Volvox is a genus of green algae that forms spherical colonies of up to 50,000 cells. Each cell possesses two flagella and chloroplasts. The cells are attached to each other and move the colony through flagellar movement. Volvox reproduces both asexually through cell division and sexually through the fusion of egg and sperm cells. It is a model organism for studying the evolution of multicellular organisms from unicellular ancestors.
