The Spanish Civil War was a major conflict in Spain that occurred after an attempt to overthrow the government by parts of the army against the Second Republic. The Spanish Civil War lasted from July 17, 1936 to April 1, 1939. (Thomas)
The Republicans or Republicanos, and they were supported by the Soviet Union and Mexico. The Nationalists or Nacionales, and they had the support of Italy and Germany. The Republicans were made up of people who wanted a capitalist Liberal government, anarchists, and communists. The nationalists were mostly anti-communists.  Their leaders were wealthy land owners who were generally conservative and favored the centralization of state power. (Nelson) Who was Fighting?
Casualties There were almost 500,000 deaths total during the Civil War. 110,000 Republican soldiers died in battle. 90,000 Nationalist soldiers died in battle. 10% of all soldiers who fought in the war were killed.
