Academic History
• When I came to choose my GCSE subjects, I was already set on wanting to
pursue some sort of career in media later in life. So to try and follow that idea,
I decided to choose media as one of my GCSE subjects. After doing a project
that involved creating a trailer for a film, even though it turned out horribly, I’d
still say it was my favourite project which gave me the idea to try and pursue
the idea of film making. Going on to college, I decided to choose a media
production course. After being advised by one of my high school media
teachers that a production course would be more beneficial as they would be
more hands on. I thought though that I would try an all round media course
instead of just a film one just on the off chance that there was another aspect
of media that I could potentially enjoy. So far my favourite project in the first
year of college has been the FMP as it gave me free reign to just create
anything that I wanted. It allowed me to try and explore a media side of
mountain biking, a hobby of mine which has a very large media side which I’m
also interested in trying to pursue a career in.
Current Study
• This course, Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology has taught me a lot of skills.
It’s taught me the basics and building blocks of software's such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro
and Adobe After Effects. As well as being able to use a camera with higher technical efficiency allowing me
to create photos and videos in a more specific aesthetic style. It’s helped give me the opportunity to try
multiple different sides of media helping me further back the idea of wanting my future career in film
making. When it came to making my FMP, that was really where I realised that some sort of film making
was where I wanted to go next, I liked almost every aspect of the project and being in control of what I
wanted to make. My favourite part though was actually going out and being on location, I just had so
much fun being out with the camera, working with lighting and an actor and being hands on. I also
enjoyed having the opportunity to try software's that I wouldn’t have thought I would be interested in, for
example using the adobe audition software, I wouldn’t say at all that I understand it and would be able to
use it comprehensively, but I liked the fact that my course gave me the opportunity. If I had to choose
which software I had the most fun using and I’m the most confident in would have to be Adobe Premiere
Pro. Although I did use after effects as well for my FMP, premiere was the software I heavily used the most
for my FMP. Using it helped me gain confidence and skills as I just wanted to constantly try out new things
that would help improve my project, I’ll still say that I’m not great with the software, but I definitely know
the basics and even some more advanced skills and I’m hoping that I get to further improve my skills on
that software. I also feel as if that I’m pretty well skilled with using cameras, that being having the
knowledge to change settings such as ISO and aperture knowing what the outcome will be. I feel as if I am
definitely more confident behind a camera than I am at a computer during post production, but I feel as if
this course has helped me improve with both and I’d like to try and continue further into university to
advance these skills.
The Future
• In the future I’d like to try and further myself into a career inside of film making. At the moment I feel as if I
am torn between roles inside the film making industry, such as camera operator, cinematographer and
director. But I do know that a film making career is what I want to pursue. I believe that university will help
me achieve that because instead of just trying to go into the film making world with little experience and
basic skill knowledge, it will simply help boost my experience with working with equipment, help me gain
specific skill knowledge and also give me ideas and suggestions of what possible role I’d like to play in the
film making industry. Like college has, it will just help open up more opportunities for me to try and create
further ideas of specific roles I like the most.
• When at university I’d like to try and find people that possibly would like to do roles later in life that aren’t
the same as mine, but are like minded so I could try and create projects with other people and I wouldn’t
be just doing everything alone. For example, if I later on in life decide that I would like to try and become a
cinematographer, Id like to meet others that potentially wanted to be directors, writers, foley artists and
so on so we could team up and contribute ideas together and try and create a project. I feel as if that
creating a project where I get to be more focused on one role would help me decide what role I want to
play later in life as well as giving me an insight into working with a small production team.
Outside College
• Outside of college, at the moment I have two part time jobs. One I work at a car mechanics, mainly
cleaning around for them but I do get to learn how to do some bits, for example changing the oil in a car
and re-gassing an AC system. And the other part time job I have is at the local pub of my village as a waiter,
with that job I just do the usual job of the waiter, so taking orders, checking up on customers, taking
bookings, taking food to the customers, and taking away plates. For hobbies, I would say I have a couple,
one that has taken off fairly recently, that being basketball. But I have another hobby that I could easily say
is a big part of my life, which I also at times would like to try and explore the media side of, mountain
biking. I’ve been massively into mountain biking almost my whole life, but it was only the past two or
three years that I became seriously interested in the media side of the mountain bike world.
Unfortunately, I haven’t really been able to make any projects off of my own back at home. But that’s so
far, I’m hoping that if I manage to get a good video editing software at home before summer, I’m going to
try and approach college and ask if I can borrow equipment over the summer to try and create my own
mountain bike film. At one point during my FMP, I was approached by someone who owned a nightclub
who asked if I would be able to try and create a promotional video for the nightclub. This was done after
she found out I was a media student through someone I worked for at the time. I would have liked to take
it to try and bump up my experience, but it was mid FMP I was swamped down by that and just simply
didn’t have the time. I feel as if this makes me a better candidate because it shows that I have clear
commitment, that being shown with having two jobs, I need the jobs to try and save for a car, so I didn’t
stop at one job, I got another to get as much as I could out of the time I have available. Also, although I
haven’t been able to make any projects outside of college, the fact that I want to and I’m trying to work
towards it shows my interest in the subject and that I want to spend my own time when I don’t need to to
try and make something.
Conclusion
• I want to go to university to try and improve my skills on the subjects that I already know, but also learn
new subjects and skills. I also want to go to university because I feel as if it’s an obvious step towards
getting into the film making industry, that being because I will have been taught the necessary skills to
progress into the industry. It will help me achieve higher levels within subjects that I want to try and
pursue like post-production, script writing and camera work. I feel as if if I am a good candidate because
when it comes to something that I want, I believe that I am very committed and confident, bot not
overconfident, I’m confident at where am but not scared to ask for help when I need it because I always
want to improve, especially when it’s with something that I enjoy, such as media. I’m a good candidate for
a subject such as media because I enjoy it, so that means that I’m willing to put in the effort that it needs
and more when it comes to projects.
Introduction
• I am applying for film making subjects as I want to pursue a career in film making, yet, I am not sure
whether I want to work within big budget films or smaller indie films, possibly hobby related ones like
mountain biking, but I know I want to work within the film industry. I want to go to university as I feel as if
it is an obvious an helpful step towards to getting myself solidly into the film industry by building skills and
experience at the same time which is something that really appeals to me. What I’d like to do is gain as
much experience in fields and skills as I possibly could so it gives me a good set of careers that I could try
and take later in life and I feel as if university is the place for that.
Year 1 Review
Which projects have you enjoyed most
this year & why?
• By far my favourite project to far this year has been the FMP. I loved the free reign of being able to make
anything that I wanted. It gave me the opportunity to try and create a media product that would fall into
the media side of a hobby that has become very important to me. So being able to do that has been was
very fun. I really enjoyed the production part, especially the on location parts, I found them the most fun
because it allowed me to be outside with the camera. I found being out with the camera, trying to sort
lighting and camera angles very enjoyable, especially when I would watch the shot back and it was perfect.
But I also like the parts where some shots needed attention as they wouldn’t work or just simply didn’t
end out looking the way I envisioned. Being on my location was my favourite part of the project being it
was probably the part where I had the most fun because all of the time I spent researching, planning and
etc was clearly coming together before me. But I also enjoyed the post-production part too, but you could
say I enjoyed that for different reasons. I enjoyed the challenging side of it, the fact that I was trying to
make a project as best as I possibly could so I tried to learn new skills. For example, I enjoyed the challenge
of learning how to use after effects for the first time, I learnt how to create an animation for the logo of
the brand I was advertising to be used at the start of the video as well as tracked text for the name of the
rider. I felt a great sense of reward after I completed the shots on after effects and used them in my advert
which helped the project be a lot more enjoyable.
Which projects have you least enjoyed
[& why]?
• I’d have to say that the project that I enjoyed the least was the audio project. This is purely down to the
fact that the options I had to choose from to create an audio product, didn’t really have an option that
greatly interested me. I should’ve maybe chosen the option to try and create a podcast, but the idea of
myself acting put me off, and I just felt like my friends wouldn’t be willing to try either, so it resulted in me
picking the option to create a soundscape. Never having really listened to a soundscape, I didn’t have a
great idea what I was making, and even after research, it didn’t have a great idea on how to make it. I
believe that another reason why I didn’t enjoy it that much was because I felt as if production was rather
boring because it was mainly just me having to go round my house making weird noises and just doing
simple cutting and placing together when it came to post production. Overall I just didn’t really feel like I
got much enjoyment out of trying to create my audio project, I feel as if this is because I really any visual
side of media, so, if it had a visual side to it, say for example if I was creating all these sounds for a scene
and it was the foley, it would be different. I guess I just don’t connect to it as easily if I can’t see it even if
it’s my own work. I believe as well that maybe if I was enjoying my work more, I maybe would have put
more effort in and the final product might have been better, then allowing me to feel happier about the
project, like a chain reaction really.
What is you biggest success
• I’d say that my biggest success was my whole FMP. I feel as if everything in it, that being my research,
planning or production was the best I had done yet through the year. I just put as much effort in as I could
and it came out not only as good as I wanted, but some aspects even better than I wanted. I just overall
feel very proud with how my work turned out and how much effort I put into it. I feel as if all the time I
spent working on it wasn’t wasted and has created this project that I feel most proud of. I also feel finally
that I created a product that I’m almost dead set happy with. I know if I came back with more time I could
create something better, possibly a lot better, I’d like to think so. But looking at the product I had created
and the time I had to do it in, I feel as if I’ve made something rather good. Whist creating this project, like
usual I won’t lie there were some problems and mistakes, like for example the fact that I thought I’d be
able to get all my filming done in one day, when in fat it took three. But there weren’t any major problems
like there has been in other projects, like not being able to book good equipment, or bad time
management, which obviously, made the project a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable. I’d say it also went
rather well with the photoshop side of my project too. It was going ok up until the point I was given the
idea to create a poster with three different weather backgrounds. To do so I followed YouTube tutorials,
but not completely, some was done by myself and I felt my skills on photoshop were definitely improved
by this project.
What has been your biggest mistake in
coursework
• I found in the first couple of projects, my time management was terrible, almost always
spending the last week of the project with my head down rushing to get it done resulting in a
rushed product with a quality lower than I had planned simply because I didn’t have the time
to create something better. In the music video project, I stupidly believed that I would be
able to wait until the last weekend of the project I had available to film and try and film
everything I needed. I did manage to capture all the shots that I wanted but it did cause that
weekend to be very hectic because I basically had to dedicate and spend that whole weekend
to filming, which caused me to feel very stressed whilst filming. To continue on through that
project, because I had left it so late to film, it meant that I started editing later than I could
have. Which obviously in the long run meant that I had less time to try and put together my
video, sync up the beat and so on and I feel as if I had managed my time better I maybe could
have made an overall better video and project.
• Another mistake I found that I kept doing was overestimating my skill and underestimating
the time needed for projects resulting in myself believing that I could create bigger and more
elaborate projects which caused me to feel under pressure as I came towards the end of
certain projects. For example with the game side of my adventure project, I believed that I
could make multiple levels not realising that I had created a rather intricate first level to
create.
Which skills do you think you have
develop most?
• Although I do think one of my biggest mistakes was my time management, at first, I do believe that after I
got a few projects under my built and a bit more experience on how to try and complete projects, I did
find that my time management, and I like to think by a lot too because in the past few projects, I believe
that my time management has been perfect. I would move from one part of the project to another exactly
when I want to feeling as if I had completed each step with as much detail as it needed. I believe that if
you compare my time management from my first project to the time management in the last project it
would be clear that my time management has improved drastically.
• I also believe that one skill that has improved was my technical skills with a camera. Not only do I feel as if
I have improved my skills within setting up the camera that I was working with, like my understanding with
ISO and aperture. But I also feel as if my skills in picking camera angles for shots and so on has also
improved. I don’t longer feel as if I am just setting up boring shots all the time anymore, I now feel as if I
have the confidence to try and use more technical angles to help enhance the scene which overall just
improves the project.
• I also feel as if my editing skills have improved over the time and opportunities I have had to be able to use
editing software. I believe that my skills have improved simply through my opportunities combined with
trial and error. And if that didn’t work, there would be the occasional YouTube tutorial. Again comparing
my first project that involves editing to my latest, there has clearly been improvement.
What area are aiming to specialise in
during Year 2?
• For my second year at college, I’m aiming at to specialise in the video are of media,
more specifically film making. But I’m not entirely sure what aspect of film making
that I want to try and look into. My idea is to just specialise in film making and see
what opportunities it opens up for me there and see if it points me in a more
specific area of filmmaking that I would like to try and pursue as a career, possibly
camera operating or cinematography.

I feel as if I am definitely more confident behind a camera than I am at a computer during post production, but I feel as if this course has helped me improve with both and I’d like to try and continue further into university to advance these skills.

The Future • Inthe future I’d like to try and further myself into a career inside of film making. At the moment I feel as if I am torn between roles inside the film making industry, such as camera operator, cinematographer and director. But I do know that a film making career is what I want to pursue. I believe that university will help me achieve that because instead of just trying to go into the film making world with little experience and basic skill knowledge, it will simply help boost my experience with working with equipment, help me gain specific skill knowledge and also give me ideas and suggestions of what possible role I’d like to play in the film making industry. Like college has, it will just help open up more opportunities for me to try and create further ideas of specific roles I like the most. • When at university I’d like to try and find people that possibly would like to do roles later in life that aren’t the same as mine, but are like minded so I could try and create projects with other people and I wouldn’t be just doing everything alone. For example, if I later on in life decide that I would like to try and become a cinematographer, Id like to meet others that potentially wanted to be directors, writers, foley artists and so on so we could team up and contribute ideas together and try and create a project. I feel as if that creating a project where I get to be more focused on one role would help me decide what role I want to play later in life as well as giving me an insight into working with a small production team.

Outside College • Outsideof college, at the moment I have two part time jobs. One I work at a car mechanics, mainly cleaning around for them but I do get to learn how to do some bits, for example changing the oil in a car and re-gassing an AC system. And the other part time job I have is at the local pub of my village as a waiter, with that job I just do the usual job of the waiter, so taking orders, checking up on customers, taking bookings, taking food to the customers, and taking away plates. For hobbies, I would say I have a couple, one that has taken off fairly recently, that being basketball. But I have another hobby that I could easily say is a big part of my life, which I also at times would like to try and explore the media side of, mountain biking. I’ve been massively into mountain biking almost my whole life, but it was only the past two or three years that I became seriously interested in the media side of the mountain bike world. Unfortunately, I haven’t really been able to make any projects off of my own back at home. But that’s so far, I’m hoping that if I manage to get a good video editing software at home before summer, I’m going to try and approach college and ask if I can borrow equipment over the summer to try and create my own mountain bike film. At one point during my FMP, I was approached by someone who owned a nightclub who asked if I would be able to try and create a promotional video for the nightclub. This was done after she found out I was a media student through someone I worked for at the time. I would have liked to take it to try and bump up my experience, but it was mid FMP I was swamped down by that and just simply didn’t have the time. I feel as if this makes me a better candidate because it shows that I have clear commitment, that being shown with having two jobs, I need the jobs to try and save for a car, so I didn’t stop at one job, I got another to get as much as I could out of the time I have available. Also, although I haven’t been able to make any projects outside of college, the fact that I want to and I’m trying to work towards it shows my interest in the subject and that I want to spend my own time when I don’t need to to try and make something.

Conclusion • I wantto go to university to try and improve my skills on the subjects that I already know, but also learn new subjects and skills. I also want to go to university because I feel as if it’s an obvious step towards getting into the film making industry, that being because I will have been taught the necessary skills to progress into the industry. It will help me achieve higher levels within subjects that I want to try and pursue like post-production, script writing and camera work. I feel as if if I am a good candidate because when it comes to something that I want, I believe that I am very committed and confident, bot not overconfident, I’m confident at where am but not scared to ask for help when I need it because I always want to improve, especially when it’s with something that I enjoy, such as media. I’m a good candidate for a subject such as media because I enjoy it, so that means that I’m willing to put in the effort that it needs and more when it comes to projects.

Introduction • I amapplying for film making subjects as I want to pursue a career in film making, yet, I am not sure whether I want to work within big budget films or smaller indie films, possibly hobby related ones like mountain biking, but I know I want to work within the film industry. I want to go to university as I feel as if it is an obvious an helpful step towards to getting myself solidly into the film industry by building skills and experience at the same time which is something that really appeals to me. What I’d like to do is gain as much experience in fields and skills as I possibly could so it gives me a good set of careers that I could try and take later in life and I feel as if university is the place for that.

Which projects haveyou enjoyed most this year & why? • By far my favourite project to far this year has been the FMP. I loved the free reign of being able to make anything that I wanted. It gave me the opportunity to try and create a media product that would fall into the media side of a hobby that has become very important to me. So being able to do that has been was very fun. I really enjoyed the production part, especially the on location parts, I found them the most fun because it allowed me to be outside with the camera. I found being out with the camera, trying to sort lighting and camera angles very enjoyable, especially when I would watch the shot back and it was perfect. But I also like the parts where some shots needed attention as they wouldn’t work or just simply didn’t end out looking the way I envisioned. Being on my location was my favourite part of the project being it was probably the part where I had the most fun because all of the time I spent researching, planning and etc was clearly coming together before me. But I also enjoyed the post-production part too, but you could say I enjoyed that for different reasons. I enjoyed the challenging side of it, the fact that I was trying to make a project as best as I possibly could so I tried to learn new skills. For example, I enjoyed the challenge of learning how to use after effects for the first time, I learnt how to create an animation for the logo of the brand I was advertising to be used at the start of the video as well as tracked text for the name of the rider. I felt a great sense of reward after I completed the shots on after effects and used them in my advert which helped the project be a lot more enjoyable.

Which projects haveyou least enjoyed [& why]? • I’d have to say that the project that I enjoyed the least was the audio project. This is purely down to the fact that the options I had to choose from to create an audio product, didn’t really have an option that greatly interested me. I should’ve maybe chosen the option to try and create a podcast, but the idea of myself acting put me off, and I just felt like my friends wouldn’t be willing to try either, so it resulted in me picking the option to create a soundscape. Never having really listened to a soundscape, I didn’t have a great idea what I was making, and even after research, it didn’t have a great idea on how to make it. I believe that another reason why I didn’t enjoy it that much was because I felt as if production was rather boring because it was mainly just me having to go round my house making weird noises and just doing simple cutting and placing together when it came to post production. Overall I just didn’t really feel like I got much enjoyment out of trying to create my audio project, I feel as if this is because I really any visual side of media, so, if it had a visual side to it, say for example if I was creating all these sounds for a scene and it was the foley, it would be different. I guess I just don’t connect to it as easily if I can’t see it even if it’s my own work. I believe as well that maybe if I was enjoying my work more, I maybe would have put more effort in and the final product might have been better, then allowing me to feel happier about the project, like a chain reaction really.

What is youbiggest success • I’d say that my biggest success was my whole FMP. I feel as if everything in it, that being my research, planning or production was the best I had done yet through the year. I just put as much effort in as I could and it came out not only as good as I wanted, but some aspects even better than I wanted. I just overall feel very proud with how my work turned out and how much effort I put into it. I feel as if all the time I spent working on it wasn’t wasted and has created this project that I feel most proud of. I also feel finally that I created a product that I’m almost dead set happy with. I know if I came back with more time I could create something better, possibly a lot better, I’d like to think so. But looking at the product I had created and the time I had to do it in, I feel as if I’ve made something rather good. Whist creating this project, like usual I won’t lie there were some problems and mistakes, like for example the fact that I thought I’d be able to get all my filming done in one day, when in fat it took three. But there weren’t any major problems like there has been in other projects, like not being able to book good equipment, or bad time management, which obviously, made the project a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable. I’d say it also went rather well with the photoshop side of my project too. It was going ok up until the point I was given the idea to create a poster with three different weather backgrounds. To do so I followed YouTube tutorials, but not completely, some was done by myself and I felt my skills on photoshop were definitely improved by this project.

What has beenyour biggest mistake in coursework • I found in the first couple of projects, my time management was terrible, almost always spending the last week of the project with my head down rushing to get it done resulting in a rushed product with a quality lower than I had planned simply because I didn’t have the time to create something better. In the music video project, I stupidly believed that I would be able to wait until the last weekend of the project I had available to film and try and film everything I needed. I did manage to capture all the shots that I wanted but it did cause that weekend to be very hectic because I basically had to dedicate and spend that whole weekend to filming, which caused me to feel very stressed whilst filming. To continue on through that project, because I had left it so late to film, it meant that I started editing later than I could have. Which obviously in the long run meant that I had less time to try and put together my video, sync up the beat and so on and I feel as if I had managed my time better I maybe could have made an overall better video and project. • Another mistake I found that I kept doing was overestimating my skill and underestimating the time needed for projects resulting in myself believing that I could create bigger and more elaborate projects which caused me to feel under pressure as I came towards the end of certain projects. For example with the game side of my adventure project, I believed that I could make multiple levels not realising that I had created a rather intricate first level to create.

Which skills doyou think you have develop most? • Although I do think one of my biggest mistakes was my time management, at first, I do believe that after I got a few projects under my built and a bit more experience on how to try and complete projects, I did find that my time management, and I like to think by a lot too because in the past few projects, I believe that my time management has been perfect. I would move from one part of the project to another exactly when I want to feeling as if I had completed each step with as much detail as it needed. I believe that if you compare my time management from my first project to the time management in the last project it would be clear that my time management has improved drastically. • I also believe that one skill that has improved was my technical skills with a camera. Not only do I feel as if I have improved my skills within setting up the camera that I was working with, like my understanding with ISO and aperture. But I also feel as if my skills in picking camera angles for shots and so on has also improved. I don’t longer feel as if I am just setting up boring shots all the time anymore, I now feel as if I have the confidence to try and use more technical angles to help enhance the scene which overall just improves the project. • I also feel as if my editing skills have improved over the time and opportunities I have had to be able to use editing software. I believe that my skills have improved simply through my opportunities combined with trial and error. And if that didn’t work, there would be the occasional YouTube tutorial. Again comparing my first project that involves editing to my latest, there has clearly been improvement.

What area areaiming to specialise in during Year 2? • For my second year at college, I’m aiming at to specialise in the video are of media, more specifically film making. But I’m not entirely sure what aspect of film making that I want to try and look into. My idea is to just specialise in film making and see what opportunities it opens up for me there and see if it points me in a more specific area of filmmaking that I would like to try and pursue as a career, possibly camera operating or cinematography.
