1. Skate Park The aesthetics to this location will
be relevant to the genre as they
often have graphited walls.
The symbols on the wall often
come from gangs which would
signify a sense of belonging, which
is what the target audience also
seek.
It can be busy as they are
used by many people so
taking a picture without
interruptions may be
difficult.
The gratified wall idea links to the
‘Wordplay’ magazine which is
devoted to UK hip hop, rap and the
graffiti culture, implying the two go
hand in hand.
This means that it is expected so it’s
good to include as they relate to
each other through the
connotations they have.
2. Tunnel This location has urban vibes so it
connotes to the genre.
It will also allow for creative shots
as shadows can be made to create
a ‘threatening’ mood.
As it is outdoors, there is
no electricity so charging
any devices that require it
wont be able to happen.
In ‘Q’ magazine, there is a photo of a
rapper in front of a cracked wall,
which would be found in a tunnel.
Although it is not clear what the
background is of, the cracks can be
found in tunnel walls.
Differences are that the location is
not clear in the Q magazine as the
shot doesn’t allow the audience to
see from a distance.
3. Car Park For the shot, the actor will stand
out well against the background
as a particular car park in mind is
the highest point within the
building and so has no roof.
Therefore, the natural lighting will
help to focus the viewer on the
dark clothing the actor will be
wearing.
Weaknesses include the
fact it is outside as the
lighting has to be specific
in order to be effective. If
it isn’t bright enough, then
the dark clothing will not
stand out as much.
However, this can be
helped with editing in
Photoshop.
In the ‘XXL’ magazine, it shows two
rap artists stood by a car. This image
takes up the entirety of the page as
it is used as a poster. Along side this
image there’s an interview.
Even though it is not in a car park, it
still has the element of vehicles.
This help to connote wealth which is
a common theme of rap songs and
the stigma around the artists, being
rich. The image doesn’t always have
to be relevant to what the article is
about as long as it have some
relation; the rappers are being
interviewed about here.
