Vitamin D is important for good health, growth and strong bones. A 
lack of vitamin D is very common. Vitamin D is mostly made in the 
skin by exposure to sunlight. Most foods contain very little vitamin D 
naturally, though some are fortified (enriched)
A main action of vitamin D is to help calcium and phosphorus in our 
diet to be absorbed from the gut. Calcium and phosphorus are needed 
to keep bones healthy and strong. So, vitamin D is really important for 
strong and healthy bones. In addition, vitamin D seems to be important 
for muscles and general health. There is also some evidence that 
vitamin D may also help to prevent other diseases such as cancer, 
diabetes and heart disease.
People can become deficient in vitamin D because they don't 
consume enough or absorb enough from food, their exposure to 
sunlight is limited, or their kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its 
active form in the body. In children vitamin D deficiency causes 
rickets, where the bones become soft and bend. It's a rare disease but 
still occurs, In adults, vitamin D deficiency leads to osteomalacia, 
causing bone pain and muscle weakness
Vitamin D is being studied for its possible connections to several 
diseases and medical problems. 
Vitamin D Deficiency leads to: 
Rickets in small children. 
Osteomalacia
Fatigue 
Muscle pain and weakness 
Joint pain 
Chronic pain 
Weight gain 
Restless sleep 
Headaches 
Bladder problems
Rickets is a condition that affects bone development in children. It causes the bones to 
become soft and weak, which can lead to bone deformities. 
In rare cases, children can be born with a genetic form of rickets. It can also develop if 
another condition affects how vitamins and minerals are absorbed by the body. 
Signs and symptoms of rickets 
Rickets can lead to bone pain, poor growth and deformities of the skeleton, such as bowed 
legs, curvature of the spine and thickening of the ankles, wrists and knees. 
Children with rickets are also more likely to fracture their bones 
How to prevent rickets 
Rickets can easily be prevented by eating a diet that includes vitamin D and calcium, as well 
as spending some time in sunlight.
Osteomalacia is softening of the bones due to a lack of vitamin D or a problem with the body's ability to break 
down and use this vitamin 
There are many causes of osteomalacia. 
Other conditions that may lead to osteomalacia include: 
Not enough vitamin D in the diet 
Not enough exposure to sunlight, which produces vitamin D in the body 
Malabsorption of vitamin D by the intestines 
Symptoms: 
. Bone fractures that happen without a real injury 
Muscle weakness 
Widespread bone pain, especially in the hips
Yes, when amounts in the blood become too high. Signs of toxicity 
include nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, and 
weight loss. And by raising blood levels of calcium, too much vitamin 
D can cause confusion, disorientation, and problems with heart. 
Excess vitamin D can also damage the kidneys.
