Introduction
I’ve loved films since I was just a kid and this became apparent to me when I started
secondary school and mentioned films to my friends on a regular basis that they had
never even heard of. Growing up I loved creating my own stories usually in comic form
and I had always thought that films could only be made by Hollywood directors but as
soon as my friend showed me that he could film and edit using apps on his phone I
realised that even with poor quality I could make short films. I’ve only had the
opportunity to create my own films for the past couple of years and I’ve really enjoyed
the process so far. I find filmmaking so interesting as it allows me to tell my own
stories in my own style which I can change through editing. .I want to take a
filmmaking course at university as it would help me meet people with a similar
passion of film as well as helping me to get a stronger understanding of how I can
achieve my full potential as a filmmaker.
Academic History
• In my GCSE drama class I realised that I was more interested in the creating a
performance rather than the acting as I enjoyed developing the aesthetics and
story of our performances. I learnt a lot of terminology for acting during my time
which gave me a greater understanding of how to direct my actors when filming as
it gave me an understanding of what my actors would need be thinking of to get
the best performance out of them. In drama I learnt more about the importance of
planning for performances which I found useful when planning for my projects in
college. In my creative media diploma at college I’ve learnt to develop my skills in
planning by explaining all the aesthetic and practical choices I will make in project.
College has also given me a greater opportunity to work better filming equipment
which meant I could improve the quality of my projects.
Current Study
• Studying creative media has helped me to develop my planning skills, as I've had
to work on several projects in various forms of media such as film, animation and
magazine. This has been important for me, as it's helped me to realise the effort
that I can put into each stage of my project to make it as efficient as possible.
Working in various forms of media has also shown me that I'm much better at
coming up with film based concepts as it's more familiar to me so I find it easier to
work on.
The Future
• I hope to one day work in the film industry as a director as this has always
been a role that's interested me mainly due to most films being the director's
vision however I know this is a difficult role to achieve which is why I think a
film production course would help me improve upon the necessary skills and
experience needed for the job. I think that a filmmaking course would also
allow me to gain experience in various roles so I would have the opportunity
to discover if any other roles suit me better.
Outside College
• I volunteered at the Sue Ryder charity shop in York for about a year from when I was 15 until
I was 16 as I needed to complete 6 months over volunteer work in order to complete part of
my bronze Duke of Edenborough award. Although I only worked there for an hour each week
I continued to do so even after I completed my Duke of Edenborough award as it improved
my confidence in working as part of a team and speaking to customers so by the time I
finished volunteering there I felt more ready to be in a working environment.
• I currently work at the Range in York where I have grown to work as efficiently in a team as I
am on my own. I often have to handle problems that the customers may have which hasn’t
been to much of an issue for me as it’s always been fairly simple to find effective solutions to
their problems and if I can’t help them there are times when I have called managers or
supervisors so they can help me. I’ve always tried my best when at work to provide the best
customer service I can by treating customers with the same respect that I’d want to be
treated with.
• For about two years me and a couple of my friends have been watching as many horror films
as possible from new releases to classic horror anytime we’re free to meet and we’ve made a
list of the films we’ve watched and ranked them. I think watching films like this has been
important for me as it has allowed me to get a great view of the tropes and styles used in
horror which is useful when thinking of films I could make in this genre.
Conclusion
• I am enthusiastic and passionate about my goals as a filmmaker. I want to take
every opportunity available to become the best I can in this field of work as I am
always looking for new knowledge and ways to improve my skills.
