These mastheads would be suitable as they all
have quite gloomy and dark connotations. The
mastheads also have a flashing connotation when
picturing a ‘Bang’, ‘Boom’ or a ‘Strike’. The
masthead would make the reader symbolise my
magazine with fire, bright colours and
destruction. This would suit this magazine idea
because this would match the colour scheme.

because they are quite dark
colours which most rock
magazines have.

DPS Step by Step
1. The first stage was to
choose a background that
would fit with the theme
of the genre and the
colour scheme of the
magazine. I chose to go
with a plain black canvas.
2. The next thing that I
needed to add was the
website address and the
page numbers. I used a
red box to put them in so
that you could read them
and the box was red as
part of my colour scheme.
3. After taking a picture of the
person who would be imitating
the rock artist I removed there
background and placed them in
the DPS.
4. I added the drop capital
(coloured red to show brand
identity) to the top left corner so
I could add the interview around
the image.

5. After the article was in
place surrounding the
artist, I added the rest of
the interview.
6. I then added the pull
quote into the space
made with the pen tool on
the last column of the
interview.
7. The name of the artist was
‘BlueyFire’, and this needed to be
shown more than just the initials ‘BF’
in the interview. I used the same
font and made the font red with a
black stroke effect to draw attention
to it.
8. Next I added the BOOM logo
to show brand identity, this
would also convey organisation
to the readership.

Market Position
The magazine I will be
making is a new product
launched into a
competitive market of the
rock music sub-genre.
Competition
The competition for my magazine is Kerrang! magazine. Kerrang! magazine is my
competition as it is the market leader for the rock music genre. Kerrang! magazine will
have a similar style and format as well as both magazines’ content being based around
the same sub-genre.
Masthead
This is my final design for my masthead. I
have chosen this font and style as it is
similar to Kerrang! magazine’s which will
help my magazine to compete with its
competitor Kerrang!.
Target Demographic
The target demographic for my
magazine will be 16-25 and
mostly mixed gender because of
the colour scheme which
connotes that black is more
focused on Male gender and
Purple is more of a female
colour, Yellow connotes appeal
to both genders. The
demographic will also have
socio-economic needs such as a
participation in a civil society.
The spending power of the
demographic will also be limited
which works with my price range
to set for the magazine.

Magazine-House Style
In Kerrang! magazine, each and every issue
has the barcode in the bottom corner of the
right hand side with the price shown
below/above. This connotes consistency in
the magazine which appeals to readers of a
professional demographic. I will replicate this
when creating my front cover by using
Kerrang’s barcode as my convention’s
inspiration.
Kerrang! has a very interesting colour scheme
because they have three specific colours they
use throughout the magazine but have a
different three colours each issue. This shows
originality which creates appeal in the reader
and target audience.
My magazine of inspiration ‘Kerrang’, uses
three consistent font styles, one for the
masthead, the headlines and a more elegant
style of font type for the double page spread.
I am going to use a similar house style for
Klashed but use the colour scheme yellow,
black and purple. This will help to establish a
brand identity across all issues as it is
consisting of bold colours.

These are photos that I tested the
camera and shot type with. The
images shown are inspired by
Kerrang! magazine front covers in
past issues.
I am not going to use the photos but
will however use the same shot
type, camera position and posture of
the person portraying a rockstar.

These are all quite ‘edgy’ font styles which are similar to Kerrang!. I have narrowed my font style
down to similar ones to Kerrang! because they will battle the competition with Kerrang! well.

These mastheads all have similar connotations to
sound within a rock band with the idea that they
sound like what they are. The mastheads have loud
and destructive connotations which take the idea of
the sub genre rock further with emphasis on the
stereotypical loud and craziness to rock music.
“Klashed” connotes two things together which is
what reflects my magazine’s content of two type of
rock music together in one magazine.

I have chosen to use this colour scheme
because it reflects different types of rock
music.
The dark purple is associated with Rock Pop.
The purple symbolises brightness and pop and
the dark element in the purple always refers to
rock which is known for being dark.
I have chosen black because it represents pure
rock and the yellow colour to show
modernised rock.

Double Page Spread Article
Popular artist ‘Fingoflame’ also known as David Armitage has recently released his album ‘Don’t let the flame go out’. ‘Don’t let the
flame go out’ burnt 10 million copies into its fans’ hearts. The 17 year old rock artist has made a name for himself ever since he
started recording music and releasing it to his neighbourhood. It wasn’t long until he was discovered through popular media site
‘Youtube’ which he still claims today was his “Guardian angel”. Fingoflame can be found in the Klashed charts with his second
album ever made. As a new magazine, Fingoflame has given us the luxury of hosting his first ever interview to be featured in a
magazine. The young artist has brought something new to the rock genre and has the full support of some of the biggest rock
artists to exist. He is an inspirational character and is here exclusively for you.
The editor of Klashed magazine Tom Hibbert had the pleasure of meeting the modern rock artist.
TH: Thank you for taking the time to be interviewed today, I can honestly say that we are as nervous as you are so hopefully this
first interview for both of us will be one to remember.
FF: No problem, I always make time for fans and giving back to the audience as they’re the ones who made me who I am today.
TH: So you really appreciate your fans then?
FF: Oh yeah, of course! Not enough people in this industry give credit to those who got them to where they are today and I for one
am not one of those people.
TH: “Not one of those people”. One of the people who discredit their fans, or not someone who got you to where you are now?
FF: Both to be honest, my past was always daunting and still hangs over me to this day like one of those cartoon clouds.
[Both chuckle]
TH: Well I can see that you are just as nice as the rumour has it. Anyway, back to the album. The single you released and is featured
on the album called ‘love like a matchstick’. Is it just me or is the album very fire based [chuckles]
FF: [Smirks] It is because that’s how I depict love like fire, deadly, heated and has to end.
TH: Is this based on past experience?
FF: [Doesn’t answer but looks at the floor]
TH: Never the less it is a great song and you really must have spent a long and difficult time on the song.
FF: [Lifting his head] The difficult part is putting yourself in the song and picturing the lyrics as your life and then singing them as
you would feel in that position.
TH: That’s a really emotional and powerful method. Well that’s all we time for but thanks for being here with us
[Handshake]
Final Masthead
Frequency
The magazine will be released once on a by
monthly basis. This is so the readership is kept up to
date on the rock music genre and has read the
magazine throughout the year to a suitable extent. I
did not allocate Klashed magazine a weekly release
because if the magazine was seen too much by
readership then they might get bored with the
content and find it repetitive, where as with a
monthly release they will have seen what is new
each month in rock music and not just a change in
aesthetics each week.
Step by Step creating magazine pages
(Front cover)
The first stage in creating my magazine’s
front cover was to first form a masthead
that displayed my magazine’s name and
remained within the colour scheme and
font style I defined in my pre production
materials.
I create masthead and positioned it in
the centre of the page on Photoshop.
Next, I needed a background for the front
cover so that it was not just a plain white
background which showed no originality
at all. I chose a crumpled piece of paper
as the background, I chose this because it
was crumpled which suggested rough, in
formal and edge. This fitted in well with
my magazine’s genre and the theme I
planned to demonstrate on the page.
I positioned the paper on the page to a
canvas size of 21x29.7 cm.
The third step for the front cover and for Klashed itself
was to acquire a strapline that outlined the reason
behind Klashed and what it would stand as in amongst
the competition. I chose to use the strapline “The UK’s
NO 1 Independent Rock Music”, this not only showed
the music that was featured in the magazine but
directly outlined what the magazine stood as.
I followed magazine convention and positioned the
strapline in my colour scheme and directly under the
masthead.

The biggest task for the front cover was clearly
the artist’s photograph. I use the quick selection
tool to highlight the person and I then inversed
the selection to select everything but the artist.
This enabled me to then remove the background
and leave just the artist on the stage. I then
copied the image to my front cover file and
positioned him underneath the masthead and
centred.
Puff promotion is a big thing to have in
a magazine as it can be what makes or
breaks the motivation level of a
consumer. Without having it on the
front cover I was risking the vitality of
the magazine in my target readership. I
decided to add the promotional
advertisement at the bottom of the
page in the style of a photo strip that
would show the posters that were free
with the magazine.
I added the articles to the left hand side of the
page to fill the dead space that was left between
the artist’s guitar and the masthead.

To make sure that my audience knew about the
promotional goods that were available at their
purchase of the magazine I added a prizes
sticker at the top. This ensured the awareness
of the consumers for the poster prizes.
The next thing to add was the
barcode. This contained all the
conventions required to make Klashed
valid and to ensure the conventions
were covered for the consumers and
customers.
At this point the front cover was nearly
finished and I needed to add a headline that
would draw the reader in.

‘Fingoflame’ was not the only artist covered in
Klashed, the readers needed to be able to
know this from just the front cover, I added a
banner at the top of the page that would
display all the artists in the magazine.
The readership also needed to have a
social media relationship with the
artist to increase the vitality. I
advertised the social media profile
that could be followed by fans of the
main artist in the issue.

DPS Step by Step
I started my DPS with the black background and the
masthead. I did this to establish brand identity and
to keep to the colour scheme with a black
background as planed in my pre production.
Next, I added the footers for each page which would
contain the page number and the web address for Klashed’s
website. By including the web address it would help
technical convergence with the magazine.
Next I added the pull quote from the
interview. This is key because the pull
quote entices the reader to read the
whole interview in hope that it is as
gripping and entertaining as the preview
of it in the pull quote.
Next I added the drop capital that would start my
magazine’s DPS article and interview. The drop
capital is important to have on the DPS because it
grabs the reader’s attention because they add
personality and strength to the article.
I added a picture of the artist’s guitar to the DPS to add
personalisation to the artist’s image.
After adding the image of the guitar I then
decided to add the image of the artist. At this
point the DPS had all of its images on it and was
ready for the article.
DPS Step by Step
I added a watch the full interview
promotion, this drew more attention to the
Klashed website which furthers the
magazine’s publicity.
I added an ‘exclusive’ promotion
for the interview at the top to
serve as a USP. The interview and
draft article were in the magazine
and the DPS was complete.

Conclusion
My final magazine idea
that I am continuing with
is Klashed. This is because
it will be more profitable
and is planned out
thoroughly. Klashed is a
modern rock magazine
and is aimed at young
adults and late teenagers,
the modern colour
scheme and language
used will convey this and
appeal to the target age
directly.

Mind Map Magazine Idea Two Bangtime Font Strike Font Boom Box Font Font Masthead Possible Masthead Names • Bang • Boom • Strike These mastheads would be suitable as they all have quite gloomy and dark connotations. The mastheads also have a flashing connotation when picturing a ‘Bang’, ‘Boom’ or a ‘Strike’. The masthead would make the reader symbolise my magazine with fire, bright colours and destruction. This would suit this magazine idea because this would match the colour scheme. Colour Scheme This colour scheme would be suitable or the magazine because they are quite dark colours which most rock magazines have. Images to be Taken • Makeup- Gothic • Clothing-Dark, ripped, gothic • Hair-Spikey/Coloured • Facial Expressions-Anger
  • 14. DPS Step by Step 1. The first stage was to choose a background that would fit with the theme of the genre and the colour scheme of the magazine. I chose to go with a plain black canvas. 2. The next thing that I needed to add was the website address and the page numbers. I used a red box to put them in so that you could read them and the box was red as part of my colour scheme. 3. After taking a picture of the person who would be imitating the rock artist I removed there background and placed them in the DPS. 4. I added the drop capital (coloured red to show brand identity) to the top left corner so I could add the interview around the image.
  • 15. DPS Step by Step 5. After the article was in place surrounding the artist, I added the rest of the interview. 6. I then added the pull quote into the space made with the pen tool on the last column of the interview. 7. The name of the artist was ‘BlueyFire’, and this needed to be shown more than just the initials ‘BF’ in the interview. I used the same font and made the font red with a black stroke effect to draw attention to it. 8. Next I added the BOOM logo to show brand identity, this would also convey organisation to the readership.

  • 20. Magazine-Final Market Position The magazine I will be making is a new product launched into a competitive market of the rock music sub-genre. Competition The competition for my magazine is Kerrang! magazine. Kerrang! magazine is my competition as it is the market leader for the rock music genre. Kerrang! magazine will have a similar style and format as well as both magazines’ content being based around the same sub-genre. Masthead This is my final design for my masthead. I have chosen this font and style as it is similar to Kerrang! magazine’s which will help my magazine to compete with its competitor Kerrang!. Target Demographic The target demographic for my magazine will be 16-25 and mostly mixed gender because of the colour scheme which connotes that black is more focused on Male gender and Purple is more of a female colour, Yellow connotes appeal to both genders. The demographic will also have socio-economic needs such as a participation in a civil society. The spending power of the demographic will also be limited which works with my price range to set for the magazine.
  • 22. Magazine-House Style In Kerrang! magazine, each and every issue has the barcode in the bottom corner of the right hand side with the price shown below/above. This connotes consistency in the magazine which appeals to readers of a professional demographic. I will replicate this when creating my front cover by using Kerrang’s barcode as my convention’s inspiration. Kerrang! has a very interesting colour scheme because they have three specific colours they use throughout the magazine but have a different three colours each issue. This shows originality which creates appeal in the reader and target audience. My magazine of inspiration ‘Kerrang’, uses three consistent font styles, one for the masthead, the headlines and a more elegant style of font type for the double page spread. I am going to use a similar house style for Klashed but use the colour scheme yellow, black and purple. This will help to establish a brand identity across all issues as it is consisting of bold colours.
  • 23. Test Photography These are photos that I tested the camera and shot type with. The images shown are inspired by Kerrang! magazine front covers in past issues. I am not going to use the photos but will however use the same shot type, camera position and posture of the person portraying a rockstar.

  • 26. Font Style Insomnia Font Broken Stick Font Font These are all quite ‘edgy’ font styles which are similar to Kerrang!. I have narrowed my font style down to similar ones to Kerrang! because they will battle the competition with Kerrang! well. Broken Glass Font
  • 27. Mind Map Masthead Possible Masthead Names • Crash • Loud • Klashed These mastheads all have similar connotations to sound within a rock band with the idea that they sound like what they are. The mastheads have loud and destructive connotations which take the idea of the sub genre rock further with emphasis on the stereotypical loud and craziness to rock music. “Klashed” connotes two things together which is what reflects my magazine’s content of two type of rock music together in one magazine. Colour Scheme Magazine Idea One This colour scheme would be suitable for my magazine as well because the colours contrast with each other and suggest controversy that some rock music also suggests.   • 28. Colour Scheme/House Style Colour Scheme I have chosen to use this colour scheme because it reflects different types of rock music. The dark purple is associated with Rock Pop. The purple symbolises brightness and pop and the dark element in the purple always refers to rock which is known for being dark. I have chosen black because it represents pure rock and the yellow colour to show modernised rock.

Double Page Spread Article Popular artist ‘Fingoflame’ also known as David Armitage has recently released his album ‘Don’t let the flame go out’. ‘Don’t let the flame go out’ burnt 10 million copies into its fans’ hearts. The 17 year old rock artist has made a name for himself ever since he started recording music and releasing it to his neighbourhood. It wasn’t long until he was discovered through popular media site ‘Youtube’ which he still claims today was his “Guardian angel”. Fingoflame can be found in the Klashed charts with his second album ever made. As a new magazine, Fingoflame has given us the luxury of hosting his first ever interview to be featured in a magazine. The young artist has brought something new to the rock genre and has the full support of some of the biggest rock artists to exist. He is an inspirational character and is here exclusively for you. The editor of Klashed magazine Tom Hibbert had the pleasure of meeting the modern rock artist. TH: Thank you for taking the time to be interviewed today, I can honestly say that we are as nervous as you are so hopefully this first interview for both of us will be one to remember. FF: No problem, I always make time for fans and giving back to the audience as they’re the ones who made me who I am today. TH: So you really appreciate your fans then? FF: Oh yeah, of course! Not enough people in this industry give credit to those who got them to where they are today and I for one am not one of those people. TH: “Not one of those people”. One of the people who discredit their fans, or not someone who got you to where you are now? FF: Both to be honest, my past was always daunting and still hangs over me to this day like one of those cartoon clouds. [Both chuckle] TH: Well I can see that you are just as nice as the rumour has it. Anyway, back to the album. The single you released and is featured on the album called ‘love like a matchstick’. Is it just me or is the album very fire based [chuckles] FF: [Smirks] It is because that’s how I depict love like fire, deadly, heated and has to end. TH: Is this based on past experience? FF: [Doesn’t answer but looks at the floor] TH: Never the less it is a great song and you really must have spent a long and difficult time on the song. FF: [Lifting his head] The difficult part is putting yourself in the song and picturing the lyrics as your life and then singing them as you would feel in that position. TH: That’s a really emotional and powerful method. Well that’s all we time for but thanks for being here with us [Handshake]
  • 33. Frequency The magazine will be released once on a by monthly basis. This is so the readership is kept up to date on the rock music genre and has read the magazine throughout the year to a suitable extent. I did not allocate Klashed magazine a weekly release because if the magazine was seen too much by readership then they might get bored with the content and find it repetitive, where as with a monthly release they will have seen what is new each month in rock music and not just a change in aesthetics each week.

Step by Step creating magazine pages (Front cover) The first stage in creating my magazine’s front cover was to first form a masthead that displayed my magazine’s name and remained within the colour scheme and font style I defined in my pre production materials. I create masthead and positioned it in the centre of the page on Photoshop. Next, I needed a background for the front cover so that it was not just a plain white background which showed no originality at all. I chose a crumpled piece of paper as the background, I chose this because it was crumpled which suggested rough, in formal and edge. This fitted in well with my magazine’s genre and the theme I planned to demonstrate on the page. I positioned the paper on the page to a canvas size of 21x29.7 cm. The third step for the front cover and for Klashed itself was to acquire a strapline that outlined the reason behind Klashed and what it would stand as in amongst the competition. I chose to use the strapline “The UK’s NO 1 Independent Rock Music”, this not only showed the music that was featured in the magazine but directly outlined what the magazine stood as. I followed magazine convention and positioned the strapline in my colour scheme and directly under the masthead.
  • 35. Step by Step creating magazine pages (Front cover) The biggest task for the front cover was clearly the artist’s photograph. I use the quick selection tool to highlight the person and I then inversed the selection to select everything but the artist. This enabled me to then remove the background and leave just the artist on the stage. I then copied the image to my front cover file and positioned him underneath the masthead and centred. Puff promotion is a big thing to have in a magazine as it can be what makes or breaks the motivation level of a consumer. Without having it on the front cover I was risking the vitality of the magazine in my target readership. I decided to add the promotional advertisement at the bottom of the page in the style of a photo strip that would show the posters that were free with the magazine. I added the articles to the left hand side of the page to fill the dead space that was left between the artist’s guitar and the masthead.
  • 36. Step by Step creating magazine pages To make sure that my audience knew about the promotional goods that were available at their purchase of the magazine I added a prizes sticker at the top. This ensured the awareness of the consumers for the poster prizes. The next thing to add was the barcode. This contained all the conventions required to make Klashed valid and to ensure the conventions were covered for the consumers and customers. At this point the front cover was nearly finished and I needed to add a headline that would draw the reader in.

Step by Step creating magazine pages ‘Fingoflame’ was not the only artist covered in Klashed, the readers needed to be able to know this from just the front cover, I added a banner at the top of the page that would display all the artists in the magazine. The readership also needed to have a social media relationship with the artist to increase the vitality. I advertised the social media profile that could be followed by fans of the main artist in the issue.
  • 40. DPS Step by Step I started my DPS with the black background and the masthead. I did this to establish brand identity and to keep to the colour scheme with a black background as planed in my pre production. Next, I added the footers for each page which would contain the page number and the web address for Klashed’s website. By including the web address it would help technical convergence with the magazine. Next I added the pull quote from the interview. This is key because the pull quote entices the reader to read the whole interview in hope that it is as gripping and entertaining as the preview of it in the pull quote.
  • 41. Next I added the drop capital that would start my magazine’s DPS article and interview. The drop capital is important to have on the DPS because it grabs the reader’s attention because they add personality and strength to the article. I added a picture of the artist’s guitar to the DPS to add personalisation to the artist’s image. After adding the image of the guitar I then decided to add the image of the artist. At this point the DPS had all of its images on it and was ready for the article. DPS Step by Step
  • 42. I added a watch the full interview promotion, this drew more attention to the Klashed website which furthers the magazine’s publicity. I added an ‘exclusive’ promotion for the interview at the top to serve as a USP. The interview and draft article were in the magazine and the DPS was complete. DPS Step by Step
  • 43. Conclusion My final magazine idea that I am continuing with is Klashed. This is because it will be more profitable and is planned out thoroughly. Klashed is a modern rock magazine and is aimed at young adults and late teenagers, the modern colour scheme and language used will convey this and appeal to the target age directly.
