A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Combining still and moving images, advanced academic study and practical skills development, the BA in Visual
Arts and Film at Durham is a programme like no other. It draws on staff research spanning historical periods
from classical Rome to the present, and is almost global in its geographical reach, with an emphasis not only on
Western art, film, and visual culture, but that of the Middle East, Russophone Eurasia, and East Asia. The very
conceptions of the visual and the image students will explore in the programme are fundamentally shaped by
this transnational perspective. With this transnational scope in mind, the programme offers extensive language-
learning opportunities, while within Durham it draws on the outstanding collections of the University’s Oriental
Museum, its distinguished Western Art collections, and the curatorial expertise of its staff. No previous study of
art is required: just a desire to explore the vast world of visual art and film.

Course Content
This exciting degree course offers the opportunity to study English literature alongside
the complementary subject of multimedia journalism. You will take a range of core and
option units from the English degree while also looking at the skills required by modern-
day journalists. No longer is journalism just about investigative news reporting and
writing. Today's journalists are expected to have the skills to work successfully in
broadcast, print and online and this course will look at all these requirements. The
journalism units are led by accomplished journalists including current and former
reporters and editors from the fields of newspapers, magazines, websites, radio and
sport. This is a course for outgoing students with a keen sense of the joys of
interdisciplinary working and a desire to broaden the future occupational horizons by
exploring a range of approaches to textual production, with the critical and cultural
reception and impact.

27. Academic History
0 In high school I studied IMedia. This gave me the basic knowledge of premiere pro
which helped a lot in my first year of college as it primarily focused on editing
magazines. I decided in year 10 that I really liked the media industry and wanted to
develop my skills in that area.
0 Whilst studying IMedia I learnt mostly about the production of making films,
websites and short animations. From learning these skills I wanted to see what I
could do with even more knowledge on the subject, so to do this I applied for creative
media at york college.
0 I hope to develop my skills further on this course and hopefully get into university
0 I first realised I had an interest in media from watching different styles of films and
always wondering what goes into making a good film. I decided that I wanted to be a
part of that. I started making short films with my friends whilst in high school. I think
doing this helped me feel a lot more comfortable both in front and behind the
camera. My interest started to develop when I chose iMedia as a GCSE. This course
really made me feel like I was studying something that could have a big impact in my
life, as well as others. Now, when watching TV shows or films, I unintentionally find
myself analysing the different camera angles and shots. I am aiming to challenge
myself and develop my skills more through my client project for the Wildlife Trust
and in my large end of year project.
28. Current Study
0 The skills I have learnt for this specific region was when it came to how
to set up an interview shot, as well as the background of the shot.
0 After my GCSEs I wanted to learn more about the process of making a
film, so I applied to York College in hope of developing my skills further
on their L3 Media Production course. The skills I have learnt whilst at
college have primarily been focused on Premiere Pro and Photoshop. In
the first year, I learnt a lot about how the different editing software
packages work. I learnt these skills through the set tasks I had such as
making an info-graphic, advergame and a tv advert for a specific client. I
have also learnt how to set up a camera to have a good frame around the
subject that is being videoed or photographed. This year I created a
factual project titled "Fear Through The Older Eyes" this project
involved me having to go interview people outside of college. Doing this
I was able to experiment what being a director is like, due to the fact I
was in charge of how the background looked and how the camera was
set up. This project also helped develop my people skills because of
having to talk to complete strangers about heavy a subject. I also think it
helped boost my self-confidence because I had to do some public
speaking when it came to pitching my video idea to possible
participants.
29. The Future
0 From this course I have been able to decided what sort of career I
would like to pursue in the future. It was during the client project
when I fully realised that I wanted to go into making
documentaries. From working with all people of different ages,
gender, race and sexuality I find that I enjoy telling peoples live
stories in a creative way.
0 I initially wanted a career in journalism but after some careful
consideration I decided that journalism wasn’t for me and looked
into film and TV studies
30. Outside College
Recently I have started playing the ukulele and enjoy learning how to play different
songs. I also enjoy playing golf, which I have also recently picked up. Travelling is
definitely my biggest interest. I love going to different countries and learning about
their cultures.
I have had experience of organising activities for a local youth club. Volunteering at
the club has helped with building teamwork skills. I think building my team work
skills will benefit myself at university because the subject that I want to study will
involve a lot of teamwork and social skills.
I had work experience at a company called CNG where I filled out different types of
forms and answered customer calls where necessary. Taking part in work
experience has helped me grow my confidence.
I have had a part-time job outside of college where I helped out at weddings, this
also helped develop my social skills due to meeting new people every weekend. I
have also worked at hotel, resulting in the same outcomes. Now I work in a retail
job which has really helped when it comes to my confidence.
I also took part in NCS where I believe I developed my teamwork and social skills
further because I was talking to and meeting new people almost daily.
I occasionally volunteer at Leeds hospital talking to children who are going
through the same neuro-muscular condition that I have. Doing this has helped me
develop my communication skills, due to having to talk to people of all different
ages.
31. Conclusion
0 What I hope to gain from university is the opportunity to use
professional equipment and to work with other students in a more
professional environment as part of a production team.
0 I'm looking forward to learning new skills from working on
challenging projects and also getting a 'closer' to real-world
experience. I hope to broaden my skillset and develop my
confidence by working on both sides of the camera.
32. Introduction
0 I have applied for the Film and Television Studies
course at Lincoln University. I chose this course
because I really liked the university and from looking
around it I feel like I would thrive in that environment.
0 I want to attend university because I want the
responsibility of living on my own. I also want to try
achieve my goals.

0 Personal Summary
0 I have been found to be hard working in doing something that I enjoy, and/or care about. I work well with others as well
as by myself. I am motivated and reliable when it comes to getting something done as I don’t like to finish doing anything
until it is completed. I am currently studying Media Studies at York College and hope to work with advertisement at the
end of college.
