2. Working title
The working title for my magazine is ‘Unleash The Underground’. This title links
to the genre that I’m planning on doing, which is rap, as rap is usually associated
with the underground and it makes the reader think of rap battles and unusual
things. As well as that, the ‘Unleash’ suggests that this type of genre or magazine
wouldn’t usually be accepted by many people or that there isn’t a specific
magazine to do with rap in the UK and so this magazine’s title suggests that it’s
finally going to happen and the fans can look forward to it. The title was my
original idea and uses three words rather than just one word, like normal
magazines do, this shows the originality and that it’s difference and so would
attract more audience to it and show interest in the uniqueness. The word
‘Unleash’ will be bigger than the rest of the phrase so that it’s easier for the
reader to talk about and they’ll remember it by that.
What will the magazine be called?
3. Genre of magazine
The genre of the magazine will be rap as many of my respondents in my survey
voted that they would like to see rap within the magazine and rap is the genre
which I’d like to do and write about. There also aren’t any magazines in the UK
dedicated to the genre of rap only and so I think this would bring a lot of people
forward into admitting that they enjoy rap and it would show the people that
stereotype rap with criminals, drugs and sex that it’s not all about that and it will
give them a different insight into it. Also I feel like rap music does get mentioned in
other music magazines but I don’t think that there’s enough content about it for
readers to be fully interested in them and some might say that it’s a waste of
money to buy a magazine with limited content with their interest, which is
understandable, and so I’d like to create a magazine to do with rap only for those
viewers.
What will the genre of the magazine be?
4. Cover Price and Publication Frequency
The cover price for my magazine will be £2.99 as this magazine will be a monthly
publication and therefore £2.99 will not be too much for the amount of content that
the reader will be receiving. This is also a psychological pricing method that makes the
audience feel like it’s cheaper than it actually is. As well as that, since the target
audience for this magazine is older teenagers and people in their early 20s that are
probably on a budget then this won’t be too much for them monthly as so they can stay
subscribed.
My survey shows that the respondents would prefer to spend between £2-£4 so by
going in the middle of that price it will attract the readers and appeal to them more. I
feel that if the publication is monthly then it’s ideal for the audience because if it was
weekly then it might get too expensive for them and if it’s released every second month
then the reader might forget about it and won’t buy it. The magazine will be published
on the 1st of every month, I came to this conclusion after debating between the last day
of every month and the first. If it was released at the end of every month then I could
review the events from the past month and talk about what was popular. However, my
survey shows that my audience would prefer to see Interviews and top music charts
and therefore if I released it at the start of each month then they could look ahead and
see what they would like to listen to that month and whether there are any upcoming
events that month.
How much will the magazine be? How often will it be
published?
5. Style
How will this magazine be different to other ones?
My magazine will be different to other magazines in the layout as it will contain
different elements throughout it. I will include articles from interviews as that is
what my survey respondents wanted and the most popular option for the content
of the magazine, in each edition the ‘top story/article’ will be an interview, followed
by the top music charts for that month. Every so often the magazine will offer
giveaways and every edition will have a competition within it that all readers can get
involved in, this will increase the chances of the reader buying the magazine for the
chance to get something and for the magazine company to keep subscribers.
6. Attitude
How will this magazine be presented to the audience?
‘Unleash The Underground’ magazine will be presented in a fairly organised way
with the use of columns but also occasionally going out of them, this is how
organised my respondents from my survey wanted it overall so to appeal to them
more I will follow this idea. The typical colour scheme for my magazine will be
basil green, mustard yellow and charcoal grey as these colours are what I would
associate with the rap genre. The magazines style of writing will be moderately
formal meaning that it will include some slang words to appeal to the teenagers
that it is aimed at.
7. Mission Statement
What do you aim for the magazine to achieve?
‘We have finally listened to the cries of the readers and have created a
magazine that is only revolved around rap. The mission of ‘Unleash The
Underground’ magazine is to provide unique rap content where you wouldn’t
find anywhere else, including interviews with new and older rappers to vary it
up and expose the artists.’
