Quantities Many construction workers shy away from carrying out calculations of quantities, perhaps thinking that it’s too complex for them to deal with. If we can’t calculate the correct amount of materials for a task, we might run out of materials before we finish it. If we can’t calculate the quantity of work completed, we won’t know how much we should be paid.

When we are calculating quantities, ie the number of bricks needed, we can say that the area of a wall is the size of its surface. So when we look at the face of a brick wall we are looking at the area we need to calculate. face of wall

(We can leave out the zero) If we do the same with the HEIGHT measurement we end up with: We can round the result up to 1.21 giving us an area of 1.21m² (or 1.21 square metres)

Now we know the area of our wall in square metres (m²), we need to work out how many bricks we need. There are 60 bricks to a square metre. We simply multiply 1.21 x 60 to give us the number of bricks required.
