Results and Conclusions
Out of the 35 people who answered my questionnaire, 80% were within my target
audience age range of 16-25. This means that my results for the rest of the
questionnaire are valid because most of the people who answered are within the
age range I need to know about.
The majority of the people who answered the questionnaire were females. I think it would
be easier for me to change my target audience to 16-25 year old women because then I
know what they expect within the magazine more than I know what males expect.
Because 10 people answered £2 and 6 people answered £3.50, I decided to
meet half way and put the price of my magazine at £2.75 because this isn’t far
off my research prices of £2.60 and this means my magazine will be able to
compete with other magazines because of the similarity in price.
I would have to publish the magazine monthly because this got 65% of
the votes so it shows that it is more appealing to the target audience to
purchase monthly rather than the other options.
The most popular answer was for free gig tickets, which means I will have to use that
as a promotion on the front of my magazine cover as incentive for the reader to buy
the magazine and so it is more appealing to them.
Most people in my survey go to gigs a few times within the year which means
I should include gig reviews and tours quite prominently in the magazine
because these type of articles would spark their interest.
Oasis got the most votes for this question which means I should focus on
making my magazine with the band in mind. This means making the artists
reflect similar attitudes and views to oasis or simply putting bands like oasis on
the cover to draw the readers attention. Arctic Monkeys and Catfish and the
Bottlemen also got a high number of votes which means I shall also keep these
in mind when thinking of names to put on the cover because these bands seem
to be very popular and would interest my target audience.
The Wombats, The Kooks, Two Door Cinema Club and The Stone roses all
managed to reach 10 votes each which shows me that these may not be the
most popular bands but my target audience have heard of them and like to
listen to them. I should again use this and make my magazine with these bands
in mind.
The word “cool” was reiterated
throughout this question and words
which suggest that the music is calming
were also quite repetitive. Some of the
words used, described the music as
alternative. This suggests that they like
the music because of the different
sound it has.
The general mood I sensed from the
answers to this question were relaxed. I
also got the impression that the music is
liked for its individuality and the way it
makes the audience feel. This means
that I could use some of these words or
use them to help influence the magazine
name.
I would choose a name which would run
along the lines of something edgy and
cool due to the results I obtained.
Ideas
• Indie Sound
• Alternative Sound
• Your Vibe
• Different Vibes
The results show that the most popular colours were Black white and red. This
can help me determine what colour scheme for the cover because when the
audience see this colour scheme then they're more likely to recognise it as an
Indie rock magazine. As an alternative, I could use these colours on my double
page spread because then the reader wont be distracted by lots of colours on
the page and they can concentrate on the article. I could even use this colour
scheme throughout the magazine to keep it consistent.
Clearly the audience prefer a shorter magazine with nearly 53% choosing 50
pages. However, 23% did say that they would prefer 70 pages and I think that if
the magazine is full of suitable information that is tailored to interest them,
they shouldn’t be put off by the amount of pages in the magazine. Therefore, I
think that 60 pages is a suitable number to fit all the relevant content.
After asking this question, it is clear to see that the majority (80%)
of the people who answered the survey would like to read articles
about new bands. This means I should include something on the
cover about new bands to interest them. I should also include
some articles on the contents page about new and upcoming bands
because it clearly sparks an interest in them so I want to keep the
audience engaged with content that they want.
The most popular answers for this question were: top 10 most downloaded songs,
Leeds festival best bits and the months best gigs.
Judging from the feedback given, the audience would also like to see top 10 most
underrated bands which I think is a good idea because it works in contrast to the
other article about overrated bands and gives more opportunities for new bands to
be recognised ( which is something they voted for in the previous question).
All festival best bits is a good idea for an article because it broadens the
possibilities of people liking or being able to relate to the article because not a lot
of people will have been to Leeds festival so keeping the options open is better for
my audience to be able to relate.
With a majority vote of 91%, informal type of writing won the vote. Some of
the reasons for voting for this answer were because the audience feel more
relaxed reading it and because it uses humour which makes them feel more
chilled.
This means that when I write up the double page spread on my artist then I
should be informal but still informative to make sure I get the information
across. A more relaxed style of writing will allow my audience to relate more
also and want tot carry on reading.
Some of the most repetitive answers about the dislikes of an indie rock mag
was that they contain too much irrelevant advertisements that have nothing
to do with indie rock.
To avoid this, I will only include adverts that have some relevance to indie
rock like Spotify ads promoting an offer on a sign up. This has relevance to
indie rock because you can follow indie rock playlists and listen to the music
you want.
Another issue that was raised was that the content is very similar throughout
different issues. To avoid this, I will include lots of feature articles and use
the answers from previous questions to help design a contents pages full of
interesting articles that the audience would like.
People tend to be interested by the images in an indie magazine so I will use them quite
prominently in the contents to keep them engaged. Gossip was also repeated in this question so I
will include an article to suit the needs of these people. Articles on gigs was a popular answer so I
will take this into consideration when planning my contents.
In addition, the style of writing was mentioned and the reoccurring theme was that it was relaxed
and quite informal. This means I will write the magazine (especially the DPS) with an informal tone
and possibly quite humorous because this makes it easier for my audience to relate.
