When an initial military coup failed to win control of the entire country, a bloody civil war ensued, fought with great ferocity on both sides. The Nationalists, as the rebels were called, received aid from Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The Republicans received aid from the Soviet Union as well as from the International Brigades, composed of volunteers from Europe and the United States.

As a part of our Erasmus+ Project we prepared this slide to show the effects of the civil war on Spain.
The Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936 when the Republican government went against Nationalist forces led by General Francisco Franco, leading to a three-year conflict that became international in scope. Hitler supported and helped the Nationalists with German armed forces because he shared their fascist views, justifying his actions as helping Franco. While Britain and France did not directly intervene, the war demonstrated the rise of fascism and nationalism in Europe in the aftermath of World War I.
Lesson 2 Lorcas Life And Leanings
Lorca lived in Granada, Spain from age 9 and identified with persecuted groups like the Moors who were expelled in 1492. He was homosexual in a culture that valued masculinity. Born in 1898 during a traumatic time for Spain, Lorca associated with liberal and socialist ideals during the Second Spanish Republic but these were reversed by right-wing forces in 1933. Tensions and violence rose until the military rebellion in 1936 led by Franco, whose forces took control of Andalusia. As a liberal in opposition to Franco's authoritarian regime and the Catholic Church, Lorca was arrested and executed in Granada in August 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War.
The French Revolution
The French Revolution lasted from 1789 to 1799, during which France transitioned from a monarchy ruled by King Louis XVI to a republic. This period saw some of the bloodiest events in European history. The revolution went through several different periods including a constitutional monarchy, the rule of Robespierre, the Directory, and Napoleon's rise as emperor. Napoleon's rule was eventually defeated and he was forced to abdicate in 1814.

Russian civil war
The Russian Civil War began in 1917 following the October Revolution and lasted until 1922. It pitted the Bolshevik Red Army against various anti-Bolshevik White armies. While most fighting ended by 1920, it took the Bolsheviks until 1922 to fully defeat all opposition. The civil war was further complicated by foreign intervention from Allied powers in parts of Russia. By the end, around 15 million people had died and the Russian economy was devastated.
Warsaw uprising
The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944 when armed Polish resistance fighters revolted against German troops occupying Warsaw. The uprising had been called for by the Polish Underground State and Moscow radio. It was hoped that as the Soviet Red Army approached Warsaw, the uprising would last only a few days. However, it ended up lasting 63 days as the resistance fighters battled the German forces. In the end, Warsaw was left almost completely destroyed and its remaining residents were either killed or deported.
Six day war
Israel launched a preemptive attack against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan in June 1967, known as the Six Day War. The war began as Egypt expelled UN peacekeepers and blocked Israeli shipping in the Strait of Tiran, bringing Israel and its neighboring Arab states to the brink of conflict under the leadership of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and Jordanian King Hussein.
