was the yellow, I named it
‘KLASHED Colour Scheme 1’. To add it to swatches I
needed to use the eye dropper tool to sample the colour
so that I could then add it to swatches.
The advantage to doing this is that it will make sure I use
the same colour every time to establish a brand identity.
39. Risk Assessment
Quick Selection Tool
I used the quick selection
tool to highlight the artist
and to then remove all
of the background so that I
could place the artist on the
front cover without any unnecessary
content.
Shape Tool
I used the shape tool to
create boxes in which the
other headlines and
articles would be.
Type Tool
This tool in particular was
important in creating the
pages for Klashed as a lot of
text was needed on the
front cover, including the
masthead.
Eraser Tool
This was used to
straighten out
mistakes made if
there were issues
with other tools.
Eye dropper tool
I used this tool to keep a consistent colour
scheme which would establish a brand
identity
40. Social Media Site
I have created a Klashed
magazine page on both
Twitter and Facebook, this
is important because more
than one billion people are
active on facebook and
Twitter have 307 million
people using twitter each
month. This is a large
population of potential
customers and to create a
page on Twitter and
Facebook means that
those people will have a
high chance of seeign the
Klashed page.
41. Conclusion
This learning outcome focused on producing materials needed in
order to get Klashed in production. I created a production plan that
included jobs and duties with deadlines for each day of the
magazine’s creation. This would help keep the Klashed team
organised and on track to finalising and finishing the magazine’s
first issue.
I also had to put together a plan of where the images were going to
be taken and how. This contained information such as where they
would be taken and the equipment needed to take these said
images. This ensured that all time was spent efficiently without
wasting time on gathering sources and equipment without an idea
of what to look for.
The main part of a magazine is financing it which is not always easy.
In the budgeting section I needed to outline concisely what would
need funding and how much. This included everything from office
space to equipment. The advantage to predicting and estimating
these costs is that it gives us a rough idea of the profit/loss of the
magazine.
I also included in this LO hand drawn drafts, step by steps and the
planning of Klashed’s logo.
