The document summarizes 19 weeks of an art student's workshops and projects. In week 19, they helped curate an exhibition with other students. They were nervous about working in a group but found the experience went better than expected, as they were able to display their work as intended without disrupting others. Throughout the workshops, the student explored different mediums but preferred appropriating found footage and images to comment on political and social issues.

2. 30/11/15, Week 1
The title of the first workshop was The
Practice of Everyday Life which is a
theme that I can loosely associate
with my practice. In terms of
artists, I really like work that focus
very closely on a person and their
personality and life stories,
therefore I really enjoyed the work
Breakdown, 2001, by Michael Landy.
I always really admire people who
go to extreme lengths for their work
especially something so close to
their life. Personally I like my work
to focus on other people.

4. 7/12/15, Week 2
This was my favourite workshop
because I love using appropriated
materials in my work. I didn't
really. During the first part of the
workshop, we had to watch
people are record what they were
doing and re-enact it. I didn’t
really enjoy this because I didn’t
think that anything particularly
interesting came out of it, so after
I worked with parts of films to
create something that I found
more interesting.
5.
6. 14/12/15, Week 3
The title Critical/Political feels very relative
to my work, especially the word
‘political’, which is a subject my work
focuses on the majority of the time.
Working predominantly with sound
during the workshop was something
that I hadn't really worked with before
and didn't find it as easy to get across an
idea using just sound. I worked adding
sound and video together to create
work, looking at appropriated materials
which I had done last week. I think I’ve
figured out that I like working with
appropriation more because it allows
my work to be relatable, with people
possibly having seen the footage before,
rather than filming my own video.
7.
8. 21/12/15, Week 4
I’ve decided to work further on projects
involving appropriated materials. I have
started working on films using footage
of politicians, creating things quite
satirical, which is intended to make the
viewer laugh. I’ve looked at the work of
satirical artists like Cassetteboy and
Mark McGowan, who both look at the
anti-conservative, left-wing side of
British (mostly) politics, much like me.
I’ve done a lot of researching things like
watching political conference videos,
watching the news and politics shows
like this week and reading newspapers
and political articles. Specifically I'm
working with footage of more ‘funny’
politicians like Boris Johnson and Liz
Truss.

10. 28/12/15, Week 5
This week I finished my Kim
Kardashian video. It took a lot
longer than expected but I didn’t
want to give up on it because I really
liked the idea. It did look how I
wanted it to but I’m not sure if it has
the effect that I was going for. It’s
quite slow but I think that it is quite
funny, which I was going for, I just
think it isn’t quite as smooth as I
hoped it would be. This kind of
work takes a lot of scouring the
internet to find weird things, which
is something I really enjoy doing,
and can influence the kind of work I
make, a lot.

12. 4/1/16, Week 6
Sculpture has always been my favourite
medium and this workshop focused on
casting. I had done alginate and plaster
casting of body parts before but I had
never done sand casting before and
hadn’t worked with much metal either. I
thought the sand casting was really
interesting because it was quite
unpredictable and imprecise which I
liked because that sort of thing always
leads to a happy accident and
something probably better that what
was intended, especially because I had
just brought in some small, quite
familiar objects to cast, they became
something quite strange and
unrecognizable.
13.
14. 11/1/16, Week 7
This week I worked with wood in the
workshop. In my pair, we decided to
make a frame that would be worn and
then various things could be added to
the frame. Our frames both went in
different directions, mine was quite
toy-like and playful. I’ve looked at the
work of artists like Anthony Caro who
build large structures out of various
materials. I wanted to stick to the sort
of themes I usually look at like politics
and society, so decided to do some
research and find some objects that I
could maybe recreate using different
materials. I like working with various
different sizes and I wanted to play
with different proportions and scales.
15.
16. 18/1/16, Week 8
I worked with carving this week,
something that I had never done before. I
caved into plaster, making valleys, tunnels
and textures. Its probably not a technique
that I would go straight to because it is
quite a geometric and abstract way of
working, and I like to be quite literal and
use maybe slightly more smooth and
defined materials that are already formed.
I prefer to work with found objects so it
was quite difficult to create my own
object. I’m thinking about maybe
collecting some found objects and
damaging them in a similar way that I
carved the plaster. This experiment could
lead to something interesting that I have
never really done before.
17.
18. 25/1/16, Week 9
I’ve decided that I should mix both
sculpture with editing photos on
Photoshop. I’ve made small,
random sculptures using coloured
modelling clay, and used lots of
effects on Photoshop to try and
create something quite surreal to
look at. I think it’s quite hard to
make them work, and they don’t
really fit my style of work because
they don’t really have any theme or
meaning. I like to base my work
around political and social issues,
for example, but these are just ok to
look at. I think I might move on to
other kinds of imagery.
19.
20. 1/2/16, Week 10
I’ve started to work with imagery from
popular culture. I’ve mixed up and
image of Pamela Anderson, and a
still from an episode of Countryfile
set in Easton College in Norfolk
where they were teaching students
how to hunt. I put the image of
Pamela Anderson in because she is
an animal rights advocate but she is
really iconic and everyone
recognizes her. I prefer this work so
much more but it doesn’t feature a
sculpture so I am going to turn it
into a sculpture by creating a sort of
frame to hold the image. I need to
test out what size I want the image
printed as well.
21.
22. 8/2/16, Week 11
I’m making a frame out of pieces of
metal to display my images on.
I’ve been looking at the work of
Christian Boltanski who often
creates these standing frames to
display his work on. I’ve looked at
what sizes I want the images and I
want them to be a4 sort of size. I
want to maybe put a few images
together and display them on this
frame, maybe creating some sort
of story with the images.
23.
24. 15/2/16, Week 12/13
I’ve been really inspired by one of my
favourite artworks, State Britain, by
Mark Wallinger to create small displays
using my frame. I’ve been using a
selection of images that I have created
and arranged them together, trying to
see what works well and what doesn’t
and I have been photographing them, to
compare them. The children’s colouring
images next to the images of Pamela
Anderson are really conflicting which I
like. I have also been printing on
different types of paper to create a
cheap, flimsy and DIY feel to the prints.
The different feels, looks and textures to
the papers also creates a depth to the
display.

26. 29/2/16, Week 14
This week I started the hybrid
advanced workshop. I worked with
animation which I had never really
done before and I don’t really know
if it is a technique I want to work
with much. It’s quite time
consuming and I didn’t really like
the outcome of the animation I did
in the workshop. It was a bit slow
and boring and I usually want my
films to have a lot of elements, so I
feel like it would take a lot of time to
do something that I really liked. I
might make animations and layer
them on top of something else that I
have made.
27.
28. 7/3/16, Week 15
In this week’s workshop, I worked with
the green screen, which I quite
enjoyed. It’s a way that will let me
layer up different videos and create
something really busy. What I made
in the workshop wasn’t really my
style of work but it was more of a
practise. Afterwards I used the
green screen idea to put moving
photos on top of a found film, which
I think I will continue to work with,
because I’m quite enjoying that. I
also might experiment with it
further and see what other ideas I
can come up with because I’m quite
enjoying this technique.
29.
30. 14/3/16, Week 16
I’ve started looking at the theme of social
media and art because the video I
started working on was a video a
YouTuber made and it has inspired me
to look more at the idea of people
broadcasting their lives on the internet.
(I’m also looking at something similar
for my essay.) My favourite YouTube
videos I’m working on are by someone
called Pupinia Stewart, who is quite
satirical, which fits my style quite well,
so I have been mashing up her videos
with other videos I have found online,
like the one where she says she dated a
member of ISIS, I used footage of ISIS
and layered them up together.
31.
32. 21/3/16, Week 17
I’ve been working a lot on my essay this
week, which is about the idea of using
social media as a way of exhibiting
and/or creating artworks. It involved
researching into the history of computer
art, which I really like, but I think it is a
bit silly to try and imitate something
that was created using completely
different technology, so it hasn’t really
inspired my work. I also research more
into works that have similar themes to
mine rather than the medium of the
work or things like that; therefore, I
have looked at artists like Amalia Ulman
who work with the internet and the
image of a person.
33. 28/3/16, Week 18
I’ve been planning my exhibition piece
and writing my exhibition proposal
this week. I’ve had to think of ways
to get around obstacles stopping me
from creating what I want to create.
I’ve had to sacrifice ideas as well,
because of things like lack of time
for putting it up and issues with the
space I’m exhibiting in. Things like
me wanting to play the sound
through speakers had to be changed
due to me being part of a group
with other people working with
video. Mine is quite loud and
disruptive. I would ideally display
the work alone in a room.
34. 4/4/16, Week 19
This week we put up the exhibition.
I was quite nervous about
working in a group. I didn’t know
if I would be very good at getting
my ideas for the curation across. I
didn’t know if I would feel
comfortable saying I didn’t like
someone’s idea. It wasn’t as bad
as I thought it would be, though.
I was able to do what I wanted to
do to a certain extent without
disrupting other people’s works.
