The Competitive Advantage Of Zara
Zara, one of the world s largest apparel retailers, was founded in 1975 in La Coruna, Spain. With its
successful rollout in the Spanish market, it began to expand its stores around the world, and became
one of the most profitable brands in the appalling market. Zara was famous for its ability to quickly
respond to the market demands, which provides a useful lesson in terms of competitive advantage
with its competitors. But confronting to the fast paced and constantly changing market, if a company
wants to consistently increase market share in order to survive in the competitive market, it is
irrefutable that it needs to achieve sustainable competitive advantage, since the achievement of
sustainable competitive advantage can be expected to lead to higher performance. The resource based
view (RBV), which emphasizes the internal capabilities of a firm to attain sustainable competitive
advantage in its market and industry, could be an excellent tool to explain why a company can be
superior to others (Sheehan and Foss, 2007). Hence, the main purpose of this essay is to evaluate
whether and how Zara generates its sustainable competitive advantage, drawing on the resource based
view literature. Resource based view of Zara The resource based view emphasizes the internal
accumulation of firms resources and capabilities that contribute to firms development (Peteraf, 1993).
Resources include all assets, attributes, knowledge, etc. (Barney, 1991), which enables the firm to

The Way Wit By Vivian Bearing
The way Wit approaches death
Human kind has a complicated relationship with death. We intellectually regard it as something
inevitable, but that doesn t stop us from feeling baffled or victimized by it. Wit by Margaret Edson
portrays an attempt at understanding this relationship. Its main character, Vivian Bearing, is an
accomplished literature professor who is facing the last stage of ovarian cancer. Following Vivian s
last days of life, the work explores mortality by examining one s personal relationship with death
through literature and society s responsibility toward the dying through characterization. To one, is
Death an end or a beginning? Is it a friend or foe? Vivian Bearing knows her death is inevitable, but
that doesn t keep her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being a lonely patient, her only friend was the constant flashbacks from her tenure as a professor. First
came the memories of her success as she published volumes after volumes of literary analysis of Jon
Donne and her praisal of the way his poetry reveals how good you really are (Norton 1507). At this
stage, she relied on her interpretation of Donne s sonnet and combats death coldly and rationally. In
discussion with Dr Kelekian, she doesn t hesitate to embrace a strong and dangerous experimental
chemotherapy method. Within her mind were the constant urge to know more facts and an one step
removed void of feelings, unlike that of someone who is facing a terminal disease. Then, things take a
turn when Vivian ceased to see the world through Jon Donne and looked at those who surrounded her
instead. Stunned by the cold treatment from Jason Posner, her former student turned doctor, she began
to question the way that she perceives life. In a flashback to her teaching tenure, she regrets an instant
when she refused to grant a student an extension on an assignment as his grandmother had recently

The Impact Of Macro Forces On The Sportswear Industry
The sportswear industry provides clothing, including footwear, worn for sport or physical exercise and
has now evolved as casual fashion clothing more than athletic wear. In this report I will be talking
about Kotler s macro forces and their effect on the sportswear industry. I will also be comparing two
organizations from the industry and evaluating the similarities and differences between them.
Macro environment or macro forces consists of the larger societal factors that have the potential to
affect an organization s strategies. According to Phillip Kotler, these variables include demographic,
economic, natural, technological, political, and cultural outside forces. ( Josbd , n.d, para. 7)
The demographic environment is a major part of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Technological environment is the combination some factors which develop new products and also
create opportunities and threats for the company. Not only does it benefit marketers greatly creating
new product and market opportunities, it also creates opportunity for customers to consume new
products. The evolution of technology has provided many platforms for marketers. New and improved
technology can either profit the organization, or create threats of more competitors in the market. In
the sportswear industry, technological factors could cause unemployment as machines replace
workers. It could, however, reduce cost as more products can be made at a lower cost and lesser
amount of time compared to labor made garments. Moreover, technology can benefit the sportswear
marketers as a form of market research as social media and internet has outrageously developed over
the past decade. Social media famous people can promote the sportswear by just wearing the items
and posting a picture on the internet or simply advertising it at a really low price, almost immediately
increasing sales. Political factors are those that affect the

Racial Politics And The Race Cycle Model Essay
It has been centuries since slavery ended across Latin America and the United States, yet racial issues
continue to plague these countries. Since manumission, the concept of race has evolved through the
meaning societies have given it. While the idea of race is merely conceptual it has significant social
and political effects. More specifically, through racial politics, these countries have been able to
incorporate race in their agendas and implement racial politics in their laws and policies in such a way
that perpetuates racial ideologies. One of the methods used to understand the role of racial politics and
its effect on racial ideologies and vice versa is the race cycle model. The purpose of the race cycle
model is to demonstrate how racial ideologies are improved, worsened, or maintained, but fails to
explain how the cycle can lead to multiple, asymmetrical outcomes as depicted by the racial politics of
Haiti and the responses of other Latin American and the United States following the Haitian
Revolution.
The race cycle model begins with what Sawyer (2006) calls the old equilibrium. This old equilibrium
represents the status quo surrounding the racial politics and ideologies in a state. In the old
equilibrium, Haiti was formerly a French colony known as Saint Domingue on the island of
Hispaniola. Throughout this period, Saint Domingue was a major plantation zone and France s
wealthiest overseas colony, exporting, Over 80,000 tons of sugar , among other cash crops

American Legion Experience Essay
I have learned many lessons in my time that will help guide me through my life. However, I think one
experience that will definitely stick with me forever is attending Missouri Boys State. At Boys State,
our motto was, A Week To Change A Lifetime, and it truly was. We learned about integrity, honesty,
pride, and what it means to be in the American Legion. We also learned about the political system and
how our government works by making our own government. Boys State is a program run by the
American Legion. The American Legion is a group of veterans that still believe in the values of the
military. Boys State is a week where high school juniors from Missouri go to learn good values and
run their own mock government. During my week in Warrensburg, MO, I learned ... Show more

We had a different speaker every night, each talking about different values and how they expect to see
us in leadership positions in about 20 years. Jay Nixon is probably my most memorable speaker
because he had a lot of stories that talked about the lessons he learned in his life and his political
career.
Lastly, the best learning experience was the Law School where we learned the basics of law. During
this week, I learned all about the law and how it applies to each individual citizen. I learned all of the
basic vernacular and proceedings in a courtroom, along with an actual court case that we watched live.
During this time, I learned a lot that will always be of use to me whenever I need it to be.
Missouri Boys State was a great learning period for me. I learned a lot about myself and government.
The lessons I learned will stick with me forever and the friends I made will be there for the rest of my
life. I think that anyone that wants to learn and be a better person should go to Boys

Raisin In The Sun Critical Analysis
Imagine, for a moment, that someone has just received an enormous check. However, this positive and
seemingly heaven sent bestowal is laced with dismay and mayhem, for there are numerous outcomes
this check could produce not all of which are accomplishable. Meanwhile, said person s family is
being torn asunder by all of these possible outcomes since each is persistently continuing to pester and
demand the person who received the check to use it in the way that each of the family members
personally believe. It is always a burdensome choice, whether to consider an individual, the majority,
or the minorities, yet this is the dilemma thrust upon one woman in Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine
Hansberry. In writing this impossible circumstance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Accentuating the lack of passion and common courtesy Walter has for his wife, Ruth, in this particular
scene, Hansberry is, in the beginning, ingraining in her readers minds how detestably this man treats
his wife.
However, this absolute disregard for his wife is completely transformed after Mama, the woman who
is burdened with the dilemma, decides to satisfy the needs of the majority and purchases a house
which will be advantageous for everyone, whether they were pleased with the decision or not. His
whole being appears to convert into its polar opposite, as shown through the stage direction, He
dances over to Ruth and tries to get her to dance with him. She gives in at last to his raunchiness and
in a fit of giggles allows herself to be drawn into his mood (112). The author illustrates how his
actions and mentality, thus their relationship, evolved over a short period resulting from the purchase
of the house, which was originally intended to appease the majority, since not everyone initially
approved of this use of the money. Therefore, this altering of mindset and relationship conveys that,
by selecting the choice best suited for the majority, one may unknowingly be selecting an option that
becomes best suited for everyone and that is eventually unanimously agreed upon.
In addition to this, it it always best to comply with the needs of the majority since the majority may

The Logical Fallacies
What are logical fallacies, evidence, and error in misconceptions? The report will identify nine logical
fallacies. If all evidence in an argument appears to be true, still the disputation may be invalid if the
logic utilized is not sanctioned ( Logical Fallacies, 2014). Another name for it is called logical error, in
philosophy. There are many fallacies to be aware of when making a sound argument. The nine logical
fallacies are Mere assertion/Circular reasoning/Ad hominem, Red herring/Pseudo questions/False
cause, and Sweeping generalizations/Slippery slope/Equivocation or changing means. `
Mere assertion/Circular reasoning/Ad hominem
1. Mere assertion is when one says a statement is true, because he or she straightforwardly believe ...

One may use it to defend him or herself against a skeptic, claiming that the skeptic is closed minded.
By way of example, Karina s presentation should not be shown, because her religion is Christian.
Cristian should not be allowed to speak, because he cannot drive. On the whole, Kevin should not be
able to play soccer, because his mother is sick.
Red herring/Pseudo questions/False cause
4. Red herring is when one distracts someone or the audience to confuse them, with something
irrelevant in a discussion. It leads the viewer to a false end. Also, can be used intentionally. As an
illustration, Rudy s mom asked him to clean the basement because he has not done anything this week,
but he pointed out that he cut the grass two weeks ago. Hector and Jessica were fighting because no
one has said I love you recently, so Hector pointed out that he was the first one to say it. Briefly,
mother and father were arguing about who took the kids to school last, which mother pointed out that
she took them to Chucky Cheese three times this month.
5. Pseudo questions are when one s answer to a question appears to makes sense, but the question
cannot be answered. Questions that people generally fell into. Typically are open ended. To illustrate,
if Albert Einstein was so smart, could he explained God? If Abraham Lincoln was honest, could he be
honest throughout his whole life? Overall, if Michael Jackson was the best dancer of all times, could
he do all the dance moves in the

Military Family Psychoeducation Plan
The scenario my psychoeducation plan will be based off of is the couple, who are parents of 4 children
and have just been informed that they will be experiencing their first deployment. The first
deployment milestone for military families is an extremely stressful and scary time, however with
resources and support stress can be minimized. When working with a service member and their family
before their deployment it is important provide psycho education on the impact the deployment will
have on the service member, their spouse/partner, and on their children.

When working with a family who has their first deployment, it is important to help reinforce their
ability to respond to the challenges they may encounter throughout the deployment cycle. Deployment
has been may have an impact on parent child interactions for those who are deployed, as well as for
caregivers remaining at home. It is important to provide psychoeducation on the impact the
deployment may have on the family, such as separation and transitions, relationship challenges,
mental health difficulties and substance abuse. It is important to educate and provide resources
regarding this because research indicated that the role of parenting practices in the relationship
between family stressors can have a direct impact on the child behavioral/emotional problems
(Palmer, 2008). I would also provide resources on Family Service Centers, such as the Navy Fleet and
Family Support Center. These centers can provide support and education about resiliency and military
life. Child Serv, which is an organization piloting the Military Family Initiative, is another resource
that would be helpful as it offers services for early childhood education and family counseling to

Two Theories Of Utilitarian And Retributive Punishment
The concept of punishment exists in many different forms, each with conflicting views on how to best
approach an offence committed by individuals. Two theories stand at the forefront of punishment
being that of the Utilitarian, and Retributive theories. Each theory presents its own idea on how
punishment ought to be carried out and the core reasoning behind it. The two theories are also debated
within our own Canadian legal system which is referred to as: The Criminal Code of Canada, where it
details the different principles and procedures when sentencing an individual who has committed a
specific offence with guidelines for what sanction should be given. Such principles/procedures reflect
various factors within the two theories, and have undergone different fluctuations for which theory has
dominated throughout history, but have been influenced more by one theory than from the other.
Generally speaking, punishment is invoked upon offenders for the pursuit of the common good of
mankind for a society that prospers, and not one that is hindered. Two primary theorists each lead one
of the theories of punishment and what its purpose is; one who stands from a Utilitarian view is
Jeremy Bentham, and the other being Immanuel Kant who focuses on a more Retributive theory of
punishment.
The two theories of Utilitarian and Retributive Punishment each have their own views on what the
purpose of punishment is, and of how it is to be invoked in the case of a breach of rules by an
offender. Jeremy Bentham makes his debut by focusing on the theory of Utilitarianism which is
subdivided into two other theories; the Theory of the Good (also referred to as: Hedonism), where
good is pleasure and evil is pain; and the Theory of the Right (also known as: Consequentialism),
which outlines that the right action is that which produces the maximum good of all available actions.
Bentham as a theorist, believes that the primary goal of laws is to prevent wrongful actions where he
summarizes in his opening to Chapter XIII of An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and
Legislation: The general object which all laws have, or ought to have, in common, is to augment the
total happiness of the community; and therefore, in the first

Eukaryotic Cells Relationship
Cells reproduce genetically identical copies of themselves by cycles of cell growth and division. The
cell cycle separates it into four stages. G1 is the period after cell division, and before the start of DNA
replication. Cells grow and monitor their environment to determine whether they should initiate
another round of cell division. S is the period of DNA synthesis, where cells replicate their
chromosomes. G2 is the period between the end of DNA replication and the start of cell division. Cells
check to make sure DNA replication has successfully completed, and make any necessary repairs. M
is the actual period of cell division, consisting of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and
cytokinesis.
A chromosome is a DNA molecule that carries all or part of the hereditary information of an organism.

increases with more protein synthesis. If the cell is not to divide again, it will enter G0. In synthesis

chromatids, where each chromatid contains a linear DNA molecule that is identical to the joined sister.

Time available to finish planks for Norm Sullivan: 4.5 hours per week x 52 weeks = 234 hours (14040
minutes)
In that time he can create (with the table saw): 14040 minutes available /15 minutes required per board
= 936 planks
In that time he can create (with the router): 14040 minutes available / 14 minutes required per board =
1002 planks.
Neither of these options is going to be sufficient to meet his production need of 1200 planks for the
upcoming year.
What if he were to hire more workers? This would reduce the production time per plank and make it
likely that he would be able to reduce the production time per board. For each worker he would be
looking at $5200 per year.
His projected sales for the year:
1200 planks
10 feet each @ $6.00 per foot = $60 per plank Therefore, 1200 x 60 = $72000 His projected profit

$36000 in profit for the year.

Differences Between The Book And In The Bedroom
The movie, In the Bedroom, and in the story, Killings, both type of media have very different tones.
The differences between the two tones initiates from the beginning of the movie and the story. The
movie, begins with a happier tone than the original story, where the tone originates from the funeral
scene. Within the book, Dubus uses foreshadowing that helps create the tone that suggests to the
reader something is coming. However, in contrast, the director of In the Bedroom, Todd Field, Field
started the movie with a happy and calm scene which usually implies a happy story, but later
devastates the audience with a series of killings. In the Killings, Dubus used foreshadowing
throughout the story to show the anger and the grief the family endured after Frank s murder. Dubus
decided to begin the story with Frank s funeral and the family s emotions and thoughts about Frank s
murderer, Richard Stout. Dubus showed the intensity of the family s hatred by adding quotes from the
family, such as; I should kill him. (1175). The author added several quotes like this, that described and
demonstrated the family s grief. Knowing how the characters felt gave the reader the ability to feel the

Another factor that influence micelle formation is , the salt concentration and pH. The membrane
phospholipids are disrupted by mild nonionic detergents to isolate them but the isolated lipids should
be functional to react with the enzyme phospholipases. If pH and salt concentration is not maintained
at biological range, the micelles formed could be nonfunctional or denatured. This will make the
phospholipases reactivity with lipids impossible.

Cause And Effect Of Tsunami
How is a tsunami caused?
There are different ways of how a tsunami is caused. A tsunami is a series of waves created by an
abrupt movement on the ocean floor that can result from an earthquake, meteorite or a volcanic
eruption. However, powerful undersea earthquakes are responsible for most tsunamis. For example, on
the 11th of March 2011 a devastating tsunami occurred on the east coast of Japan, which was caused
by an earthquake at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The magnitude of the earthquake which caused
the Japanese tsunami was recorded as 9.1 on the richer scale. This was very similar to the tsunami that
occurred on the 26th of December in the Indian Ocean, which had a huge impact on many countries
such as India, Thailand and Indonesia. The magnitude of the earthquake that occurred in the Indian
Ocean was also 9.1 on the richer scale.
Where the disasters most commonly occur
Tsunamis can occur anywhere in the world where land meets the ocean. Two of the most recent large
scale tsunamis in modern history was in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean which mainly
effected India and Japan respectively. Tsunamis potentially threaten every coastal area and river
system in the world. However, they are most likely to occur on shores directly facing a large body of
water where an undersea earthquake may occur. Scientists estimate that almost three quarters of the
worlds tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean as this is the largest ocean in the entire world.

The Paris Eiffel Tower
1.0 Introduction.
The topic I am going to write about is The Eiffel Tower in France about its structure, history etc.
Because Eiffel Tower is a very significant man made building at that time(1889) and still the most
famous and recognizable tower people could think of in the world nowadays.
1.1 History and background of The Eiffel Tower.
The Eiffel Tower is located in Paris, France, buildt in 1889 and it is 1063 feet tall. The reason of the
name of the Eiffel Tower is because it was named after Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who was a famous
civil engineer and architect. The tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris in memory of
the centenary of the French Revolution. It means too much for the french people, it is a sign of ...

the French people and for the attraction of tourists.
*The Eiffel Tower is an excellent viewpoint, to get the whole city of Paris under your eyes, and it is a
great spot for observation.
*The tower saves a lot of land space.
Disadvantage
*Because the tower is very high and famous, it became a very popular place for people to commit
suicide, approximately more than 350 people jumped off from Eiffel Tower and died. So safety is one
of the major disadvantages of The Eiffel Tower.
*The cost is often much higher to build a tower rather than a lower structure, and requires more people
and money to clean or repair from high.
2.5 Interesting facts about the Eiffle Tower
Thomas Edison visited the tower in September 1889 and left a message of congratulations for M
Eiffel .
In February 1912 Austrian Franz Reichelt attempted to jump off the first floor of the tower using his
home made parachute to glide to the ground. Unfortunately during the 60 m drop his parachute failed
to open and he died on impact.
Between 1925 and 1934, three sides of the Tower accommodated advertising space for Citroen which
made it the world s tallest advertising structure at the time.
The Eiffel Tower has featured heavily in at least two James Bond movies, although there have been
many more cameo appearances in a

Jfk Campaign Essay
During the 1960 election between John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon, the Kennedy campaign
created a jingle, and then adapted it into a political campaign ad, unique from any other at its time.
This ad as well as the context of the times is ultimately helped JFK get elected as president in the 1960
election. First I will briefly explain the context of the 1960 election and the issues surrounding the
time. Next I will introduce the Kennedy Jingle political ad, and finally I will analyze the persuasive
powers of the jingle, and the effect it had on the election of JFK. The presidential election of 1960 fell
right in the time of a heated Cold War with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union also had just taken a
lead in the space race by launching the Sputnik satellite ( Kennedy Nixon Debates U.S. Presidents ).
The stress of the spread of communism and the issues with civil rights and desegregation had divided
the nation. This raised a lot of questions about democracy in the United States. At this time in history
there was a deep need for strong leadership, and ultimately this leadership would come from John F.

Independent voters are actively pursued by candidates during elections, because their voting

As the quote says, undecided voters opinions can easily be changed, and I feel as if when an
undecided voter would have went to vote, if they had seen the Kennedy ad, the would likely remember
the tune and the name Kennedy. This idea that when a voter went to vote, they would remember the

The union of man and woman is universally and socially acknowledged by the institution of marriage.
It is one of the oldest rituals to be practiced even today in every parts of the world. Marriage is an
important part of the traditional African society and is one of the largely reflected issues in African
literature. According to Lauretta Ngcobo, in her essay entitled African Motherhood Myth and Reality

But what makes Emecheta a balanced writer is that she maintains a perfect equilibrium between her
emotions and intellectualism, never idealizes her African traditional customs and beliefs which put
enormous pressure upon the woman relegating her to the margin. Chikwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi, in
this regard, states that Emecheta deals mainly with the black woman as the victim of black patriarchy
(1985: 67). She captures every detail of the traditional customs that makes womankind a victim. As
for instance, the practice of polygamy in which African man like Okonkwo appear as symbolic
representation of male hegemony which leaves the African women like Ma Blackie and Aku nna with
no voice of their own as well as the malpractices of cutting of lock of hair of the women and declaring
them as wives by the traditional African men. Women have been represented as the weaker sex or the
second sex and stereotyped with negative qualities such as sensitive, emotional, fragile, indecisive,
submissive etc. To quote Simone de Beauvoir in this context: To be feminine is to appear weak, futile,

Examples Of Satire In The Pardoners Tale
Following the Pardoner s short story about the rioters, he divulged into a peroration of his medieval
sermon. The Pardoner s eloquent haranguing appears as he exclaims, My holy pardon frees you all of
this, provided that you make the right approaches, that is with sterling rings, or silver brooches
(Chaucer 301 303). Even though the statement appears to free of irony, the Pardoner s opening story
brings a sense of satire to his closing remarks. Throughout the tale of the rioters, the Pardoner hoped
to exhibit how greed is a negative characteristic, yet he is exceptionally money hungry himself. The
utilization of irony thus showcases the Pardoner s characteristics of being self seeking and egotistic.

obvious from the global automotive sales data that South Korea s Hyundai KIAAutomotive Group

It may be cheaper to purchase an older truck than a newer car, but in fuel and maintenance, the older
truck will cost more. The pros and cons of this decision are all personal. The lower upfront costs may
be more beneficial to one person than to another. A personal decision that I am struggling with right
now is with my credit rating. I have two credit cards that have a high balance. These are both in my ex
wife s possession. They are both delinquent on payments. I have to decide whether to just take out a
high interest loan to pay these off and renew my credit rating, or to let her financial decisions affect
my credit rating. The third principle of individual decision making is rational people think at the
margin (Mankiw, 2007). This states that the benefit must exceed the cost. A personal experience with
this would be that I have a truck that gets very low fuel mileage. I needed a car with better fuel
economy, but have bad credit. I weighed the pros and cons of buying a car with a high interest loan,
and felt that the benefit was worth the cost. While some would say there is nothing good to come from
this, those who make these choices must feel there is. Mankiw (2007) points to the difference in value
between water and diamonds. A marginal increase in a person s water supply will rarely come at a
significant cost to the person. However, a marginal increase in diamonds is extremely valuable. The
forth principle of individual decision making is

More specifically, we sought to use brain activity measurements of ERPs to reconstruct images. A
recent study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure brain activity in visual
cortex as a person looked at several hours of movies. We then used these data to develop
computational models that could predict the pattern of brain activity that would be elicited by any
arbitrary movies (i.e., movies that were not in the initial set used to build the model). We used EEG
data to measure brain activity during stimulus. Then created a system for preprocessing the data to
fine tune the data to recognise image stimulus ERPs.
In the future of this study we will be able to create an intuitive way of image reconstruction. As you
move through the world or you look at pictures, a dynamic, ever changing pattern of activity is evoked
in the brain. The goal of the mind image identification system was to create a more fine tuned way to
read and related image evoked data. To do this, we create encoding models that describe how images
are transformed into brain activity, and then we use those models to decode brain activity and

Effects Of Deforestation On Amazon Forest Resilience Research
There is a chain reaction due to deforestation. Deforestation leads to decrease in biotic pump
disrupting the water cycle leading to a decrease in transpiration and increase in temperature. Such rise
in temperature leads to lack of rainfall, increase droughts and forest fires to which the fires will disrupt
the water cycle even more. The effects of deforestation on Amazon forest resilience research by Zemp
et al. (2017), build upon previous research done in the field of forestry studies and used similar
methods to collect data. Although they have come to some shortcomings such as the risk of
underestimating the differences which are introduced in evapotranspiration following deforestation,
compared to study using fine scale observations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zemp et al. (2017) s result on forest resilience in their simulation supports that the Amazon s forest
survival also decrease as there is an overlap between reductions of forest resilience with deforested
areas. Despite the evidence showing the detrimental effects of deforestation, Zemp et al. (2017) s
research focuses primarily on the quantity of the forest and deforestation, as such, the research has a
gap such that other geographical influences like fertilization, greenhouse gases, and water use, are not
accounted for. However, Zemp et al. (2017) had gained more understanding as they had used other
research papers, like [Spracklen and Garcia Carreras, 2015; Lejeune et al., 2015], to close the
unanswered gaps in the deforestation issue. Although the paper has explained the effect of
deforestation on water fluxes, the problem remains that in the short and long term, regardless of any
deforestation, many of the Amazon rainforest regions will continue to lose precipitation and become
more vulnerable to disturbances from fire and droughts, even more so in the dry season (Zemp et al.
2017).
The Drought and Deforestation: Has Land Cover Change Influenced Recent Precipitation Extremes in
the Amazon? By Bagley et al. (2014), argue that current level of deforestation influences recent
drought severity and magnitude of impacts from the land cover change which are altered in drought

A Monologue Of Alice
I had the same line of field for 25 years, and i have never had a case as odd as Alice s. She was my

Howard Nemerov s The Vacuum
The Vacuum Analysis
Grief is the price we pay for love. Queen Elizabeth II. As the quote above explains to love something
that can die is to welcome pain. The poem, The Vacuum focuses on the private aspect of life where
one spouse dies leaving the other alone after many years. The speaker in the poem is battling grief and
cannot bring himself to use the vacuum cleaner because his late wife used to take pride in a clean
house. The composition implies that the speaker no longer cares about life now that his wife has died.
The first few lines of the poem heavily foreshadow death, but do not directly address the event that
has occurred. Howard Nemerov uses harsh, brutal diction such as stopped lung , dog dead , and old
woman to imply the pain and isolation the speaker feels the word choice also gives the poem a
depressing mood. Giving flashbacks to the past illuminates the theme of chaos and order in the poem.
When the speaker s wife was alive she used to crawl, in the corner and under the stair as to make sure
every nook and cranny was clean, but now old filth is everywhere. Creating the image in the reader s

metaphorically went into the vacuum cleaner. Later in the poem he says, I can t bear to see the bag

Media In Media
The effects of media consumption on behavioral tendencies have long been the subject of both popular
and academic scrutiny. Specifically, it is widely accepted that over exposure to depictions of violence
in media can lead to desensitization to violent content and even short term aggressive behavior. From
a psychological perspective (but not from a sociological one), this is hard to dispute as there are
numerous studies which confirm this phenomenon although these studies have also been the victim of
sensationalist interpretations and representations. Essentially what has been postulated is a simple
cause and effect relationship: media exposure leads to a behavioral change. And as of recently, video
games, in particular, have been the subject of increased scrutiny in the context of this relationship and
once again there is evidence to support such a relationship. However, a review of available data
published by the American Psychological Association (Granic, Lobels, Engels, 2014) has suggested
that another, more positive cause and effect relationship may be at work with this type of media as it
has grown in visibility and mainstream acceptance. One such trend that has emerged from a review of
multiple studies is that playing video games can result in an increase in problem solving skills. This
has largely gone overlooked by the popular press and the public at large who instead continue to focus
on the link to aggressive behavior. And it is also important to consider that the findings of the APA do
not disprove this link; this potential increase in problem solving ability and the separate increase of
aggressive tendencies are not necessarily mutually exclusive to one another. In fact, it is entirely likely
that there is one singular reason that both occur as a result of playing video games: interactivity.
Interactivity in the context of video games constitutes a deep immersion in an entertaining fiction at a
level that other visual media cannot match. James Paul Gee (2007) clarifies this point further nothing
happens until a player acts and makes decisions... words and deeds are all placed in the context of an
interactive relationship between the player and the world. And ultimately, an interactive

A network topology describes how a network is physically laid out and how signals travel from one
device to another. Since the physical layout of the devices and cables doesn t describe how signals
travel from one device to another, they are broken down into physical and logical topologies. Physical
topology is the arrangement of cabling and how cables connect one device to another in network
[1].Common example is LAN in which it uses as physical star topology(discuss later)and can

What Is The Connection Between The Irish Potato Famine And...
The Irish Potato Famine and The Holocaust in Literature
Writers often use literature as a means of communicating traumatic events that occur in history, and
such events are recorded by first hand accounts as well as remembered by people far removed from
the situation. Two traumatic events in history that are readily found in literature are The Irish Potato
Famine and The Holocaust. A literary medium that has been used quite poignantly to convey trauma is
poetry and the poetry from these two historical traumatic events is not difficult to find. Some wrote
poetry to maintain their sanity as they experienced the traumatic event while others wrote after the fact
as an outlet for emotional pain. Some wrote in remembrance of what they ... Show more content on

The author also benefits from writing about the trauma; a need to express what has happened, is
quenched. It is shown that the literature of trauma is written from the need to tell and retell the story of
the traumatic experience, to make it real both to the victim and to the community...[as well as] serving
both as a validation and cathartic vehicle for the traumatized author (Tal 21). The story is larger than
the words of the author. His or her life has been permanently altered by trauma, and by acknowledging
it in the realm of reality, readers can take part in the trauma.
In both of the historical events above, a great many people faced trauma, pain, starvation, disease, and
all for a reason that is difficult, if not impossible to pinpoint. There is no way to determine why either
situation occurred in history, but it is possible to examine the literature more specifically the poetry
written during, after, and about those surreal events. Kali Tal has researched the literature of trauma
extensively and states that the literature of trauma is defined by the identity of its author [and it] holds
at its center the reconstruction and recuperation of the traumatic experience (16). She believes that a

Cultural Issues In Health Care
As healthcare providers we know that all patients reserve the right to access healthcare services to
address healthcare needs with respect to culture, beliefs and personal values. It?s important in order to
facilitate a comfortable and healing experience for the patient and provide optimal care.
First, all language barriers need to be addressed. If the patient doesn?t speak English or speaks
minimal English this can cause major anxiety to the patient and can become a hindrance to providing
optimal care. Using a translator will help build rapport with the patient and it will also give the patient
the opportunity to discuss all their concerns with the practitioner. It?s also important to include the

Hindus may use a variety of what is called Ayurvedic medicines, home remedies and spiritual
remedies. Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that is practiced by many Indians around the
world. It is a highly revered and respected science in India. It seeks to maintain a balance between the
body?s three elemental energies. Good and bad health is related to the level of balance of these three
energies. With this in mind, it is vital that a comprehensive list of their home medications including
homeopathic medications is obtained. Furthermore, the patient must be educated on the potential
adverse reactions that can occur when taking the homeopathic medications in conjunction with
prescribed medications. In order to provide optimal and cultural sensitive care it would also be helpful
to provide options for alternative medications if that is what the patient prefers. This will help avoid

Piracy Of Copyright
Introduction: The world today has entered into an era of instant communication. A person sitting in the
remotest corner of India can enjoy live performance taking place in the far away places like America
or Africa, thanks to electronic (parallel) media. Telephone and fax have made it possible to
communicate oral or written messages across the globe within seconds. The computer aided
communication technologies such as E Mail and Internet have added altogether a new dimension to
today s communication process by making it more speedy, informative and economical. The ways
through which different types of information can be communicated have also undergone a sea change.

Copyright and International Relations: The scope of copyright is not confined merely to the arena of
creativity and its economic exploitation in the country of its origin. It has emerged as a major factor in
international relations. In the recent past, the trade relations between the US and China deteriorated
considerably over the issue of protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). The US maintained that
China is the worst violator of IPRs and the loss to the US economy is more than 2 billion dollars
annually because of violation of its IPRs in China s territory. The dispute took a serious turn when US
trade groups wanted trade relations with China to be stopped completely. It was only after the
intervention of the heads of both the countries any further deterioration was averted.
Copyright in India: The copyright in India has travelled a long way since it was introduced during the
British rule. The first law on copyright was enacted in the year 1847 by the then Governor General of
India. When Copyright Act 1911 came into existence in England, it became automatically applicable
to India, being India an integral part of British Raj. This act was in force in the country until after
independence when a new copyright act (the Act of

Aerosmith s Impact On Rock And Roll
Aerosmith has impacted rock and roll in their music and it helped them a lot in life being a band
member and a citizen. Aerosmith started off as a rock and roll garage band that became popular, but
disbanded because of drug problems that then regained their popularity and became successful in their
career. Aerosmith started as a garage band, but then made it big. Steven always wanted a career. His
dad had an orchestra Steven wanted to be like his dad having his own music. When Steven got older
he started a garage band in his hometown of Yonkers, New York (Schlesinger, 2008). Steven was a
drummer but wanted to be a singer so when they all met in Boston before he would join the band he
said I would have to be lead singer. So Joe and Tom agreed and they started the band. Joey gave up
college to go with them (Schlesinger, 2008). The five were good friends and worked ... Show more

They started playing everywhere around the world. They had a major accomplishment for making an
album that everybody liked (Schlesinger, 2008). Beginning of Steven career was not so good. Steven
did some bad things in his life but he has cleaned himself up and now is not known for that stuff
anymore (Anjou, 2002). So Steven Tyler would do lots of stuff like smoke joints and sell drugs but
sometimes get caught (Tyler Dalton, 2011). Joe Perry leaves and makes his own band. Joe Perry and
Steven Tyler had many differences. In 1979 Joe Perry left the group and the true reason is unknown.
There were different guesses of why he left such as jealousy or a fight between his and Steven Tyler s
girlfriend (Schlesinger, 2008). Joe Perry formed the band called the Joe Perry Project when he left
Aerosmith. The Joe Perry Project band broke up in 1984 and Joe s manager wanted him to go back
and be part of Aerosmith (Schlesinger, 2008). Brad Whitford leaves Aerosmith. Brad left Aerosmith

Hmax Model Paper
Final Project: Research about HMAX model
Seok Hee Lee
Abstract In this paper, I investigated some of the models of computational neuroscience used in the
face recognition field. The model to be discussed is HMAX model. The paper contains what HMAX
model is, how it is derived in terms of biological background, and how it is being used for facial
recognition. Also, I simulated the simplified version of the model in MATLAB. The simulation of the
simplified version verified one cell in the highest hierarchy covers the entire retinal space of the given
image. INTRODUCTION First of all, I looked into the paper written by Riesenhuber and how HMAX
model is derived from a biological concept of a visual cortex. It begins with the power of cells found
in macaque inferotemporal cortex (IT). The cells in IT are considered as essential cells for recognizing
an object and IT is the highest area in the ventral visual stream. They are tuned to views of
complicated objects, for instance a face of human. Their response remains almost the same when scale
or position of an object changes, and it is one of the characteristic of these cells. This raises a question:
how can these cells distinguish similar faces? In the other words, this paper talks what mechanism
these cells use to respond differently from the similar inputs. This question is related to the model
proposed by Hubel and Wiesel. In this model, simple cells with neighboring receptive fields feed into
higher hierarchy cell and this

  • 2. The Competitive Advantage Of Zara Zara, one of the world s largest apparel retailers, was founded in 1975 in La Coruna, Spain. With its successful rollout in the Spanish market, it began to expand its stores around the world, and became one of the most profitable brands in the appalling market. Zara was famous for its ability to quickly respond to the market demands, which provides a useful lesson in terms of competitive advantage with its competitors. But confronting to the fast paced and constantly changing market, if a company wants to consistently increase market share in order to survive in the competitive market, it is irrefutable that it needs to achieve sustainable competitive advantage, since the achievement of sustainable competitive advantage can be expected to lead to higher performance. The resource based view (RBV), which emphasizes the internal capabilities of a firm to attain sustainable competitive advantage in its market and industry, could be an excellent tool to explain why a company can be superior to others (Sheehan and Foss, 2007). Hence, the main purpose of this essay is to evaluate whether and how Zara generates its sustainable competitive advantage, drawing on the resource based view literature. Resource based view of Zara The resource based view emphasizes the internal accumulation of firms resources and capabilities that contribute to firms development (Peteraf, 1993). Resources include all assets, attributes, knowledge, etc. (Barney, 1991), which enables the firm to implement ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We intellectually regard it as something inevitable, but that doesn t stop us from feeling baffled or victimized by it. Wit by Margaret Edson portrays an attempt at understanding this relationship. Its main character, Vivian Bearing, is an accomplished literature professor who is facing the last stage of ovarian cancer. Following Vivian s last days of life, the work explores mortality by examining one s personal relationship with death through literature and society s responsibility toward the dying through characterization. At this stage, she relied on her interpretation of Donne s sonnet and combats death coldly and rationally. In discussion with Dr Kelekian, she doesn t hesitate to embrace a strong and dangerous experimental chemotherapy method. Within her mind were the constant urge to know more facts and an one step removed void of feelings, unlike that of someone who is facing a terminal disease. Then, things take a turn when Vivian ceased to see the world through Jon Donne and looked at those who surrounded her instead. The Impact Of Macro Forces On The Sportswear Industry The sportswear industry provides clothing, including footwear, worn for sport or physical exercise and has now evolved as casual fashion clothing more than athletic wear. In this report I will be talking about Kotler s macro forces and their effect on the sportswear industry. I will also be comparing two organizations from the industry and evaluating the similarities and differences between them. Macro environment or macro forces consists of the larger societal factors that have the potential to affect an organization s strategies. According to Phillip Kotler, these variables include demographic, economic, natural, technological, political, and cultural outside forces. The evolution of technology has provided many platforms for marketers. New and improved technology can either profit the organization, or create threats of more competitors in the market. In the sportswear industry, technological factors could cause unemployment as machines replace workers. It could, however, reduce cost as more products can be made at a lower cost and lesser amount of time compared to labor made garments. Moreover, technology can benefit the sportswear marketers as a form of market research as social media and internet has outrageously developed over the past decade. • 5. Racial Politics And The Race Cycle Model Essay It has been centuries since slavery ended across Latin America and the United States, yet racial issues continue to plague these countries. Since manumission, the concept of race has evolved through the meaning societies have given it. While the idea of race is merely conceptual it has significant social and political effects. More specifically, through racial politics, these countries have been able to incorporate race in their agendas and implement racial politics in their laws and policies in such a way that perpetuates racial ideologies. One of the methods used to understand the role of racial politics and its effect on racial ideologies and vice versa is the race cycle model. The purpose of the race cycle model is to demonstrate how racial ideologies are improved, worsened, or maintained, but fails to explain how the cycle can lead to multiple, asymmetrical outcomes as depicted by the racial politics of Haiti and the responses of other Latin American and the United States following the Haitian Revolution. The race cycle model begins with what Sawyer (2006) calls the old equilibrium. This old equilibrium represents the status quo surrounding the racial politics and ideologies in a state. In the old equilibrium, Haiti was formerly a French colony known as Saint Domingue on the island of Hispaniola. Throughout this period, Saint Domingue was a major plantation zone and France s wealthiest overseas colony, exporting, Over 80,000 tons of sugar , among other cash crops ... Accentuating the lack of passion and common courtesy Walter has for his wife, Ruth, in this particular scene, Hansberry is, in the beginning, ingraining in her readers minds how detestably this man treats his wife. However, this absolute disregard for his wife is completely transformed after Mama, the woman who is burdened with the dilemma, decides to satisfy the needs of the majority and purchases a house which will be advantageous for everyone, whether they were pleased with the decision or not. His whole being appears to convert into its polar opposite, as shown through the stage direction, He dances over to Ruth and tries to get her to dance with him. She gives in at last to his raunchiness and in a fit of giggles allows herself to be drawn into his mood (112). The author illustrates how his actions and mentality, thus their relationship, evolved over a short period resulting from the purchase of the house, which was originally intended to appease the majority, since not everyone initially approved of this use of the money. Therefore, this altering of mindset and relationship conveys that, by selecting the choice best suited for the majority, one may unknowingly be selecting an option that becomes best suited for everyone and that is eventually unanimously agreed upon. In addition to this, it it always best to comply with the needs of the majority since the majority may also include what is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Two Theories Of Utilitarian And Retributive Punishment The concept of punishment exists in many different forms, each with conflicting views on how to best approach an offence committed by individuals. Two theories stand at the forefront of punishment being that of the Utilitarian, and Retributive theories. Each theory presents its own idea on how punishment ought to be carried out and the core reasoning behind it. The two theories are also debated within our own Canadian legal system which is referred to as: The Criminal Code of Canada, where it details the different principles and procedures when sentencing an individual who has committed a specific offence with guidelines for what sanction should be given. Such principles/procedures reflect various factors within the two theories, and have undergone different fluctuations for which theory has dominated throughout history, but have been influenced more by one theory than from the other. Generally speaking, punishment is invoked upon offenders for the pursuit of the common good of mankind for a society that prospers, and not one that is hindered. Two primary theorists each lead one of the theories of punishment and what its purpose is; one who stands from a Utilitarian view is Jeremy Bentham, and the other being Immanuel Kant who focuses on a more Retributive theory of punishment. The two theories of Utilitarian and Retributive Punishment each have their own views on what the purpose of punishment is, and of how it is to be invoked in the case of a breach of rules by an offender. Jeremy Bentham makes his debut by focusing on the theory of Utilitarianism which is subdivided into two other theories; the Theory of the Good (also referred to as: Hedonism), where good is pleasure and evil is pain; and the Theory of the Right (also known as: Consequentialism), which outlines that the right action is that which produces the maximum good of all available actions. Bentham as a theorist, believes that the primary goal of laws is to prevent wrongful actions where he summarizes in his opening to Chapter XIII of An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation: The general object which all laws have, or ought to have, in common, is to augment the total happiness of the community; and therefore, in the first ... A tsunami is a series of waves created by an abrupt movement on the ocean floor that can result from an earthquake, meteorite or a volcanic eruption. For example, on the 11th of March 2011 a devastating tsunami occurred on the east coast of Japan, which was caused by an earthquake at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The magnitude of the earthquake which caused the Japanese tsunami was recorded as 9.1 on the richer scale. The Pardoner s eloquent haranguing appears as he exclaims, My holy pardon frees you all of this, provided that you make the right approaches, that is with sterling rings, or silver brooches (Chaucer 301 303). Even though the statement appears to free of irony, the Pardoner s opening story brings a sense of satire to his closing remarks. The pros and cons of this decision are all personal. The lower upfront costs may be more beneficial to one person than to another. A personal decision that I am struggling with right now is with my credit rating. I have two credit cards that have a high balance. These are both in my ex wife s possession. They are both delinquent on payments. I have to decide whether to just take out a high interest loan to pay these off and renew my credit rating, or to let her financial decisions affect my credit rating. The third principle of individual decision making is rational people think at the margin (Mankiw, 2007). This states that the benefit must exceed the cost. A personal experience with this would be that I have a truck that gets very low fuel mileage. I needed a car with better fuel economy, but have bad credit. I weighed the pros and cons of buying a car with a high interest loan, and felt that the benefit was worth the cost. While some would say there is nothing good to come from this, those who make these choices must feel there is. Mankiw (2007) points to the difference in value between water and diamonds. A marginal increase in a person s water supply will rarely come at a significant cost to the person. However, a marginal increase in diamonds is extremely valuable. We used EEG data to measure brain activity during stimulus. Then created a system for preprocessing the data to fine tune the data to recognise image stimulus ERPs. Deforestation leads to decrease in biotic pump disrupting the water cycle leading to a decrease in transpiration and increase in temperature. Such rise in temperature leads to lack of rainfall, increase droughts and forest fires to which the fires will disrupt the water cycle even more. The effects of deforestation on Amazon forest resilience research by Zemp et al. (2017), build upon previous research done in the field of forestry studies and used similar methods to collect data. Despite the evidence showing the detrimental effects of deforestation, Zemp et al. (2017) s research focuses primarily on the quantity of the forest and deforestation, as such, the research has a gap such that other geographical influences like fertilization, greenhouse gases, and water use, are not accounted for. However, Zemp et al. • 36. Howard Nemerov s The Vacuum The Vacuum Analysis Grief is the price we pay for love. Queen Elizabeth II. As the quote above explains to love something that can die is to welcome pain. The poem, The Vacuum focuses on the private aspect of life where one spouse dies leaving the other alone after many years. The speaker in the poem is battling grief and cannot bring himself to use the vacuum cleaner because his late wife used to take pride in a clean house. The composition implies that the speaker no longer cares about life now that his wife has died. The first few lines of the poem heavily foreshadow death, but do not directly address the event that has occurred. Howard Nemerov uses harsh, brutal diction such as stopped lung , dog dead , and old woman to imply the pain and isolation the speaker feels the word choice also gives the poem a depressing mood. Giving flashbacks to the past illuminates the theme of chaos and order in the poem. When the speaker s wife was alive she used to crawl, in the corner and under the stair as to make sure every nook and cranny was clean, but now old filth is everywhere. • 39. Media In Media The effects of media consumption on behavioral tendencies have long been the subject of both popular and academic scrutiny. Specifically, it is widely accepted that over exposure to depictions of violence in media can lead to desensitization to violent content and even short term aggressive behavior. From a psychological perspective (but not from a sociological one), this is hard to dispute as there are numerous studies which confirm this phenomenon although these studies have also been the victim of sensationalist interpretations and representations. Essentially what has been postulated is a simple cause and effect relationship: media exposure leads to a behavioral change. And as of recently, video games, in particular, have been the subject of increased scrutiny in the context of this relationship and once again there is evidence to support such a relationship. However, a review of available data published by the American Psychological Association (Granic, Lobels, Engels, 2014) has suggested that another, more positive cause and effect relationship may be at work with this type of media as it has grown in visibility and mainstream acceptance. One such trend that has emerged from a review of multiple studies is that playing video games can result in an increase in problem solving skills. This has largely gone overlooked by the popular press and the public at large who instead continue to focus on the link to aggressive behavior. And it is also important to consider that the findings of the APA do not disprove this link; this potential increase in problem solving ability and the separate increase of aggressive tendencies are not necessarily mutually exclusive to one another. In fact, it is entirely likely that there is one singular reason that both occur as a result of playing video games: interactivity. Interactivity in the context of video games constitutes a deep immersion in an entertaining fiction at a level that other visual media cannot match. James Paul Gee (2007) clarifies this point further nothing happens until a player acts and makes decisions... words and deeds are all placed in the context of an interactive relationship between the player and the world. The Joe Perry Project band broke up in 1984 and Joe s manager wanted him to go back and be part of Aerosmith (Schlesinger, 2008). Brad Whitford leaves Aerosmith. Hmax Model Paper Final Project: Research about HMAX model Seok Hee Lee Abstract In this paper, I investigated some of the models of computational neuroscience used in the face recognition field. The model to be discussed is HMAX model. The paper contains what HMAX model is, how it is derived in terms of biological background, and how it is being used for facial recognition. Also, I simulated the simplified version of the model in MATLAB. The simulation of the simplified version verified one cell in the highest hierarchy covers the entire retinal space of the given image. INTRODUCTION First of all, I looked into the paper written by Riesenhuber and how HMAX model is derived from a biological concept of a visual cortex. It begins with the power of cells found in macaque inferotemporal cortex (IT). The cells in IT are considered as essential cells for recognizing an object and IT is the highest area in the ventral visual stream. They are tuned to views of complicated objects, for instance a face of human. Their response remains almost the same when scale or position of an object changes, and it is one of the characteristic of these cells. This raises a question: how can these cells distinguish similar faces? In the other words, this paper talks what mechanism these cells use to respond differently from the similar inputs. This question is related to the model proposed by Hubel and Wiesel. In this model, simple cells with neighboring receptive fields feed into higher hierarchy cell and this ...
