Rickets is a disorder caused by a lack of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate that leads to softening and weakening of bones. There are three main types: nutritional rickets caused by vitamin D deficiency; hypophosphatemic rickets caused by low phosphate levels; and renal rickets caused by kidney disorders. Rickets can be prevented by consuming enough calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D in the diet, though some may need supplements. Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause of the vitamin or mineral deficiency.
