To create a successful music magazine I have created a music magazine questionnaire
and have given it to twenty random people between the ages range of sixteen to
twenty four year olds, to get a firm background knowledge on what people would like
to see in my magazine , so it appeals to them .In this PowerPoint I will be analysing the
results of the questionnaire and then use the information collected to create a brief flat
plan on my music magazine.
Question 1 – Do you read magazines, if “yes” how often?Question 1 – Do you read magazines, if “yes” how often?
Question 1 analysis- First of all I wanted to find out how many times people read magazines over a certain time period. The
main chosen topics where “daily, weekly, and month”, however I also but the “only if there free” category because many
people just skim through a magazine and only read it if they find a article interesting and will not really bother buying one,
just a quick glance in the shop and they have all the information they need.
Judging from the answers given, most people prefer to read magazines monthly because there is more things to read about
on what happened in the past thirty days rather then in the last seven days . The older people who are in there mid
twenties ,read magazines daily to read the latest news before they go to work and because if they have a job they earn
money that lets them purchase a new magazine every day.
Question 2 – What kind of music genre do you like best?Question 2 – What kind of music genre do you like best?
Question 2 analysis- This was one of the main questions , as it determined which genre I based my music magazine on and all
the information inside had to relate to it . The most chosen category was “hip-hop” with seven votes compared to rock and pop
with only two votes and soul, classical and jazz in last place with no votes. When I asked people why they chose hip-hop ,they
said it’s the only music genre that relates to them and they like the upbeat rhythm to the music .So now I know that my music
magazine with be based on the hip-hop genre
Question 3 – What fonts you like ?Question 3 – What fonts you like ?
Question 3 analysis- Font type “1” was the most popular and so I will be using it as the font for my masthead , people chose
the first option because is was three-dimensional and eye catching , so the first thing the reader will see the masthead and it
is a cleaver form of instant branding .In second place was font type”2” because it was bold and big and so caught the
attention of potential buyers, the other font types weren't as eye catching and so I might use them when writing my article.
1 2 3 4
Question 4 –Which artists/bands do you prefer?Question 4 –Which artists/bands do you prefer?
Question 4 analysis- This question asked which artists or bands most teenagers liked to listen to , so my music magazine can
feature exclusive interviews and articles about them that are up-to-date on the latest gossip and by using this question I
know what artists/bands I need to put in my magazine and therefore encourage people to read them .
Many teenagers chose “JLS” because they thought they where a new band that sang a variety of songs from a different genre
within hip-hop and are young and trendy and so aspirers can follow them. Fewer people chose the “Nicki Minaj” and “flo-
Rida” option because they where older and haven't released many new singles. So to conclude I will be putting artists and
bands like “Jls,Chris Brown, Rihanna and Jay Sean” in my hip hop magazine as they are young trendy and have the best no.1
tracks currently out now.
Question 5–How much are you willing to pay for aQuestion 5–How much are you willing to pay for a
Question 5 analysis- I used this question to determine the price of my Hip-hop music magazine, because young unemployed
teenagers who are still in full-time education are not going to pay £5-£6 on a magazine .also price is a major issue when it comes
to buying ,so I used this question to decide which price I would do my magazine that will be affordable and worth every penny.
Most teenager went for the £2.50 option it is the middle in the price options givens and fewer people are likely to pay “£4+” for
a magazine so I think a reasonable price would be “£2.50”
Question 6– What colour schemes would you like to see inQuestion 6– What colour schemes would you like to see in
a music magazine?a music magazine?
1.Black, Red & Blue
2.Black, Purple & Green
3.White, Silver & Blue
4.Green, Orange & Yellow
5.Red, Silver & Gold
Question 6 Analysis -This was a simple yet ,effective question that asked people what colour scheme they would like to see a
music magazine. I used this question as first impression are the last and so the visual look of a magazine attracts some
potential buyers and so I want people opinion on some colour schemes and if they think they would look good together on a
hip-hop music magaizne.70% of teenagers said they like the combination of red, black and blue as they are bright and
youthful ,compared to green, orange and yellow , which people said was boring to look at and might appeal to the older
Question 7 –What articles would you like to read about in aQuestion 7 –What articles would you like to read about in a
music magazine?music magazine?
Question 7 analysis- This was one of my main questions as it helped me determine what my double spread article was going
to be about . Many teenagers picked the “interviews” option as, they wanted to now how celebrities live life on the other
side of the recession, as it was fascinating to see how far singers and artist have made it to where they are now compared to
when they where younger. Fewer people picked “World tours & Competitions” because they where interested in other
topics such as “New Release and reviews of the latest singles that hits to No.1 charts.
Question 8 –What type of images would you prefer to seeQuestion 8 –What type of images would you prefer to see
in a music magazine?in a music magazine?
Question 8 analysis- I used this question to ask which camera angles people preferred to see in a music magazine ,many
people chose the “mid-shot” option because they said is was nice to see a picture of a person from the waist up ,so you can
see they designer jackets or t-shirt they are wearing and less people liked close-ups because it was too zoomed in and the
last thing they want to see is a picture of a persons face that scares them .Many people chose high key lighting rather then
low-key because it looks more positive and looks as if the artist wanted their picture to be taken and look happier compared
to a picture taken in the gloomy shadows of darkness.
Question 9 –What interests you when reading a musicQuestion 9 –What interests you when reading a music
Question 9 analysis- I wanted to see what attracts people and encourages them to read a magazine , and so I will be able to
use those interests to my advantage and build on what people want to see , instead of putting in a load of information , on
something that people will just look at and then throw in the bin. Most people chose the “layout” and the “article” option ,
because if the topics mentioned are boring then what the point in continuing to read . So when making my music magazine I
will put more interesting article and change the layout and help make my magzine stand out from the shelf and look more
Question 10 –What would you like the adverts in a musicQuestion 10 –What would you like the adverts in a music
magazine to be about?magazine to be about?
Question 10 analysis- I wanted to see what adverts people wanted to see in a music magazine, because I am doing hip-hop
magazine aimed at the younger generation I gave the options for “designer clothes” and “job enrolments” as many teenagers
as now looking for part time jobs ,or spend all the spare time trying to make a fashion statement . The majority of people
chose the job enrolments options as they wanted the freedom of money and plus parents made them start earning for they
can invest in their future ,e.g. university savings.
