2. Initial ideas for the title of the magazine
I have not chosen a name for my music magazine yet, because I work in a team with Christopher. He and I have not
agreed to any titles, because we have not shared any names with each other. I have thought about the names
‘FLASHING’ and ‘SHINES’. I thought about ‘Flashing’ because it shows that there is something special that nobody
knows yet. The people will be flashing (browsing) through the magazine. I want to show people the things that they
don’t know very fast.
When I was thinking about ‘Shines’, I was thinking about all the celebrities who were not as noticed as others and
this would make them shine out of the group. It would be too mainstream to just pick out any well-known celebrity,
because they already have a lot of attention. It’s time for others to shine now.
When we are going to choose a title, we should think about:
1. Why we want to have this title, if it doesn’t mean anything and is not eye-catching, why would you choose it?
2. What we are going to do with the contents and the title, do they have anything in common?
3. How are we going to make it a catching thing? Will the title be loved by others?
3. Choice of genre
Christopher and I chose to have a pop music genre. I agreed to make a pop music magazine because the genre is
very wide and people know what to expect. This makes it a challenge for us, because the people who are
expecting a pop music magazine from us, also expect it to be just like a real pop magazine. This is the main reason
why I’ve agreed to it as I like to take on challenges and (I hope) to exceed the expectations from those people.
When choosing pop music, you don’t have much choice. It’s obviously going to be a colourful magazine which will
include some boy bands and male and female celebrities with a lot of basic colours. Making the magazine with a lot
of colours also helps us with our genre. When people expect a pop music magazine, they also expect something for
little children, that’s why there are so many colours on them. The genre ‘pop’ itself is also preferred when people
want to buy a magazine. This enhances our chances of selling our magazine.
4. Target audience
Our choice of genre is pop music. Therefore, we should try to attract as many people as we can. I think that
our target audience should be 10-18 year olds. This target audience allows us to think as small kids and
older teenagers. The ages 10-18 mostly like the same artists which is a good thing for us, we don’t have to
look out for what and what not to put in the magazine.
5. Initial content of the whole magazine
My initial ideas for the whole magazine is to put in a lot of information about some other celebrities who are not
recognised as much as the famous ones. (E.g. - Katy Perry) When writing down the information, we should place
some pictures of them for people to understand who they are and what they’ve done for us that we didn’t know
ourselves!
When supplying the information, we should know what kind of information the audience wants. Interviews, the
music they’ve made, the films they’ve starred in or even their shoe size. Some people, however, are not interested
in the types of information magazines supply. They drool over the pictures and other gossip stories.
6. Initial ideas for the front cover
I would take a picture of a person standing with a hat on their head and their hand on it as well to look stylish. The
colours of the fonts of the magazine would be mainly yellow, green and orange to show that our magazine is for all
types of people. It will look more like a girls’ magazine, but that is because most of the pop magazine’s targets are
girls.
The cover image should be about 2 columns wide and half of the picture should be behind a column which has
some information about the celebrity.
7. Initial ideas for contents page
The contents page should include one or two images of a celebrity with a microphone or an instrument to show
what will be in the magazine. The pictures in the contents page shows people what the magazine is going to have
in it. People don’t want to see some basic fonts with basic smileys and pictures with terrible graphics. We need to
put our time and effort in it to find the fonts we want to use, the font size and think about how we want to present it.
We could have 2 columns next to each other on the lower half of the page with two or three pictures underneath it.
On the upper half of the page, we could place an image which covers the whole upper-left side and some important
things as contents on the upper-right side.
8. Initial ideas for double page spread
The double page spread should include a large picture of another celebrity or celebrities. The left side of the dps
should be covered with the image while on the right side there should be some text in two to three columns, a
quote above it and edited with different fonts to give some more effect on the image.
9. Initial ideas for photographs
We are not professionals or anything near that, so we’re going to try our best to take some pictures of ourselves and other
groups which will allow us to experiment with others and take our time to take a lot of pictures, make different kinds of them
and getting to learn the skill of taking photographs.
On the front cover we could place a picture of a person standing with a hat on their head and their hand on it as well to
look stylish. The angle used for this kind of photograph would be a low angle shot. We have learnt about the
different kinds of shots and now we are going to be put to the test!
On the contents page, I would include one or two images of a celebrity with a microphone or an instrument to show
what will be in the magazine. The shot would be a medium shot to show the person’s face and to get people
familiar with the face and get attracted to it. Also, the item they’re holding will have something to do with one of the
contents on that page.
The double page spread will have one large image which will be a two shot and it will be of a boy and a girl
laughing, talking to each other, singing together or doing something crazy like pulling crazy faces underneath their
hoodies.
