SWOT analysis1
Home Depot is credited with having revolutionized the American home improvement industry. Since
the recession, the company has witnessed phenomenal growth with the stock price growing by over
270% in the last five years alone. With services encompassing Do It Yourself, Do It For Me, and
Professional (Pro) customers, Home Depot has managed to carve its way to being the industry leader
with an ~27% share. In this note, we analyze Home Depot s business using the SWOT analysis to
assess Home Depot s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Using this, we look at what
might be in store for Home Depot going forward. Trefis Team, Oct 6, 2015 Strengths Leadership:
Home Depot s top strength lies in its leadership. In spite of being highly dependent on macroeconomic
factors for success, the retailer managed to stand its ground during the recession. When revenues were
declining at an annual rate of 7 8% between 2008 and 2010, Home Depot did not let EPS numbers dip
below the $1.37 figure that was recorded in fiscal 2008. Home Depot s focus on cost saving and
productivity enhancing strategies under the leadership of former CEO Frank Blake was instrumental
in seeing the company through the global meltdown. Clearly, Home Depot has survived one of the
worst economic situations and has a number of strategies up its sleeve that could

Adolf Hitler As A Secondary Source
It is evident that the source is a secondary source because it has not been alternated in any way and
was written by the author in this era. It can be seen that the author is no other than JOHN CAI
BENJAMIN WEAVER where this source was produced on the 16 of May 2011. The purpose of this
source is to highlight the good and evil things Hitler did behind his people s backs and who was
instrumental in adopting the beliefs for nationalism in Germany. It is clear that Adolf Hitler was
instrumental in adopting nationalism into Germany with the rest of the country believing and
following in also becoming nationalists. The reason for the people of Germany seeing hope from in

Symphony 3 And Symphony 5 Comparison
In this essay, I will discuss two specific symphonies, Symphony No.3 and Symphony No.5, which are
composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 1827) was a German composer
that stood out as one of the most famous and influential composers, in both Classical era and in the
entire history of music. Beethoven was born in a family of talented musicians, both of his father and
grandfather. He composed nine symphonies, thirty five piano sonatas, in which thirty two are
numbered, ten violin sonatas, sixteen string quartets, an opera and two mass. From all of his works,
nine of his symphonies are greatly known by people, and each of them all masterpieces. Symphony
No.3 and Symphony No.5 are the most famous symphonies, and these are what I m going to discuss.
Both of the symphony have four movements. The first movement of both symphonies is Allegro con
brio, which means very fast and lively. This only defines the tempo and liveliness are similar in both
opening of the symphonies. Also, like most first movements of all Classical symphonies, the first
movement is written in the structure of a sonata form. The form typically consists of an exposition,
development, recapitulation, and coda. Although they are alike, there s still having ... Show more

In Symphony No.5, the third movement is in ternary form. The movement opens soft and slow and the
liveliness has not awakened until the whole orchestra gradually goes into a full crescendo and replays
the four note motive again. Contrary to Symphony No.5, the quick crescendo in strings then followed
by flutes almost instantly sprang the scherzo of Eroica into its liveliness. As one can easily notice,
almost everything is played in staccato for Eroica. In both of these symphonies, Beethoven makes use
of many crescendos and very commonly climaxed them off by the loud sounding of

Slavery in Ancient Greece and Rome Essay
Slavery was the practice of taking a human being and making them do the work of another by force.
This was practiced through out the ancient world and especially in Rome and Greece. Slaves were
nothing more than just property to the ancient peoples. They didn t have the rights of citizens nor were
they able to do what they want in most cases. Slaves had many tasks that they had to do, many of
which included taking care of the masters house and kids, cooking and cleaning that house, herding
the cattle for the farming families, being guards for some prisons, fighting for entertainment of the
masses, and more common was sexual activities with the slaves. The most common use of a slave was
to have the around the house to do common tasks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The owners could do with the slaves what they wished, be it sexual favors or they could beat them at
will. Beating a slave though was not usually the best thing that an owner of slaves could do because
they didn t want to damage their property. To get a slave to work hard wasn t that difficult most of the
time, all the owner had to do was refrain from beating and instead be nice to them. In Rome some
slaves were offered freedom if they met certain criteria of the owner. After earning their freedom they
were given citizenship in the city. This gave the slaves a reason to work hard, something to look
forward to. Although slaves worked mainly inside of the house there were owners who used them for
other reasons also. Slaves are living tools this is Aristotle defining what slaves are, and this is what
they were used as by everyone, inside the house and out of it. Almost everyone in the ancient world
had a slave or two, the only exception was with the poorest families. There was even slaves that
owned their own slaves, usually only one of the opposite sex though so that they could have some
semblance of a family. Pliny, a governor of a Roman province wrote to emperor Trajan asking if he
should use the slaves as guards in a local prison or use soldiers or to mix them both in there. Pliny
obviously trusted his slaves enough if he was willing

The Importance Of Life In Captivity For Animals
Life in captivity for animals is comparable in some situations to humans living inside of a prison. The
restrictions that are imposed on these animals while in captivity are unbearable living conditions that
affect the animal both mentally and physically. The animals understand that this is not their home
which leads to the breakdown of their psyche. One example of this comes from a zoo in the United
Kingdom. In the year 1979, the Bristol Zoo gained a new animal which would become one of their
biggest attractions. Misha the male polar bear caught the eye of the public with his unusual and odd
behavior. Researchers that studied animal rights in the late twentieth century linked this behavior to
Misha s enclosure at the zoo. Researchers came to the conclusion that the prison like living conditions
that Misha encountered was the cause of his psychotic appearance. The public had described him as
looking like a beast who was breaking down as a result of the captivity instead of an average polar
bear in a zoo. The zoo was able to view Misha through surveillance during this entire process, similar
to humans living in a prison or an asylum. According to the article by Andrew Flack, Following media
attention from animal rights organizations and the media between 1985 and the early 1990s, Misha s
psychotic appearance in a repeatedly evoked image of the prisons and asylums of the past, where
surveillance, spectacle, and suffering collided to alter the natures of the beasts within

Handmaids Tale and 1984
How far is language a tool of oppression in The Handmaid s Tale and Nineteen Eighty Four ?
Most dystopian novels contain themes of corruption and oppression, therefore in both The Handmaid s
Tale and Nineteen Eighty Four language is obviously used as a form of the states control, enabling
dystopian leaders to remain in power by manipulating language to restrict free thought. Orwell and
Atwood have utilized language as a key tool of oppression throughout their novels. The use of
language is mostly repressive, language can also be seen as liberating, and used as an act of rebellion,
which the state wishes to eliminate.
The novel Nineteen Eighty Four contains a world in which language is being systematically corrupted.

The Ministry of peace concerned itself with war , The Ministry of Truth dedicated itself to destroying
the truth and The Ministry of Love was described as frightening with gorilla faced guards. This brings
forth the idea that the state are trying to subtly manipulate society however they are a threat. In
addition the face of the party Big Brother is extremely ironic as Orwell uses this as a tactic to make
you feel reassured. This is because the word Big Brother is an example of a double entendre as a big
brother is commonly associated with protection, care and love which is the extreme opposite in this
case as the party seeks power...for its own sake conveying the irony further as it is not what it seems at
first glance. The constant motif of BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU exemplifies the idea they
will always try to control you, and they have great power. The fact that Orwell chose these names is a
reflection of the Party s of the brainwashing of their society and the desire for control over the people.
It is a warning as it emphasises the abusive nature of dictators, as they use psychological manipulation
as a means of control. The use of names in Nineteen Eighty Four presents a false sense of security and
desirability to citizens, as it makes the state appear friendly and trust worthy regardless of their
demeaning acts. The slogan of the

Anti Whaling Research Paper
I totally disagree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non
endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption, because first of whaling or hunting is cruelty,
we should not have to kill animals, which can get disappeared after a while. Even though they call it a
research, hundreds of whales per year could not be hunted. In Japan, they say that, they had a tradition
of whaling, but not all traditions are good, I mean killing whales could not be a good tradition. There
are many bad traditions in the world people were doing without knowledge, but the governments or
some organizations are working to prevent it. I believe that, this is one of the bad traditions of our
world.
No, I do not think the whaling ban constitutes a violation of these nation s sovereignty, because it only
provides prevention to some species, so that they will not be in danger. It restricts the number of
whales which may be hunted per year, and commands on which seasons of the year will whaling be

There need to be an international panel or board, which can decide and give some decisions if they did
not obey the rules. The most important thing is that people should not have fear to the rules, instead of
fearing to losing the species of whales, all people should believe that, these whales are the beauty of
the sea and it is the responsibility of everyone to protect them from disappearing. Today because it is
their culture, they are whaling, what about tomorrow when all the species are in danger, what will they
do for their culture, the people of these countries need to think this. So if everybody could understand

Benefits And Treatment Of Dissociative Identity Disorder
Diazepam Paired With Psychotherapy Dissociative Identity Disorder is a disorder that is hardly talked
about, however has extreme effects on patients that suffer with it. However, this topic is important
because it can lead to finding treatments that may be more effective for patients with DID. Past studies
have shown that the main treatment for Dissociative Identity Disorder usually involves therapy. The
most popular types of therapy are psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and family therapy. Treatment for
DID has a specific purpose which is to unite an individual with their personalities, and form a
functional identity (Pais, 2009). Additionally, a strength of past studies is that they usually do a follow
up on patients. Another strength is that the participants are usually all of different ages. One limitation
is that there is never enough participants for research, another limitation is that there aren t many
treatment options to try on patients. Furthermore, is diazepam useful when paired with psychotherapy?
Moreover, my study will be unique because there has only been one case that tried lorazepam, which
is a similar drug to diazepam, and it proved to be successful (Mushtaq, Shoib, Arif, Shah, Mushtaq,
2014). Also, my study will have more than one patient, to have more accurate results. Finally,
diazepam and psychotherapy could be a good treatment for DID. Method

Consumer s Perception of a Brand Image Incredibly Relevant
CHANGE THEIR PERCEPTION
Consumer s perception of a brand image such as Microsoft is incredibly relevant in terms of a positive
perception on a brand leads on to a positive perception of a product and therefore, Microsoft can
successful market to students. Currently consumers main perception on Windows 8 directly correlates
to their perception on Microsoft, and at the moment it is not as strong as their competitors brand
perception and culture.
Microsoft has to successfully alter their perception to not only be a positive perception, but a
perception of Microsoft that is superior to competitors such as Apple and Google. Microsoft has to

Students have the need to blend in and stand out at the same time, they want to be fashion forward and
knowledgeable it is up to Microsoft to persuade their target market that Microsoft is modern and
fashion forward. Engaging generation Y will increase a consumer s perception regarding Windows 8
and can make it feel personally relevant to them.
MOTIVATION IS KEY
In order to successfully market Windows 8, Microsoft has to motivate students to make the effort to be
interested in Microsoft. Lyengar and Lepper (2000) point out that a lack of motivation can cause
consumers to either defer the decision, search for alternatives, choose a default option or simply opt
not to choose. All of these options do not favour Microsoft in any way. Deferring the decision or not
making the decision at all reduces Microsoft s presence and exposure to the market because this
means that consumers are not willing to go that extra step to research Microsoft. Microsoft also does
not want consumers to opt for the default option, due to Apple s immense brand image and popularity,
especially to students Apple has become the protypical brand leader which only diminishes Microsoft
s perception with consumers. Motivation is highly affected from external competitors such as Apple s
iOS and Google s Android operating systems.
Microsoft should aim to create motivation for students and young consumers to become interested in
Windows 8 via university events. The open days are

The Cooper Processing Company (CPC) is a manufacturer, or processor, of food products.

devoted to the retail channel, 10 of them are devoted to the foodservice channel. Since there are no
sales managers and each salesperson pays for selling expenses out of their salary, this accounts for all
of the personal selling expense.
You learn that all sales promotions were conducted in the retail channel.
Next, you discover that there is a great difference in the number of orders placed by customers in each

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s Poetry Of The Nineteenth...
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow epitomized poetry of the nineteenth century, yet remained living,
breathing figure through the aisles of history with his work.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine then still part of
Massachusetts on February 27, 1807, the second son in a family of eight children. His mother,
Zilpah Wadsworth, found herself the daughter of a Revolutionary War hero. His father, Stephen
Longfellow, served a prominent Portland lawyer and later a member of Congress.Henry assumed the

Longfellow s growing duties as a professor left him little time to write more. In addition, Frances
Appleton, a young woman from Boston he was courting, had refused his proposal of marriage.
Frances finally accepted his proposal the following spring, bringing in the best eighteen years of
Longfellow s life. The couple had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood, and the marriage gave
him a fighting spirit. In 1847, he published Evangeline, a book length poem about Evangeline, which
describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved,
Gabriel
Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great
Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in
a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near.
Finally, she settles in Philadelphia and, as an old woman, works as a Sister of Mercy among the poor.
While tending the dying during an epidemic, she finds Gabriel among the sick, and he sadly dies in
her arms .The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Even to the point of inspiring similar stories, Louisiana Judge

The Great Recession revealed the financial vulnerability of millions of US households. In its
aftermath, researchers and policymakers have turned their attention to improving the next generation s
knowledge of personal finance and its access to secure financial offerings (US Department of the

main reason so many people have personal financial issues is because of the lack of knowledge that
people have about the meaning of financial terms. If you lack knowledge or don t fully understand

Analysis Of Dream A Little Dream Of Me
First recorded in 1931 by Oswald George Nelson, known as Ozzie Nelson, with his orchestra, Dream
a Little Dream of Me came into existence. Two days later, after Ozzie Nelson had recorded Dream a
Little Dream of Me , the song was again recorded on February 18, 1931 by orchestra leader and

The Effect Of Fructose On The Aging Process
indefinitely on long lived molecules such as collagen and DNA. Evidence suggests that these AGE
molecules play a role in the aging process. The Maillard process is dependent on the reactivity of the
sugar involved. Fructose is much more reactive than glucose. In vivo, the rate of non enzymatic
glycosylation of haemoglobin was 7.5 greater, and the rate of protein cross linking (a marker of aging)
was 10 times greater, in the presence of fructose than in the presence of glucose. Therefore, it is safe
to conclude that fructose has a much greater implication in the aging process than glucose, taking the
glycosylation of haemoglobin as an assay for this. [1]
As a reducing sugar, fructose reacts with protein molecules to form toxic advanced glycation end
products (AGEs) to a much greater extent than other sugars, which appears to contribute not only to
the aging process but also play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications in diabetic patients
such as nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy and others. Supplementing the diet of healthy male
volunteers with 3g of fructose per kg of body weight per day resulted in insulin resistance developing
in as little as six days. A study carried out in non diabetic rats fed a diet containing 68% carbohydrate,
provided as fructose, shows that almost all retinas from the rats showed pathologic changes that were
histologically indistinguishable from diabetic retinopathy. [1]

The obsessive noir protagonist is drawn into a destiny he cannot escape; he is impelled toward his fate
by exterior forces beyond his power and interior forces beyond his control (Borde and Chaumeton 33).
This statement holds true for Coen films as well, especially Fargo. Jerry Lundegaard struggles with his
constant losing and failure. The questions that that surround Jerry are: Is he relatable? Does he

can con his father in law out of one million dollars. This is a plan that one could easily think of, but
would someone in his or her right mind actually go through with it? Jerry Lundegaard believes his

someone who constantly fails no matter how hard he tries. He is introduced to the film when he meets

thumb. He is obviously nervous to be meeting with these hit men (Buscemi and Peter Stormare), he
even stutters and Carl calls him out which makes him even more nervous. Jerry s internal fish out of

make a living off of her writing. People may know her through her books, but in modern times, the
song Over the River and Through the Woods is a well known piece of literature by Child. Lydia Child
wrote the poem the song was based on about her trips to her grandmother s house as a child. This
amazing writer, Lydia Maria Child, was born into an American abolitionist family on February 11,
1802. Abolition is the action of getting rid of an old system or norm. An abolitionist is someone who

In 1833, Child released a new book, An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans.
This book was based around the history and life of slaves. She also calls for the immediate

exploited the fact both the south and north are responsible for the effects and existence of slavery. This
book was not the hit it was meant to be. As one of the first anti slavery publication printed in book
form, but Child did make more despite what happened at first. As her sales plummeted, her friends did
as well. By daring to condemn slavery at a time when abolition was still highly unpopular even in the
North, Child became the object of national hatred. (History of American Women) The website also
states that most of her friends in Boston were outraged by the way Child had blamed the north as well
as the south for the prejudice towards blacks and the segregation that existed. Lydia Maria Child
continued with her anti slavery books and standing up for what was right, even though she lost her
reputation and friends. Maria Child displayed perseverance when she continued to write the loathed
books. Even though it seemed she lost everything in just one night, she still managed to say, I want to

Examples Of Desserts
1 INTRODUCTION
Caitlin Hines discusses in her research Rebaking the Pie: The Woman as Dessert Metaphor that there
is a consistent, widespread, generally unconscious and undocumented metaphor in English equating
women as sex objects with desserts (Hines 1999: 145). Women as dessert metaphor functions both in
linguistic expressions, such as tart and cookie, and in customs, for example women jumping out of
cakes (ibid: 145). Hines argues that the woman as dessert metaphor reduces women to objects,
sexualizes and belittles women, making women seem like powerless, inanimate objects. Moreover,
she makes a point that women are not just objects, but sweet, and not just desserts, but pieces or slices.
She uses Sally McConnell Ginet s theory that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rihanna states that a man wants to lick the icing off , using cake and eating as metaphors for sex.
Moreover, in the example 4, blowing candles out could be a metaphor for an orgasm.
Unlike Trey Songz and Rihanna s songs, Melanie Martinez s Milk and Cookies does not have any
sexual allusions. However, it still depicts the use of the woman as dessert metaphor:
(5) I m fucking crazy, need my prescription filled Do you like my cookies? They re made just for you
A little bit of sugar, but lots of poison, too (Martinez 2015b)
As Caitlin Hines defines in her research, the woman as dessert metaphor reduces women to sinful and
decadent (1999: 148), which is shown in the example 5. In the example, the female singer is offering
her poisonous cookies to the receiver, making a connection with women and cookies. The example
could be interpreted in an abstract sense. The singer is sweet with a little bit of sugar , but also sinful:
but lots of poison, too .
R. Kelly s Cookie is filled with sexual allusions and is a metaphor for sex:

Personal Experience Of Abusive Relationships
Welcome to my blog, Perfect Love. Throughout my blog posts, I will discuss my personal experience
with an abusive relationship, how to realize that you are in an abusive relationship, and how to leave.
Aside from using my own personal experiences, I will also add credible sources to my posts.
At some point in your life, you will meet someone and fall in love. For me, this experience happened
my junior year of high school as I met my boyfriend, John (names have been changed). At first,
everything was great. I was a cheerleader and he was a football player; the perfect combination. As
time went on, I began to notice him acting differently. He would call me names, and treat me like the

He would have his fair share with other girls and would degrade me. The name calling then turned
into screaming arguments, leaving me in tears. If I did not do what he wanted, he would make sure to
make my life a living hell. I began to lose many great friendships because I was not allowed to
hangout with anyone. He would keep tabs on me all of the time. I was not allowed to drink alcohol, go
to parties, hangout with my family, or have any guy friends.
Now, I know what you are all thinking. Leah, why did you stay? Honestly, I can t really answer this
question. At the time, John made me feel like I could not do any better. He would tell me that I was
too ugly to ever find someone to love. And every time I did try to leave, he would always find a way
for me to stay. Whether it be texting me 100 times, or talking to me until I agreed to take him back.
Leaving can be more complicated than it seems.
According to The National Domestic Violence Hotline, the abused stay in domestic relationships due
to fear, embarrassment, low self esteem, love, and believing that the abuse is normal. For me, these are
all true.
Fear: I was afraid of what my life would end up being if John was not in my life. I was afraid of what
he would do if I actually did leave

Gross Domestic Product and Gross National Income
Samantha Montero Renee Scott
After reading Economics: Principles and Tools, we understand that one is able to
measure the production of the entire economy by a tool known as the Gross Domestic Product
(GDP). GDP is defined as the total market value of all final goods and services, produced within
a country.1 It summarizes the entire production of an economy into a single number (GDP) and it
gauge s a country standard of living. Throughout this essay we will aim to explain both the main
components of GDP and it s differences from other forms of economic measurements, as well as

GDP, on top of having several different components, has a few different ways in which it
measures output. Two different measurements that are widely used are Nominal GDP and Real
GDP. The main difference between nominal GDP and real GDP is that nominal GDP doesn t
adjust for inflation and real GDP does. 2 While real GDP is adjusted for differences in price
levels, nominal GDP when calculated is not and, as a result, will often appear higher and can be
misleading. With measurements that require adjustments, one will always encounter
discrepancies. Gross domestic input or GDI measures the sum of all income earned while
producing goods and services within a nation s borders. 3 The difference between GDI and GDP
is that GDI calculates economic activity based on income, and GDP calculates economic activity
based on spending. While they are similar, the two measurements use different methods to gauge
the economy and thus, the data collected by GDP and GDI will almost never be the same.
According to Dr. Marilyn Waring in the film Who is Counting?4 As long as activity
passes through the market, it is good for growth. In the film Dr. Waring discusses the major

Sydney Carton Essay
Sydney Carton is very important to the plot of A Tale of Two Cities. There are three separate instances
in this book where Carton keeps the plot going, and without him, the story would have ended. The
first was his similarity to Charles Darnay was keeping Darnay out of jail. Without Carton, Mr. Stryver
would not be able to win his cases because Sydney is the brains behind the operation. Finally, he was
executed instead of Darnay, so that Darnay and Lucie could live out their lives together. The first we
hear of Carton is at Charles Darnay s first trial. Charles is on trial for spying on England for France.
Mr. Stryver is Darnay s lawyer and has done almost nothing to help the case, but just as it seems it is
over for Charles, Stryver uses his final defense: Charles Darnay looks exactly like Sydney Carton. At
this time in history, trials were not just at all. Often times public opinion was enough to sentence

never before made a sacrifice for anyone except himself. In the second half of the quote, he says that
he has never truly known peace in his life, but in his sacrifice he is able to find this peace. Carton is

transactions such as export, import, buying, selling, loan and borrowing are dependent on bank

interrelated with banking system. The history of banking system is old. It is derived from reserve

especially our country is not old. Bangladesh is a developing country, in where, limited resources,
burden of overpopulation, economic instability, political instability, corruption, natural disaster, are
always hindering the development. The high performance of remittance has a greater contribution in
present economic stability of the country, when we can convert the burden of overpopulation toward
better human resource through effective human resource management, skill development program,
training, education, creating new working sector to reduce unemployment, emphasis on
entrepreneurship. Only banking system or financial institutions may convert the overpopulation into
better human resource by providing soft loan for building new working sector for employment,

Comedy In The Play A Midsummer Night s Dream
They Way Insults Promote Comedy In a quote by Madeline Kahn she says, Comedy is created when
someone is trying very earnestly to do what he feels is the right thing to do at that moment. She is
saying that comedy is usually created almost by accident. We try to do the right thing, but it does not
always work out in the way we expect it to and the outcome is what makes the situation funny. In the
play A Midsummer s Night Dream there are many elements of comedy that Shakespeare uses to
communicate what he is trying to present within the play. These elements include mistaken identities,
turning things upside down, wit and wordplay, multiple intertwining plots, the element of marriage,
insults and burns, suspension of natural laws, language, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People find it funny because he insulted her and she did not even get upset. She loves him so much
that she does not even care when he insults her, she believes him to be joking and takes it as sarcasm.
Helena wants to be with Demetrius desperately and he does not want anything to do with her. These
lines would be the equivalent of an individual saying you are ugly to another individual and have them
reply with you are not and will never be ugly. It is funny and slightly ironic because they are just
stating the opposite of one another. Shakespeare added this to show how much Helena was smitten
over Demetrius and how much he absolutely loathed her. No matter what he says to her she still loves
and cares for him while he just wants her to go away and because of that it gives the perfect
opportunity for Demetrius to keep insulting her because no matter what he says to her she takes it in
stride. Which allows Shakespeare to have Demetrius keep insulting Helena. These insults keep people
laughing and entertained throughout the play. Shakespeare uses insult comedy to show a character s
true colors and personality. Most of the insults that are said are directed at Hermia. They are mostly
directed at her because at the time they were said by Demetrius and Lysander who were both a under a
love potion that made them believe that they loved Helena. It is easy to see how truly

Light and Dark Imagery in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a novel about a man named Marlow and his journey into the
depths of the African Congo. Marlow is in search of a man named Kurtz, an ivory trader. Though
Marlow?s physical journey seems rather simple, it takes him further into his own heart and soul than
into the Congo. The setting, symbols and characters each contain light and dark images, these images
shape the central theme of the novel. Conrad uses light and dark imagery to help create the setting for
the story; light represents civilization while darkness suggests the uncivilized. The novel opens on the

The river Thames is the river that brings you into Europe, civilization, while the Congo brings you
into the jungle or darkness. Another important symbol in the story is the ivory. The ivory has a two
fold meaning and is a central theme in the novel. Ivory is taken from the tusks of male elephants; they
live in a pristine area untouched by humans. However, once the white man places a high price on the
ivory, the ivory turns from good to evil. Conrad uses the ivory as a representation of the greed and
corruption that is in the white mans soul. In the case of Kurtz this same greed and corruption overtook
his soul, and caused his death. Each character has a special role in the novel; Kurtz and Marlow are
the most important, through these two characters we are able to see how good and evil balance each
other out. Marlow?s journey into the heart of darkness can also be seen as a journey into his own soul.
He was in search of the darkest of objects, the ivory. Unlike Kurtz, Marlow was able to withstand the
darkness from controlling him. Kurtz soul became the darkness and caused him to forget everything
else there was to life. His last words were not that of love but rather of hate, ?The horrors the horrors.?

What Is Maslow s Hierarchy Of Needs
Theory One of the many interesting things Maslow noticed while he worked with monkeys early in
his career, was that some needs take precedence over others. For example, if you are hungry and
thirsty, you will tend to try to take care of the thirst first. After all, you can do without food for weeks,
but you can only do without water for a couple of days! Thirst is a stronger need than hunger.
Likewise, if you are very very thirsty, but someone has put a choke hold on you and you can t breath,
which is more important? The need to breathe, of course. On the other hand, sex is less powerful than
any of these. Let s face it, you won t die if you don t get it! Maslow took this idea and created his now
famous hierarchy of needs. Beyond ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of the preceding four levels he calls deficit needs, or D needs. If you don t have enough of
something i.e. you have a deficit you feel the need. But if you get all you need, you feel nothing at all!
In other words, they cease to be motivating. As the old blues song goes, you don t miss your water till
your well runs dry! He also talks about these levels in terms of homeostasis. Homeostasis is the
principle by which your furnace thermostat operates: When it gets too cold, it switches the heat on;
When it gets too hot, it switches the heat off. In the same way, your body, when it lacks a certain
substance, develops a hunger for it; When it gets enough of it, then the hunger stops. Maslow simply
extends the homeostatic principle to needs, such as safety, belonging, and esteem, that we don t
ordinarily think of in these terms. Maslow sees all these needs as essentially survival needs. Even love
and esteem are needed for the maintenance of health. He says we all have these needs built in to us
genetically, like instincts. In fact, he calls them instinctoid instinct like needs. In terms of overall
development, we move through these levels a bit like stages. As newborns, our focus (if not our entire
set of needs) is on the physiological. Soon, we begin to recognize that we need to be safe. Soon after
that, we crave attention and affection. A bit later, we look for self esteem. Mind you, this is in

They have also used nature and landscape to highlight key events.

Eventually both ladies have their rooms with views and Lucy throws open her windows and admires
the lights dancing over the Arno, in sharp contrast to the cypresses and Apennines, black against the
rising room. This is like a metaphoric opening of Lucy s eyes and mind in preparation for the
adventures which await her. In addition, this black and white vignette is a romantic, idyllic view of the
Arno and is in contrast with the brightly coloured, sunlit scene of the following morning, which is full
of life, movement and noise, as the Italians go about their daily routines and Lucy views the reality
which is about to alter her world for ever.
By comparison, The Remains of the Day is set in the rolling countryside of England between the two
Wars. Stevens is the old butler at Darlington Hall and he has lived his life in service, metaphorically
confined within large, country houses. He has had a sheltered, privileged life, gaining his knowledge
of England from employers, guests, staff and books, especially The Wonder of England by Mrs Jane
Symons. His present employer, Mr Farraday, an American, observes that you re always locked up in
these big houses and encourages Stevens to get out and see this beautiful country of yours . Stevens
begins his journey along routes which surprised him due to their familiarity . However, he soon
experiences a sense of unease mixed with exhilaration as the surroundings become unrecognizable.

Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The...
We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting
rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully apply
this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize some
utility in deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following concept.
A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is known to both
players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the maximization of
such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the assumption that other
players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the model is that maximizing a
utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of uniqueness to be present in
predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests on the Von Neumann
Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms (defined in the Glossary):
completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always exists a utility function which a
player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My contention in this paper is that utility
maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is too broad of an idea to be of practical use.
While the axioms of payoff rationality clearly imply consistency of behaviour, since transitivity and

storms in the area, but king John then renamed it to the Cape of Good Hope. After Dias s massive
discovery, he returned to Portugal in December, 1488. Due to Dias s brilliant discovery, he was later

Trope In Slaughterhouse Five
Similar to Hosseini, Vonnegut in his novel Slaughterhouse Five begets the Tralfamadorians who act as
the Hermit Guru. The Hermit Guru character trope could be described as a character who lives away
from society and contains powers/wisdom to bring enlightenment. As stated before the
Tralfamadorians fit this description. For example, Vonnegut states, Earth can t be detected from
Tralfamadore, as far as that goes. They re both very small. They re very far apart (Vonnegut 30). As
brought about by Vonnegut, the Tralfamadorians live away from society, so far that they do not even
live on planet Earth, just as the Hermit Guru character trope. In addition, for the enlightenment trait,
Vonnegut grants Tralfamadorians the ability to, see in four ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Vonnegut explains how Billy is weak by comparing him to an insect. A Tralfamadorian explains to
Billy that, we are... trapped in the amber of this moment after asking Billy if [he] ever seen bugs
trapped in amber (Vonnegut 77). The Tralfamadorians are telling Billy that he is as helpless as a bug
encased in amber. Billy s outlandish admiration for his captors further proves Billy s weak
mindedness. The Tralfamadorians take advantage of Billy as he is so willing to accept their ideas.
Because of this, Billy embraces a sadistic ideology where nothing actually matters. For example,
Vonnegut grants Billy warrant to state, Now, when I myself hear that somebody is dead, I simply
shrug and say what the Tralfamadorians say about dead people, which is So it goes (Vonnegut 27).
Throughout the story the reader reads Billy say So it goes many times and it just means that Billy no
longer cares for life or the ones that he loves because he truly believes the person is just fine in plenty
of other moments (Vonnegut 27). The Tralfamadorians taught him to not care. Vonnegut s message is
to not just be an acolyte because what the higher power could be teaching you could be very harmful
to you and to others. Vonnegut uses the powerful Tralfamadorians to contrast the weak Billy and the
relationship acts as an example of the negative effects of following

Cultural Commodification InThey Are Taking Our Culture Away
Abstract They Are Taking our Culture Away by Elisabeth Kirtsoglou and Dimitrios Theodossopoulos
discusses the Garifuna community and their struggle with cultural commodification and how their
community handles and tries to fix it. Throughout They are Taking our Culture Away Elisabeth and
Dimitrios looked at the many ways the Garifuna are being commodified. Within this paper what they
researched will also be discussed and also what can be done to help preserve this culture.
Commodification as a broad topic will play a large role in this paper, and whether or not culture is a
commodity that should be bought and sold. Commodification will also be talked about in terms with
what role it plays in a culture and the affects that it has on modern tourism and the tourist s outlook on
the world and other cultures.
Commodification
Commodification is defined as a way to make something into an object for commercial use . In terms
of culture and tourism, commodification refers to using a place s culture and the cultural artifacts to
make a large enough profit to support part of the area s economy . Commodification is found
everywhere in modern tourism. Although there may be good things about cultural commodification,
such as profit, there are many more bad aspects to it. For example, commodification alters a tourists
potentiality to have an authentic experience while visiting another culture. This then introduces the
tourist to a false culture and strays them away from the

The Deadly Politics Of Industrial Pollution
Nowadays it is common to hear on the news about recent health and environmental scares especially
with the increasing research done about the causes and effects of global warming. However, life just a
century ago was very different. During the early twentieth century, people trusted industries.
Therefore, they did not fight for government regulation of industries or the need for it to inform them
about possible harmful practices done by industries. It took the deaths and emergence of illnesses of
many workers and citizens for the public to start worrying. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner
discussed this time period with a focus on the lead and chemical industries in their book Deceit and
Denial: the Deadly Politics of Industrial Pollution. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To please the public the industry also said they would conduct research about the effects of lead, but
the research was funded by the lead industry so they skewed the presentation of the results to the
public. Soon there were also cases reported of lead poisoning in children from their habit of biting
lead painted toys. This time the lead industry tried to distract the public by increasing their
advertisements highlighting the benefits of lead using the mascot of the Dutch Boy Painter and
slogans, such as ethyl is to gasoline what vitamins are to food. However, by the 1970 s with the
introduction of safer elements and the decrease in public support, the lead industry lost its importance
in the world.
The second section of the book focused on the chemical industry, specifically vinyl chloride, where it
was explained there was little known about the effects of chemicals. Because of this, there was the
question of whether a product was to be considered safe until proven dangerous or vice versa where a
product was considered dangerous until proven safe. This time the public showed greater opposition to
the use of vinyl chloride, as environmentalists and labor unions united to reveal the harmful effects of
it. Similar to the lead industry, the chemical industry also fought back reasoning to the government
that only high levels of chemical exposure was harmful to people and the government

Materialism And Rationalism Of Ancient Greek Philosophers
1)The two competing paradigms Materialism and Rationalism between ancient Greek philosophers
could be narrowed down into two categories. The two concepts related back to the main question;
what concept is primary? Physical or conceptual.
The materialism paradigm was centered around the belief that matter is an essential component in
nature and that the world is just matter in motion. All things are a result of material interaction.
Everything is made up of something. Because of this, Materialists believe that matter is primary and
spirit body ideas were secondary. Materialisms explains there is a world outside of the mind and how
our mind is just a part of it. This paradigm was supported by an example of materialism can be shown
through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the belief that experience alone does not give us knowledge but rather our mind responds to the
math from the experience to become conscious. Similar to the Pythagoreans rationalists believed that
thought was related to math. We did not start to see this connection until the philosopher Descartes
showed us during the Age of Reason in the 17th century.
One similarity between the two paradigms is that they are both monist models of reality. Monism is a
core component in philosophy and relates back to various paradigms. The material monism solely
focusses on the role matter plays in the world. Everything in our lives is somehow made up of matter.
Without it, we would not be able to have mental interactions. Whereas rational monism relies on the
mind. Every experience we have in life leads to a greater sense of knowledge and makes us believe
that our mind is more trustworthy than our sense.
2) Plato s simile of the line in Book VI represents the platonic paradigm by documenting the levels of
forms. The platonic paradigm is focused around the belief that there is a perfect vision of everything
and that we should strive to reach this vision. The best exercise we can do is to continue to strive
towards the ideal image set before us. By knowing what the ideal image is, it allows us to understand
what is wrong and correct our action so that we are closer to the form. The simile of the line represents
the development of the human mind.

Essay about Puerto Rican Migration to Nyc
Christine Costanzo Puerto Rican Migration to New York City
The story of the Puerto Rican people is unique in the history of U.S. immigration, just as Puerto Rico
occupies a distinctive and sometimes confusing position in the nation s civic fabric. Puerto Rico has
been a possession of the U.S. for more than a century, but it has never been a state. Its people have
been U.S. citizens since 1917, but they have no vote in Congress. As citizens, the people of Puerto
Rico can move throughout the 50 states just as any other Americans can legally, this is considered
internal migration, not immigration. However, in moving to the mainland, Puerto Ricans leave a
homeland with its own distinct identity and culture, and the transition can ... Show more content on

factory owners and employment agencies had begun recruiting heavily on the island. In addition, the
postwar years saw the return home of thousands of Puerto Rican war veterans, whose service in the
U.S. military had shown them the world. But perhaps the most significant cause was the sudden
availability of affordable air travel. After centuries of immigration by boat, the Puerto Rican migration
became the first great airborne migration in U.S. history. The first great generation of Puerto Rican
migrants established communities in cities throughout the country, including Chicago, Philadelphia,
and Newark, as well as in mid Atlantic farm villages and the mill towns of New England. However,
since the 1930s, the capital of Puerto Rican culture in the mainland U.S. has been New York City.
Despite its great distance from the Caribbean, New York had long been the landing point of seagoing
Puerto Ricans, and the airborne newcomers followed suit. The new migrants settled in great numbers
in Northeast Manhattan, in a neighborhood that soon became known as Spanish Harlem. Although
many had been farm workers in Puerto Rico, they know found themselves working in a wide variety
of jobs, staffing the hospitals, the hotels, the garment factories, and the police departments of their
new hometown, and they soon became a significant force in the city s political and cultural life. The
migration to the 50 states slowed

Torts are civil laws that are broken and are rules for lawsuits. When these rules are broken they can
result in injury and harm this is usually the basis for the claim. Torts are punishable by imprisonment
but in most cases tort law is to provide relief for damages and to stop others from doing the same
thing. The injured party can sue for loss of earnings, pain and suffering, and medical expenses or
present and future.

Almost every jurisdiction a person is responsible for all losses and damages that result from his or her
negligence. With certain exceptions owners, people who handles pets, and people that harbor pets can
be held responsible for injuries caused by their pet. Negligence is also defined as the lack or ordinary
care. An example of an unreasonable action would be a dog owner letting go of his dogs leash when
another dog approaches so that the dogs can play. An unreasonable action might be the failure to keep
a dog away from guest when it is prone to play rough or knock people down. Negligence is also
considered when an adult places a watchdog in the room with a sleeping infant. If a person fails to
protect a visitor from a potentially dangerous pet this falls under the doctrine of premises liability.
Landlords, landowners and management companies can be held liable and responsible to their tenants
failing to get rid of a vicious animal. The final example with the ferret this is an example of
negligence. Any animal has the potential to be vicious if it exposed to new people or feels threatened.
So if the homeowners have company it is best to keep the ferret in a cage or in a room with the door
closed to avoid possible injuries to their guest. If the pet owner follows all necessary precautions an
incident occurs then they will not be liable for the incident if one occurs.

Chimpanzee Droppings Lead Scientists to
Evolutionary Discovery by Erica F. Kosal, Biology Department, North Carolina Wesleyan College
Part I Chimpanzee Behavior
Far in the remote western African jungles of Cameroon, Dr. Beatrice
Hahn and her team of scientists from the University of Alabama have been examining chimpanzee
droppings. Members of the great ape family, chimpanzees typically travel in groups of  to 
animals, forming smaller subgroups to forage during the day and then coming together again to sleep
in trees at night. Communities lack a definite leader and are usually split into a number of subgroups,
often when the animals go to forage. These subgroups (referred to as fusion fission groups ) are

Using test tubes containing a preservative, the scientists collected  fecal samples from  forest
sites and later analyzed them in Dr. Hahn s laboratory.
The team was interested in tracing the evolution of hiv (human immunodeficiency virus) to investigate
the origins of hiv/aids. There is a simian virus known as siv (simian immunodeficiency virus) that is
closely related to hiv and has been found in  species of African primates, ranging from various
species of monkey (e.g., Blue monkey, L Hoest monkey) to mangabeys (e.g., red capped mangabey),
colobus, baboons, mandrills, and chimpanzees.
Both hiv and siv are considered to be retroviruses, containing rna instead of dna as their genetic
material.
Because the virus must insert its genetic material into a host cell to take over that host cell, a retrovirus
has to convert its rna back into dna form. Only after this backstep (hence the term retro ) occurs, can
the virus successfully insert its genetic material (now in dna form) into the host s dna. rna is slightly
different from dna. rna contains only one genetic strand, whereas dna is a doubly stranded molecule.
In addition, the sugars of these molecules are slightly different. dna contains the sugar deoxyribose
while rna contains the sugar ribose. In both cases, the sugars act as the backbone for the molecule and
provide a place for the bases to attach. The bases determine the order of amino acids and thus

Essay About Moving School
The most significant challenge that I ve had to face was moving schools and even states. It was some
of the biggest and quickest changes I ve ever had to deal with and it wasn t easy especially at ages 8
through 11. I learned to adapt to things faster so I wouldn t get the feeling of being left behind. This
experience definitely changed me as a person making me stronger and independent. Moving to new
schools is never simple; moving meant leaving everything behind and having to start over. From
preschool to third grade I had gone to the same elementary, had lots of friends and knew most of the
teachers. The school itself had been around for about 60 years and they decided it was getting old so
they wanted to build a new school in the back. The only problem was not all the students would be
transferring over to the new school and I was one of those students. ... Show more content on

more different than the schools in Idaho, one difference being that the schools in California were more

in Idaho. I was beginning my last year of elementary in a new place and then going on to middle
school which was exciting. What I learned in this new school with these new people in a completely
different state was that being myself was probably the most important thing in life. I didn t enjoy the
feeling of having to put other people s wants and needs over my own, that wasn t helping me at all. I

It can be seen that the author is no other than JOHN CAI BENJAMIN WEAVER where this source was produced on the 16 of May 2011. The purpose of this source is to highlight the good and evil things Hitler did behind his people s backs and who was instrumental in adopting the beliefs for nationalism in Germany. It is clear that Adolf Hitler was instrumental in adopting nationalism into Germany with the rest of the country believing and following in also becoming nationalists. • 4. Symphony 3 And Symphony 5 Comparison In this essay, I will discuss two specific symphonies, Symphony No.3 and Symphony No.5, which are composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 1827) was a German composer that stood out as one of the most famous and influential composers, in both Classical era and in the entire history of music. Beethoven was born in a family of talented musicians, both of his father and grandfather. He composed nine symphonies, thirty five piano sonatas, in which thirty two are numbered, ten violin sonatas, sixteen string quartets, an opera and two mass. From all of his works, nine of his symphonies are greatly known by people, and each of them all masterpieces. Symphony No.3 and Symphony No.5 are the most famous symphonies, and these are what I m going to discuss. Both of the symphony have four movements. The first movement of both symphonies is Allegro con brio, which means very fast and lively. This only defines the tempo and liveliness are similar in both opening of the symphonies. Also, like most first movements of all Classical symphonies, the first movement is written in the structure of a sonata form. The form typically consists of an exposition, development, recapitulation, and coda. Although they are alike, there s still having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Symphony No.5, the third movement is in ternary form. The movement opens soft and slow and the liveliness has not awakened until the whole orchestra gradually goes into a full crescendo and replays the four note motive again. Contrary to Symphony No.5, the quick crescendo in strings then followed by flutes almost instantly sprang the scherzo of Eroica into its liveliness. As one can easily notice, almost everything is played in staccato for Eroica. In both of these symphonies, Beethoven makes use of many crescendos and very commonly climaxed them off by the loud sounding of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Slavery in Ancient Greece and Rome Essay Slavery was the practice of taking a human being and making them do the work of another by force. This was practiced through out the ancient world and especially in Rome and Greece. Slaves were nothing more than just property to the ancient peoples. They didn t have the rights of citizens nor were they able to do what they want in most cases. Slaves had many tasks that they had to do, many of which included taking care of the masters house and kids, cooking and cleaning that house, herding the cattle for the farming families, being guards for some prisons, fighting for entertainment of the masses, and more common was sexual activities with the slaves. The owners could do with the slaves what they wished, be it sexual favors or they could beat them at will. Beating a slave though was not usually the best thing that an owner of slaves could do because they didn t want to damage their property. To get a slave to work hard wasn t that difficult most of the time, all the owner had to do was refrain from beating and instead be nice to them. In Rome some slaves were offered freedom if they met certain criteria of the owner. After earning their freedom they were given citizenship in the city. This gave the slaves a reason to work hard, something to look forward to. Although slaves worked mainly inside of the house there were owners who used them for other reasons also. Slaves are living tools this is Aristotle defining what slaves are, and this is what they were used as by everyone, inside the house and out of it. Almost everyone in the ancient world had a slave or two, the only exception was with the poorest families. There was even slaves that owned their own slaves, usually only one of the opposite sex though so that they could have some semblance of a family. Pliny, a governor of a Roman province wrote to emperor Trajan asking if he should use the slaves as guards in a local prison or use soldiers or to mix them both in there. Pliny obviously trusted his slaves enough if he was willing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Importance Of Life In Captivity For Animals Life in captivity for animals is comparable in some situations to humans living inside of a prison. The restrictions that are imposed on these animals while in captivity are unbearable living conditions that affect the animal both mentally and physically. The animals understand that this is not their home which leads to the breakdown of their psyche. One example of this comes from a zoo in the United Kingdom. In the year 1979, the Bristol Zoo gained a new animal which would become one of their biggest attractions. Misha the male polar bear caught the eye of the public with his unusual and odd behavior. Researchers that studied animal rights in the late twentieth century linked this behavior to Misha s enclosure at the zoo. Researchers came to the conclusion that the prison like living conditions that Misha encountered was the cause of his psychotic appearance. The public had described him as looking like a beast who was breaking down as a result of the captivity instead of an average polar bear in a zoo. The zoo was able to view Misha through surveillance during this entire process, similar to humans living in a prison or an asylum. According to the article by Andrew Flack, Following media attention from animal rights organizations and the media between 1985 and the early 1990s, Misha s psychotic appearance in a repeatedly evoked image of the prisons and asylums of the past, where surveillance, spectacle, and suffering collided to alter the natures of the beasts within ... Most dystopian novels contain themes of corruption and oppression, therefore in both The Handmaid s Tale and Nineteen Eighty Four language is obviously used as a form of the states control, enabling dystopian leaders to remain in power by manipulating language to restrict free thought. Orwell and Atwood have utilized language as a key tool of oppression throughout their novels. The use of language is mostly repressive, language can also be seen as liberating, and used as an act of rebellion, which the state wishes to eliminate. The novel Nineteen Eighty Four contains a world in which language is being systematically corrupted. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Ministry of peace concerned itself with war , The Ministry of Truth dedicated itself to destroying the truth and The Ministry of Love was described as frightening with gorilla faced guards. This brings forth the idea that the state are trying to subtly manipulate society however they are a threat. In addition the face of the party Big Brother is extremely ironic as Orwell uses this as a tactic to make you feel reassured. This is because the word Big Brother is an example of a double entendre as a big brother is commonly associated with protection, care and love which is the extreme opposite in this case as the party seeks power...for its own sake conveying the irony further as it is not what it seems at first glance. The constant motif of BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU exemplifies the idea they will always try to control you, and they have great power. The fact that Orwell chose these names is a reflection of the Party s of the brainwashing of their society and the desire for control over the people. It is a warning as it emphasises the abusive nature of dictators, as they use psychological manipulation as a means of control. The use of names in Nineteen Eighty Four presents a false sense of security and desirability to citizens, as it makes the state appear friendly and trust worthy regardless of their demeaning acts. • 8. Anti Whaling Research Paper I totally disagree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption, because first of whaling or hunting is cruelty, we should not have to kill animals, which can get disappeared after a while. Even though they call it a research, hundreds of whales per year could not be hunted. In Japan, they say that, they had a tradition of whaling, but not all traditions are good, I mean killing whales could not be a good tradition. There are many bad traditions in the world people were doing without knowledge, but the governments or some organizations are working to prevent it. I believe that, this is one of the bad traditions of our world. No, I do not think the whaling ban constitutes a violation of these nation s sovereignty, because it only provides prevention to some species, so that they will not be in danger. It restricts the number of whales which may be hunted per year, and commands on which seasons of the year will whaling be open or closed. In addition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There need to be an international panel or board, which can decide and give some decisions if they did not obey the rules. Today because it is their culture, they are whaling, what about tomorrow when all the species are in danger, what will they do for their culture, the people of these countries need to think this. Benefits And Treatment Of Dissociative Identity Disorder Diazepam Paired With Psychotherapy Dissociative Identity Disorder is a disorder that is hardly talked about, however has extreme effects on patients that suffer with it. However, this topic is important because it can lead to finding treatments that may be more effective for patients with DID. Past studies have shown that the main treatment for Dissociative Identity Disorder usually involves therapy. The most popular types of therapy are psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and family therapy. Treatment for DID has a specific purpose which is to unite an individual with their personalities, and form a functional identity (Pais, 2009). Additionally, a strength of past studies is that they usually do a follow up on patients. Another strength is that the participants are usually all of different ages. One limitation is that there is never enough participants for research, another limitation is that there aren t many treatment options to try on patients. Furthermore, is diazepam useful when paired with psychotherapy? Moreover, my study will be unique because there has only been one case that tried lorazepam, which is a similar drug to diazepam, and it proved to be successful (Mushtaq, Shoib, Arif, Shah, Mushtaq, 2014). Also, my study will have more than one patient, to have more accurate results. Finally, diazepam and psychotherapy could be a good treatment for DID. Method Participants/Subjects It ... Currently consumers main perception on Windows 8 directly correlates to their perception on Microsoft, and at the moment it is not as strong as their competitors brand perception and culture. Students have the need to blend in and stand out at the same time, they want to be fashion forward and knowledgeable it is up to Microsoft to persuade their target market that Microsoft is modern and fashion forward. Engaging generation Y will increase a consumer s perception regarding Windows 8 and can make it feel personally relevant to them. MOTIVATION IS KEY In order to successfully market Windows 8, Microsoft has to motivate students to make the effort to be interested in Microsoft. Lyengar and Lepper (2000) point out that a lack of motivation can cause consumers to either defer the decision, search for alternatives, choose a default option or simply opt not to choose. All of these options do not favour Microsoft in any way. Deferring the decision or not making the decision at all reduces Microsoft s presence and exposure to the market because this means that consumers are not willing to go that extra step to research Microsoft. Microsoft also does not want consumers to opt for the default option, due to Apple s immense brand image and popularity, especially to students Apple has become the protypical brand leader which only diminishes Microsoft s perception with consumers. Motivation is highly affected from external competitors such as Apple s iOS and Google s Android operating systems. Microsoft should aim to create motivation for students and young consumers to become interested in Windows 8 via university events. The open days are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow epitomized poetry of the nineteenth century, yet remained living, breathing figure through the aisles of history with his work. Frances finally accepted his proposal the following spring, bringing in the best eighteen years of Longfellow s life. The couple had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood, and the marriage gave him a fighting spirit. In 1847, he published Evangeline, a book length poem about Evangeline, which describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved, Gabriel Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near. Finally, she settles in Philadelphia and, as an old woman, works as a Sister of Mercy among the poor. While tending the dying during an epidemic, she finds Gabriel among the sick, and he sadly dies in her arms .The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. • 18. The Effect Of Fructose On The Aging Process indefinitely on long lived molecules such as collagen and DNA. Evidence suggests that these AGE molecules play a role in the aging process. The Maillard process is dependent on the reactivity of the sugar involved. Fructose is much more reactive than glucose. In vivo, the rate of non enzymatic glycosylation of haemoglobin was 7.5 greater, and the rate of protein cross linking (a marker of aging) was 10 times greater, in the presence of fructose than in the presence of glucose. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that fructose has a much greater implication in the aging process than glucose, taking the glycosylation of haemoglobin as an assay for this. [1] As a reducing sugar, fructose reacts with protein molecules to form toxic advanced glycation end products (AGEs) to a much greater extent than other sugars, which appears to contribute not only to the aging process but also play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications in diabetic patients such as nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy and others. Supplementing the diet of healthy male volunteers with 3g of fructose per kg of body weight per day resulted in insulin resistance developing in as little as six days. A study carried out in non diabetic rats fed a diet containing 68% carbohydrate, provided as fructose, shows that almost all retinas from the rats showed pathologic changes that were histologically indistinguishable from diabetic retinopathy. Examples Of Desserts 1 INTRODUCTION Caitlin Hines discusses in her research Rebaking the Pie: The Woman as Dessert Metaphor that there is a consistent, widespread, generally unconscious and undocumented metaphor in English equating women as sex objects with desserts (Hines 1999: 145). Women as dessert metaphor functions both in linguistic expressions, such as tart and cookie, and in customs, for example women jumping out of cakes (ibid: 145). Hines argues that the woman as dessert metaphor reduces women to objects, sexualizes and belittles women, making women seem like powerless, inanimate objects. The novel is mainly about George and Lennie and their life. But I am not going to write about that. I am mainly going to focus on the characters which live on the ranch in the book (Crooks, Candy, Curley and Slim). These are the characters which work on the ranch: Crooks takes care of the horses on the ranch. He has quite the history with those animals, the reason why he is called Crooks is that a horse kicked him and that left him with a crooked back. Light and Dark Imagery in Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a novel about a man named Marlow and his journey into the depths of the African Congo. Marlow is in search of a man named Kurtz, an ivory trader. Though Marlow?s physical journey seems rather simple, it takes him further into his own heart and soul than into the Congo. The setting, symbols and characters each contain light and dark images, these images shape the central theme of the novel. The river Thames is the river that brings you into Europe, civilization, while the Congo brings you into the jungle or darkness. Another important symbol in the story is the ivory. The ivory has a two fold meaning and is a central theme in the novel. Ivory is taken from the tusks of male elephants; they live in a pristine area untouched by humans. However, once the white man places a high price on the ivory, the ivory turns from good to evil. Conrad uses the ivory as a representation of the greed and corruption that is in the white mans soul. In the case of Kurtz this same greed and corruption overtook his soul, and caused his death. Each character has a special role in the novel; Kurtz and Marlow are the most important, through these two characters we are able to see how good and evil balance each other out. Marlow?s journey into the heart of darkness can also be seen as a journey into his own soul. He was in search of the darkest of objects, the ivory. Unlike Kurtz, Marlow was able to withstand the darkness from controlling him. Kurtz soul became the darkness and caused him to forget everything else there was to life. • 35. What Is Maslow s Hierarchy Of Needs Theory One of the many interesting things Maslow noticed while he worked with monkeys early in his career, was that some needs take precedence over others. For example, if you are hungry and thirsty, you will tend to try to take care of the thirst first. After all, you can do without food for weeks, but you can only do without water for a couple of days! Thirst is a stronger need than hunger. Likewise, if you are very very thirsty, but someone has put a choke hold on you and you can t breath, which is more important? The need to breathe, of course. On the other hand, sex is less powerful than any of these. Let s face it, you won t die if you don t get it! Maslow took this idea and created his now famous hierarchy of needs. Beyond ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of the preceding four levels he calls deficit needs, or D needs. If you don t have enough of something i.e. you have a deficit you feel the need. But if you get all you need, you feel nothing at all! In other words, they cease to be motivating. As the old blues song goes, you don t miss your water till your well runs dry! He also talks about these levels in terms of homeostasis. Homeostasis is the principle by which your furnace thermostat operates: When it gets too cold, it switches the heat on; When it gets too hot, it switches the heat off. In the same way, your body, when it lacks a certain substance, develops a hunger for it; When it gets enough of it, then the hunger stops. Maslow simply extends the homeostatic principle to needs, such as safety, belonging, and esteem, that we don t ordinarily think of in these terms. Maslow sees all these needs as essentially survival needs. Even love and esteem are needed for the maintenance of health. He says we all have these needs built in to us genetically, like instincts. In fact, he calls them instinctoid instinct like needs. In terms of overall development, we move through these levels a bit like stages. As newborns, our focus (if not our entire set of needs) is on the physiological. Soon, we begin to recognize that we need to be safe. Soon after that, we crave attention and affection. • 41. Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The... We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully apply this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize some utility in deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following concept. A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is known to both players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the maximization of such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the assumption that other players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the model is that maximizing a utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of uniqueness to be present in predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests on the Von Neumann Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms (defined in the Glossary): completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always exists a utility function which a player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My contention in this paper is that utility maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is too broad of an idea to be of practical use. While the axioms of payoff rationality clearly imply consistency of behaviour, since transitivity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Materialism And Rationalism Of Ancient Greek Philosophers 1)The two competing paradigms Materialism and Rationalism between ancient Greek philosophers could be narrowed down into two categories. The two concepts related back to the main question; what concept is primary? Physical or conceptual. The materialism paradigm was centered around the belief that matter is an essential component in nature and that the world is just matter in motion. All things are a result of material interaction. Similar to the Pythagoreans rationalists believed that thought was related to math. One similarity between the two paradigms is that they are both monist models of reality. Monism is a core component in philosophy and relates back to various paradigms. The material monism solely focusses on the role matter plays in the world. Everything in our lives is somehow made up of matter. Without it, we would not be able to have mental interactions. Whereas rational monism relies on the mind. Every experience we have in life leads to a greater sense of knowledge and makes us believe that our mind is more trustworthy than our sense. 2) Plato s simile of the line in Book VI represents the platonic paradigm by documenting the levels of forms. The platonic paradigm is focused around the belief that there is a perfect vision of everything and that we should strive to reach this vision. The best exercise we can do is to continue to strive towards the ideal image set before us. There is a simian virus known as siv (simian immunodeficiency virus) that is closely related to hiv and has been found in  species of African primates, ranging from various species of monkey (e.g., Blue monkey, L Hoest monkey) to mangabeys (e.g., red capped mangabey), colobus, baboons, mandrills, and chimpanzees. Both hiv and siv are considered to be retroviruses, containing rna instead of dna as their genetic material. Because the virus must insert its genetic material into a host cell to take over that host cell, a retrovirus has to convert its rna back into dna form. Only after this backstep (hence the term retro ) occurs, can the virus successfully insert its genetic material (now in dna form) into the host s dna. rna is slightly different from dna. rna contains only one genetic strand, whereas dna is a doubly stranded molecule. In addition, the sugars of these molecules are slightly different. dna contains the sugar deoxyribose while rna contains the sugar ribose. In both cases, the sugars act as the backbone for the molecule and provide a place for the bases to attach. The bases determine the order of amino acids and thus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was some of the biggest and quickest changes I ve ever had to deal with and it wasn t easy especially at ages 8 through 11. I was excited because that meant I d get to leave the new school behind , along with the mean people and start over. The schools in California were definitely a lot more different than the schools in Idaho, one difference being that the schools in California were more outdoors with bungalows. I also realized there was much more hispanics in California than there was in Idaho. I was beginning my last year of elementary in a new place and then going on to middle school which was exciting. What I learned in this new school with these new people in a completely different state was that being myself was probably the most important thing in life. I didn t enjoy the feeling of having to put other people s wants and needs over my own, that wasn t helping me at all. I made a lot of friends in 5th grade because they liked me for who I was, not for who I pretended to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
