2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

19. Introduction
I am applying for subjects around camera work and editing work, for camera work my focus is
filming different shots for story’s like films and editing work aimed around colour grading these
shots and adding a nice and unique visual style to them. I want to go to university to up and
improve these skills.
20. Academic History
In my previous academic years I have found that media level two had a big impact on my
decisions for the future, its where I realised what career I wanted to pursue in the future, I picked
up skills such as editing in premier pro, doing print work such as designing posters and magazine.
I also picked up knowledge on how to use adobe photoshop to create advergames. In level 3 year
one I toned my skills in these areas, the main focus however was film. In this year as a final
project I created a short film title ‘on the hour’ and this film featured various different use of
shots to convey emotion and use of editing on premier pro.
21. Current Study
Currently I am studying an Extended Diploma in creative media production and technology, in this
subject over the duration of this course I have studied, print, advergame and film, in these
different areas I have studied existing films, completed client work and made fictional pieces and
factual documentary’s. in studying in these different areas and doing practical work in them I
have picked up a multitude of skills mainly in the film areas. In studying this in the first year I have
found something that I really enjoyed and felt that its something to take on and progress further
with. I intend to take this even further through university and to employment. My favourite area
currently is editing software, the current software I am using is premier pro and I have picked up
multiple skills on this software such as colour grading and title animations.
22. The Future
In the future I want my focus to be around creating films, using cameras and editing software’s.
the main focus I want to work in and continue study is the editing side of film, using software's to
make shots look visually impressive with colour grading. A also want to work on cameras in
filming different shots. University is the next step in helping me achieve this, the knowledge and
that I will pick up while at university in these areas will improve my ability and prepare me for the
future.
23. Outside College
When outside of studying, as a hobby I enjoy writing stories and being active in sports such as
football and tennis. This demonstrates how I'm active and willing to progress, the writing is
important to me in this area as I want to bring my story's to life visually. My part time job is
currently filling forms and doing accounting work for an electricians, this has given me good
computer skills and mathematical skills. A major part of these is critical thinking which I feel is
important for the course and for university.
24. Conclusion
The reason that I want to go to university is to improve my skills and interests with the course
that I have chosen in order to become the best that I can be at the subjects that I have chosen to
study. I am a good candidate for this because I have determination to succeed in the areas I have
chosen to progress in.
