4. Magazine Final
Market Position: My magazine will be a new magazine, which will
be launched in competition with other popular rock magazines.
Target Demographic: The target audience for my magazine is
predominately men aged 45+ as classic rock is a genre targeted
more at the older generation as is mainly older bands. The readers
of my magazine would be people in jobs who can afford to buy a
magazine and people looking for a little more excitement in their
lives, perhaps hankering after their lost youth.
Competition: My magazine will be in competition with Mojo
magazine as Mojo magazine is one of the most popular rock
magazines in the UK along with Kerrang magazine, therefore my
magazine is going to aspire to be as good as if not better than
either of those magazines.
Also, as my magazine is inspired by Mojo magazine there will a lot
of similarities between the two therefore there will be natural
competition between the magazines.
Masthead: The final Design for my Masthead is this bold black and
white font of which I found on Dafont.com, I chose this font as it is
simple and Similar to Mojo magazines Masthead however Mojo’s is
slightly more basic.

5. Magazine House Style
What is my magazine?
My magazine is going to be a rock magazine, the
purpose of my magazine is to inform people of
upcoming gigs and concerts, artists, latest songs,
interviews etc.
My magazine is inspired by Mojo magazine therefore
will have similarities to that magazine such as font
styles, layouts and formats.
The genre of my magazine will be established to the
reader as there will be rock themed images on and in
the magazine as well as rock related information.
The color scheme of my magazine is going to be
mainly Black, white and red which are colors featured
frequently in rock related objects.
Similarities to Mojo magazine will be shown as my
magazine will have a “free CD!” promotion in the top
left corner, Barcode situated in the bottom right
corner, the masthead will be centered at the top of
the page with the strapline overlapping it, just like
Mojo magazine.

It has also helped me
experiment with different fonts
and colours so that I can see
which will best suit my
magazine.

9. Double page spread Interview
• Interview – Siouxsie's e Sioux
• Having just released the new box set of Banshees B-Sides, Downside Up, we managed to catch with
their legendary front woman after her ‘Siouxsie’s Dream Show’ performance at London’s Royal
Festival Hall in October.
• [b]MM: Let’s begin by talking about what happened that night at the Royal Festival Hall? what
made You stormed off and called the venue organizers “silly fuckers”?[/b]
• SIOUXSIE: well, basically before we had agreed to do the shows at the Royal Festival Hall, I said the
only thing I want and I don’t care about champagne backstage or anything else, the one thing I
needed to specify is that I cannot have any Arctic drafts on stage. When I sing I open up and if I get
Arctic drafts it kills my performance. And on stage that’s what was happening, despite them being
told what I wanted.
• [b]And you walked off?[/b]
And described the Royal Festival Hall as “a dump”. Haha!
• [b]Budgie couldn’t have jumped over his drum kit fast enough when he ran after you. Did you two
argue backstage?[/b]
Oh no, he stuck by me all along. He was rooting for me. He said he was glad I did that he went 'I'm
freezing my fucking balls off as well”.
• [b]It was a very punk rock situation.[/b]
It was, although they created it that way not me.What they should have done from the start was
block off that draft. This wouldn’t have happened if that had done that one simple thing.
• [b]theres a big punk retrospective exhibition on in London right now. Does it bother you that the
nostalgia industry has now grown around punk?[/b]
10. It seem s to happen every year "It's 25 years!” “It’s 26 years!” In my opinion people keep going back to Punk
because it’s something that can’t be repeated. They want to make the next big thing that’s going to shake
everything up but it’s too self-conscious. People don’t understand that when punk started it was innocent and
not a phenomenon and that’s where everyone goes wrong. You can’t consciously create something important,
it’s a combination of chemistry, conditions, the environment, everything and it’s not something you can
orchestrate. It’s a freak of nature and I love stuff like that.
[MM]You were definitely the centre of attention at the London punk scene. Are you still in touch with any of
the others from that original crowd?
Yeah, I’ve seen Steve Jones .He actually said, he wished those early Pistols shows before they blew up when the
media was being filmed. He’s right, because not many people had seen the early shows and they’re what
turned everyone who saw them around, not when the spotlight from Bill Grundy and all that happened. To see
people actually trying to stay as far away from the front of the stage as possible. They were incredible.
11. Magazine House Style

Every issue of MM magazine
will have the same masthead,

12. Layout
MM magazine has a layout which
surrounds the image in the centre of
the magazine cover, this makes the
magazine look professional as well as
making the image stand out.
13. Images
All the images used in MM magazine, are photos of models. This means that they have posed for the
shot and dressed purposely for the magazine cover. They will have certain clothes or makeup
specifically for the shot.
20. Denotations and Connotations
On my front cover I have included the colours red, black, grey, blue, and white.
Black
Denotation: the denotation of the word Black is simply the colour of this text. ‘Black’
means this colour. The denotations of words help to communicate ideas, descriptions and
points of view clearly.
Connotation: The connotations of the word ‘Black’ are much more interesting than just
the colour of this test. Black suggests the ideas of death, mourning, loss, sadness, darkness,
fear etc.
Red
Denotation: the denotation of the word red is the colour used in some of the text on my
front cover.
Connotations: the connotations of the word ‘red’ suggest blood, anger, love, power, fire
etc.
Grey
Denotation: the denotation for the word grey in this case is the some of the text used on
the front cover of my magazine.
Connotations: the connotations of the colour ‘grey’ suggests sadness, depression,
loneliness and isolation but this changes when you add other colours.
Blue
Denotation: The denotation of the word Blue is the colour of some of the text on the front
cover of my magazine.
Connotations: there are different connotations depending on the shade of blue, in this
case I have used light and dark blue.
Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquillity, understanding, and softness. Dark
blue represents the knowledge, power, integrity and seriousness.
White
Denotation: the denotation of the word white is the colour of text used on the front cover
of my double page spread.
Connotation: light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity, it is considered to be the
colour of perfection.
21. Target Audience
‘Katz’ Theory
Looking at the Katz’ theory I have established
that the Target audience for my magazine
would be relying on the magazine for
entertainment and information.
MM Magazine is a fairly simple magazine so
isn’t going to give the audience an
information overload but simply give them
the information that they are expecting to
find in a classic rock magazine such as this.
The information expected from this magazine
is related to the rock genre, and informs the
audience about gigs and concerts as well as
artists from that subgenre etc.
22. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow wanted to Understand what Motivates People, He understood
that people possess motivation unrelated to rewards or unconscious
desires.
From looking at Maslow's Theory, I have come to the conclusion that
out of the 5 stages of needs , Biological and Physiological needs,
Safety needs, Love and belongingness, Esteem needs, Self-
Actualization that the category that most suits MM magazines target
audience is the Biological and Physiological needs category as the
stereotype of someone linked to classic rock is someone who enjoys
sex, drugs and of course rock. Which suggests that they aren’t very
motivated characters.
Hartley’s seven subjectivities
1) Age – Typically the target audience for MM magazine would be middle aged as Classic rock has some songs containing lyrics which
wouldn’t be suitable for younger people.
2) Gender – Stereotypically the targeted gender for MM magazine is male as the majority of the artists are male and very masculine
almost animal like behaviour which wouldn’t appeal to women.
3) Class – MM magazines target audience class is lower class as the way classic rock artists act and dress makes them appear almost
poor as they have a scruffy appearance which would be frowned upon by higher class people.
4) Ethnicity – As the Genre of MM magazine is classic rock the target audience for the magazine stereotypically would be white as
classic rock artists are mainly white.
5) Self-Image –The self-Image of MM magazines target audience is stereotypically scruffy or as some would describe them with no
“fashion Sense” which could link in with the stereotype of them being lower class meaning they cannot afford the nicest of
clothing.
6) Nation – MM magazine is only sold in the UK therefore is targeted at UK citizens and also shows Artists mainly from the UK.
7) Family – I personally think that the family member my magazine would be targeted at would be an uncle so someone who
hasn’t got children of their own therefore hasn’t got much responsibility.
23. Psychographics
Mainstreamers Seek security. Tend to be domestic
conformist, conventional, sentimental –
favour value for money family brands. The
largest group.
Aspirers Seek status. Materialistic, acquisitive,
orientated to image and appearance,
personal and fashion. Typically younger
people.
Succeeders Seek control. Strong goals, confidence, work
ethic and organisation. Typically higher
management and professionals.
Resigned Seeks survival. Rigid and authoritarian
values interested in past and tradition.
Typically order people.
Explorers Seeks discovery. Energy, individualism and
experience. Values difference and adventure.
Typically a younger demographic (students).
Strugglers Seeks escape. Alienated and disorganised.
Few resources beyond physical skills. Buys
alcohol, junk food, lottery tickets. Typically
lower demographics.
Reformers Seeks enlightenment. Freedom of
restrictions and personal growth. Social
awareness and independent judgement.
Anti-materialistic but aware of good taste.
Due to the stereotype of
classic rock artists which is
someone who’s time is mainly
occupied by sex, drugs and
rock I would categorise the
target audience for my
magazine as strugglers
because of their confusion of
priority and lack of
responsibility.
People whom are involved
with drugs usually have had
some issues in there lives
which has made them seek
escape in the drugs/alcohol.
And as those associated with
classic rock are stereotyped
as drug lovers I think that
strugglers is the category
most suitable.
24. Socio-Economic needs
MM magazines socio-economic needs meet
E, D, and possibly C2 as the stereotype of
those whom listen to the magazines genre
of classic rock are people whom enjoy sex,
drugs and rock which suggests the audience
is lazy and irresponsible implying that they
are possibly teenagers and/or unemployed,
and if employed it would be a semi-skilled,
unskilled job or in some cases skilled
manual workers.

25. How does the Magazine appeal to the reader
according to these Theories?
From looking at these Theories I understand that my magazine
appeals to the reader as it contains information on classic rock
artists lives which can act as inspiration towards the target
audience as some classic rock fans like to try and copy classic
rock artists lifestyles such as the whole sex, drugs, alcohol and
rock. My magazine also contains lists of songs by that genre
which will be appealing to the target audience as they can find
out what songs have just been released and discover new
favourites.
MM magazine also features interviews with artists which may
appeal to the reader as they can find out the artists own
opinions on their songs and a little more detail about there
lives…
It also often gives away a free CD which will appeal to the
reader as I have discovered from these theories that the target
audience is lower class and wont have the money to be buying
cd’s on a regular basis, also this magazine informs readers on
gigs, concerts, and festivals.
29. Step-by-step front cover
The first step when creating the Front cover was to analyse what is typically found on
the front cover of a typical music magazine, of which I chose ‘Mojo’.
We needed to understand what needed to be included on the front cover on a front
cover of a magazine and appropriate placing for certain elements, and the appropriate
sizing etc.

30. Secondly we had to sketch a plan of what the front cover was going to look like, from
looking at other magazines. I did two different sketches, so that I could have a variety of
ideas to choose from.

31. After the sketches, we then began to create our front covers in Photoshop. We
referred to our chosen magazine for inspiration and used our sketches to decide
where everything should go.

32. Before the front cover could be
classed as finished we had to get
feedback on anything that needed
improving, then begin to make
changes from there.
Once we had received that feedback
we could begin to make
improvements on our magazine front
covers, until they were at the right
standard.

33. Step-by-step Double page spread
The first step when creating
the Double page spread was
to analyse what is typically
found on the double page
spread of a typical music
magazine, of which I chose
‘Mojo’.
We needed to understand
what needed to be included
on a double page spread of a
magazine and appropriate
placing for certain elements,
and the appropriate sizing
etc.
We then had to follow the
same steps we used for the
front cover.
34. Conclusion
• In conclusion I have created a Rock magazine, inspired by one
of the best selling rock magazines on the market. I based this
particular issue on Siouxie Sioux and therefore used some of
her album covers and other merchandise as inspiration for the
colour scheme in my magazine. For the contents of my
magazine I have used all the information I discovered rock
fans would look for in a magazine, including concert, gig, and
festival information, information on the artists etc.
• I have tried to include everything rock fans would look for in a
rock magazine and took the best features from each of the
best selling rock magazines to create the overall best
magazine including everything rock fans should ever need.
35. How software/technology is used to
produce the magazine pages
Firstly I set the black canvas to A4 which was the size I
wanted my magazine to be, using ruler lines to ensure that
everything was correctly placed, and in proportion.
(Ctrl + R ) to add in the ruler lines, Once everything is to
scale or you simply wish to remove the ruler lines click
(Ctrl + H ).
I then made the background colour white as there were
already a lot of dark features in the photograph itself.
Before adding the masthead and other conventions I
imported the photo and erased everything around the
model herself using the select tool & eraser tool.
To smooth out the edges I used the airbrush tool.
I then began to add the other conventions such as the
barcode, dates, price etc.
36. For my barcode I found the barcode I wanted, and
saved it. In Photoshop I then selected ‘file’ + ‘Place’ to
place the image on the page and then dragged it to the
preferred location.
I then used the ‘T’ tool to type the issue date, number
and price of the magazine above the barcode.
I also imported an image to represent a CD Cover, again
using ‘file’ ‘place’.
Finally for the Puff Promotion I used the shape tool and
experimented with different effects on the sidebar,
finishing off with text ‘Free CD’.
