This document discusses the four types of sentences according to structure: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. It defines each sentence type and provides examples. Simple sentences contain one independent clause. Compound sentences contain two or more independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions. Complex sentences contain one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Compound-complex sentences contain two or more independent clauses as well as one or more dependent clauses. 5. 1. The definition of sentence
A sentences is a full predication containing a subject plus a predicate
with a finite verb and a complete thought.
For example:
Mr. Hanung teach me of the Medium of Language Teaching subject
in five semester.

6. 2. The definition of clause
Clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb with a
complete thought. A clause can sometimes act as a sentence-this type
of clause is called an independent clause.
Actually there are two kind of clauses, independent and dependent.
Independent clause can stand alone. In contrast, dependent clause
can’t stand alone, it is always depend on an independent clause.
Independent clause have four classification consist of; simple,
compound, complex and compound-complex sentences. Usually some
of us called it the types of sentences according to structure.

2.1. Simple sentence
simple sentence have only one full predication (one subject-
verb combination) in the form of independent clause.
For example:
Umi eat this bred.

9. Simple senyences’ formula
1) SV (simple subject plus simple verb)
For example: Umi speak english well.
2) SSV (compound subject plus simple verb)
For example: Umi and Nikmah speak English well.
3) SVV (simple subject plus compound verb)
For example: Nikmah read and write the English journal of reading.
4) SSVV (compound subject and compound verb)
For example: Nikmah and Nurul speak and write English.

Compound sentences have two or more full predications in the
form of independent clauses.
For example:
My family goes camping every new year, and we usually have fun.

A coordinating conjunction is type of connecting word,
consist of; For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet and So (FANBOYS).

12. 2.3. Complex sentences
Complex sentences is a sentence that have two or more prediction.
One of these is an independent clause (or, main clause) that is similar
to the simple sentence, and one or more of these are dependent
clauses (or, subordinate clauses).

13.  Complex sentence’s formula
There are two kind complex sentence’s formula, they are:
1. Independent clause Dependent clause No comma
(IC) (DC)
Or
2. Dependent clause , Independent clause Comma
(DC) comma (IC)

14. The subordinate conjunction:
There are some subordinating conjunction
1. Time : after, as soon as, before, since, until, while, when,
whenever, etc.
2. Reason: as, because, etc.
3. Contrast: although, though, etc.
4. Purpose: as if, if, unless, etc.

15. For example:
1. Umi wake up early every morning because
she have to prepare the breakfast. (IC DC)
2. When I went to school by motorcycle, there
was an accident. (DC ‘comma’ IC)

16. 2.4. Compound-complex sentences
The last one is compound-complex
sentences that two or more independent
clause and one ore more dependent
clause.

17. For example:
Nurul found a lot of expired food, but she didn’t get rid of it
because she was too lazy to do it.
 Nurul found a lot of expired food = IC
 But = SC (subordinate conjunction)
 She didn’t get rid of it= IC
 Because= AC
 She was too lazy do it= IC
