CIVIL WAR
The Spanish Civil War was
fought from 17 July 1936 to 1
April 1939 between the
Republicans, who were loyal
to the democratically elected
Spanish Republic, and the
Nationalists, a rebel group led
by General Francisco Franco.
The Nationalists prevailed,
and Franco ruled Spain for
the next 36 years, from 1939
until his death in 1975.
THE TWO FACTIONS
This faction was constituted by the government of
Spain, elected democratically, formed by different
liberal parties.
THE REPUBLICANS
.
BOTH SIDES
The nationalist or rebel faction was the
conservative one. It was organized by the
military, and led by Francisco Franco
NATIONALISTS
THE INTERNATIONAL
BRIGADES
The International Brigades were military groups
composed of volunteers from 54 countries that
participated in the Spanish Civil War to support the
army of the Second Republic, facing the rebels
against the democratic government elected at the
polls in 1936.
THE INTERNATIONAL
BRIGADES
In total it is thought that as many as 35,000 volunteers
who came from countries like Britai, Spain, Portugal, Est
onia, and many other countries in Europe and all over
the world participated in thwe war, over 9,900 were killed
and over 7,500 wounded in action.
WHO WON
The nationalists won the
war and Francisco Franco
became the dictator of
Spain for 39 years, until he
died.
The dictatorship was
characterized by
absolutism, close relation
with the church and control
of the media.
Francisco Franco, the dictator
