Primary role is concerned with direct training
In this role, on the basis of the training objectives-
Decides the inputs required and designs the course
contents to achieve the objectives,
Helps the trainees to learn, provides feedback about their
learning
This role involves –
Class room teaching and other methods imparting KSA,
Evaluation off trainees and feedback
Actually he is a teaching specialist

The Provider
• Provides training – imparts training (KSA)
• For providing he has to
Plan and design the programme
Maintain and deliver the programme
For this purpose, he has to
Conduct training need analysis
Set objectives
Design the course
Choose appropriate methods
Test out and evaluate the training course and activities
Deliver the training content in the most efficient and effective
way so that the learner is benefited

The Consultant
• Acts as a consultant for HRD in the organization
• Analyzes the business problems, and recommends possible
solutions
• Works with the line managers, identifies the performance
problems of employees, advices possible training solutions (if
necessary)
• Works along with the providers / trainers in designing and
providing training programme
• Advices training manager (if there is one) on training goals
and policies, evaluation of training programme and effective
implementation of the training programmes

The Innovator
He has to help the organization to manage change effectively
and to solve performance problems
In this role
o He works with the manager at senior/middle level
o Provide support and help to them in coping with the changes
o Identify the training methods to make changes among the
managers
o Facilitate for changes
o Advice on training programme to make changes effective and
enduring one
o In Organizational Development terms such a role is called as
“the change agent”, “the catalyst”, or “interventionalist”

The Manager
In manager’s role he has to perform managerial functions – planning,
organizing, coordinating and controlling of training and
development activity
This role involves-
• Setting training goals and policies
• Liaising with other departments and mangers at different levels
about the contributions of training and improving training
effectiveness
• Ensuring appropriate training activities are designed, developed,
delivered and evaluated
• Acquiring and developing training staff, establish proper
organizational structure, ensure proper co-ordination and
communication at different levels
• Acquire other facilities for training and development programme
• Monitoring quality standards and controlling activities

Out of the five roles
• The first two (trainer and provider) are concerned with
maintaining performance levels
• The next two (consultant and innovator) are concerned
with training for change
• The last one (the manager) is concerned with integrating
the activities and behaviors of other roles
• Thus, these roles and not distinct set of activities, behaviors
and responsibilities
• Each one has a clear focus and relate to each other
10. Essentials of a Good Training Programme
1. Training programme should be chalked out after identifying
the training needs or goals. It should have relevance to the
job requirements
2. Must be flexible and should make due allowances for
individual difference with respect to their ability, aptitude,
attitude, learning capacity, emotional make up etc.
3. Should prepare the trainees mentally before they are
imparted any training or skills
4. must be conducted by well qualified trainers
5. Should emphasize both on theory and practice and should
help in acquiring practical experience
6. Should have the support of top management.
7. Should be subject to critical evaluation, feedback and follow
up
