2. Unit 13 – Planning and Pitching a Print based Media Product - Proposal
Format: Magazine
I am going to produce a new rock/ alternative music magazine and will make a front cover and a
double page spread to promote EP magazine and use these as examples when showing how I will
present and layout my magazine, for example the size which will be A4 (8”X11”).
Working Title:
My working title is EP but this may change and this is part of a music terminology and so people
could be aware in what it means but it wouldn’t be directly used in the same way. The house
style will be simple so it is easier for the reader and the colours will be black, white and red to
carry on the simplicity but with the sections of red it will add more of an effect.
Genre:
The sub-genre of my magazine is rock and alternative and my magazine will compete with the
likes of Q, Kerrang! and NME because magazines such as Q have a rock and alternative genre.
Content:
EP magazine will be full of images, interviews, cover stories, album/ singles and concert reviews.
The publication will also feature bands/ artists that are generally quite well known in the rock
genre.
Style or Approach:
The denotation of the colour scheme for the magazine front cover will be simple because it will
mainly be black and white but with certain conventions red to have more of an effect on the front
cover and so the important conventions such as the masthead will draw more attention.
The colour red with white font was chosen for the masthead because the white writing will stand
out against the red background and if the rest of the front cover is dark colours, people will be
able to recognise the magazine quicker.
The colour red can connote to anger and rock can have connotations of anger as well so the
colour red will link to the genre of the magazine.
I am going to use Adobe Photoshop CS5 to construct the magazine pages (Front Cover and
Double Page Spread) because it is a good software for inserting/editing images and text in the
right places and making the magazine look professional.
Some of the tools in Adobe Photoshop CS5 that will be particularly beneficial in constructing the
front cover because you can edit the image(s) on to the front cover and move them around and
being able to decide what conventions will be in front of the other, e.g. the main image in front of
the masthead. As for the double page spread, it will be useful to edit in small details such as the
page number/ logo/ issue date/ web address and other conventions for example any specific
quotes from the interview.
Audience:
The age range will be from 15 years of age to 30 because it is stereotypically known that the
younger generation like rock music more although some may be older or possibly younger.
Furthermore, the gender is more likely to be male than female as other rock magazines have
more of male readers. As for socioeconomic needs, they will mainly be ABC1 and the rest would
be C2 and E because not all students and young adults may be employed or not have a high
positioned job. Steriotypically, the ethnicity of my magazine would appeal to white people but I
would add information which could appeal to a diverse group.
Length:
I intened to produce 30 pages including the front and back cover and it’ll be an A4 size (about
8”X11”) because you can include a lot of content on 28 pages and not many peole would
probably want to carry around a magazine if it is any bigger than A4.
Frequency:
EP magazine will be issued on a monthy basis so it can include more information and not every
band/ artist will be releasing singles or albums and going on tour all the time. Also my magazine
will be £2.99 which is cheaper than (for example) Q magazine which is sold at £3.99 so people
may prefer to spend less on a maagaizne as well.
Treatment:
After starting to make my front cover, I need to edit the images so that it’ll look more
