The Spanish Civil War lasted from 1936 to 1939 and was a conflict between the Republicans and Nationalists over control of Spain. The Republicans were supported by the Soviet Union and Mexico and included those who wanted a capitalist liberal government, anarchists, and communists. The Nationalists were backed by Italy and Germany and were mostly anti-communists led by wealthy landowners. There were around 500,000 total deaths during the war, with 110,000 Republican and 90,000 Nationalist soldiers killed.
