5. The three main veins used are:
• Cephalic Vein: Located in the upper forearm
and thumb side of the hand
6. • Basilic Vein: Located at the bottom of the
forearm and little finger side of the hand
7. • Median cubital vein, which connects the
basilic and cephalic veins in the antecubital
fossa (elbow flexion) and is the vein of choice
8. PROCEDURE
• Record patient data Name , Age , Sex, type
analysis , date .
• Assigning a code, the same to be placed in the
tube at the time of extraction
9. • Explain to the patient the procedure
• Hyperextend the arm so that the hand is
lower than the elbow
• Verify that the puncture site is intact and away
from sources of infection
10. • The tourniquet is placed above the elbow
from 5-10 cm, ask the patient to make a fist .
Select carefully the vein by palpation
• Immobilize the selected vein by placing the
thumb under the puncture area and tighten
the skin, disinfect the chosen area with
alcohol swab , let dry outdoors
11. • Break the safety seal and insert the needle
with a twist in the receptacle at the top. With
the bevel up puncture the skin with a smooth
and fast motion at a 45º angle. The upper wall
of the vein must be punctured and the bevel
must be inside the vein.
12. • When the needle is secured connect the first
tube when the blood begins to flow the
tourniquet is released .
• If using a vacuum system fit on the end tube,
the blood fills immediately up to the vacuum
exhaust pipe .
13. • Anticoagulant tube must be homogenized
gently while the tube without coagulant is left
in the rack without homogenization.
• Once finished, withdraw the needle with a
quick and gentle movement and apply
pressure on the area with an alcohol swab
• Put a bandaid on puncture site.
