3. Introduction
Def:
A shampoo is a preparation of a surfactant(surface active agent)
in suitable form, liquid, solid or powder which when used under the
condition specified by removing surface greases like dirt & skin debris.
From the hair shaft and scalf without effecting adversely the hair scalf
or the health of the user.
Ideal Properties:
1. It should effectively and completely remove dust or soil excessive sebum
(Or) other fatty substance & loose corneal cells from the hair.
2. It should be produce a good amount of foam to satisfy the psychological
requirement of user.
3. It should be easily removed on rinsing with water.
4. It should leave the hair non-dry soft, lustrous with good manageability and
minimum fly away.
5. It should impart a pleasant fragrance to the hair.
6. It should not cause any side effects or irritation to skin (Or) eye.
7. It should not make the hand rough and chapped.

4. History
Shampoo originally meant as head massage in
several North Indian languages. Both the word & the
concept were introduced to Britain from colonial India.
The word shampoo in English is derived from Hindi
CHÃMPOO.
Its English uses in Anglo Indians to date in 1762 in
India.
In India champoo was used for head massage usually
with the some form of oils.
Its was started in 1814 in Britain by Bengali
Entrepreneur by Sake Dean Mohamad.

5. Advantages
It keeps hair silky and smooth.
shampoo foam is pleasing.
It is less toxic.
Keeps dirt, pollutant, dust and oil away.
Shampoo is easy to rinse.
There is minimum skin & eye irritation.
It gives thick & creamy feeling.
Pleasant fragrance is imparted.
It is slightly acidic.

6. Disadvantages
Sodium laureth sulfate is commonly used in
shampoo which may harm skin, eyes and may
even be carcinogenic.
Ease of ethylene oxide with sodium laureth
sulfate may result in 1,4 dioxane is said to be
carcinogenic.
Continuous expose to this can cause headache
& vertigo.
May also cause sourness in eyes, nose &
throat and lungs

16. Conclusion
Hair chemistry structure is the foundation
shampoo design.
Shampoo generally is composed by cleaning
agents, modifying agents, pH adjuster &
fragrance oil etc.
The major types of surfactants are anionic,
cationic, non ionic and amphoteric.
Surfactant will influence six essential attributes
of shampoo like cleaning, condition, viscosity &
aesthetic appeal combined with safety and
mildness in use
