Smog is air pollution created by a combination of emissions from human activities like burning fuels and unfavorable weather like fog. It contains harmful substances that can negatively impact human health. There are two main types of smog: London smog, which contains sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides and forms in colder weather; and Los Angeles smog, which forms in subtropical summer heat from vehicle emissions and can include ozone. Breathing smog has been linked to reduced life expectancy and increased risk of respiratory diseases, heart disease, cancer and other illnesses. It is most severe in dense, industrial cities.
