Academic History
At GCSE level one of the courses I took was drama and this has helped me prepare for
the chosen course at university because during GCSE drama not only was it
performing but we had to learn certain camera angles and we also learnt key aspects
of mise en scene and wee had to write an essay about in preparation for the exam.
When learning about this I decided that I preferred working behind the camera
because there was so many roles that were involved and it made me realise that this
is an area I am interested in and would like to study further. Before going onto the
course I am currently studying I did AS Level and I two of those were film and media in
which I got both C’s, these subjects played a key part in why I am choosing to continue
this subject onto university. During film we went into further detail about the different
camera shots and we learnt about different editing techniques and wrote multiple
essays about mise en scene within a chosen scene. We also watched multiple films for
example we watched Casablanca and had to write in accordance to the question
which was usually about camera angles or mise en scene, we also watched Pan’s
Labyrinth where we wrote about different connotations and the colours used.
Additionally in media we learnt about different platforms such as video games and
print, these two courses have played a key part in helping me chose what course I
want to continue with at university because they have helped me understand the
theory aspect of the industry
Current Study
I am currently doing a course Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and
Technology, this course has helped me chose what to study at university because it has
allowed me to gain the practical skills that I will need for the course I am interested in.
During the first year of this course I have made products in many different platforms
for example I have made a music video, magazine, video game and an audio story.
Working on the music video allowed me to work in video and I used Adobe Premier
Pro which is something I really enjoyed, I used different skills such as masking which is
where I made certain steps change colour and the rest of the video was black and
white, during the print project I had the opportunity to experiment with Photoshop
and InDesign however I preferred working in video. Additionally I enjoyed working
with the video games because it is something I never worked in before and I enjoyed it
because it is similar to video however I worked in Photoshop. Lastly the audio project
gave me the chance to work in Adobe Audition and I had never worked in audio before
this project, I enjoyed it because I liked being able to add all the sound effects however
something I struggled with was not being able to ‘see’ any progress I had to hear it and
this is something I struggled with because I prefer to work visually. Throughout the
first year I have learned many useful skills and paired with the theory that I learnt
during AS Level it has helped me realise that this is something I want to continue to
university
The Future
In the future I want to be working in the film industry because I really enjoy working in
video and I plan to apply to courses that include film production and most of these
courses offer similar modules and some of these seem really interesting because it
focuses on the practical side of things and some course offer you to specialise in a
certain area during the second and third year and this is something that appeals to me
because it allows for specialist teaching and this would help me in the future.
Additionally University offers work placements which is something that is very useful
for the future because it gives me the opportunity to see what it is like working in the
industry, and it also gives me the chance to network which is something that is
important in this particular industry because it gives me the opportunity to meet new
people and also with the work experience hopefully secure a job placement for after
university. Most universities will offer the opportunity to study abroad and this is
something that I really want to do because you get to network with people from all
over the world and studying abroad will also give me the chance to learn different
things and will also give me the experience of being independent in a different
country which is a key life skill and will help for the future
Outside College
Outside of college I have a part time job waitressing at a local restaurant, this doesn’t
have any connections to the field I want to work in however it does give me different
skills for example I get to be apart of a team and learn teamwork which is an incredibly
important skill for the film industry because you work with many different people and
it is important to respect everyone and work well with everyone you work with to
achieve the best. Additionally it gives me the opportunity to interact with customers
and this is important because I will be working with clients in the future and it is
important to be approachable and be able to work well with people and listen to
them. During secondary school I did work experience at Helmsley art centre for a week
and during this I had to create a poster to advertise a performance I also had to work
with children and assist with their drama class. We also went up to Kirkbymoorside
school and helped teach the kids for their performance, and then continued to go to
Welburn School where we taught the kids different dances etc. Work experience
helped me see what it is like working for clients because we had to listen to the
teachers at the different school and work with what they wanted the kids to do.
Currently I have been asked to do a project for a company that works with vulnerable
people and they have asked me to create a video and a print project so this is
something that I will be doing shortly. These make me a better candidate for
university because I have had the opportunity to work in a professional setting that
includes key skills such as teamwork and leadership.
Conclusion
In conclusion I want to go to university because it allows me to progress further in the
industry because it will give me the opportunity to learn new things and improve what
I already know. It will also give me the opportunity to meet new people and network
as well as find a work placement to gain new experiences. Going to university will help
me achieve becoming better at what I want to do and it will help me progress and
learn new skills and techniques. I am a good candidate for university because it is
something I really want to do and therefore I am enthusiastic about it additionally I
have the theory skills to back up the practical skills which is something that is useful
for university courses because a lot of them also include writing essays
Introduction
I am interested in doing a film practice course, or something along the lines of film
production/ media production. I have chosen these subjects because it is an area that I
want to work in in the future, I also enjoy working in video and this is why I have
chosen the film industry. I want to go to university because it will help me progress
further into the industry and gain new skills, as well as develop the ones I already
have. I believe that going to university is the best option for what I want to do in the
future because it will allow me to learn about the industry because I will be doing work
experience and this will also give me the opportunity to network and meet new people
as well as gaining important skills.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 Delete as appropriate. If you have not sat any resits, been at college last year or in FE education in previous years you can delete this slide.
  • #20 Write a short paragraph about subjects you’ve already studied at school/college that have helped prepare you for your chosen courses at University- level 2 or GCSE level. What did you make? What skills did you learn? Why did this make you want to progress on and study further etc.
  • #21 Talk about this course- Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology. Reference how it has helped you prepare for your chosen courses at University. What did you make? What skills did you learn? Why did this make you want to progress on and study further etc. Reference specific projects and software/hardware that you are familiar with.
  • #22 What do you want to do in the future (ensure it is related to the subjects you are applying for). How will university help you to achieve that?
  • #23 What do you do outside college? Any hobbies, part time jobs, client work, volunteer work? How does this make you a better candidate for university study?
  • #24 Summarise why you want to go to university. What will it help you achieve? Why are you a good candidate? Keep it short and to the point.
  • #25 Brief introduction referencing what subject/s (keep general if necessary) you are applying for and briefly why you want to go to university.
