Prompt management of blood spills to stop infectious
agents spreading from the environment to people.
 Breaking of lab sample while handling and
transportation.
 Excessive bleeding during any procedure.
 To prevent infection.
Spillages of blood/body fluids must be cleaned up as
soon as possible.
1. Isolate the area.
2. Always wear gloves and other personal protective
equipment as required.
3. Pour 1% sodium hypochlorite solution over the
spillage.
4. Cover the area with appropriate absorbent like, news
paper, tissue paper , cotton ,gamjee pad.
5. Wait for 10-15 minutes for complete absorption.
6. Clean up spill using paper and discard the material in a
yellow bag.
7. Ensure the area is thoroughly cleaned with the soap
and detergent.
