5. The United Nations is an intergovernmental
organization whose stated aims include promoting and
facilitating cooperation in international law, international
security, economic development, social progress, human
rights, civil rights, civil liberties, political
freedoms, democracy, and the achievement of
lasting world peace.
The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace
the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries,
and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple
subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.

assistance branch of the United Nations, and it is the
world's largest humanitarian organization
addressing hunger. WFP provides food, on average, to
90 million people per year, 58 million of whom are
children. From its headquarters in Rome and more

to help people who are unable to produce or obtain
enough food for themselves and their families. It is a
member of the United Nations Development
Group and part of its Executive Committee.

Programme headquartered in New York City, that provides
long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance
to children and mothers in developing countries. It is one
of the members of the United Nations Development
Group and its Executive Committee. UNICEF was created
by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11,
1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to
children in countries that had been devastated by World
War II.

joining in October 1945. In 1953, the chief delegate of
India at the time, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was elected
the first woman President of the UN General
Assembly. India has a permanent mission to the UN,

April 16, 2013.

between 1987 and 1990 as Indian Peace Keeping Force.
In November 1988, India also helped restore the
government of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in
the Maldives under Operation Cactus.
