From these results we can clearly see that the age ‘under 18’
outshone the other options and there was no one older than 24
that completed the survey. There were 33 people under the age
of 18, which was 86.84% of the whole and the rest were
between the ages of 18 and 24, this was the other 5 people that
completed the survey (which was 13.16% ). This shows that
music magazines do appeal more to younger people which
shows a younger target audience, however these results are
biased because most of the people that completed this survey
were students from my media class and friends which are around
the same age as me evidently. On the other hand, this means
that my final product will have to appeal more to younger people
rather than older and this is good because I can easily relate to
this and include different things that the younger audience
would be interested in and not the older people. Furthermore,
because the audience is younger I can use informal language that
they will understand and make it more chatty rather than
informative.
These results clearly show that the majority of
participants who took my survey were female. 28
out of the 38 people who answered this question
said they were female, which is 73.68%, whereas
10 out of the 38 people said they were male, which
is 26.32%. Similarly to the age question, this
question is biased too as the majority of the people
who took my survey were the people in my media
class and the majority of them are females. These
results suggest that I should make my final product
a little more girly to appeal to the majority of the
female audiences and neat, however, I personally
don’t want to do that as I want to keep the gender
appeal general to not assume anything because my
further results show that some of these females
don’t like the typical gossip and the usual pop
music that everyone stereotypes every teenage girl
to.
Most of the respondents had a different answer to the type of music
genre that they liked the most, this is shown through these results.
The option with the highest number of participants agreeing was the
‘other’ option which could suggest anything. This is a flaw in the
making of this question as I can’t make a magazine with all the other
genres in because that would be too much information in one
magazine and it wouldn’t include as much information for each
individual other genre as the target audience would want, If I were to
remake this survey I wouldn’t create a ‘other’ option for this
question as it just gets confusing and I would stick to a specific few
genres and re-word the question to “Out of all these music genres,
which is your favourite?”, this would force the participant to give me
a specific genre to work with and I’d probably get better results
overall for this question. There were 10 out of the 38 participants
who answered with ‘other’ which is 26.32% (the highest), the second
highest genre was ‘alternative’ with 9 people choosing it, with
23.68%. The third highest genre was a combination of ‘Rap’ and
‘Pop’, both with 8 people each choosing them with them both having
21.05% each. The music genre with the least votes was ‘Metal’ with
only one person going for it with 2.63% and the second to least
voted genre was ‘country’ with 2 votes equalling to 5.26%. I would
like to ignore the ‘other’ option as I need specific answers so the next
genre for the final product would be ‘Alternative’ but I’m personally
not a fan of alternative music so I will go with ‘rap’ as my final music
genre as I’m interested in rap music and so I could say a lot about it.
The most popular thing that attracts people to a music
magazine is ’the artists on the front cover’ with 27 out of the
38 people that voted for this, meaning that just a little over
71% of the respondents mainly buy magazines depending on
who is featured on the front cover of them. The other options
weren’t as popular as ‘the artists on the cover’ option, with
‘colours’ and ‘the headline’ both being the second popular
option with them each getting 3 votes so each are 7.69% of the
whole. Only one person chose ‘other’ as their option which
doesn't affect the overall result greatly with it being only
2.63%. Finally ‘freebies’ and ‘sub-articles’ were chosen twice
each which shows that freebies aren’t actually influencing
people into purchasing a music magazine and that the sub-
articles are only there on the side and not many people are
interested in them or buy the magazine just for those small
articles. For my final product I will have to find out what kind of
artists teenagers are really into at the moment that fit the
genre that I will eventually go for so that it appeals to them
more and attracts them towards the magazine.
According to these results the majority of people
wouldn’t spend more than £4 on a music magazine
with 24 out of 37 people willing to spend between £2
and £4 which is just a little below 65% of the
respondents and 9 out of the 37 going for less than
£2. This could however be because many of the
respondents were from my media class and so are
between the ages of 16 and 18 and they could be on a
budget so may not be able to spend more than that.
There were a few people who would typically spend
over £4, 3 people said that they would spend between
£4.01 and £6 (7.89% of the respondents) and just one
willing to spend £8 or over (2.63%). This shows that
not many people are up for buying very expensive
music magazines. The price of a magazine depends on
the amount of work that went into the magazine and
the profit from it but since the final product won’t
actually go up for sale I will definitely keep it under £4
to show that this magazine would also be suited for
the target audience of teenagers (as seen on slide 2)
and that they would be able to actually afford it.
From this it is evident that people prefer to see and
associate music magazines with vibrant colours
rather than pastel colours, which would be suited to
very girly magazines rather than ones to suit all
genders. The vibrant one is clearly the highest
ranked colour as 21 out of 37 with 56.76% which is
almost 50% more than the number of times that the
option ‘pastel’ was chosen, with it only having 2
people choose it (5.41%). The ’neutral’ colour option
was close to the ‘vibrant’ one as it got 14 out of 37
votes and so 37.84%. For the final design I will most
likely go with a vibrant colour look so it appeals to
the target audience more and I will go with a specific
colour scheme that will be remembered by the
reader.
This question allowed me to see what the reason was for
people buying music magazines in the first place and from these
results I can conclude that people mainly like to see Interviews,
Top music charts and Upcoming events and therefore I will need
to include a lot of that content in my magazine so that it fits
with what my target audience would like to see. 13 out of 38
respondents (34.21%) said that they would like to see
interviews in music magazines, which I will have to create but
that couldn’t be a problem. 10 out of 38 (26.32%) said Top
music charts, I personally wouldn’t have gone with this option
as it can easily be found on everyone’s Spotify accounts,
however some people do like a paper copy of the charts so I will
have to take that into account. A further 9 out of 38 (23.68%)
respondents said that they would like to read about Upcoming
events, I will therefore have to research events around the area
that link with the type of genre that my magazine will be about.
The content options that people wanted to see least was
‘reviews of events’ and ‘articles’ which is a little confusing
because all magazines need articles otherwise they won’t be
any good. However I think this was a flaw with the question
style as people could only choose one option and they might’ve
wanted to choose multiple things and they wouldn’t think of
‘articles’ first.
Surprisingly not many people purchase magazines for
the freebies, with only 2 out of 37 respondents chose
‘freebies’ as their option choice (5.41%). The majority
of the people said that they buy magazines purely for
entertainment with 70.27% of them choosing this (26
out of 37 respondents). ‘To keep informed’ was
chosen by 9 respondents (24.32%) this means that for
my final product I will have to include a lot of
information about artists, bands and events but also
make sure it’s not too informative but interesting and
entertaining so that they don’t get bored quickly.
These results show that people don’t buy music
magazines as often as you would imagine with the
majority of respondents saying ‘other’ of which answers
consisted of “Never” or “Yearly”. This was a flaw in the
whole survey process as some of the respondents
weren’t as interested in music magazines and so it was
biased as I asked anyone who was willing to complete
the survey, so they may not have actually ever bought a
music magazine. 19 out of the 37 people (51.35%) said
other and there were many side comments for this
option. The next most popular option was ‘monthly’ with
12 out of 37 respondents (32.43%) choosing this option.
After that was the option ‘weekly’ which received 5
votes, which is 13.51% out of the whole. Finally the least
chosen option was ‘daily’ with only 1 person saying this
(2.70%). This surprised me a bit because I don’t think
there’s a magazine that releases content or anything else
that is a paper copy daily.
These results show that people prefer their magazines to be fairly organised with 6 out of 37 respondents choosing option ’10’ which is
very organised, 6 of them choosing ‘9’ on the scale, 4 of them going for ‘8’, 8 of them choosing ‘7’ which was the option with the
highest number of responses with 21.62% of the respondents choosing it. 6 people went with ‘6’ and 4 respondents going for ‘5’ which
is neither organised or messy but a combination of it and finally 2 people chose ‘4’. This shows me that for my final design I will need to
use columns most of the time but also not be afraid to go outside of them and write around and so not following the usual music
magazines codes and conventions of the columns. This would appeal to the target audience more as it will reflect each piece and story
that is written and show the connections between them.

Audience research

  • 1.
  • 2. From these results we can clearly see that the age ‘under 18’ outshone the other options and there was no one older than 24 that completed the survey. There were 33 people under the age of 18, which was 86.84% of the whole and the rest were between the ages of 18 and 24, this was the other 5 people that completed the survey (which was 13.16% ). This shows that music magazines do appeal more to younger people which shows a younger target audience, however these results are biased because most of the people that completed this survey were students from my media class and friends which are around the same age as me evidently. On the other hand, this means that my final product will have to appeal more to younger people rather than older and this is good because I can easily relate to this and include different things that the younger audience would be interested in and not the older people. Furthermore, because the audience is younger I can use informal language that they will understand and make it more chatty rather than informative.
  • 3. These results clearly show that the majority of participants who took my survey were female. 28 out of the 38 people who answered this question said they were female, which is 73.68%, whereas 10 out of the 38 people said they were male, which is 26.32%. Similarly to the age question, this question is biased too as the majority of the people who took my survey were the people in my media class and the majority of them are females. These results suggest that I should make my final product a little more girly to appeal to the majority of the female audiences and neat, however, I personally don’t want to do that as I want to keep the gender appeal general to not assume anything because my further results show that some of these females don’t like the typical gossip and the usual pop music that everyone stereotypes every teenage girl to.
  • 4. Most of the respondents had a different answer to the type of music genre that they liked the most, this is shown through these results. The option with the highest number of participants agreeing was the ‘other’ option which could suggest anything. This is a flaw in the making of this question as I can’t make a magazine with all the other genres in because that would be too much information in one magazine and it wouldn’t include as much information for each individual other genre as the target audience would want, If I were to remake this survey I wouldn’t create a ‘other’ option for this question as it just gets confusing and I would stick to a specific few genres and re-word the question to “Out of all these music genres, which is your favourite?”, this would force the participant to give me a specific genre to work with and I’d probably get better results overall for this question. There were 10 out of the 38 participants who answered with ‘other’ which is 26.32% (the highest), the second highest genre was ‘alternative’ with 9 people choosing it, with 23.68%. The third highest genre was a combination of ‘Rap’ and ‘Pop’, both with 8 people each choosing them with them both having 21.05% each. The music genre with the least votes was ‘Metal’ with only one person going for it with 2.63% and the second to least voted genre was ‘country’ with 2 votes equalling to 5.26%. I would like to ignore the ‘other’ option as I need specific answers so the next genre for the final product would be ‘Alternative’ but I’m personally not a fan of alternative music so I will go with ‘rap’ as my final music genre as I’m interested in rap music and so I could say a lot about it.
  • 5. The most popular thing that attracts people to a music magazine is ’the artists on the front cover’ with 27 out of the 38 people that voted for this, meaning that just a little over 71% of the respondents mainly buy magazines depending on who is featured on the front cover of them. The other options weren’t as popular as ‘the artists on the cover’ option, with ‘colours’ and ‘the headline’ both being the second popular option with them each getting 3 votes so each are 7.69% of the whole. Only one person chose ‘other’ as their option which doesn't affect the overall result greatly with it being only 2.63%. Finally ‘freebies’ and ‘sub-articles’ were chosen twice each which shows that freebies aren’t actually influencing people into purchasing a music magazine and that the sub- articles are only there on the side and not many people are interested in them or buy the magazine just for those small articles. For my final product I will have to find out what kind of artists teenagers are really into at the moment that fit the genre that I will eventually go for so that it appeals to them more and attracts them towards the magazine.
  • 6. According to these results the majority of people wouldn’t spend more than £4 on a music magazine with 24 out of 37 people willing to spend between £2 and £4 which is just a little below 65% of the respondents and 9 out of the 37 going for less than £2. This could however be because many of the respondents were from my media class and so are between the ages of 16 and 18 and they could be on a budget so may not be able to spend more than that. There were a few people who would typically spend over £4, 3 people said that they would spend between £4.01 and £6 (7.89% of the respondents) and just one willing to spend £8 or over (2.63%). This shows that not many people are up for buying very expensive music magazines. The price of a magazine depends on the amount of work that went into the magazine and the profit from it but since the final product won’t actually go up for sale I will definitely keep it under £4 to show that this magazine would also be suited for the target audience of teenagers (as seen on slide 2) and that they would be able to actually afford it.
  • 7. From this it is evident that people prefer to see and associate music magazines with vibrant colours rather than pastel colours, which would be suited to very girly magazines rather than ones to suit all genders. The vibrant one is clearly the highest ranked colour as 21 out of 37 with 56.76% which is almost 50% more than the number of times that the option ‘pastel’ was chosen, with it only having 2 people choose it (5.41%). The ’neutral’ colour option was close to the ‘vibrant’ one as it got 14 out of 37 votes and so 37.84%. For the final design I will most likely go with a vibrant colour look so it appeals to the target audience more and I will go with a specific colour scheme that will be remembered by the reader.
  • 8. This question allowed me to see what the reason was for people buying music magazines in the first place and from these results I can conclude that people mainly like to see Interviews, Top music charts and Upcoming events and therefore I will need to include a lot of that content in my magazine so that it fits with what my target audience would like to see. 13 out of 38 respondents (34.21%) said that they would like to see interviews in music magazines, which I will have to create but that couldn’t be a problem. 10 out of 38 (26.32%) said Top music charts, I personally wouldn’t have gone with this option as it can easily be found on everyone’s Spotify accounts, however some people do like a paper copy of the charts so I will have to take that into account. A further 9 out of 38 (23.68%) respondents said that they would like to read about Upcoming events, I will therefore have to research events around the area that link with the type of genre that my magazine will be about. The content options that people wanted to see least was ‘reviews of events’ and ‘articles’ which is a little confusing because all magazines need articles otherwise they won’t be any good. However I think this was a flaw with the question style as people could only choose one option and they might’ve wanted to choose multiple things and they wouldn’t think of ‘articles’ first.
  • 9. Surprisingly not many people purchase magazines for the freebies, with only 2 out of 37 respondents chose ‘freebies’ as their option choice (5.41%). The majority of the people said that they buy magazines purely for entertainment with 70.27% of them choosing this (26 out of 37 respondents). ‘To keep informed’ was chosen by 9 respondents (24.32%) this means that for my final product I will have to include a lot of information about artists, bands and events but also make sure it’s not too informative but interesting and entertaining so that they don’t get bored quickly.
  • 10. These results show that people don’t buy music magazines as often as you would imagine with the majority of respondents saying ‘other’ of which answers consisted of “Never” or “Yearly”. This was a flaw in the whole survey process as some of the respondents weren’t as interested in music magazines and so it was biased as I asked anyone who was willing to complete the survey, so they may not have actually ever bought a music magazine. 19 out of the 37 people (51.35%) said other and there were many side comments for this option. The next most popular option was ‘monthly’ with 12 out of 37 respondents (32.43%) choosing this option. After that was the option ‘weekly’ which received 5 votes, which is 13.51% out of the whole. Finally the least chosen option was ‘daily’ with only 1 person saying this (2.70%). This surprised me a bit because I don’t think there’s a magazine that releases content or anything else that is a paper copy daily.
  • 11. These results show that people prefer their magazines to be fairly organised with 6 out of 37 respondents choosing option ’10’ which is very organised, 6 of them choosing ‘9’ on the scale, 4 of them going for ‘8’, 8 of them choosing ‘7’ which was the option with the highest number of responses with 21.62% of the respondents choosing it. 6 people went with ‘6’ and 4 respondents going for ‘5’ which is neither organised or messy but a combination of it and finally 2 people chose ‘4’. This shows me that for my final design I will need to use columns most of the time but also not be afraid to go outside of them and write around and so not following the usual music magazines codes and conventions of the columns. This would appeal to the target audience more as it will reflect each piece and story that is written and show the connections between them.
