1. Survey Analysis
Question 1 asked who their favourite rap artist was.
The answers were able to be typed so there was no
restriction.
This is helpful to my music magazine construction as it
gives me an idea of the sort of people my audience like.
Therefore, I am able to look into them and use
elements of the artists’ fashion, themes and life to
make a believable and realistic design.
It may also be helpful as I can include these people in
the cover lines so that the target audience has someone
they can relate to.
For example, ‘Drake’ appeared more than once so it
implies he is a popular artist which would draw people
in.
2. The second question was about the costings
of the magazine.
This is so the magazine will be appealing to
my audience.
If the price is too high, it wouldn’t sell as no
one would want to pay for that.
For example, £6 is too high as no one voted to
pay for that at most.
It shows the most popular price was the
cheapest at under £2. This has led me to
believe a price of £1.99 would be best as it is
very affordable and sells for the price that the
majority of people would pay for.
3. My third question was asked in order to make my
contents page as clear as possible.
Those that answered had the choice of having the
contents set out in themes or being presented in
chronological order.
The most popular option was themes so I will be
doing this instead of listing the numbers in order.
It helps to make the contents look more interesting
as it will have subtitles for each theme in the
magazine.
Also, it will allow easier navigation because people
can easily find what they’re specifically looking for
quickly, under the heading.
4. What additional topics would you like in a music
magazine was the question asked here.
This question was asked in order to find out what types
of text people like to read the most within a magazine.
This would help my contents page as I know what to
include and what not to include.
‘Biography’ wasn’t voted on at all, indicating no one
would read that so it isn’t wanted and wont be
included.
Alternatively, ‘New Releases’ and ‘Advice’ were both
highly popular so they will be used.
5. In order to know what colours to base my music
magazine around, this question had to be asked.
The choice of ‘dark’ proved to be popular so I
will be going for darker colours such as navy
blue, blacks and reds.
Black and White was also an option but not as
many people went for that.
The other options wont be considered as they
got 0 votes in the survey conducted.
6. To know what kind of language to use on the magazine, the
front cover especially, this question was important.
It shows that everyone preferred for it to be informal over
formal so I will make sure the language used does this.
This could be because the magazines are read for
entertainment purposes, as shown later on in the survey.
Therefore, people want to be able to enjoy the read so
elements of humour and slang words will be used to
achieve this.
To counteract the formality, less informative text will be
used so the purpose of entertainment is clear.
7. As a decider for my rap magazine’s
masthead, question 7 was helpful.
It shows that the most voted for option was
‘Beats’ and in second place, came ‘Flow’.
Therefore, I will consider both of these
options as they are both close to being first.
The least popular was ‘R.A.P’, which means
this one, along with the other less popular
options will be ruled out.
8. The setting has to be considered for the photos
being taken.
Answers for this consisted mainly of graffiti
related places such as skate parks.
Therefore, I will go to a place which has a
graphited wall to replicate the ideas and end up
with photos which are expected to be in rap
magazines.
These places connote rap so it’s important I use
a selection from here, especially the repeated
ones as it indicates they’re often related to the
genre.
9. To become clear on what the audience want to gain
from the magazine, I asked this as a question in the
survey.
Clearly, entertainment purposes are the most popular
so it works nicely with the magazine being informal as
they pair together.
The options following the lead had the same amount
of votes, implying they are of equal importance after
entertainment.
Freebies and offers are wanted, so a puff will be
included to cover this.
To feel part of a community is wanted but there’s
nothing specific needed to do to achieve this as the
whole magazine is dedicated to the ‘rap community’.
Personal identity is important for people too which
follows the same reasoning.
10. Again, to help with the photos which are going to be
taken, clothing and fashion is important to consider.
This is because for a high sense of verisimilitude, the
actors will need to be identifiable with the genre.
One way of achieving this is through mise en scene so
what they wear has to be expected for a rap artist.
The responses show that ‘baggy’ clothing such as track
suits and hoodies are related to rap so these will be used.
‘Chains’ is also another possibility so if available, these
will be used too.
Additionally, a cap such as a snapback could be used as
well as branded clothing.
This way, all options are considered and can be spread
out of the pages so that the front cover isn’t confusing
and still looks professional.
