Samantha Harris conducted a survey to inform the design of her music magazine, receiving 33 responses. She asked questions about readers' demographics, favorite artists, willingness to pay, desired magazine features, and more. The majority of respondents were aged 16-18, Harris' primary target audience. Most wanted to see breakthrough artists on the cover and popular artists like Arctic Monkeys and The 1975 featured. Readers preferred the magazine priced at £2.50-£3.00 and include tickets to concerts or festivals as prizes. The survey helped Harris customize her magazine for maximum appeal.

Survey analysis
1. Survey Analysis
Samantha Harris
I got a total of 33 responses from this survey to get a basic idea of my target audience and how to make it appeal to them. I
used a wide range of questions to get a better understanding using questions such as ‘how much are you willing to pay for a
magazine?’ And ‘What are your favourite Indie Artists?’
2. I used this question to understand the age range of the people who completed
my magazine, so that whilst making my magazine I can keep in mind that this
info is mainly been provided by this certain age range.
The most chosen category is 16-18, this age range will be my primary target
audience as I know what they want to see within a music magazine so
therefore it will be more appealing to the audience and more sell-able.
This question is designed to help me when I am producing and creating
my magazine, so when I am producing my front cover I know what kind of
artist to use which would be the most effective.
The majority of the vote wanted to see an breakthrough artist as the front
cover so therefore I will use one of my own models to place on the front
cover as no one will know who they are and I will act like they are not well
known and are a breakthrough artist so that this will appeal to the
audience but as people still wanted to see an established artist, in the sell-lines
I will add well known artists such as the arctic monkeys etc. so
therefore I appeal to all the target audience.
3. The aim of this question was to help me find out the artists that
were most popular with my target audience so that I can
incorporate them into my magazine.
I am going to place the most popular artists on my magazine by
putting them in the sell-lines and incorporating them within the
contents page as this would make my magazine more successful
and popular.
The three artists that were most popular artists were Arctic
Monkeys, The 1975 and Lana Del Ray so these are the three
main artists that I would be talking about the most.

4. This wasn’t a very important question but I incorporated it into
my survey so that I would know whether to place a subscribe cut
out on my contents page. I will not be incorporating a subscriber
box into my magazine as a large majority of my target audience
doesn’t subscribe to magazines so therefore I see no point of
doing so. I will add on my contents page a ‘Subscribe now’ text
with the social media so that there is an option for it they did
want to subscribe as 5 people do subscribe to magazine. For
those people who do subscribe I am going to have a special front
cover for the magazine- where there aren’t any sell-lines of text
on the cover as they have already purchased the magazine- this
makes it more collectable.
This was a very important question as it would tell me how
much I my target audience would be willing to pay for a
magazine. I chose to add three categories to this question
which had around a 50p difference. The most voted category
was £2.50-£3.00 so therefore I think I will make my magazine
be at the price of £2.50 as this sounds more appealing than
£3.00 which would then draw the audience in more. The third
category £3.50-£4.00 only got 3 votes out of 31 so therefore no
one would really be willing to pay this much so that is another
reason why I chose the lowest price out of the most popular
voted category.
5. This question was designed to help me create a certain sell-line or a freebie that I would
place on the contents page to draw the customers in. I asked the people to choose 2
freebies that they would like in a magazine. The most popular result was ‘Tickets to a
concert’ followed by ‘Tickets to a festival’ and thirdly ‘Meet an artist’, the freebie people
liked the least was to win an ipod. I am going to use the ‘Tickets to a concert/Festival’ as
these results were very close so therefore I put them together so that the audience can
have a surprise of what they are going to get. I will use this on my front cover as a sell-line
such as Win a chance to go to a concert or festival to make my magazine more appealing
to the audience.
This question was made purely to see whether I should
incorporate some tweets into my contents page. The most
answered category was ‘yes’ which 27 of the 33 voted for so
therefore I will incorporate some of the readers tweets into the
magazine to make the readers feel more involved in the
magazine and can relate more to it again bringing in more
readers.
6. This question was to help me decide and see how often my
target audience reads and purchases magazines, the most
answered category was ‘Monthly’ with 13 out of 33 so therefore
I will make my magazine a monthly edition. I will display this by
stating the month that it is realised in instead of the date of the
month etc. e.g. May 2014.
This question was designed to help me when making my
magazine to see what picture/ camera shot would appeal more
to my target audience and would make them want to buy it. In
this question I used four different category's which are used
very frequently in a lot of famous magazines. The most
answered one was ‘Mid shot’ with 14 votes out off 33 where
closely behind is full body shot with 13 votes. But I will use a
mid shot as these are used most within magazine and would
make mine look more professional and sophisticated.
7. This question would be useful to me when I'm making my magazine
and I am making my double page spread as I can refer back to this
and see what my target audience wanted to see and read. The most
popular category is ‘Interviews’ so with my main model I will be
doing an interview with them so that I meet the readers needs and
expectations again making it more appealing and professional. I will
not be making a double page spread about competitions as this only
received 6 votes but I will still mention this in the contents page so
that it will appeal to all kinds of people.
