1. Series of explorations looking at
unexpected outcomes using film
based photography.
-Using Diana Mini because it is a 35mm film, a
cheaper option. The Diana is completely manual
allowing me to basically do what ever I want.
-Initial experiments will be quick fire shots so I can
develop the films quickly and begin to collect my
outcomes
2. List of Experiments
Film soaking: Camera techniques:
-In Lemonade -Multiple exposures
-In Wine -Endless panorama
-In Detergent -Silhouettes
-In Soda -Exposing both sides of film
-In Dishwasher -Splitzers
-In Bleach
-In Roasting
-In Boiling
3. First experiments
I wanted a separate space to upload every single outcome :
http://rachellland.tumblr.com/
What did I do?
-What can be done with the Diana Mini
-Which film works best, 200 or 400 ISO
-Experiment with multiple exposures and endless panoramic.
-What kinds of multiple exposures are most successful and which are least
successful?
Impressed with the outcomes and surprised with how well it has all worked.
4. 1
The photos that I was initially most impressed. It was interesting to
create images filling other shapes.
5. 2
Overlaying the same picture from a different angle also created some
interesting pictures. It works most effectively when it is a strong shape.
6. 3
Most successful ones are when a texture is placed over
an image or two contracting pictures are places
together such as branches of a tree against a building
or lamp post or some kind of structure.
7. First tutorial
Points made:
-What do old photos makes you feel / emotions linked to photos
-Notion of whats going to catch peoples attention
-Being socially aware of what is happening around me, use of
emotions to make my work more interesting and to give it more
meaning?
FMP: Use my interest in photography to develop into a publication
of some kind. I am interested in layout, the combination of text and
image, so this would be a perfect way to present my work.
11. Turning The Camera
I wanted to experiment and
develop the process of
turning the camera and
taking the picture of the
same thing from two
different ways. Using
structures of buildings I
found some really
interesting outcomes.
12. Colour
Using colour more and shooting on days with blue sky. Using things
to photograph that have more colour in. It created a different mood
from my first set of images. Depends on what kind of mood or
emotions I am trying to provoke from my audience as to which type
of colours I use.
13. Zine
A5 Zine based on my experiments of
unexpected outcomes. To feel substantial
and hand made to reflect the photographs.
I used a simple pamphlet stitch to sew it
together and left the thread visible and show
its structure, hiding nothing.
The layout I chose for this was very simple so
the pictures could be shown big and speak
for themselves.
For a packaging I decided to use brown
parcel wrap which added an element of
receiving a gift.
I designed the packet on an open envelope
style allowing people to see what is inside it,
inviting them to pick it up and look at it.
14. Handmade and Bound
I decided to enter handmade and
bound because I saw people had
done it last year and has wished I
could have done it. I love making
little books with my work exploring
layouts and thought this would be
a great opportunity to put my
work I am doing out there.
15. Second Tutorial
Why I had chosen certain pictures?
Having more meaning behind why I am picking images leads
me away from the fact I am just taking pictures.
I don’t want to be in danger of what everyone else is doing so
need to think about why and then
Will allow me to gain control over what I am doing.
Books suggested that I read are:
Camera Lucida by Roland Barthe
On Photography by Susan Sontag
It was also suggested I looked at John Stezaker’s work and so
have a book out about him full with his work.
16. John Stezaker
Interesting to see how he works and
approaches his work. I am doing
something similar to him except I am
taking photos he recycles old images.
I am trying to, create texture and calibrate
different images to make one. I want to
create an image that makes you look
‘deep into’ it to work out what is
happening and all the different lines
converging together.
17. Tom Wood at Photographers Gallery
I found all the captions for the pictures interesting and
really simple, Eg. ‘three wise women’. It made me think
about this in relation to my work. Would simple captions
about the images work?
Another very interesting thing I found was a technique of
photographer in reflections in windows. It was a
documentation on a bus journey and the images looked
so similar to how some of mine have worked. These had
been taken through reflections but echoed what I was
doing and gave me ideas about documentations,
documenting a journey or traveling somewhere.
18. Exhibition – National Gallery
This piece stood out for me and
related to ideas about text and
image. Tactia Dean inscribed
quotations on the surface of the
prints.
I liked the way the quotes had
been written on the photos with a
hand written type. It added to the
texture of the images perhaps
something I could think about
when adding text to mine?
19. What is happening now?
Experiments I have done:
Multiple exposures,
Endless Panorama,
Silhouettes.
Experiments I am doing now:
Exposing both sides of the film,
Using a splitzer
I have ordered my materials and chemicals for developing my own film and will be able to
start experiments for film soaking soon in :
Lemonade,
Wine,
Detergent,
Soda,
Dishwasher,
Bleach,
Roast it,
Boil it
How can I make this easier for myself?
Split each film into two and then do two of each experiment soak and just using one film?
I could do this in a dark room but splitting the film in half, using an old canister and sticking it to
it, rolling it back inside so half the film is in a new canister and half left in the old?
Thinking about how much time I have left and how long it takes me to do a film and the cost of
each film this might be an economic way of doing this in the upcoming weeks worth of
experiments. This would also allow me to see what works well and doesn’t quicker.
