Gender Stereotypes In Nickel And Dimed
In a Low Wage World You can t judge a book by it s cover . Every day our parents tell us as children
that we cannot judge things based on the first glances that we see. However, people in our society
today have filled their heads with stereotypes in order to judge people and their abilities. And when
hiring employees, stereotypes and first glances is all an employer sees and therefore care about. In her
book, Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich proves that a person s race and gender have a massive
influence on the type of low wage work a person can find, due to the stereotypes that are associated
with gender and race in our society today.
Ehrenreich exploits the abuse that takes on in the workplace toward minorities, which ironically ...

Every establishment that she applies would rather hire her as a waitress because she is white and
speaks English. When applying to Hearthside, Ehrenreich even downgrades herself in order to attain a
job as a housekeeper. I mutter about being woefully out of practice as a waitress, but he s already on to
the uniform (Ehrenreich, 16). However, even though the author attempts to prove she would not make
a good waitress, her employer is already stubborn and thinks that she is more worthy as a server as
opposed to a housekeeper. So why did her boss make her a waitress when she clearly wanted to be a
housekeeper? Her boss made her a waitress simply, because he used stereotypes to judge the author.
Therefore, her boss only saw a white woman who was better equipped with serving skills even though
Ehrenreich believed she had better housekeeping skills. Now, sadly if a fluent English speaking
Hispanic applied to the same job, she would only be hired as a housekeeper. In fact, she would be
rejected as a waitress for the same reason that the author couldn t become a housekeeper; the of color
her skin. In today s society, when someone thinks of a hotel maid, they think of a Latin woman who
isn t fluent in English. It is this very stereotype that affects the type of job a low wage job a person
receives simply because of the color of their skin and not their personal abilities. In her book,
Ehrenreich manifests that

Steve Jobs As A Technopreneure
Q1. What are the factors that contributed to the success and failure of Steve Jobs as a technopreneure?
Factors are those things that influence a person in his field of work, studies and his way of living and
life. Steve Jobs is called the Silicon Valley Pioneer and the author of unique leadership and idea. Steve
has come really close in achieving his goal, managing to make a name for him in all of the business
and technological world.
So what did it take him to get to the top?
Factors that contributed to his success:
1. Passion: Steve worked in his father s workbench. He knew from the beginning that his future is in
creating new things but he did not know what those things were. When he met Wozniak, then he got to
know that those things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Charisma: Steve Jobs had the charm and ability to convince people. He had the power to convince the
investors to have their partnership with him to make a great business production and he also
convinced them that they need his products.
9. Vision: He had an open mind and the ability to put new twists in old techniques. His this ability
makes him different from his competitors. Jobs vision was incorporated/included into every aspect of
company s strategy.
10. Cleverness: If Steve Jobs was not clever, he would have not think innovative ideas to make
amazing products that had changed people s life, hence making it better.
11. Motivation: He had a great self motivation. Steve Jobs did not want to stay boring and dull or
regular. He wanted a change. He did not only want to change his country, he wanted to make a
universal change. He wanted a revolution. A change was not enough for him; he wanted to create a
completely new awareness.
12. Competiveness: If we do business, we produce a product that is competitive and attractive and
cheap just like Steve Jobs do.
Jobs become arrogant when his business was progressed. He did not really care that his best friend

The Chemistry Of Organic Contaminants
Over the past ten years, the Institute of Gas Technology, now Gas Technology Institute (GTI), USA
and others have conducted research on the bioremediation of organic contaminants in soil. Most of
this work has been associated with remediation of former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) sites, soils
from industrial areas and oil production areas have also been studied. The results have shown that: (1)
organic contaminants are biodegraded by indigenous soil microorganisms to a concentration that no
longer decreases, or that decreases very slowly, with continued treatment; (2) reductions below this
concentration are limited by the availability of the contaminants to the microorganisms; and (3) the
residual contaminants that remain after biological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bacterial enzymes will catalyze the insertion of oxygen into the hydrocarbon so that the molecule can
subsequently be consumed by cellular metabolism. Because of this oxygen is one of the most
important requirements for the biodegradation of oil. Table 1 shows the list of some of the
microorganisms which are involved in the bioremediation of oil contamination.
Microbial Seeding
Oil degrading microorganisms seem to be ubiquitous, with their number typically limited by the
hydrocarbon supply (Namazi et al., 2008). Another approach is to add exogenous microorganisms
with known degradative activities, either natural isolates or engineered (Narasimhan et al., 1983).
Seeding involves the introduction of allochthonous microorganisms into the natural environment for
the purpose of increasing the rate or extent, or both of biodegradation of pollutants. The rationale for
this approach is that the autochthonous microorganisms may not be capable of degrading the wide
range of potential substrates present in complex mixtures such as petroleum (Raghavan, 1998).
Terrestrial ecosystems differ from aquatic ecosystems in that soils contain higher concentrations of
organic and inorganic matter and generally, large number of microorganisms and are more variable in
terms of physical and chemical conditions (Bossert et al., 1984). The presence of indigenous
microorganisms which are highly adapted to a particular environment would negatively influence the

The Vampire Effect Of Dracula
Not many people would think that they can be compared to Count Dracula. Considered to be one of
the most well known monsters of all time, Count Dracula sucks the blood of his victims, which would
ultimately lead to their death. While this seems like a very unique example, it can be applied to nearly
every person, specifically in the college stetting. This phenomenon that can be linked to this monster
is called the vampire effect. First used in the book ______, this term refers to the what happens in
social groups due to different personality types that were caused by a difference in economic
background. Set in a college dormitory, chapter 4 of the book discusses how there is a difference in the
social lives of students who are quiet versus students who are more outgoing. Students who were shy
were generally ignored and did not seem to partake in many social activities. While Armstrong and
Hamilton suggest that the Vampire Effect arises due to the social students knowingly ignoring and
rejecting the shyer students, that is not the case. The cycle through which the effect takes place starts
with self comparison due to economic status, envy, and self blame, and results in anxiety and self
isolation. Although this is done unintentionally, consciously known factors such debt and class also
play a role in the process.
As Armstrong and Hamilton describe the social isolates , Others treated the quieter roommate as sort
of a sidekick or an invisible appendage (105).

Shabbat s Influence On Judaism

Mission Objectives Of Jazzpunk
Jazzpunk opens with your character, Agent Polyblank, receiving a mission from his superior The
Director. The mission involves infiltrating the Russian consulate but this game is no Splinter Cell. Set
in an alternate reality where the Cold War is still raging, Polyblank must deal with robots, spies and
some of the strangest gadgets ever seen in a game.
The creators cite comedy films such as Airplane and Naked Gun as major influences on the gameplay
so if you are expecting any type of seriousness from Jazzpunk you are in for a shock. You are given an
overall objective for each mission that is started by swallowing Missionoyl pills by the way, but after a
level starts you are left to your own devices. I strongly suggest that you actually ignore your mission
objective for as long as possible and explore the environments otherwise you will miss out on some of
the best elements that the game has to offer.
What I love about Jazzpunk is that it is totally unpredictable. As you wander around the levels and
interact with the environment you never know what is going to happen next. One minute you might be
helping a frog to hack into the Wi Fi of a coffee shop and the next shooting champagne corks at
enemies in a Quake deathmatch style mini game called Wedding Quake. It is a surreal but thoroughly
enjoyable experience that had me laughing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

wish that I could say more about the game but doing so would ruin some of the surprises that it has in

on offer. If you are not a fan of spoof comedy films and cartoons the humor in Jazzpunk is probably
not going to appeal to you but everyone else should definitely check it

Analysis Of Pixar s New Man
The New Man as described by Ken Gillam and Shannon R. Wooden in Post Princess Models of
Gender: The New Man in Disney/Pixar explains the way in which men are portrayed in children s
films today and how that varies from older films. Contrasting this New Man are all the dangerous and
traditional men Michael S. Kimmel describes in Gender, Class and Terrorism because these men are
uber macho males as explained by Gillam and Wooden. Pixar s New Man definition has evolved from
the original definition of what it means to be male and have masculine qualities which escapes the
rhetoric of masculinity(a term coined by Kimmel) which if incorporated into modern society would
lessen negative events that happen in the world. When speaking of negative events that covers all
damaging behavior that comes from following what C.J. Pascoe explains in Dude, You re a Fag :
Adolescent Masculinity and the Fag Discourse . In Pascoe s work he describes the way in which men
treat each other to diminish each other s manhood.
When introduced to the world, Pixar s New Man would be empowered by equality and would not
demand power as well as leadership but would find strength in being a part of a team. Kimmel
explains that alpha males in current society continue to feel a seething resentment against women,
whom they perceive as stealing their rightful place at the head of the table (593). Gillam and Wooden

Understanding The Chinese Culture Of A Chinese Patient
Many health care professionals think that if patients are just treated with respect, then cultural issues
will be avoided. That statement is not the correct. Five points of area that affect nursing care when
taking care of a Chinese patient, are the cultural beliefs with medical treatments, who and when to
discuss the prognosis and medical treatment to, dietary beliefs, pregnancies beliefs, and death and
dying. Many Chinese people believe in traditional Chinese medical treatments, and if the doctors and
nurses disregard their beliefs, then that could lead to mistrust. Chinese people may try traditional
approaches first, and then seek medical care if they fail. Communication barriers may delay patients
from getting medical treatment. Cross cultural communication skills are extremely important to avoid
miscommunication. A couple accommodations needed in nursing care would be to take some extra
time to build a rapport with the patient before discussing any medical issues. Recognize how the
Chinese culture views doctors and nurses, and encourage the patient to ask questions, and give them a
chance to answer the questions. In the Chinese culture, when the patient is slow to respond to a
question, or seems to be hesitant, it is simply a sign that respect is being given to the person that is
asking the question (Cross Cultural Communications for Healthcare Professionals, 2015). Chinese
people speak in low volume and considered Americans to speak loud, so health care

Pain Group Interaction
Through history, painful experiences have played a significant role in social interactions and bonding
rituals within cultures across the world. Therefore Brock Bastian, Jolanda Jetted and Laura J Ferris,
developed a series of social experiments in order to understand and prove the link between pain and
group cohesion. These individuals conducted three experiments, that involve different painful
experiences and tasks, set to the subjects in order to understand its affects on group interaction and
cooperation. Experiment one examines whether enduring painful experiences as a group can create an
intimate environment causing for greater bonding then a non painful social experience. There was two
different tasks, first the subjects had to submerge their hands in iced water and the other Participants in
the non pain condition completed the same task with room temperature water for a fixed duration of
90 seconds. In both conditions, participants had to sort out metal balls within the water. The second
task involved making the group in the pain condition to hold an upright squat for as long as possible,
and the non pain condition was to stand on one leg (could change legs, if felt strain) for only sixty
seconds. ANOVA (analysis of variance) revealed a slight increase in ... Show more content on

Experiment two followed the same procedure as experiment one although at the end they introduced
an economic game. They used this economic game as a tool to measure cooperation. This game

higher group payoff (if all members selected this number) therefore selecting one meant being less
cooperative. ANOVA revealed that pain had a medium/large effect on cooperation amongst subjects.

Adr 6-22 Values
Why do you wake up in the morning? Who are you deep down as a person or Soldier? What are your
values? These are soul searching questions that the Army needs and wants to know. Getting to know
the individuals that the Army is comprised of will give you a better understanding on how to lead
them. This is where ADRP 6 22 attributes and competencies come into play. The Army profession
certifies competence, character and commitment and each one is emphasized differently.
Character is defined as a person s moral and ethical qualities, basically who you are as a person. Your
character impacts every decision you make or don t make. It will drive the train on every aspect of
your personal and military career. The Army emphasizes that it wants leaders of character based on
regulation and the Army Values. The key to the Army s leadership model is that it will fit into almost
every Soldiers own set of values. As an organization the Army s core values must resonate with every
Soldier in order to operate. When you integrate values it is no longer someone else s view but rather a
unified set of core values that everyone believes in. When you are a leader of character with unified
values you start to build trust with your Soldiers. Through your actions, and your words credibility
starts to form. Once credible, your Soldiers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Army everyone starts out in the compliance phase until they believe in the leaders and their
mission. This can only happen after unification is formed between each Soldier and the Army Values.
Commitment is emphasized in every one of the Army Values. Each Soldier starts their enlistment or
commission with an oath committing to the upholding and defending the Nation and its constitution.
Without commitment it would be impossible to accomplish action that the U.S Military deems
appropriate. Without commitment the Army is not unified but rather a lot of

Harlem Vs Post-Modernism
Birds born in a cage think flying is an illness said by Alejandro Jodorowski. Writing between the
Harlem Renaissance and Post Modernism is very similar in that they both address social issues, from
racism to self harm. The Harlem Renaissance poems, The Negro Speaks of Rivers and I, Too can be
compared to the Post Modernist poems Cut and Manhattan Buddha through the use of figurative
language and subject material. In both stories Cut by Sylvia Plath and I, Too by Langston Hughes,
they address serious issues. In Cut a girl finds joy in cutting her thumb instead of an onion (Plath 2).
Self harm is a serious issue in today s society. Plath does a good job at portraying the way the girl
enjoys inflicting pain on herself and admires the cut. Another serious issue that has been around for
centuries is racism. In the story I, Too , Hughes displays the feelings the man gets when he is left out
at dinners when they have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Negro Speak of Rivers , the man is describing the things he has seen and the way his soul has
grown deep like the rivers (Hughes 3). Hughes uses pathos in this story to relate to the reader and
make it mean something to them in the way that the man is so appreciative of simple things such as
rivers. He bathed in rivers and lived next to them and still appreciates what they have done for him.
This is similar in Manhattan Buddha when a man is torn between jumping from a building or burning
in it. Even with a choice of how to pass he sees it all and smiles (Smith Soto 8). This relates to pathos
to make the readers think about how content and at peace he was with what was happening. It also
relates back to the reader s emotions relating to the events at 9/11. Both Hughes and Smith Soto tap
into the reader s emotions by their use of figurative

Part of the Earned Value Management technique is the monitoring of variances from the approved
baseline of costs and schedule. The variances are useful in determining the overall project health and
status.
Schedule Variance (SV): The Schedule Variance indicates a value which is a measure of how much the
project is either ahead or behind at a given point in time. For any given point in time, once the EV and
PV are known the SV can easily be calculated. The formula for SV is quite simply: SV = EV PV. Here
a positive value indicates that the project is ahead at the current point in time and a negative value
would indicate the opposite that a project is behind at the current point in time.
Cost Variance (CV): The Cost Variance indicates a value which is a measure of how much the project
is either overspent or underspent at any given point in time. For any given point in time, once the EV
and AC are known the CV can easily be calculated. The formula for CV is quite simply: CV = EV AC.
Here a positive value indicates that the project is under spent at the current point in time and a
negative value would indicate the opposite that a project is over spent at the current point in time. The
Cost Variance at the end of the project is calculated as follows: CV = BAC AC. The same above
rationale is applied to positive and negative numbers to indicate if the project is under spent or over
spent respectively.
To measure schedule or cost efficiency there are two

Johnson Majority Opinion focuses on an actual court case based on a situation where a flag was
burned. The people of Texas were outraged with Johnson. During the time of the case the people
gained acceptance to allowing Johnson to be a free man. The way to preserve the flag s special role is
not to punish those who feel differently about these matters. It is to persuade them that they are wrong.
, an excerpt from Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion (line38), states that those who freely express

American Flag Stands for Tolerance , an article based on the Johnson case, focuses on a person has a

Analysis Of Accidental Death Of An Anarchist
In Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo, farce is prevalent throughout the play. Fo sought to
recreate traditional farce and the comedic effect it creates. In Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Fo
succeeded in creating Didactic Farce, combining comedic values of traditional farce with a rage of
injustice. Fo believed farce to be the most effective way to provoke thought about Pinelli s death.
Didactic farce portrays politics and events of the time in a comedic way. The combination of farcical
elements such as Slapstick humor and Commedia Dell arte and the use of the alienation effect create a
didactic play, underlying the corruption in Italy revolving around the death of Pinelli.
Farce creates a humorous play where characters become involved involuntarily. Farcical elements
include sight gags, physical comedy, and general absurdity. Critics often dislike farce as it is believed
to be a low form of entertainment. The Maniac is primarily Fo s means of presenting farce in the play.
At the start of the play, the Maniac is speaking with Bertozzo in his office about the different kinds of
law when he exclaims, international law, jurisprudence, human rights legislation, common law,
ecclesiastical law, the offside law, LA Law, mother in law (7). The Maniac begins by saying laws that
the people would know. He then talks about the offside law which is a rule in soccer, LA Law which is
an American show, and finally mother in law which is a family member. These allusions create humor
the audience would recognize and build the Maniac s character as he uses farce to convey information.
Later in the play, the journalist is about to arrive, and the Superintendent says she cannot see the
judge. The Maniac quickly exclaims, I ll change character (55). He proceeds to change clothes,
wearing a false mustache and a black eye patch. This is situational irony as the audience knows of the
Maniac s ability to change character, while for those involved, this is the first time. His new
appearance creates humor as his outfit is absurd and later leads to an exchange with the investigator.
Farce also includes slapstick or physical comedy to further specific points while providing humor.

Essay about Jealousy in Shakespeare s Othello
Jealousy in Shakespeare s Othello
Othello features jealousy as the dominant motive for action and therefore just as reflected in real life
we bare witness to jealousy influencing the characters of Iago, Brabantio, Roderigo, and Othello. In
this essay I shall be attempting to examine this theme in depth drawing comparison between jealousy
and the consequential action.
The dominance of jealousy as the chief causative force of action in the drama is very obvious to most
critics. In William Shakespeare: The Tragedies, Paul A. Jorgensen exposes the main motivation in the
story:
In roundest terms, Othello is a story of raging sexual jealousy prompted apparently by the least
credible of motives. Othello has eloped with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Act 1 Scene 1 opens with an expression of jealousy: Roderigo is upbraiding Iago because of the
elopement of the object of his affections ?Desdemona with the Moor:
?Thou told?st me thou didst hold him in thy hate.?
Iago responds with an expression of jealousy, saying that he does indeed hate the general because he
?Nonsuits my mediators; for, ?Certes,? says he,
?I have already chose my officer.??
With both Roderigo and the ancient spurred on by jealousy, they storm the home of the senator,
Brabantio, and father of Desdemona in a vain effort to have him recover the missing girl. Brabantio is
very jealous of the man who has stolen his daughter because she has been his only companion and
help in the home:
?And what?s to come of my despised time
Is naught but bitterness.?
At the head of his mob, the senator accuses the general of having ?enchanted her? with his sorcery,
and accompanies him to the duke and council. After Othello admits
?That I have ta?en away this old man?s daughter,?
Desdemona confesses that ?here?s my husband,? and these testimonies seem to satisfy the Duke and
council. Consider that we have experienced three serious acts of jealousy in the first three scenes of
the play, as it has misguided Roderigo, Iago and Brabantio. The last dies as a result of his jealous
grief; Gratiano later says to Othello:
?Thy match was mortal to him, and pure grief / Shore his old thread in twain.?

All The Shah s Men
All the Shah s Men by Stephen Kinzer details the 1953 American orchestrated coup in Iran. Iran was
under British economic control, but as it modernized, Iranians began fighting for their own control.
Their fledgling democracy was working to modernize, until the UK and the US decided to interfere to
protect Britain s colonial holdings from Soviet influence. Because the US was not interested in
protecting a British business, British politicians emphasized the threat the USSR held to Iran, leading
to Americans inserting themselves into a nation s politics in which they had no place. They
successfully orchestrated a coup, however, the negative, long term, anti Western results overwhelm
any positive effect. All the Shah s Men by Stephen Kinzer paints a picture of the results of action
without adequate attention to future results.
All the Shah s Men details the Iranian coup of 1953. The British, as a colonial power, ran the Anglo
Iranian Oil Company, which provided much of the oil Britain needed during World War II. Not only
that, but it provided large amounts of revenue for the nation. Meanwhile, the Iranians were not
benefiting from the arrangement, as the British mistreated the Iranian workers and paid only a minute
amount of the profits to the Iranian government. A politician, Mossadegh, arose who would work to
nationalize Iranian oil production, taking away economic and political power from the British.
Obviously, the British were unwilling to accept this, and, incensed at

Psychodynamic Approach
The psychodynamic approach on the study of human behaviour is based around the work of Sigmund
Freud.
Freud believed that when people explainied their own behaviour to themselves or to someone else, we
rarely gave a true account of our motivation. However, this wasn t because people are trying to lie on
purpose. Freud suggested that the majority of human behaviour is influenced by things we are not
consciously aware of and that our deeper motivations are not seen but hidden away. Freud called the
part of the mind that we do know about and are aware of, the conscious and the part we don t know
about and are unaware of, the unconscious . Freud also said that between our conscious and
unconscious state, we have our middle, the preconscious. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Experience of Media Violence for Children
Media Violence By the time a child reaches the age of one, they see about 200,000 acts of violence on
television. (Nakaya, 3). The Media has been becoming more and more violent over the years. A poll in
an issue of Times Magazine, from 2005, showed that 66 percent of Americans think that there is an
abundant amount of graphic acts of violence on televisions (Nakaya, 18). People are exposed to
thousands of acts of violence through video games, television, and movies. Many studies show that
media violence increases violent behavior in in humans. Studies show, violent video games, and
graphic television have physiological effects on children. The government has very few regulations on
media violence. Some people believe the government shouldn t limit content because others might be
insulted by its material. Even though the government shouldn t censor the media, Media violence is
becoming a serious issue because it is becoming more violent, it makes people behave violently, and it
has little regulations. The regularity and asperity of media violence has dramatically increased over
the years. Media violence is such a broad topic, so we cannot simple get rid of it. People are exposed

A. Colonialism in North America
England s desire for economic gain and religious freedom sparked the beginning of their interest in
colonialism in America (Gouch, LeGuin, Walton, 1998). While some settlers came to America in
search of gold or other riches, the Puritans that settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony came to escape
religious persecution and have freedom to worship as they desired. In 1630, over a thousand Puritans
arrived, being led by a lawyer named John Winthrop. All English settlers were required to set up
charter system governments. This system allowed the settlers to organize ... Show more content on

The British, unwilling to give up their rule, even went as far as to demand that Colonist pay for the
protection of the British Army and Navy. The Colonist felt since they had no representation in the
British parliament, they owed nothing. When no agreement could be reached a revolution was
inevitable (Joes, 1996).
Another cause of the American Revolution was the desire of the colonists to have freedom of religion
and the determination of England that the colonist must remain true to the Church of England.
Puritans, a religious group who came to the colonies seeking freedom of religion, wanted to remain a
part of the Church of England, but develop their own style of worship. Another more radical religious
group, Separatists, wanted a complete break from the Church of England. The goal of both of both the
Puritans and the Separatists was to have the freedom to express religious beliefs without fear of
persecution by the church or government. England remained firm that the colonist must follow the
practice of the Church of England with no variation ( Annenberg Learner, 2013).
B2. Indian Independence Movement
The general cause of the Indian Independence Movement was India s desire for independence from
British, French and Portuguese Rule. The aim of the movement was Swaraj, a self governing India
(Sharma, 2005, p. 22). One, more specific, cause of the Indian Independence Movement took place in
1905 when the province of Bengal was divided into two provinces,

Economic Effects Of The Market Revolution
The major change in the American economy was people began to exchange goods rather than make
them for themselves. Especially, Western settlers in isolated areas needed ways to transport their
goods to distant markets. The Market Revolution was an economic transformation of America. It was
a dramatic change in labor and production, which made easy transportation and fast communication
across the country. There were many improvements occurred which included an improved production
of cotton, lowered transportation costs to make it easier to sell things, allowed women to go to work
outside, and protected contract rights.
The Market Revolution all started with the cotton gin, which was an important part of the revolution
beginning in 1815 of Eli Whitney. During the seventeenth century, Americans were in need of cotton
even though they had the ability to build textile factories. The planters grew cotton, but it had wasted
efforts of labors. It took a day of a slave of just separating one pound cotton. The cotton gin changed
all of this. It revolutionized agriculture making a cotton economy by speeding up the process of
removing cottonseeds from fibers, which allowed a labor to make fifty pounds of cotton per day and
farmers could plant cotton. By the middle of the nineteenth century, cotton had become a major export
crop in America and opening cotton production into new areas. The effects of the cotton gin
contributed greatly to industrialization included the import of slaves,

Anita Desai s Clear Light Of Day
Escapism in Anita Desai s Clear Light of Day
Clear Light of Day, written by Anita Desai and published in 1980, tells the story of the siblings of the
Das family living in Old Delhi. It tells the story of Bim, the eldest sister a history professor and
caretaker of Baba, their youngest, autistic brother. She is a spinster who seems to have been left
behind by everyone. Headstrong, intelligent and apparently sure of her choices, it seems that Bim has
had no desire to escape her life.
The novel also tells the story of Tara and of Raja, the two apparently more prosperous siblings, who
both manage to escape the bleak atmosphere of the house; Tara through her marriage to Bakul, and
Raja through his immersion in Urdu poetry and Islamic culture, his relationship with Hyder Ali, and
consequently, his moving away to Hyderabad and marriage to Benazir.
Escapism plays a very important role in the story of Anita Desai s Clear Light of Day. The focus of
this essay is to explore how this theme affects the relationship between Bim and Raja. Best friends and
partners in crime, Bim and Raja share a love of literature and poetry, and are the closest of the four
siblings. Eventually, however, Raja s admiration of Hyder Ali leads him to Urdu poetry and an interest
in Islamic culture, seeking an escape from the stifling, insipid atmosphere of his own home and life.
What seems to have started as scholarly interest, and initially even draws Bim s admiration, leads to
Raja s escape to Hyderabad to

Background My site of investigation is a dance studio, namely Fit Dance Studio, in Kowloon Bay. It
has been, without a second thought, chosen for my ethnographic research because I have been an
active participant over there recurrently for five years on a regular basis. I have been going to the
dance classes and joining regular parties with other participants, including dance tutors and students of
different ages and backgrounds from time to time. In this regard, my ethnographic data may sound and

The Apostle Research Paper
The original term apostle usually refers to the twelve men that Jesus called to carry the gospel to
spread the gospel to the world. These men traveled with Jesus during His earthly ministry. The
original twelve apostles were sent out to preach and teach as apostles (Orr 2). They also saw the
crucifixion and the resurrection. Jesus called His first two disciples by the Sea of Galilee. Peter and his
brother Andrew were both fishermen. In Matthew 4:19 Jesus said Follow me and I will make you
fishers of men (NKJV). He also called James and John who were the sons of Zebedee. Then after
passing a tax office, He saw a man named Matthew. He asked Matthew to follow Him. These people
are the apostles of Jesus: Simon Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip of Bethsaida, Thomas,
Bartholomew, Matthew, James, Simon (the Zealot), Judas, and Thaddaeus. Peter was the disciple that
Jesus chose to build His church. Peter ministered in Jerusalem but went to Judea when the persecution
began. The apostle John ministered with Peter in Jerusalem. When the persecution began he went to
Turkey and later Rome. He was arrested by the Emperor Domitian and was banished to the island of
Patmos, where he wrote the book of Revelations. Judas Iscariot was one of the original twelve

Toyota Motor Corporation s Production System
Abstract Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation that also manufactures
Lexus and Scion. Well known for being an industry leader in manufacturing, Toyota has been
aggressively cutting costs over the years. They managed to cut procurement costs of door handles by
40 percent. Then, by using the just in time (JIT) inventory system they were able to bring models into
production in only 12 months after the final design, compared to the average of 24 36 months in the
industry. Toyota continues to cut company costs by making car parts cheaper and lighter. However,
these cost saving parts diminished the quality of the cars. Vehicles started having reports of
acceleration and brake problems. Toyota announced of more than 11 million recalls on vehicles for
problems. After all the recalls, the company had to pay $48.8 million in fines. Toyota got carried away
in cutting costs and time into making the cars that they lost much more money than they saved. Case

Effects Of Urbanization On Food Supply And Human Security
McKinney s book discusses homogenization as the main effect of urbanization, arguing that major
cities homogenize the physical environment in their attempt to meet the narrow needs of human
beings without regard for indigenous species.McKinney identifies key challenges such as human
disconnection from the natural environment which is a disadvantage of urbanization. The strength of
this source lies in its relevance as it will provide sufficient information for the research topic with
regard to the effects and disadvantages of urbanization.
This book focuses attention on the socio economic and environmental effects of rapid urbanization
and population growth in the developing countries with particular reference to Africa. This source is
useful as the author analyzes the magnitude and causes of urbanization and considers the impact of
rapid urbanization on climate change, phenomena whose spiral effect extends to the future impact of
global warming, health, food security and environmental change. As climatic and environmental
effects of urbanization are most visible in major urban cities, the author also considers the
implications of urbanization on food supply and human security.
This article briefly explains the history of urbanization and its transition over the past decades. before
critically analyzing four mainstream theories of urbanization, their pros and cons. The authors take
into account the micro and macro spiral effects of urbanizationon society by analyzing

The Rights Of Women During The World Is Treated The Same,...
To start off, the very broad term of equality is the notion that every human being in the world is
treated the same, no matter their age, gender, class, or race. Comparing to other political systems,
democracy values equality more than any other as it involves the commitment in upholding equal
treatments between citizens. To measure the level of democracy in a territory in terms of associational
autonomy, one must observe the level of equality that is promoted in that country. Looking at any
state, minorities are primarily the ones discriminated against by their government and citizens. In
Tunisia, the minorities are women and as a result they were secluded in economic, political, and social
affairs. The period of time when women were mostly segregated in Tunisia was when the state was
under the possession of France. Women living in Tunisia during this period were mainly housewives
as they did not have much access to education and were required to wear veils in public. However,
once Tunisia received its independence in 1956 from France, the Personal Status Code was created by
the republic government which provided females several legal rights such as the right to divorce, the
right to receive an education, and the right to obtain an occupation. As the laws were implemented
over the years, women activists noticed that the legislation was too elusive and did not properly
outline the terms for equality. Due to this, women experienced discrimination in several areas such as

Killing Reagan By Bill O Reilly And Martin Dugard
Killing Reagan was wrote by Bill O Reilly and Martin Dugard as a part of their series to talk about the
deaths, assassination, and near deaths of certain historical people. O Reilly and Dugard write about the
events leading up to the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan including discussing the attempted
assassin, John Hinckley, and the events after up until his death. The authors present the viewpoint as if
one were there to witness the lives of the people in the book. Killing Reagan talks about the politics
during Reagan s life and presidency to tell about who Ronald Reagan was and his ideas that
influenced a presidency. Some things a reader may want to know before starting this book is a basic
idea of the events and politics of the twentieth century, especially those after WWII. Overall, it is easy
for just about anyone to understand.
Killing Reagan starts the prologue with the sentence The man who has one minute to live is no longer
confused (O Reilly and Dugard 1) as he discusses who is in the room with him, including his two kids,
Ron and Patti, and his wife, Nancy Reagan. The authors also talk about what caused his death,
dementia that started ten years ago that caused him to not make a public appearance in that time
period. The authors go into the first chapter discussing the winning debate that probably gave him the
presidency that happened a week before the election. The authors then talk about how former
President Carter won past debates against Gerald R.

All The Pretty Horses Research Paper
Guns and Cowboys: The end of an era Many recognize the classic image of the cowboy in an old
western movie: the fearless, stoic hero that stays calm in moments of crisis. In Cormac McCarthy s All
the Pretty Horses, readers witness the protagonist, John Grady Cole, attempt to revive this famous
archetype. Beginning as early as when the first pilgrims came to the new continent, Americans have
always had a desire to settle Native American lands. In the time that followed, the West became a sort
of proving ground for the Europeans and their decedents. During the nineteenth century, the image of
land being settled by men on horses, who literally took the law into their own hands through their
shotguns, became pervasive in the American mind. By ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

upper class upbringing, McCarthy dropped out of the University of Tennessee, couldn t hold a steady
job, and asked his first wife to support him while he wrote his first book, which consequently lead to
their divorce. Even after his writing earned him widespread acclaim, McCarthy still continued to live
in hotels, cut his own hair, and do his laundry at a Laundromat. After living in Spain where he became
fluent in the language, McCarthy moved to the Southwest where he has lived since the 1970s. During
an interview with The New York Times in 1992 Richard B. Woodward recorded that, McCarthy doesn
t write about places he hasn t visited, and he has made dozens of similar scouting forays to Texas,
New Mexico, Arizona and across the Rio Grande into Chihuahua, Sonora and Coahuila. The vast
blankness of the Southwest desert served as a metaphor for the nihilistic violence in his last novel,
Blood Meridian, published in 1985. And this unpopulated, scuffed up terrain again dominates the
background in All the Pretty Horses, which will appear next month from Knopf (Woodward). Other
prominent works by McCarthy include Suttree (1979), Blood Meridian (1985), No Country for Old
Men (2005), The Road (2006), and The Sunset Limited (2006): all of which take place in the

India s Fields Of Rai Block Of Sonepat District
ABSTRACT
A study was conducted in farmers fields of Rai block of Sonepat district, Haryana, India to study the
long term impact of two widely adopted resource conservation technologies (RCT s) namely bed
planting and zero tillage on structural properties of soils of recent alluvial plains of the river Yamuna.
Aggregate mean weight diameter by dry sieving and wet sieving (DS MWD and WS MWD) under
different RCT s were studied to compare structural condition of the soils under continuous use of these
technologies. Other important structural indices such as dispersion ratio (a measure of ease of
dispersion; DR), colloid moisture equivalent ration (a measure of ease of percolation; CMER), erosion
ratio (ER), stability index (SI), soil organic carbon (SOC), clay ratio (CR) were also studied to
monitor the susceptibility of soil to erosion in the study area. Results revealed that in the surveyed
villages under conventional tillage (CT), the mean (of 6 samples) magnitude of DR and ER were 0.58
and 0.82, respectively, and CMER was 1, which indicated the erodible nature of these soils. Analysis
of data of bed and conventional systems revealed that on an average, there was about 19.08 % increase
in SOC in bed planted system compared to conventional system. The decrease of DR, ER and CR
from 0.66, 0.52 and 4.25 under CT to 0.42, 0.28 and 2.38 under beds indicated reduced eroding
tendency of these soils under bed planting. Comparison of soil data of ZT and CT showed

Measurement Scales Paper

Measurement in Analysis can take on many forms, but in this case, these come in the form of
questionnaires. A questionnaire when not done correctly may not be able to obtain the information in
which the corporation may be seeking. There are in general four categories that these fall into.
Categorically, these include Nominal, Ordinal, Interval and Ratio Numbers. The essential goal of this
author is to explain to the utmost of authority of how these fit into questionnaires.
Attitude can play a part in the variables that make up these types of scales: from Nominal to Ratio.

The question is simply whether each object has more or less of this variable. When scaled, there will
be no information as to how much difference between objects (Aakar, Kumar and Day, 2007). Due to
lack of difference between objects, the basic arithmetic operations are limited to statistics such as the
median or mode (this does not include the mean) (Aakar, Kudler and Day, 2007). One example would
be to obtain the information sample of 1,000 surveyed consumers who ranked five brands of auto
manufacturer preferred based on quality assumption. The questionnaire may look similar as ranked
from Highest to Lowest with Second, Third, and Fourth all between (Aakar, Kudler and Day, 2007).
Where the Second quality will be categorized as the mode , the Third category is the median . There
will no means of categorizing a general mean because the differences in between ordinal scaled values
are not necessarily the same (Aakar, Kudler and Day, 2007). Another example of this type of scale
could be found in racing: dog, horse or car, that is they are found in a class standing (Aakar, Kudler
and Day, 2007).
Interval
The Interval scale represents the numbers used to rank objects which also represent equal increments
of the attribute being measured. In more discrete terms, it simply means differences can be compared.
The difference between 1 and 2 is the same as that found between 2 and 3,

The Organizational course at Concordia University Portland successfully helps individuals internalize
the concepts related to organizational development while guiding one make ethical and moral
decisions as a leader. Through completion of this course, one will come to the realization that being a
successful leader occurs through acquisition of certain traits. Individuals that are not fully equipped to
successfully lead cannot expect to lead effectively. Fullan (2011) lists the seven qualities of change
leaders in his book as; someone who actively participates, is resolute, who motivates, collaborates, a
learner, uses data correctly, and keeps it simple. All those qualities are important in being an effective
leader, however possessing all of those qualities requires one to be a leader who practices different

A Research Study On Global Variables
Above you see an extract from the log in page, showing the heavy dependence on $_SESSION
variables. These are required so much because they allow other pages to access the data. If I just used
local variables I d have no ability to transfer data between pages, and this is necessary to keep track of
things like who is logged in or if even anyone is logged in. All SQL queries come back as associative
arrays too, with each column entry being an element in the array, so they are very prominent.
There are many algorithms implemented in this project throughout to do various things, from checking
passwords securely to generating tables for the admin. I will analyse some of these at a later point.
Programming Techniques

The more difficult questions require more time since they are harder and will take longer. The time
setting adjusts the time defined by the difficulty slightly.
You can see what the one and two letter codes mean by looking at the getqcode function on page 4.
Parameter passing
A good example of parameter passing by reference is with the SQL queries, particularly the
connection and result. Consider the following:
$con2 is a connection variable that provides access to the MySQL database. This is therefore clearly
passed by reference as well as $r, the result since they can have their contents modified by a function
and then be used afterwards. On the other hand, in the example above (get_time), the variables $time
and $diff are passed by value. They are disconnected from the original when they get passed, changes
to them will not affect the original.
Programming practice
One of the most important things in programming is readability and code style in general. It is good if
your code runs efficiently and correctly but if anything ever goes wrong with it, it will be a nightmare
to deal with if the code isn t formatted or named correctly. I have therefore tried to give all variables
meaningful names so that if I ever look back over the code or make changes, I will know what each bit
does. Commenting is also quite important. An algorithm you understood when programming it may

This is an important period in Israel s history because the captivity and the return and restoration of
the Jewish nation were fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies.
When Solomon died in 931 B.C., the United Kingdom of Israel was split in two: 10 tribes in the North
formed Israel and the 2 remaining tribes in the South continued under the name of Judah. God
punished the Northern Kingdom for their idolatry and in 722 B.C. it was conquered by the Assyrians.
The people were taken into captivity and they never returned to their homeland. The Southern

The Stories Of Cinderella, Snow White, And Sleeping Beauty
Most of us grew up watching and reading the stories of Cinderella, Snow White and, Sleeping Beauty
all of which were produced by Disney. But what if I told you that the versions you grew up watching
and reading are far from the original versions depicted by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, better known as
the Brothers Grimm. In their tale of Cinderella there was no fairy godmother, the step sisters cut off
portions of their feet to fit into the slipper and none of the animals talked or sang, but rather plucked
out the step sister s eyes as punishment for the mistreatment of Cinderella. Which begs the question,
what inspired the brother s to write these types short stories, which are so not what is recognized today
as a fairy tale ? The rags to riches tale of Cinderella (the Brothers Grimm version) the maiden later
known as Cinderella goes from a beloved and cherished daughter, to a household slave after the death
of her mother and father s remarriage to a cruel step mother and two heartless step sisters. To which is
very similar to the Disney version most of us are familiar with today. The authors do a good job of
laying out the magical portion of the tale which was created through the tears she shed every over the
tree branch she planted at her mother s grave that flourished into a tree and produced a white bird at
each of her visits that granted her whatever she wished for.

Was Rockefeller A Robber Baron Or A Captain Of Industry
John D. Rockefeller: Robber Baron or Captain of Industry? John D. Rockefeller could be thought of
as both a robber baron and a captain of industry because he did many things throughout his career that
would make you believe this. In my opinion, Rockefeller was more of a captain of industry because he
did a lot of philanthropic work after his retirement from the oil business. Although, he did use illegal
and very unethical tactics in order to gain his wealth, and he completely ran his competitors out of
business. He would do anything to gain more fortune for himself. When people think of John D.

Rockefeller was a captain of industry because, unlike a robber baron who is ruthless in their business
practices, he was extremely generous when it came to money. He gave half a billion dollars, which is
more than ⅓ of his total net worth, to multiple different charities. Rockefeller did create an oil
monopoly, which is when a single company or group owns most of a market for a certain product they
are trying to sell, or a company that completely dominates a particular industry. There are some
advantages to creating a monopoly, like the avoidance of duplicated products being sold. They are also
able to avoid competition and be more efficient with the products they are selling because they can
afford to have the latest machinery and technology to help them. There are also some disadvantages.
Consumers can be charged higher prices for lower quality goods, and the lack of competition could
also lead to lower quality goods. Some would say that this is very greedy because monopolies are
usually associated with robber barons, but I think Rockefeller was an exception to this. As a captain of
industry, Rockefeller was in no way greedy with the money he made from his oil

were now over. And your ancestor, Dominique Fai Chen, became what in what year? Father s deep
voice asked. Slytherin head of house﹘1895, mumbled Elizabeth, looking out the window casually.
And I was named after whom? asked Father, his cool voice coming closer. Snap. Alexander the owl of
Dominique? And Dominique, who we just talked about, replied Elizabeth sarcastically, not knowing
the answer. She looked out the window again and mumbled, Alexander Dominique Chen. Wanting to
see what he would do, Elizabeth looked at Father out of the corner of her eye. Father flicked his wand,
making the curtains snap over the window, and glared at Elizabeth. Re read this, this, and this ﹘he
handed her three books, two of which were journals and one of which was her family tree﹘ and go to
your room! Elizabeth nodded, and hurried out of her family s library. She liked the library; though it
was a small room with only a few rows of books, it was bright, and it had gateways to other worlds
and other lives﹘otherwise knows as books. But the fact that it held so many books about her

By The Waters Of Babylon
Being brave and breaking societal norms and being different, even at the expense of personal
reputation, is worth it. By the Waters of Babylon by Stephen Vincent Benét is a short story about the
journey and discoveries of a boy named John. John is a priest (and the son of a priest) in a primitive
society. In By the Waters of Babylon, John journeys east, even though it is forbidden to do so, and
finds a city that we later learn is New York. This leads to several revelations for John. John is brave,
and breaks societal norms, and is rewarded with knowledge that can help his entire civilisation. Being
brave and breaking norms worth it.
John is brave and breaks norms when he ventures east. In doing so, he risks be ostracised by his
people. He is also taught that he will be killed by the gods if he ventures east. This shows John is very
brave and courageous, as he risks many things when he goes east. This bravery is represented in the
text by the Ou dis sun (Hudson) river. John s culture believes that you will be destroyed by the gods if
you cross the river. The river is a definitive line, a mark in the ground. It is like a mental wall. Yet
John summons the courage to cross the river. The river crossing represents that John is being brave
and different. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He learns that their were people in the past with great technology, not gods. He realises that much of
the information he has been told by his father and the rest of his society is simply not true. To come to
this revelation, he had to stop believing what he had heard his entire life. He chose to break from the
societal norm, he chose to be brave, and thus was rewarded with knowledge and truth about the

inspiration in everyday things. They were getting inspiration from consumer goods and mass media.
They began with bold colors, and they also adopted the silk screening. They also established and idea
were there work had its own originality. Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were very aware of the

Theme Of Sunset Boulevard
SUNSET BOULEVARD
Institution
Name
The movie Sunset Boulevard written by Billy Wilder highlights the screenwriter s potential of making
a reflexive film more than focusing on the style and aesthetics. The movie revolves around the life of a
fallen silent movie star, Norma Desmond, and her fame delusions. With the introduction of the sound
in the film industry, she is brushed off and forgotten not only by her associates but also by her dear
fans. This lifestyle change caused her to be drawn into the world of superstardom and luxury that she
developed for herself in mind. Her universe involved her mansion full of photos framed of her
memories and herself in her past. She identifies very strong with her condition that once it is ... Show

The Wilder s Sunset Boulevard wasn t only scaring due to the controversial subject matter alone, but
also due to the realistic casting the leading roles. Swanson Gloria was astounding in the part of
Desmond Norma because of her real life skill with her faded career. Similarly, Stroheim s career also
diminished after the twenties, as it prepared him for his role that undertook as the silent film director
that turned the butler in the film. The most interesting idea of this life like cast was the chemistry
between these two role characters due to their relationships of the past

Malignant Hyperthermia
Malignant Hyperthermia
Malignant Hyperthermia is primarily thought to be an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that
causes a hypermetabolic state after administration of volatile anesthetics. When a patient is under
anesthesia, the muscles are usually relaxed, but when a patient is experiencing Malignant
Hyperthermia crisis, certain IV anesthesia causes the opposite effect. Most inhaled anesthetics other
than nitrous oxide, cause or trigger Malignant Hyperthermia. More specifically, the anesthetic agents:
Halothane, Chloroform, and Succinylcholine. The genic condition of Malignant Hyperthermia only
becomes apparent when a patient is exposed to certain anesthetics such as halothane, which causes
muscle rigidity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An increase in calcium inside muscle cells activates processes that generate heat and production of
excess acid, leading to a continual increase in body temperature and then acidosis.
Our cardiac muscle remains unaffected in those with Malignant Hyperthermia because this condition
is within the skeletal muscles. Here, the brain sends electrical signals that eventually reach the calcium
pump and cause a domino effect. There are minimal proven theories about Malignant Hyperthermia s
effect on the cardiac muscle by professionals; however, what is known, is that during a Malignant
Hyperthermia crisis, there are increased abnormal heart rhythms frequent in this disorder. These
arrhythmias are often attributed to the damage made directly to the cardiac muscle.
Malignant Hyperthermia can be fatal by causing stable blood pressure to drop tremendously and heart
rates to rise excessively. Malignant Hyperthermia can also cause kidney and liver failure. Because
Malignant Hyperthermia causes the muscle cells to deteriorate, releasing an excessive amount of
potassium, acid, and protein into the blood, it disturbs the body s chemical balance. The kidney s shut
down which prevents the body from producing urine; the liver ceases to detoxify the body s waste
products, and the heart fails to pump regularly.
During a Malignant

Simplicity By William Zinsser
William Zinsser is an American writer who wrote an informational guide to writing. He made a
decision to revise a specific chapter called Simplicity. In the year 1980, the first version of Simplicity
was created, then came 1998 followed up by 2006. In the first version, 1980, Zinsser created a long
and wordy paper. He used specific examples but included details that were unnecessary. This is ironic
because the paper is about how writers can write unnecessary words and phrases creating complicated
sentences. He was not inclusive of gender, naming men as writers and only using wives as examples
of distraction. This draft had a complete count of 20 paragraphs. The 1998 version had few changes
when compared to the 1980 s version. There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Paragraph 2 2006) He changed viscous language to clotted language. This makes sense, he used a
more commonly used word to this time period making it readable to a younger generation of readers
and writers. (Paragraph 2 2006) He took out on Christmas Eve or any other eve , this made sense
because it was an extra unneeded detail. The sentence made complete sense just as what father or
mother can put together a child s toy from the instructions on the box? . In paragraph 4 he changed
what was originally the president of a major university in versions from 1980 and 98 to the president
of my university in the 2006 version, making a personal connection with the reader. (Paragraph 8
2006) He completely redid the paragraph. In the 1980 and 1994 version, the 8th paragraph was
completely unneeded and included a story that seemed unrelated to the topic of writing. It started as I
love to be alone . The 2006 version of this paragraph wasn t completely off topic from the original. I
still believe this paragraph isn t needed, even with the shortening. With the 2006 version he has taken
out the he s and switched to they . This allows women to feel included, making it more likely for a
female to enjoy the writing. It felt noninclusive in the first two versions. In the newest version
(paragraph 10) he included devices relevant to that time period. Instead of saying he, he said a man or
woman could be distracted by many forces

  • 2. Gender Stereotypes In Nickel And Dimed In a Low Wage World You can t judge a book by it s cover . Every day our parents tell us as children that we cannot judge things based on the first glances that we see. However, people in our society today have filled their heads with stereotypes in order to judge people and their abilities. And when hiring employees, stereotypes and first glances is all an employer sees and therefore care about. In her book, Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich proves that a person s race and gender have a massive influence on the type of low wage work a person can find, due to the stereotypes that are associated with gender and race in our society today. Ehrenreich exploits the abuse that takes on in the workplace toward minorities, which ironically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every establishment that she applies would rather hire her as a waitress because she is white and speaks English. When applying to Hearthside, Ehrenreich even downgrades herself in order to attain a job as a housekeeper. I mutter about being woefully out of practice as a waitress, but he s already on to the uniform (Ehrenreich, 16). However, even though the author attempts to prove she would not make a good waitress, her employer is already stubborn and thinks that she is more worthy as a server as opposed to a housekeeper. So why did her boss make her a waitress when she clearly wanted to be a housekeeper? Her boss made her a waitress simply, because he used stereotypes to judge the author. Therefore, her boss only saw a white woman who was better equipped with serving skills even though Ehrenreich believed she had better housekeeping skills. Now, sadly if a fluent English speaking Hispanic applied to the same job, she would only be hired as a housekeeper. In fact, she would be rejected as a waitress for the same reason that the author couldn t become a housekeeper; the of color her skin. In today s society, when someone thinks of a hotel maid, they think of a Latin woman who isn t fluent in English. It is this very stereotype that affects the type of job a low wage job a person receives simply because of the color of their skin and not their personal abilities. Factors are those things that influence a person in his field of work, studies and his way of living and life. Steve Jobs is called the Silicon Valley Pioneer and the author of unique leadership and idea. • 4. The Chemistry Of Organic Contaminants Over the past ten years, the Institute of Gas Technology, now Gas Technology Institute (GTI), USA and others have conducted research on the bioremediation of organic contaminants in soil. Most of this work has been associated with remediation of former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) sites, soils from industrial areas and oil production areas have also been studied. The results have shown that: (1) organic contaminants are biodegraded by indigenous soil microorganisms to a concentration that no longer decreases, or that decreases very slowly, with continued treatment; (2) reductions below this concentration are limited by the availability of the contaminants to the microorganisms; and (3) the residual contaminants that remain after biological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bacterial enzymes will catalyze the insertion of oxygen into the hydrocarbon so that the molecule can subsequently be consumed by cellular metabolism. Because of this oxygen is one of the most important requirements for the biodegradation of oil. Table 1 shows the list of some of the microorganisms which are involved in the bioremediation of oil contamination. Microbial Seeding Oil degrading microorganisms seem to be ubiquitous, with their number typically limited by the hydrocarbon supply (Namazi et al., 2008). Another approach is to add exogenous microorganisms with known degradative activities, either natural isolates or engineered (Narasimhan et al., 1983). Seeding involves the introduction of allochthonous microorganisms into the natural environment for the purpose of increasing the rate or extent, or both of biodegradation of pollutants. The rationale for this approach is that the autochthonous microorganisms may not be capable of degrading the wide range of potential substrates present in complex mixtures such as petroleum (Raghavan, 1998). Terrestrial ecosystems differ from aquatic ecosystems in that soils contain higher concentrations of organic and inorganic matter and generally, large number of microorganisms and are more variable in terms of physical and chemical conditions (Bossert et al., 1984). The presence of indigenous microorganisms which are highly adapted to a particular environment would negatively influence the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Vampire Effect Of Dracula Not many people would think that they can be compared to Count Dracula. Considered to be one of the most well known monsters of all time, Count Dracula sucks the blood of his victims, which would ultimately lead to their death. While this seems like a very unique example, it can be applied to nearly every person, specifically in the college stetting. This phenomenon that can be linked to this monster is called the vampire effect. First used in the book ______, this term refers to the what happens in social groups due to different personality types that were caused by a difference in economic background. Set in a college dormitory, chapter 4 of the book discusses how there is a difference in the social lives of students who are quiet versus students who are more outgoing. Students who were shy were generally ignored and did not seem to partake in many social activities. While Armstrong and Hamilton suggest that the Vampire Effect arises due to the social students knowingly ignoring and rejecting the shyer students, that is not the case. The cycle through which the effect takes place starts with self comparison due to economic status, envy, and self blame, and results in anxiety and self isolation. Although this is done unintentionally, consciously known factors such debt and class also play a role in the process. As Armstrong and Hamilton describe the social isolates , Others treated the quieter roommate as sort of a sidekick or an invisible appendage (105). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The mission involves infiltrating the Russian consulate but this game is no Splinter Cell. Set in an alternate reality where the Cold War is still raging, Polyblank must deal with robots, spies and some of the strangest gadgets ever seen in a game. The creators cite comedy films such as Airplane and Naked Gun as major influences on the gameplay so if you are expecting any type of seriousness from Jazzpunk you are in for a shock. I strongly suggest that you actually ignore your mission objective for as long as possible and explore the environments otherwise you will miss out on some of the best elements that the game has to offer. What I love about Jazzpunk is that it is totally unpredictable. As you wander around the levels and interact with the environment you never know what is going to happen next. Pixar s New Man definition has evolved from the original definition of what it means to be male and have masculine qualities which escapes the rhetoric of masculinity(a term coined by Kimmel) which if incorporated into modern society would lessen negative events that happen in the world. When speaking of negative events that covers all damaging behavior that comes from following what C.J. Pascoe explains in Dude, You re a Fag : Adolescent Masculinity and the Fag Discourse . In Pascoe s work he describes the way in which men treat each other to diminish each other s manhood. When introduced to the world, Pixar s New Man would be empowered by equality and would not demand power as well as leadership but would find strength in being a part of a team. • 9. Understanding The Chinese Culture Of A Chinese Patient Many health care professionals think that if patients are just treated with respect, then cultural issues will be avoided. That statement is not the correct. Five points of area that affect nursing care when taking care of a Chinese patient, are the cultural beliefs with medical treatments, who and when to discuss the prognosis and medical treatment to, dietary beliefs, pregnancies beliefs, and death and dying. Many Chinese people believe in traditional Chinese medical treatments, and if the doctors and nurses disregard their beliefs, then that could lead to mistrust. Chinese people may try traditional approaches first, and then seek medical care if they fail. Communication barriers may delay patients from getting medical treatment. Cross cultural communication skills are extremely important to avoid miscommunication. A couple accommodations needed in nursing care would be to take some extra time to build a rapport with the patient before discussing any medical issues. Recognize how the Chinese culture views doctors and nurses, and encourage the patient to ask questions, and give them a chance to answer the questions. In the Chinese culture, when the patient is slow to respond to a question, or seems to be hesitant, it is simply a sign that respect is being given to the person that is asking the question (Cross Cultural Communications for Healthcare Professionals, 2015). Writing between the Harlem Renaissance and Post Modernism is very similar in that they both address social issues, from racism to self harm. The Harlem Renaissance poems, The Negro Speaks of Rivers and I, Too can be compared to the Post Modernist poems Cut and Manhattan Buddha through the use of figurative language and subject material. In both stories Cut by Sylvia Plath and I, Too by Langston Hughes, they address serious issues. In Cut a girl finds joy in cutting her thumb instead of an onion (Plath 2). Self harm is a serious issue in today s society. Plath does a good job at portraying the way the girl enjoys inflicting pain on herself and admires the cut. The variances are useful in determining the overall project health and status. Schedule Variance (SV): The Schedule Variance indicates a value which is a measure of how much the project is either ahead or behind at a given point in time. For any given point in time, once the EV and PV are known the SV can easily be calculated. The formula for SV is quite simply: SV = EV PV. Here a positive value indicates that the project is ahead at the current point in time and a negative value would indicate the opposite that a project is behind at the current point in time. • 15. Analysis Of Accidental Death Of An Anarchist In Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo, farce is prevalent throughout the play. Fo sought to recreate traditional farce and the comedic effect it creates. In Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Fo succeeded in creating Didactic Farce, combining comedic values of traditional farce with a rage of injustice. Fo believed farce to be the most effective way to provoke thought about Pinelli s death. Didactic farce portrays politics and events of the time in a comedic way. The combination of farcical elements such as Slapstick humor and Commedia Dell arte and the use of the alienation effect create a didactic play, underlying the corruption in Italy revolving around the death of Pinelli. Farce creates a humorous play where characters become involved involuntarily. Farcical elements include sight gags, physical comedy, and general absurdity. Critics often dislike farce as it is believed to be a low form of entertainment. The Maniac is primarily Fo s means of presenting farce in the play. At the start of the play, the Maniac is speaking with Bertozzo in his office about the different kinds of law when he exclaims, international law, jurisprudence, human rights legislation, common law, ecclesiastical law, the offside law, LA Law, mother in law (7). The Maniac begins by saying laws that the people would know. He then talks about the offside law which is a rule in soccer, LA Law which is an American show, and finally mother in law which is a family member. These allusions create humor the audience would recognize and build the Maniac s character as he uses farce to convey information. Later in the play, the journalist is about to arrive, and the Superintendent says she cannot see the judge. The Maniac quickly exclaims, I ll change character (55). He proceeds to change clothes, wearing a false mustache and a black eye patch. This is situational irony as the audience knows of the Maniac s ability to change character, while for those involved, this is the first time. His new appearance creates humor as his outfit is absurd and later leads to an exchange with the investigator. Farce also includes slapstick or physical comedy to further specific points while providing humor. While still acting as Mark Weeny, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Iran was under British economic control, but as it modernized, Iranians began fighting for their own control. Their fledgling democracy was working to modernize, until the UK and the US decided to interfere to protect Britain s colonial holdings from Soviet influence. Because the US was not interested in protecting a British business, British politicians emphasized the threat the USSR held to Iran, leading to Americans inserting themselves into a nation s politics in which they had no place. They successfully orchestrated a coup, however, the negative, long term, anti Western results overwhelm any positive effect. The British, as a colonial power, ran the Anglo Iranian Oil Company, which provided much of the oil Britain needed during World War II. People are exposed to thousands of acts of violence through video games, television, and movies. Many studies show that media violence increases violent behavior in in humans. Studies show, violent video games, and graphic television have physiological effects on children. The government has very few regulations on media violence. Some people believe the government shouldn t limit content because others might be insulted by its material. Even though the government shouldn t censor the media, Media violence is becoming a serious issue because it is becoming more violent, it makes people behave violently, and it has little regulations. The regularity and asperity of media violence has dramatically increased over the years. Media violence is such a broad topic, so we cannot simple get rid of it. Colonialism in North America England s desire for economic gain and religious freedom sparked the beginning of their interest in colonialism in America (Gouch, LeGuin, Walton, 1998). While some settlers came to America in search of gold or other riches, the Puritans that settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony came to escape religious persecution and have freedom to worship as they desired. In 1630, over a thousand Puritans arrived, being led by a lawyer named John Winthrop. All English settlers were required to set up charter system governments. The British, unwilling to give up their rule, even went as far as to demand that Colonist pay for the protection of the British Army and Navy. The Colonist felt since they had no representation in the British parliament, they owed nothing. When no agreement could be reached a revolution was inevitable (Joes, 1996). Another cause of the American Revolution was the desire of the colonists to have freedom of religion and the determination of England that the colonist must remain true to the Church of England. Puritans, a religious group who came to the colonies seeking freedom of religion, wanted to remain a part of the Church of England, but develop their own style of worship. Another more radical religious group, Separatists, wanted a complete break from the Church of England. The goal of both of both the Puritans and the Separatists was to have the freedom to express religious beliefs without fear of persecution by the church or government. England remained firm that the colonist must follow the practice of the Church of England with no variation ( Annenberg Learner, 2013). B2. • 22. Economic Effects Of The Market Revolution The major change in the American economy was people began to exchange goods rather than make them for themselves. Especially, Western settlers in isolated areas needed ways to transport their goods to distant markets. The Market Revolution was an economic transformation of America. It was a dramatic change in labor and production, which made easy transportation and fast communication across the country. There were many improvements occurred which included an improved production of cotton, lowered transportation costs to make it easier to sell things, allowed women to go to work outside, and protected contract rights. The Market Revolution all started with the cotton gin, which was an important part of the revolution beginning in 1815 of Eli Whitney. During the seventeenth century, Americans were in need of cotton even though they had the ability to build textile factories. The planters grew cotton, but it had wasted efforts of labors. It took a day of a slave of just separating one pound cotton. The cotton gin changed all of this. It revolutionized agriculture making a cotton economy by speeding up the process of removing cottonseeds from fibers, which allowed a labor to make fifty pounds of cotton per day and farmers could plant cotton. By the middle of the nineteenth century, cotton had become a major export crop in America and opening cotton production into new areas. • 23. Anita Desai s Clear Light Of Day Escapism in Anita Desai s Clear Light of Day Clear Light of Day, written by Anita Desai and published in 1980, tells the story of the siblings of the Das family living in Old Delhi. It tells the story of Bim, the eldest sister a history professor and caretaker of Baba, their youngest, autistic brother. She is a spinster who seems to have been left behind by everyone. Headstrong, intelligent and apparently sure of her choices, it seems that Bim has had no desire to escape her life. The novel also tells the story of Tara and of Raja, the two apparently more prosperous siblings, who both manage to escape the bleak atmosphere of the house; Tara through her marriage to Bakul, and Raja through his immersion in Urdu poetry and Islamic culture, his relationship with Hyder Ali, and consequently, his moving away to Hyderabad and marriage to Benazir. Escapism plays a very important role in the story of Anita Desai s Clear Light of Day. The focus of this essay is to explore how this theme affects the relationship between Bim and Raja. Best friends and partners in crime, Bim and Raja share a love of literature and poetry, and are the closest of the four siblings. Eventually, however, Raja s admiration of Hyder Ali leads him to Urdu poetry and an interest in Islamic culture, seeking an escape from the stifling, insipid atmosphere of his own home and life. To start off, the very broad term of equality is the notion that every human being in the world is treated the same, no matter their age, gender, class, or race. Comparing to other political systems, democracy values equality more than any other as it involves the commitment in upholding equal treatments between citizens. To measure the level of democracy in a territory in terms of associational autonomy, one must observe the level of equality that is promoted in that country. Looking at any state, minorities are primarily the ones discriminated against by their government and citizens. In Tunisia, the minorities are women and as a result they were secluded in economic, political, and social affairs. The period of time when women were mostly segregated in Tunisia was when the state was under the possession of France. Women living in Tunisia during this period were mainly housewives as they did not have much access to education and were required to wear veils in public. However, once Tunisia received its independence in 1956 from France, the Personal Status Code was created by the republic government which provided females several legal rights such as the right to divorce, the right to receive an education, and the right to obtain an occupation. As the laws were implemented over the years, women activists noticed that the legislation was too elusive and did not properly outline the terms for equality. India s Fields Of Rai Block Of Sonepat District ABSTRACT A study was conducted in farmers fields of Rai block of Sonepat district, Haryana, India to study the long term impact of two widely adopted resource conservation technologies (RCT s) namely bed planting and zero tillage on structural properties of soils of recent alluvial plains of the river Yamuna. Aggregate mean weight diameter by dry sieving and wet sieving (DS MWD and WS MWD) under different RCT s were studied to compare structural condition of the soils under continuous use of these technologies. Other important structural indices such as dispersion ratio (a measure of ease of dispersion; DR), colloid moisture equivalent ration (a measure of ease of percolation; CMER), erosion ratio (ER), stability index (SI), soil organic carbon (SOC), clay ratio (CR) were also studied to monitor the susceptibility of soil to erosion in the study area. Results revealed that in the surveyed villages under conventional tillage (CT), the mean (of 6 samples) magnitude of DR and ER were 0.58 and 0.82, respectively, and CMER was 1, which indicated the erodible nature of these soils. Analysis of data of bed and conventional systems revealed that on an average, there was about 19.08 % increase in SOC in bed planted system compared to conventional system. The decrease of DR, ER and CR from 0.66, 0.52 and 4.25 under CT to 0.42, 0.28 and 2.38 under beds indicated reduced eroding tendency of these soils under bed planting. Malignant Hyperthermia Malignant Hyperthermia Malignant Hyperthermia is primarily thought to be an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that causes a hypermetabolic state after administration of volatile anesthetics. When a patient is under anesthesia, the muscles are usually relaxed, but when a patient is experiencing Malignant Hyperthermia crisis, certain IV anesthesia causes the opposite effect. Most inhaled anesthetics other than nitrous oxide, cause or trigger Malignant Hyperthermia. More specifically, the anesthetic agents: Halothane, Chloroform, and Succinylcholine. The genic condition of Malignant Hyperthermia only becomes apparent when a patient is exposed to certain anesthetics such as halothane, which causes muscle rigidity. ... An increase in calcium inside muscle cells activates processes that generate heat and production of excess acid, leading to a continual increase in body temperature and then acidosis. Our cardiac muscle remains unaffected in those with Malignant Hyperthermia because this condition is within the skeletal muscles. Here, the brain sends electrical signals that eventually reach the calcium pump and cause a domino effect. There are minimal proven theories about Malignant Hyperthermia s effect on the cardiac muscle by professionals; however, what is known, is that during a Malignant Hyperthermia crisis, there are increased abnormal heart rhythms frequent in this disorder. These arrhythmias are often attributed to the damage made directly to the cardiac muscle. Malignant Hyperthermia can be fatal by causing stable blood pressure to drop tremendously and heart rates to rise excessively. Malignant Hyperthermia can also cause kidney and liver failure. Because Malignant Hyperthermia causes the muscle cells to deteriorate, releasing an excessive amount of potassium, acid, and protein into the blood, it disturbs the body s chemical balance. The kidney s shut down which prevents the body from producing urine; the liver ceases to detoxify the body s waste products, and the heart fails to pump regularly. During a Malignant ... • 45. Simplicity By William Zinsser William Zinsser is an American writer who wrote an informational guide to writing. He made a decision to revise a specific chapter called Simplicity. In the year 1980, the first version of Simplicity was created, then came 1998 followed up by 2006. In the first version, 1980, Zinsser created a long and wordy paper. He used specific examples but included details that were unnecessary. This is ironic because the paper is about how writers can write unnecessary words and phrases creating complicated sentences. He was not inclusive of gender, naming men as writers and only using wives as examples of distraction. This draft had a complete count of 20 paragraphs. The 1998 version had few changes when compared to the 1980 s version. There ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Paragraph 2 2006) He changed viscous language to clotted language. This makes sense, he used a more commonly used word to this time period making it readable to a younger generation of readers and writers. (Paragraph 2 2006) He took out on Christmas Eve or any other eve , this made sense because it was an extra unneeded detail. The sentence made complete sense just as what father or mother can put together a child s toy from the instructions on the box? . In paragraph 4 he changed what was originally the president of a major university in versions from 1980 and 98 to the president of my university in the 2006 version, making a personal connection with the reader. (Paragraph 8 2006) He completely redid the paragraph. In the 1980 and 1994 version, the 8th paragraph was completely unneeded and included a story that seemed unrelated to the topic of writing. It started as I love to be alone . The 2006 version of this paragraph wasn t completely off topic from the original. I still believe this paragraph isn t needed, even with the shortening. With the 2006 version he has taken out the he s and switched to they . This allows women to feel included, making it more likely for a female to enjoy the writing. It felt noninclusive in the first two versions. In the newest version (paragraph 10) he included devices relevant to that time period. Instead of saying he, he said a man or woman could be distracted by many forces ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
