Sentence and Clause
Sentence and Clause
 A sentence is a set of words that complete in itself , and generally contains a subject
and a main verb.
 A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb.
Independent clause can stand alone as a sentence.
dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence.
Sentence structures
 There are four different sentence
structures
1. Simple sentence
2. Compound sentence
3. Complex sentence
4. Compound – complex sentence
Simple
sentence
 Simple sentences contain 1 independent
clause.
 it contains a subject and a verb.
For example:
Ali opened the door.
She lives in Amman.
.
Compound
sentence
 Compound sentences contain 2 independent clauses, and are
linked by a coordinating conjunction.
 Coordinating conjunctions can include : for , and , nor , but , or ,
yet and so.
 For example:
 ( Two separate independent clauses )
 Ali opened the door.
 he looked outside.
 ( compound sentence )
 Ali opened the door ,and he looked outside.
 ( Two separate independent clauses )
 She didn’t have enough cash.
 She paid by credit card.
 ( compound sentence )
 She didn’t have enough cash, so she paid by credit card.
Complex
sentence
 Complex sentences contain 1 independent
clause and 1 or more dependent clause.
 Dependent clauses are linked by either a
subordinating conjunction ( although, after ,
because , since , when…) or a relative
pronoun (who, which , that…).
For example:
The baby laughed because the cartoon was
funny.
If he travels to Italy again, Ali will spend more
time in Napoli.
Compound-complex
sentence
 Compound-complex sentences contain 2
or more independent clauses, and 1 or
more dependent clause that is linked with
a coordinating conjunction.
For example:
Sara must be at work early today because
there is an important meeting, but she is
feeling sick.
