Trait theory states that humans possess a variety of characteristics that remain consistent over time and make up our personalities. While not everyone shares the same traits, we all draw from the same pool of characteristics. The Big Five personality model identifies the five main personality traits that make up an individual's overall personality: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Openness to Experience. These traits influence behaviors like how outgoing or reserved one is, how they interact with others, reliability, ability to handle stress, and openness to new ideas. Human resources professionals use this model to help place employees according to their personality traits.
