Pumice stones are traditionally used for stone washing denim garments to give them a vintage look. During the stone washing process, pumice stones of varying shapes and hardness abrade the denim fabric to scrape off dye and create fading effects. Larger, harder stones are used for heavyweight denim while smaller, softer stones work better for lightweight denim fabrics. Though effective, pumice stones can damage machines and garments over time. Synthetic stones have been developed as an alternative that allows for more consistent results while being more durable and less abrasive than natural pumice stones.
